DocSend Fundraising Research: What we Learned from 200 Startups Who Raised $360MDocSend
Why do some startups get funded? What makes for the best pitch? How does the process work?
DocSend recently teamed up with Professor Tom Eisenmann from Harvard Business School. Together, we conducted research that gave us the answers to those questions. We studied the fundraising of 200 startup companies as they went through their Series Seed and Series A rounds. Altogether, these companies raised more than $360 million.
Why this data is awesome:
Fundraising is a historically opaque endeavor. There’s very little data available and most advice tends to be anecdotal. DocSend is in the unique position of being able to quantitatively analyze the interaction between founders and investors, and tie that to fundraising outcomes in a statistically meaningful way.
Why we built this report:
DocSend aims to help companies share documents in a smarter, safer, and more impactful way. We believe this research is in service of that mission and can help push the startup ecosystem forward as a whole.
Background on DocSend:
DocSend helps sales people track and control documents they send to clients. We’ve also become very popular amongst founders in the fundraising process. Hundreds of startups have used our platform to circulate pitch decks to investors.

Do you have a strategy in place to emerge from COVID-19 ahead of your competition? In this webinar, financial, data, and marketing experts will break down the three most important parts of your income statement to focus on to successfully navigate the current COVID-19 situation and accompanying economic consequences.
We will share examples and case studies of how businesses have catapulted themselves ahead of their competitors by focusing on specific activities during economic downturns, such as increasing the ROI on marketing efforts and implementing cost cutting measures (improving customer retention and reducing process inefficiencies).
We can only speculate how the economy will recover following the pandemic. There is the possibility of a “V” rebound – sharp downturn followed by sharp upturn, but that is becoming less and less likely each day. Businesses need to prepare a “U” or an “L” or even a Nike-style “swoosh” type recover that could take up to 24 months.
What we do know is that Covid19 marks an inflection point: The world after it is unlikely to resemble the one before it. CEO’s need to remake their organizations to cope with the “new normal”.
Key insights from Silicon Valley Bank's Startup Outlook Report. SoCal startups are fueled by a flourishing ecosystem that includes a growing number of local equity capital sources from both venture capitalists and corporate investors. While their outlook is cautiously optimistic, they continue to hire.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Observability Concepts EVERY Developer Should Know -- DeveloperWeek Europe.pdfPaige Cruz
Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.
I, a former op, would like to extend an invitation to all application developers to join the observability party will share these foundational concepts to build on:

$25.5B DEPLOYED ACROSS 1829 DEALS TO VC-BACKED
COMPANIES IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2016
2015 was a record year in both deals and dollars invested in VC-backed companies, though we saw a marked
pullback in financings towards year-end. 2016 has seen a less exuberant start; at the current run rate, deal
activity is roughly on pace to match 2013 while investment dollars would fall between the 2014 and 2015
figures.
10. www.cbinsights.com @cbinsights
Q1’16 SEES CONTINUED DECLINE FROM Q4’15 AS BOTH
DEAL TALLY AND FUNDING DOLLARS DROP
The negative sentiment that caused a sharp correction in Q4’15 has continued to persist into the new year.
Global funding fell a further 8% vs. the previous quarter as mega-round activity continued to cool. Deal count
was a bit more stable but nevertheless fell 4% as opposed to recovering from the drastic drop-off in Q4’15.
11. www.cbinsights.com @cbinsights
SEED-STAGE DEAL SHARE FALLS TO 5-QUARTER LOW
WHILE SERIES A RISES
Deal share to seed-stage investments abruptly dropped in Q1’16, down from 32% of the total in Q4’15 to just
28%. Series A deals continued to take a strong proportion of deals with the 26% in Q1’16 representing a 5-
quarter high for A rounds.
12. www.cbinsights.com @cbinsights
MEDIAN EARLY-STAGE DEAL SIZE TICKS UPWARD TO 5-
QUARTER HIGH
Median early-stage (Seed - Series A) deal size among all VC-backed companies hit $2.7M in Q1’16, up 17%
from the previous quarter. This reflects the active ecosystem of micro-VCs, multi-stage funds and strategic
investors actively pursuing early-stage deals.
13. www.cbinsights.com @cbinsights
GLOBAL MEDIAN LATE-STAGE DEAL SIZES CONTINUE TO
FALL
The continued decline of mega-rounds led to a further drop in global median late-stage (Series D or later) deal
sizes. Q1’16’s median late-stage deal size plunged 30% from the previous quarter to just $22M, nearing the
pre-euphoria figures of Q1’15.
14. www.cbinsights.com @cbinsights
U.S. SAW $14.8B ACROSS 1035 DEALS IN Q1’16
US-based VC-backed companies raised a record $72.4B in equity financing in 2015, although deal count
dropped by 8% from 2014. Negative sentiment has continued to the start of the new year, with deal activity
barely on pace to reach 2011’s figures at the Q1’16 run-rate.
18. www.cbinsights.com @cbinsights
$11.2B INVESTED INTO US-BASED SERIES A AND B
COMPANIES IN 2015
In 2015, funding to US-based tech companies slightly increased over 2014 while deal activity slowed. 2015 had
3 mega-rounds to US-based Series B companies including Gitthub ($250M), Oscar Health ($145M), and
Symphony Communication Services Holdings ($100M).
19. www.cbinsights.com @cbinsights
QUARTERLY TREND REVEALS FINANCING DROPOFF TO
SERIES A AND B STAGE COMPANIES
The quarterly trend reveals a third consecutive quarterly drop in investment to Series A and B-stage companies.
This represents the lowest quarterly total for deals and dollars since Q1’15.
20. www.cbinsights.com @cbinsights
MEDIAN ROUND SIZE OF SERIES A AND B STAGE
COMPANIES IN THE U.S.
The median round size of both Series A and Series B investment has steadily increased over the past 5 years.
From 2011 to 2015, the median round size for Series A companies increased from $3.3M to $6M, representing
an 82% increase, while Series B companies went from $7M to $12.5M, a 79% increase over the period.
21. www.cbinsights.com @cbinsights
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE COMPANIES RAISE FOLLOW-ON
FINANCING?
Overall, its taking less time for companies to raise financing. The amount of time that seed stage companies
wait before they raise a Series A has steadily declined, and the same is true for Series A companies that have
raised a Series B round.

PROGRAMMATIC COMMERCE
Purchases will be made with data insights (often of the recurring variety). Hardware (IoT) and software (AI)
opportunities. The age old “know when I’m out of milk” and order it issue that smart fridges were supposed to
solve.

DIGITAL HEALTH IS HOT
The digital health industry reached a new investment high in 2015. The past year saw nearly $5.8B invested, a
small increase from the breakout year in 2014 (which itself saw more than double the funding over 2013).
However, there was a more significant jump in deals, which saw a 20.6% year-over-year increase and broke the
800-mark for the first time (nearly hitting 900). We need to see exits.

CYBERSECURITY ALSO HOT (BUT OVERFUNDED)
In dollar terms, investment has grown from $1.1B to $3.8B, which is 235% growth over 5 years. The all-time
high funding total in 2015 was bolstered by large rounds to well-funded companies including Tenable Network
Security‘s $250M Series B and Tanium‘s $120M Series G. The challenge here is that this space is probably
overfunded by lots of ”me too” companies and lemming investors who piled in.

GETTING ‘REAL’
Real estate tech spans categories like property and leasing management software and listing and search
services, among several others. The industry saw a record in deals and dollars in 2015.

“ASSET INTENSIVE”
From oil & gas analytics to mining software to construction tech software (not the fin tech type), a few booming
areas. Smart money like Sequoia, Greylock, Bain are all making bets here.
