A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. Present simple
To conjugate the present simple we use the infinitive
for subjects “I”, “you”, “we” and “they”
For third persons (“he”, “she”, “it”) we add an “s” at the
end of the verb
Affirmative structure: Subject+Verb
Example: We eat, He drinks
Negative structure: Subject+aux verb (to
do)+negative aux (not)+verb
Example: He does not (doesn’t) drink, They do not
(don’t) eat
3. Past simple
The "simple past" is used to talk about an action that
ended in a previous to the current time. The duration
is not relevant. The time the action takes place can be
the recent past or distant past
Affirmative structure: Subject+principal verb
Example: She was a doctor, The keys were on the table
Negative structure: Subject+to be+not
Examples: She was not (wasn’t) a doctor, The keys
were not (weren’t) on the table
4. Future simple
Forms "will" and "going to" is used to express the
future
The difference between "going to" and "will" is the
sense of planning and probability of occurrence action
In general, "going to" for concrete plans, it is used
when we are sure that something will happen.
Example (will): I will call you later. They will clean
the house
Example (going to): I am going to have a great party.
She is going to college

6. Present continuous
To form present continous we use the auxiliar verb “to
be” and the infinitive+ing
Affirmative structure: Subject+to be+infinitive+ing
Example: We are eating. I am talking
Negative structure: Subject+to be+not+infinitive+ing
Example: We are not (aren’t) eating. I am not talking
7. Past continuous
The past continuous is used for actions that occurred at a
specific time in the past
To form the past continuous auxiliary verb "to be" and
infinitive+ing of the verb is used
The auxiliary verb "to be" is in the simple past, but "to be"
is an irregular verb
Affirmative structure: Subject+to be+infinitive+ing
Example: I was talking. They were eating
Negative structure: Subject+to be+not+infinitive+ing
Examples: I was not (wasn’t) talking. They were not
(weren’t) eating
8. Future continuous
To form the continuous future "will be" or "be going
to" is used and infinitive+ing of the main verb
Affirmative structure (will):Subject+will
be+infinitive+ing
Example: I will be talking. They will be in the park
Negative structure (will):
Subject+will+not+infinitive+ing
Example: I will not (won’t) be talking. They will not
(won’t) be in the park

Affirmative structure (going to): Subject+ to
be+going to be+infinitive+ing
