Pros And Cons Of Utilitarianism
1. Utilitarian s believe animals should be considered as equally morally relevant as humans because
the rights/interests of all beings aside from any form of discrimination or prejudice (speciesism)
should be morally relevant. That being said, like humans, non human animals possess sentience, or the
the ability to experience pain and pleasure. Having sentience is enough to say that non human animals
therefore also possess interests, interests that are similar (although not exact) to those of a human.
These common interests include being pain free, and living a life free from suffering. Because
utilitarianism entails taking into consideration the like interests of every party involved, animals must
then be taken into consideration, when appropriate, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regan rejects utilitarianism as an answer for whether zoos are morally defensible because
utilitarianism requires extensive information regarding how much good or bad/ costs and benefits are
generated for all who are effected. Regan argues that the extent of information that would be required
to use utilitarianism as an answer to the question is more information than can possibly be attained. In
other words, there are far too many aspects and interests of humans and non humans to take into
consideration equally. It is an unachievable task and therefore Regan believes deciphering the question
via the rights view is a more tangible

Animal Farm Essay on Utopia
THE UTOPIAN DREAM, WHILE NOBLE, IS SHORT SIGHTED BECAUSE IT FAILS TO
ACCOUNT FOR THE FLAWS IN HUMAN NATURE. George Orwell s allegorical novel Animal
Farm demonstrates the rapid shift from hopeful Utopian Dream, to reproachful dystopian nightmare as
a result of fundamental flaws in human nature, such as avarice, selfishness and the thirst for power
over others. In the novel, the animals are promised a better life if they revolt and institute the system
of Animalism, then they are promised a better life if they build the windmill and, if all else fails, the
raven promises a better afterlife on Sugarcandy Mountain . However, the animals ultimately never
achieve their utopia because of the avaricious and power hungry nature of Napoleon ... Show more

The resigned apathy and passivity of some of the animals allows for faster erosion of the dream of
equality and allows for the pigs to maintain the power that wasn t rightfully theirs. A typical example
of general passivity towards the pigs actions was Benjamin, the old donkey. Having knowledge of the
pig s hypocrisy, Benjamin consciously decided against actions of rebellion against the pigs, instead
resigning himself to the fact that he could not help the situation. After Boxer s death, Clover is so
emotionally destroyed by his sudden disappearance that she ceases to do anything. In accepting his
death as the pigs tell her, she is being passive and not searching for her own conclusions, even though
she had doubts about it. It these, plus many more examples of passivity towards the pig s reign, that
concludes in the animals having to forfeit any hope of the once so real, Utopian Dream. Animal Farm
is the story of the animals that rebel against their master in order to achieve their dream of a utopian
society. The book opens in an optimistic mood as Old Major in his speech describes a simple, natural
farm in which all the animals are free and equal. But gradually this energetic and positive mood
disappears, as the animals difficulties become progressively

Similarities Between La Belle Dame Sans Merci And Annabel Lee
Love in Poe s Annabel Lee and Keats s La Belle Dame sans Merci
Poe s Annabel Lee and Keats s La Belle Dame sans Merci depict the destructive effects that women
exercise upon men. In both poems, women, by death and deception, harm their adoring lovers. In
Annabel Lee, Annabel dies and leaves the speaker in isolation; in La Belle Dame Sans Merci, the
fairy, La Belle Dame, captures the speaker s heart, and then deserts him. The common theme of both
poems, that love generates harmful effects, is a reflection of both poets upsetting and harmful
childhood experiences.
Poetry, Keats purports, comes from the ferment of an unhappy childhood working through a noble
imagination (Keats 16). The lesson of [Keat s] ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He creates an aroma of sex in pacing steed, which might be an innocent horse ride, but is possibly a
sexual metaphor (the speaker being the steed.) The repetition of wild eyes is a sexual euphemism,
furthering the sexual nature of love expressed within the poem. Even the knight s last memory of the
fairy is of a sexual nature; the knight receives kisses four, afterwards the fairy lulls him to sleep. Keats
s love is relatively more tenuous than Poe s, because the fairy s love is unpredictable, and bizarre ( In
language strange she said / I love thee true ). This love is also destructive, as warned by the dead men
in the last stanza with their horrid warning that La Belle Dame/ Thee hath in thrall! Poe and Keats
employ the their speakers painful experiences with love as examples of love s ruinous consequences.
La Belle Dame sans Merci and Annabel Lee develop their characters with attention to details, so that
the impact of the characters experiences are more intense and vivid.. In Annabel Lee, the speaker calls
Annabel a maiden, starting the poem with virtuous connotations. The reader learns that Annabel is
from high birth through reference to her as a highborn kinsmen, and her grave as a sepulchre. Annabel
s wealthy birthright generates the

Snowball Fight Essay
POW! At what seems like 100 miles per hour it hits you! The cold snow running down your back,
chills form on your arm. Then, another one! Quickly you dodge it, then grab your own and send it
flying back. Wow, you think, snowball fights are extreme. This snowball fight was the best I ever had.
We were throwing snowballs across the street, hitting houses and laughing as we do so.
Running in the snow we began the fight! Each team building a snow fort bigger and better than the
other teams. Unfortunately in all of that chaos my team accidentally built our fort in the neighbor s
yard! Luckily, we fixed their yard up before they got home. Before we knew it the fight began, and I
was the first to get hit. The icy snow hit me right in the face

