1) Sustainable diets aim to balance environmental sustainability, health, and social priorities but defining and implementing them remains a challenge.
2) UK policy has gradually recognized the food system's unsustainability and moved from a production focus to considering consumption impacts as well. However, frameworks remain contradictory and the new government is pushing sustainable diets down the agenda.
3) The Sustainable Development Commission's 2009 report identified dietary priorities and initiatives but found limited evaluation of impacts. Comprehensive guidelines and coordinated action across sectors are still needed to make sustainable eating a reality in the UK.
This document discusses trends in the foodservice and food retail industries. It provides data showing that from 2009 to 2010, total revenue from foodservice declined by 2% while total revenue from food retail declined only slightly by 0.2%. It also contrasts key differences between the two industries, noting that foodservice focuses more on emotion, variety, chefs, and local sourcing while food retail emphasizes efficiency, uniformity, price, and global sourcing.

Aanbeveling:
Het eten van twee keer vis per week (waarvan
ten minste één keer per week vette vis) is van
belang vanwege de gezonde visvetzuren.

Editor's Notes
(Sheet 34)
So to conclude:
What could be done to reduce the impact of livestock production on biodiversity?
Land use is central in the effects, so it has to be central in the solution.
Sensible and prudent intensification: closing the yield gap (mainly outside Europe)
Reduction in consumption of meat and dairy
Reduction of losses in production and consumption
Protection of vulnerable areas
Nutrients:
Higher efficiency / reduction of losses
Closing of nutrient cycles
And again, a reduction in consumption might help, since meat and dairy almost inevitable lead to higher emissions.
To conclude, like I said in the beginning, the effect of meat and dairy consumption on life on earth is probably underestimated. Because of increasing consumption the effect is still increasing. If we want to do something about it, appropriate action will need to be taken.
