Pre-eclampsia is a pregnancy complication defined by new hypertension and proteinuria after 20 weeks of gestation. Eclampsia occurs when pre-eclampsia is complicated by seizures. It affects 6-8% of pregnancies in the US and can cause maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality if not properly managed. HELLP syndrome is a severe form of pre-eclampsia characterized by haemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelets that requires admission and delivery to resolve.