The Merchant Of Venice, Antony And Cleopatra, And Dr Faustus
Whilst the writer s selection of place bears great significance throughout many eras, the Renaissance
period is particularly fascinating in relation to setting. These playwrights were living through an
extraordinary and unprecedented flowering of drama and, consequentially, were afforded opportunities
that would have been unimaginable even a century before. The flourishing of drama necessitated the
creation of playhouses, in which setting could be conveyed more accurately and elaborately than in
the millennia that preceded. The combination of the uninhibited creativity associated with the
Renaissance and the realisation of the new possibilities of the commercial stage facilitated an
extremely nuanced and complex exploration of setting and place; providing us with some of the most
memorable and meaningful settings ever featured in literature. Setting provides a unique opportunity,
if chosen astutely, for the playwright to communicate narrative, and shape character, without having to
explicitly or linguistically express it. I intend to focus The Merchant of Venice, Antony and Cleopatra,
and Dr Faustus in order to display how setting directly affects the plot and often aids in forging our
understanding of identities within the play. Through consideration of the implications and ideals
attached to the settings presented throughout the texts, we can more accurately infer the sentiments of
the writer and understand the ways in which place gives impetus to plot.

Informative Essay On Ufos
Reports of an alien UFO being intercepted by jet fighters have circulated the Internet. Residents of an
otherwise quiet English town were awoken to blasting jet engines earlier this month. Jet fighters from
a nearby military base scrambled toward the English coast to intercept what was said to be a UFO.
The UFO was reported by fisherman to have risen from the water. The flight tracking of the jets
showed that they were circling something. But the government reported that it was not a UFO, but an
Air France flight. New footage on YouTube taken by fisherman tell a different story. UFO Dives Into
Sea A recent YouTube video shows footage from a fishing boat capturing jets and a helicopter circling
a UFO. The YouTube channel Christopher Stokes published the footage on May 25. It shows jets and
a helicopter attempting to make contact with a UFO before it dives into the sea. The fishermen are of
course hysterical as the booming engines of the jets buzz by before the UFO simply disappears into
the water. A helicopter than does a flyby, and the footage ends. Could this be real footage? If so, how
did they get it off the boat? Have those fishermen been assassinated? A Hoax or Possibly Real? The
footage of the jets, helicopter, and UFO is definitely suspicious. It is fuzzy, pixelated, and the UFO isn
t to clear. One odd feature of the footage is that the UFO ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton
Ponyboy Was Never Like the Rest of the Greasers
What is a stereotype? In the book The Outsider by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy the main character is a
member of a gang called the Greasers. People have fixed ideas or stereotypes about what gangs are
like. Ponyboy considered himself a Greaser but he is the farthest thing from that stereotype. Ponyboy
is intelligent, feels deeply and is not a violent person and that does not fit the Greaser stereotype.
Stereotyping is when you take a person and you compare them to a type of person. This is wrong
because not all people are the same. People are unique. There is no one type of person. Sadly, people
believe that anyone who is part of a gang is not smart, but Ponyboy shows them that he is. Ponyboy
got A s, but he was a Greaser. I used to make A s in English, Ponyboy said (Hinton 169). Yes, it is true
Ponyboy said used to, but he went through some rough drama. That means he was smart, and he really
tried in English. People think ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ponyboy did feel deeply about his friends and his loyalty to his gang, and sunsets. Greaser are just
normal people with normal feeling, but they choose to hide it. Maybe some of them can shut out their
emotions, but Ponyboy is not one of those people. He has emotions like fear and sadness just like us.
My stomach gave a violent start, and turned into a hunk of ice, Ponyboy said (154 155). He was
surprised, horrified, and a lot of other mixed emotions. In this scene Ponyboy s friend is shot by a cop.
Death is a scary thing, and there is no going back. Seeing this had to be traumatizing. Getting close to
dying, against your will may be even scarier. This happened to Ponyboy too. I was scared so bad I
wish it would. I screamed for Soda, Darry, anyone. (5). In this scene, he is getting drowned, and he is
wishing for death. It is hard to hid you emotion after experiencing so much

Essay about Black Holes
If theories of their existence are true, black holes are the most powerful force in the known physical
universe. Many people are familiar with the term black hole, but few people actually know anything
about them. A black hole forms as a result of a massive star running out of fuel to burn (Chaisson,
193). Once the star is no longer exerting outward force by burning off gases, it begins to collapse
under it s own intense, inward gravity (Chaisson, 193). It is like slowly letting the air out of a balloon.
Once the star is compacted to a certain size, while it s mass, or weight, remains the same, it s gravity
becomes so powerful that nothing can escape it (Hawking, 87). This critical size to weight ratio is
known as the Schwarzchild
Radius ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The simple formula for this, in physics, states that a body s escape velocity is equal to the square root
of it s mass, divided by it s radius
(Chaisson, 77). For example, if a body s mass is two hundred, and it s size is twelve and one half, the
escape velocity would be four. If the size of the same body is reduced to two, while it s mass remained
at two hundred, the escape velocity increases to ten. Since a black hole s size is always decreasing and
it s weight is always the same, the escape velocity is infinite (Chaisson,
195). This means that nothing can escape a black hole past the event horizon, not even light. Light is
made up of waves and particles. It was discovered, in 1676, by Danish astronomer, Ole
Christenson, that light travels at a very high, but finite speed (Hawking, 18). These properties of light
govern that it must be subject to forces of nature, such as gravity. Light travels at such a high speed
that it is not observably effected by gravity, unless that gravity is very strong. A black hole s gravity is
powerful enough to trap light because it s escape velocity, being infinite, exceeds the speed of light
(Hawking, 82). This is why a black hole is black. Once light crosses the event horizon it is drawn into
the hole in space. Although the light is still hitting objects, it is not able to bounce off to indicate their
existence to an observer,

