This document discusses several factors contributing to challenges facing the African American community, including the breakdown of the family structure, poor urban K-12 education systems, high male incarceration rates, and the impacts of welfare programs. It notes that the lack of education among parents affects children's outcomes, with incarceration rates higher for those without a high school diploma. Fixing failing schools and addressing anti-intellectualism within the community are presented as ways to improve circumstances.

• By their fourteenth birthday,
African American children whose
fathers do not have a high school
diploma are more likely than not to
see their fathers incarcerated.
• Juvenile incarceration can have
lasting impacts on a young person's
future (Kearney & Harris 2014).
