Chemical Dependency and the Family - October 2012
"Chemical Dependency and the Family" was presented on October 30, 2012; by Dr. Lynn Kleiman Malinoff, Ed.D. Chemical dependency affects all members of the family, not just the person with the alcohol or other drug addiction. This program provides participants with a basic understanding of how addiction impacts each member of a family. The presenter describes the roles and behaviors that family members often acquire when living with addiction, ways in which each family member is affected by addiction in the family, and options for family members to obtain help to cope with addiction in the family. This program is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a FREE, annual workshop series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about chemical dependency, recovery, family and related issues. The Education Series is organized by Dawn Farm, a non-profit community of programs providing a continuum of chemical dependency services. For information, please see http://www.dawnfarm.org.

This study evaluated the safety of performing percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube insertion using propofol sedation on patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in an outpatient surgical center. No intraoperative complications occurred and the overall incidence of complications was low. No patients required invasive respiratory support after the procedure. The study demonstrated PEG tube insertion in an outpatient setting using propofol sedation can be safely performed in ALS patients with varying degrees of respiratory impairment.

We are all broken in some way. How we respond to our brokenness depends upon good fortune and the beliefs we develop. In our everyday life, we seek meaning, connection, fulfillment, and love. This seeking is built into our DNA and is necessary for our survival in infancy. Throughout our lives, seeking and its fulfillment give meaning to our lives. In this article, I discuss these ideas and illustrate them with examples from my personal life and from my research on resilience and the meanings of violence to perpetrators. - 4. They can’t be protected from some things.
- 5. Kids know the truth.
- 6. They need to know they can still trust the adults they love.
- 7. It will take all of your strength and courage.
- 8. Tell the age-appropriate truth.
- 9. We all dread the big question.
- 10. Open the door to conversation.
- 11. The child will come in when s/he is ready… but not before.
- 12. It’s okay for kids to see a sad grown-up.
- 13. You should explain your tears and bring your child near.
- 14. Frustration is the hallmark symptom of ALS.
- 15. It’s important to label emotions.
- 16. Kids follow the lead of the grown-ups.
- 17. There is never too much support.
- 18. You can help by talking to their teachers.
- 19. Normalcy…
- 20. …is worth its weight in gold
- 21. How can they have normalcy??
- 22. Let them be kids.
- 23. It’s okay to have fun even though your loved one has ALS.