The Used Car
In this negotiation, I played the role of the buyer of the car, Mazda MX – 6 from Francesco, who
played the role of the seller. The task involved negotiating for the right price for the used car.
When I was planning for the negotiation the most important criteria was that the car must certainly
have all those specifications which the 1994 Jeep Cherokee Sport was offering. That is, an air
conditioning, AM/FM stereo, 6 cylinder engine and the mileage should be the same or more than the
Jeep. Also, I had firmly decided to buy the Mazda under all circumstances and not go in for the jeep,
as it would certainly turn out to be a better proposition than the jeep. Moreover, I had mentally
prepared myself for the fact that looking at the gravity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Francesco made the first offer in this negotiation process of $8000, as mentioned earlier. I think it does
matter as to who puts the first offer because the first offer has a direct impact on your opponent. If
your first offer is extremely inflated, the other person thinks on the higher side and may close the deal
at a higher price than what he had thought of initially. However, if your offer is low, the other person
will try to manipulate you in such a way that he may tend to close the deal at even a lower price that
what he had aspired for. Therefore, I would always like my opponent to make the first offer so that he
does not get pre conceived notions about me and is not able to manipulate me to a great

A Research Study On Service Encounters
Service Encounters The interactions between various people can help explain social and cultural
differences, which overall allow us to gather information on the wide expanse of ideologies that
people from different economic and ethnic backgrounds hold and believe. Throughout this research
project I was able to build off of what I had learned from Benjamin Bailey s study and conduct
something similar to experience firsthand what beneficial information can be obtained from observing
various service encounters. Understanding that not every person feels the same way about how certain
social interactions should be carried out is important. This enables us to realize that some interactions
may come off as disrespectful, ill mannered, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They were both white males of average height and build. Quickly after listening to the beginning of
their conversation, it was clear they knew one another.
Example 1:

2. Customer: It s going good bro, what about you?
3. Attendant: Going good, how s ASU?
4. Customer: Pretty good, I m getting through it. *Light chuckle*
5. Attendant: Well I m glad to hear it, hope you have a good night.
6. Customer: You too man.
It was apparent that they had exchanged conversations maybe several times in the past and were on
more personal terms, where they knew things about one another. That was the first interaction I
witnessed that day, between the attendant and a customer that included a conversation that seemed
more informal and casual. My second example took place in the Mexican restaurant, Los Taquitos,
and the interaction I observed was between a young women and an older male. The attendant looked
around 16 18 and was a Mexican American woman. The customer seemed to be in his late 60 s and
was a Native American man who was in a wheelchair. They had a polite conversation and seemed to
be previously acquainted.

The Culture Of The Italian Culture
The Description The cultural group I decided to gain more insight on through this experience was the
Italian culture. Explain history and describe! The immersion experiences in which I participated were
great opportunities to learn about the culture in more depth. The first experience I was able to attend
was on June 13, 2015. In downtown Indianapolis Indiana, I had the opportunity to attend the Italian
Culture Festival. Organized each year by the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, this festival was full of
music, cultural food, and I was lucky enough to experience a traditional Italian religious procession
and Mass (Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2015). The festival was packed with people from the city
and from the Italian culture. I had never experienced a festival such as the one held in Indianapolis.
Being from the east coast and not of the Italian culture, the festival was a refreshing yet,
uncomfortable experience at times. I observed a traditional dance, the tarantella and those around the
area all seemed to know most of the steps or the words to some of the songs in the set they played.
The locals tried to get me to dance along but, I could not keep up with them on the fly. The tarantella
is one of the most famous of Italian dances and performers dance quickly to an upbeat song (Holy
Rosary Catholic Church, 2015). It is said that the performers sweat out the poison of a deadly tarantula
and the dance could last for hours and could be religious in nature to some.

Informative Essay On Coral Reefs
In the news reporters often talk about the effects of global warming as if they are anywhere from five
to one hundred years off in the future. Those dangers like unpredictable and catastrophic weather
patterns may not pose a major threat to human populations yet. However, for the inhabitants of earth s
coral reefs, the planet s constant warming immediately endangers thousands of species. While coral
reefs occupy only a small fraction of the ocean s floor, they account for roughly one fourth of the
world s marine life. Coral itself, which in large part comprises coral reefs is made up of thousands of
tiny polyps that cling together and secrete a hard outer coating binding the individual polyps together
(Jaap, 212 213). Generally coral make up the vast majority of all reefs, but soft bodied organisms like
anemones litter the sea bed as well. Coral reefs seemingly eternal balance with man is now in
jeopardy, as small things like clownfish infertility and massive coral population loss begin to
snowball, eventually leading to human casualties. These vibrant structures made up of millions of
years of development do not face potential threats from global warming. The existing threats are
imminent.
As mentioned, sea anemones accompany coral on the bottom of the earth s enormous seas. While this
may be true, anatomically they are greatly different from hard bodied corals. They cling to rocks on
the seabed using the bottom of their bodies, Their pedal disc, which functions a lot

