Pragmatics is the study of how language is used in context and how meaning is derived based on context. It emerged in the 18th century from philosophers' ideas about language use. Pragmatics considers language users, context, and meaning potential. It differs from discourse analysis in focusing on sentences rather than entire texts. Some argued it was a "wastebasket" for linguistic topics not addressed by semantics, but it is now recognized as a legitimate field. Pragmatics is studied to understand how implied meaning is constructed in interactions and conversations.