Alcoholism In Crash Into Me
Peer Pressure is frequently involved with excessive drinking on college campuses. Alcohol is
prominent in the college culture because it is presented at many social affairs and is part of many
gatherings with peers. Because peers are the most salient social referents in the college environment,
they are a potent influence on alcohol use. Most new acquaintances at college will be drinkers: recent
research indicating that four out of five college students drink. In addition, college peers tend to be
more approving of alcohol use. Exposure to such drinking often leads to increased alcohol use:
students residing in places where heavy drinking is approved and where alcoholic beverages and the
places to consume them are readily available will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the book Crash Into Me by Liz Seccuro, the audience is taught one of the leading consequence of
alcoholism; rape. Some of the major causes of Alcoholism in college are: availability of alcohol(Pg.
44), social pressure(Pg. 46), and genetic susceptibility to alcohol. Exploring the causes of alcoholism
helps lead to the conclusion that alcohol is a huge part of college culture and there needs to be a policy
to help prevent alcoholistic incidents (like what happened in Crash Into Me) from happening. One
policy that can help with the problem of alcoholism in college is; imposing liability to the social host
that is responsible for the underaged drinking at the party. This policy proposes the idea that social
hosts are in violation of: furnishing alcohol to a minor, and allowing underaged drinking to occur on
property that they control. Thus leading to the point that; the social host may be prosecuted by the
State under a criminal statute and face a fine or imprisonment for the criminal violation (Alcohol
Policy Information System n.d.). This policy can be considered neutral because it contains both
conservative and liberal aspects. The policy proposes more of a moral stance on who s responsible for
the events that happen at the party and the results of what the alcohol does to the underaged drinkers
after the party. The idea of this policy is that the social host is responsible(as well as the person who
committed the crime) and receives a fine or imprisonment for the violation of the law. This policy
would help alcoholism in college because the social hosts would be more vigilant about who drinks or
does drugs at a party that takes place on property that they control. For example; a Fraternity decides
to throw a party, the fraternity mother/father would be in charge of knowing who is drinking and
would attempt to imply precautions to avoid a violation of the law that would ultimately have them
face imprisonment

Taking Sides: Violent Video Games There has been a long standing debate that violent video games
are harmful to the rising generations. The article that was selected to be critiqued is, Are Violent Video
Games Harmful to Children and Adolescents? . The purpose of this paper is to analyze and critique the
research methods and conclusions included by the author of the article. Summary Author, Steven F.
Gruel, argues that there is an overwhelming amount of science and research that supports the claim
that video games that are violent are indeed harmful to human development (Gruel 2010). It affects
their development by causing them to act more violently. He begins by discussing that over time,
usage of violent video games among youth has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This proves to be a problem as it does not give the reader all the details. The article expects the reader
to agree with the author without knowing the complete information. This takes away from the critical
thinking that the reader should do when reading an opinionated article. It is important for the reader to
be able to form an opinion on their own and not from just what the author tells them is true. An
example from the article is when he claimed that studies have shown evidence that exposure to violent
video games reduced the player s ability to control their impulses. (Gruel 2010) As a reader, this
statement is substantial to forming an opinion on the issue, but it lacks substance to deduct a thorough
understanding of what is being stated. There is no explanation of the experiment where the results
came from, no discussion of sample size, no explanation of the type of experiment, and no
documentation of the subjects. The reader is left to either fill in the blanks with their own assumptions
or blindly trust the author. Weakness: Suggests that Correlation does Equal Causation The next issue
that can be found, is he suggests that correlation found in studies equals causation. In the text, he
states, Several studies documented a negative relation between amount of time playing video games
and school performance among children, adolescents, and college students. (Gruel 2010). With this he
correlates video games with doing poorly in schools. This is a

The Battle Of Poitiers During The Hundred Year War
The next major battle that occurred during the Hundred Year War was the Battle of Poitiers. The Battle
of Poitiers was a battle that occurred after a six year break from war, warfare broke out again as
Edward III s son, Edward the Black Prince had attacked France in 1356. The French had a line of
defense, however Edward was able to break through the defenses and attacked the French head on.
The current king of France was King John II. Edward the Black Prince was able to cause a disastrous
battle in France and the result of the battle was that Edward the Black Prince was able to capture King
John II (Jean II) as well as almost 2,000 aristocracy members of France. Edward the Black Prince
wanted a ransom. France was at a loss without their king and did not know what to do so they signed
the Treaty of Bretigny in 1360 that states that they would cede a large amount of northern territory and
the shoreline to England. In exchange for this deal, Edward the Black Prince was required to give up
his claim to the throne. After the loss of the two great generals of England, Edward III and Edward the
Black Prince, the French regained control of most parts of France and in 1389 the two sides signed a
true as well as extended the treaty in 1396 for 28 years. In 1964, The Battle of Auray was the battle
where the English forces under John Chandos besieged Auray and the leader of the French army,
Bertrand du Guesclin, was captured. During this time, the French King known as King Jean II died

A Brief Note On Copyright And Remix Culture
How to Not Follow Copyright Law:
An Exploratory Essay on Copyright and Remix Culture
As time goes by, the rate at which art changes increases at a seemly exponential rate. Our culture has
more ways than ever to publish and distribute the things we make, and with the rise of the internet we
can reach any audience with a Wi Fi connection. This digital hyper connectivity has led many artists to
create new forms of art, some of which have gone on to start trends and cultures. One of these cultures
that has become a significant part of online media is Remix Culture. The idea of taking someone else s
art and making it your own is embraced and cherished by some, and detested by others. As this genre
of media has grown over the years, the line between what is and isn t a remix has drastically blurred.
Some will spend hours upon hours making a song sound completely different from its original
counterpart, while others will simply chop it up and call it their own. Though laws were once effective
when dealing with copyright infringement, the rate art has grown has significantly surpassed the rate
at which these laws have changed. People are beginning to monetize their remixes in various ways,
creating much controversy surrounding who should be getting paid, or if anyone should get paid at all.
As artists, it is important to know what these laws are exactly, so we can either abide by them or find
our own workarounds.
As soon as a work is created in a tangible, fixed form, it is

Inquiry On The Humanities Classroom Essay
Inquiry Learning in the Humanities Classroom
1.0 What is Inquiry Learning in Humanities and Social Sciences?
Humanities and Social sciences is one of the most important subjects in the Australian Curriculum
because it leads students into learning about people and how people interact with each other and the
environment. It is foundational to sustainable practices and civic responsibility.
As parents, you may remember Geography; History; Business and Economics; and Civics and
Citizenship as being about absorbing facts that schools thought important for you to learn. Or you
might remember doing projects that seemed like time fillers in the scheme of what was important at
school (What is Inquiry Based Learning, 2004). You will also be aware of how fast the world is
changing and the impact of technology on the growth of information that surrounds us. You may have
experienced redundancy, elections or a global recession and understand that knowing facts is not very
useful for navigating difficult times. Facts alone do not educate students in what is needed to think
critically and creatively about a situation, to find opportunities in hardship or to learn and relearn in
the new knowledge economy (Warlick, 2013). Inquiry learning is a way of addressing the teaching of
skills and dispositions that will be essential for your children to thrive as active and informed citizens
of the future (Reynolds, 2014; ACARA, 2016).
The inquiry process includes children and teachers both

The Causes Of Mass Violence And Video Games
Over the past couple years, mass crime has been a rising issue. Many experts have desperately been
seeking answers as to why these outbreaks have been occurring. However, maybe the answer is closer
than it appears. Across the country, mass violence has been a tragic and frequent problem. Video
games have been a popular topic when it comes to the investigation of the criminals committing these
cynical acts. But could it be possible that these violent video games actually are enabling an outlet to
unwind and shed the stress rather than influencing crime? In America, violent episodes over the years
have skyrocketed due to psychological stress. Video Games and other various forms of media,
however, offer a person an outlet or coping mechanism when facing emotional pressure. Therefore, by
making these forms of entertainment more affordable and accessible to all, American leaders could
greatly reduce episodes of mass violence. Experts have been hunting explanations for the outbreaks
across America. Many fingers cannot help but to point towards video games. Video games over the
years have advanced tremendously when it comes to their realistic qualities. Because some of these
video games have such dark content, it raises concern in certain people. However in an article written
by Ryan Dube, he states that. Although it is a big claim to make, it is proven many times over that
playing video games can relieve your stress, reduce your depression, and make you feel better . By

Commentary on: Pecan market is a crackin
In the last few years the economic growth of China has caused the demand (and supply) of all kinds of
nuts, especially pecans, to rise and producers are facing a challenge meeting the soaring demand, says
The Globe and Mail October 18th 2010.
Demand and supply are the quantity of a good or service that consumers and producers are willing
able to purchase and produce at a given price in a given time period. Equilibrium is a state of rest, self
perpetuating in the absence of outside disturbance. At this price, the quantity demanded equals
quantity supplied. Price elasticity of demand (PED) is the responsiveness of demand in change of
price of the product of the consumer. Price elasticity of supply ... Show more content on

This sends a signal to suppliers to increase price until a new equilibrium is reached at price P1 and
quantity demanded Q1.
However, instead of keeping the price at P1, the suppliers will rather shift the supply curve to the right
by exporting more pecans because the Chinese demand is greater than the demand North American
demand and they can make more profit by allocating resources to China instead. Here we assume that
PE is greater than North American price of pecans.
This causes a positive shift in supply for China, from SC to SC1. Now, at price P1, Q1 pecans is
demanded, but Q2 is supplied, so we have excess supply. Suppliers have to decrease the price until
equilibrium is reached at price PE again and quantity supplied is 100 million pounds.

I looked over at what she was pointing at and saw a mechanism that looked like tree clippers. I couldn

Ok honey let s go to the bathroom. Mom was always great at handling gross stuff like this. I, however,

Biography Of Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton s Antarctic...
Introduction Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was an Irish born British explorer who led an unsuccessful
trans Antarctic expedition that nearly cost him and his crew of 27 their lives when his ship, the
Endurance, was trapped and eventually crushed by ice. The Endurance party repeatedly faced what
were surely going to be fatal situations; yet each time they beat the odds and survived. While their
survival may be in some part due to luck or providence, Shackleton s leadership is widely credited
with tipping the scales in their favor. This historic journey, documented in the WBGH film Shackleton
s Antarctic Adventure (2001), reveals some examples of Shackleton s transformational and
transactional leadership behaviors and traits. History On ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After 36 hours of trekking across the unmapped island, they arrived at the whaling station. Shortly
after Shackleton and his team arrived at Stromness, a boat was sent to rescue the other two crew
members on the opposite side of South Georgia. Shortly thereafter, Shackleton set out in a borrowed
ship to save the 22 men he had left behind on Elephant Island, but ice continually thwarted his
attempts for more than four more months. Finally, on August 30, 1916, Shackleton was able to reach
Elephant Island and rescue his stranded crew. As he neared land, he anxiously counted the figures on
the beach and told his second in command Worsley, They re all there, Skipper. They are all safe
(Shackleton s Antarctic Adventure (2001) @ 37:41). Miraculously, not a single life had been lost
during the two year ordeal. Lessons in leadership Bass s (1990) transformational transactional
leadership theory contains nine elements; charisma (or idealized influence), inspirational motivation,
intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration, contingent reward, management by exception
(active and passive), and Laissez Faire (no leadership). Shackleton demonstrated many of these
leadership elements while leading his crewmen on the Endurance expedition. Shackleton was certainly
charismatic. He was able to convince Sir James Key Caird to donate £24,000 (James Caird Society,
n.d.) to fund this expedition due to his charisma. He was also able to convince 27 men to follow him

The Conflict Of Indian Muslims
Communities are established upon the foundations of shared language, geography and history, not
solely religion. An example of failed attempt to build a nation on the basis of religion is
Israel . Since Jews settled there from all over the globe, with difference ethnicities, backgrounds and
languages etc., the country is engaged in constant internal conflict and disagreements, which has made
it clear that nations cannot be built upon the basis of religion.
On the other hand the two nation ideology stated that Muslims and Hindus in the Indian subcontinent
are two separate nations with their prime identity being religion. The ideology was a founding
principle of Pakistan Movement. Defining an ideology in which religion was a determining factor of
Indian Muslims was coined by Jinnah who declared it as an awakening of Muslims to create a separate
country.
But what is ideology? It is characterized as a collective set of principles, ideas and moral values that
constitute the goals and aspirations of a society, group, or person; it shapes their actions and motives
for the future and gives meaning to their lives. The concept of ideology is present in everything from
politics to sociology.
As the world changes, older and widely accepted ideologies are brought to question and when
established beliefs are challenged, it leads to heated disagreements and a lot of confusion as it strikes

Capitalism Essay
Capitalism
Throughout my duration in college, business has been my major area of concentration. Capitalism is
the most central and consequential topic which has to do with business. The ideals of capitalism, over
time, have faced much scrutiny. Many great minds within the past two centuries have discredited
capitalism, for the virtues of socialism and the whole of society. It is my intent to put forth a moral
justification of the ideals behind capitalism. Ayn Rand said The moral justification of capitalism does
not lie in the altruist claim that it represents the best way to achieve the common good .
It is true that capitalism does, if that catch phrase has any meaning, but this is merely a secondary ...

Assuming that consumers are most concerned with their own self interest, the demand for goods that
are the most useful or helpful for society will arise. Assuming, also, that producers are most concerned
with their own self interest, they will further their own cause by striving to produce those goods which
will be the most useful to society at the lowest possible cost. Many economists have debated that
capitalism is practical because it allows each individual to align their actions with their own thoughts,
instead of acting under the demands of bureaucrats. A multitude of minds attack each problem under
capitalism. The successful thinkers thrive because they are able to see the opportunities that the other
thinkers do not.
They think of new products and come up with more efficient production methods which are
innovative to their field. Everyone is able to begin a business, raise money, and market his own
product in a free market, and each individual thinker is free to use his own ideas, and his success or
failure is based on the merits of his own idea. The successful thinker brings improved and new
products at a lower cost which creates economic advance and opulence. In order to fully understand
capitalism, we must have some understanding of other politico economic systems. Socialism is a
theory of social organization that advocates the ownership and control of industry,

The Importance Of Charter Schools

serve the same specific set of educational objectives that a public school would have. Another aspect
of charter schools is that they have to take any state required tests. A trend also found in charter
schools is to serve primarily minority schools and low income students. The percentage of student s

Questions on Assumptions
Student first and last names Course title and number Professor s name Due date Asking the Right
Questions: Chapters 6 8 1. Assumptions are statements that are unstated most of the time; they are
statements that are potentially deceptive. Assumptions are necessary in that they provide support for
the conclusion in an argument. One can identify assumptions in arguments by locating significant
ambiguity, particularly in the conclusion of an argument. One may additionally locate assumptions by
engaging in role reversal, or in layman s terms, playing devil s advocate for an argument. 2. A value
assumption is an implicit preference for a particular value over another particular value within a
specific context. One of Leopold s value assumptions from his writing is that protecting wolves is
ethical. He values the environment a great deal; his value assumption connects the strength of
preference for his value to his fundamental argument for environmental ethics, as well as redeems him
for his past behavior of hunting wolves. 3. Value conflicts exist as the differing values that stem from
different frames of reference, implying that values are relative. A value conflict of modern society
comes from the drive to continue the process of becoming modern, which typically includes the
sacrifice of nature, while maintaining respect and admiration for nature. 4. Descriptive assumptions
are beliefs regarding how the world operates. One may identify assumptions in arguments by

Canadian teenager who lived during World War II. Ellen is also another protagonist along with
Stephen, and she apts to be a firm and a stubborn person. For instance, when Ellen and Stephen

minor characters include Stephen s and Ellen s parents as each parent helps shapes the main character

Implementing A Formal Project Management Program
Each project has unique and distinctive elements that must be addressed during the planning and
execution of the endeavor. These elements become more heightened when an organization is
implementing a new procedure or method for the first time. For this reason, an organization must be
flexible to seek out support when problems arise and undertake novel approaches to amend processes.
Six Sigma and earned value management (EVM) are innovative methods that assist organizations in
expanding quality, monitoring a project effectively, and offering tools to improve customer
satisfaction, cost effectiveness, and products and services.
Background
Franklin Electronics is in need of assistance in developing a formal project management program that

The Value Of Goodwill And Goodwill Essay
What is goodwill? Based on the information on the internet, goodwill is defined as the excess of
purchase price over the fair market value of a company s identifiable assets and liabilities. Moreover,
goodwill is reported as a non current asset on the balance sheet. But the U.S companies are not
required to amortize the record amount of goodwill since 2001. Because the value of goodwill is
highly subjective, the accounting standard requires the goodwill to have impairment test at least once
per year in order to determine the amount of goodwill. However, when reporting the goodwill in terms
of valuation and impairment, there are some rules that people need to follow under the US GAAP.
Moreover, there are also some similarities and differences regarding valuation and impairment of
goodwill between US GAAP(Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and IFRS(International
Financial Reporting Standards). First of all, under US GAAP on ASC 805, the value of goodwill can
be recognized initially by measuring any excess of the fair value of the acquired business over the fair
value of the net identifiable assets acquired. According to the ASC 805 30 30 1 from the FASB
website, it mentions that The acquirer shall recognize goodwill as of the acquisition date, measured as
the excess of (a) over (b): (a) The aggregate of the following: (1) The consideration transferred

Outsourcing And Re Shoring Production
A globalizing economy along with cheap telecommunications technology is making it effortless for
countless occupations that were formerly invulnerable to offshoring to be sent overseas. As
globalization advances, the off shoring movement is likely to escalate as well. Nonetheless, numerous
manufacturing companies such as Caterpillar, Bosh, and Phillips have disclosed that they will return
part of their off shored production to their home countries.(When Manufacturing moves back 1)
Throughout this paper I will discuss the politics of offshoring and re shoring production as well as

offshoring is not a new topic in the global business world. Offshoring has matured into a high profile
argument over the last few decades. As a result of offshoring, countries like the United States have
exported countless jobs to foreign countries. As technology improves as well as the modernization of
countries such as China and India higher numbers of service jobs will be moved offshore (The Next

created a heavy political toll. Offshoring has led to increased amount of jobs and rising standards of

Regular season play went reasonably well, but the highlight of the season was when the team went to
The Yellowstone Cup in Rexburg, Idaho. This is where we had the most growth as a team and where I
learned the most about tactics as a coach.

Everyone was keyed up for the game. You could feel the energy on the field, it was contagious. After
warm ups the referees had us line up and walk onto the field and face the crowd, so our fans could
take pictures of us. Once the referee blew the whistle and the game started the intensity instantly
doubled. Right as the game started, I could see the new formation we worked on in our game against
Bridger valley that morning wasn t going to work. The Pocatello players were penetrating our defense.
Changing formations on the fly with young players is extremely difficult. While I was struggling to
get the team to understand what I wanted them to do, Pocatello scored. I did a couple substitutions at
the restart, so I could put the team back in its regular formation. We continued to fight for the rest of
the half, but we just couldn t get any shots in the net. Right before the half ended one of my speedy
outside defenders collided with another player and went down. Her knee popped and hurt to walk on,
so she could no longer play. The trainer that was covering the game said nothing in her knee was torn,
but it probably would be best if she didn t continue to play. The referee restarted the game, and we
continued until halftime. At halftime we talked about staying calm and passing the ball instead of just
trying to kick it down the middle of the field. Once the game started in the first few minutes we
controlled the ball and had a

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Bipolar Disorder
Elin Larsson Professor Faraji Psychology 25 Abnormal Psychology November 6th 2014 Article
Assignment Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental illness, and is characterized by alternating between
elevated moods such as mania or the milder condition hypomania and periods of depression. Bipolar
disorder often shows during late teens or early adult years. At least half of all cases start before the age
of 25. Some people experience symptoms during childhood, while others might develop symptoms
late in life ( Bipolar Disorder in Adults ). The purpose of the study was to investigate if quetiapine
monotheraphy is an effective medication in managing relapse or recurrence of critical elevations in
mood and the tolerance level of quetiapine amongst ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was a case control, which compared the subjects who have bipolar disorder with subjects who do
not bipolar disorder but are otherwise alike, like same sex and age. The main focus of the comparison
between the participants and the control subjects were weight, BMI and cognitive functioning as the
study proceeded. The subjects started with a period of 8 weeks where quetiapine was titrated against
clinical symptoms with an increase of 50 mg per day to 800mg per day while other
psychopharmaceutical drugs were halted. After the titration phase, subjects pursued to consume
quetiapine at bedtime for a maximum of 40 weeks. Since this was a monotheraphy treatment, a
maximum of 10 mg of the sleeping aid zopiclone, and the anti anxiety medication clonazepam of 2 mg
were permitted to be consumed per day. During the eight first weeks of the study period, visits were
scheduled for the subject where the research psychiatrist assessed the patients according to Young
Mania Rating Scale, Montgomery Asperg Depression Scale (MADRS), Clinical Global Impressions
Severity Scale (CGI S), Clinical global Assessment scale (CGAS) and the Affective Morbidity Index
(AMI). After eight weeks, study visits were scheduled for at least once a month during the course of
the study where the same assessment procedures took place. Each patient

Repetition in David Lves Plays Words, Words, Words and...
David Ives really experiments with repetition throughout all of his plays. Two examples of these plays
would be Words, Words, Words and Sure Thing Form his collection of plays called All in the Timing.
There are many different examples of repetition in each play. Ives repeats one certain thing and makes
this repetition mean many different things. In Sure Thing there is the repetition of the bell, which
represent how we tend to make snap judgments on people, and how we all strive for perfection. He
also uses the repetition of the words sure thing to represent how nothing in life can really be
considered a sure thing. In contrast in Words, Words, Words Ives uses the repetition of the Monkey s
typing to represent how sometimes luck gets us to where we need to be. Ives also uses the repetition of
Milton exhibiting typical Monkey behavior to show how we can repetition as a form of manipulation
The bell rings twenty eight times in Sure Thing. Every time Bill says something that Betty does not
find desirable the bell will ring and Bill gets another chance to woo her. Ives uses the repetition of the
bell ringing to show how we as humans make snap judgments on people. As soon as we learn one fact
about a person we base everything they say on that one fact and that it is very hard to come back from
a bad first impression. Bill s ability to gage Betty s reaction allows him to manipulate her to make
himself seem more desirable. This results in him succeeding and them leaving

Mindfulness Reflection Paper
I have a somewhat regular, yet sincere contemplative mindfulness practice that helps me understand
why I experience life the way I do both internally and externally. I get to see my own urges, those I m
not really aware of such as the urge to multi task. Practicing mindfulness meditation and other
mindfulness practices I learned to become in touch with my own urges and to control them through
awareness and self discipline. So, here are a few reflections for your coffee time. As you sip on your
deliciously made aromatic coffee, tea or hot cocoa accept these thoughts for your reflection.
Finally, at the 3rd mindfulness class I took with Daniel, I decided to do the homework he had
suggested to everyone, which was to do one thing we do routinely during the day, mindfully. That is to
be with the experience of it and fully giving it our undivided attention. For example, if we chose
brushing our teeth, he said, to brush slowly, feel every stroke as the brush moved around the mouth,
what it felt like, the taste of the tooth paste, what the mind was doing; observe everything about that
experience, while also focusing on our breath. This was our mindfulness exercise, which to me didn t
sound too exciting. It took a lot of self discipline to be able to stay with an activity and not wonder off
in the mind. So,I never did the tooth brush exercise.
Until that final day of having burnt my 967th pita bread and screamed to myself, this is so annoying. It
s not acceptable anymore!

Examples Of Trauma In Catcher In The Rye
Various factors like traumas and the occurrence of small incidents during childhood may affect your
opinion on life. Catcher in the Rye chronicles the life of Holden and the way he perceives his
surroundings with a childlike innocence and his wish to preserve the innocence and purity of others,
especially children. Throughout the book, Holden has shown these characteristics in a subtle fashion.
During his journey after his leaving of Prencey Prep, Holden went to visit his sister Phoebe at her
school but discovers vulgar words written on the walls. Another incident that indicates his perception
of the world was when he encounters an elevator boy who then introduces him to a prostitute. Prior to
meeting with Phoebe, Holden visits a museum, The

Is Leavitt A Living Thing
I think the point Leavitt is making is how life is a very complicated subject to try to understand. There
may not ever be a true definition to the word life . Like Leavitt said, One could always find
exceptions. There is still no true distinction from living and nonliving things. Yes, all living things are
supposed to possess the traits of being able to reproduce, maintain homeostasis, take in a form of
energy whether it s through direct food intake, or from sunlight, and so on and so forth. However,
sometimes one thing that we may consider a living thing might not contain all of these traits. One
example is a virus. Some people say it s alive others say it s not. It can respond to stimuli, has DNA to
pass to offspring, and other simple

  • 2. Pros And Cons Of Utilitarianism 1. Utilitarian s believe animals should be considered as equally morally relevant as humans because the rights/interests of all beings aside from any form of discrimination or prejudice (speciesism) should be morally relevant. That being said, like humans, non human animals possess sentience, or the the ability to experience pain and pleasure. Having sentience is enough to say that non human animals therefore also possess interests, interests that are similar (although not exact) to those of a human. These common interests include being pain free, and living a life free from suffering. Because utilitarianism entails taking into consideration the like interests of every party involved, animals must then be taken into consideration, when appropriate, ... Regan rejects utilitarianism as an answer for whether zoos are morally defensible because utilitarianism requires extensive information regarding how much good or bad/ costs and benefits are generated for all who are effected. Regan argues that the extent of information that would be required to use utilitarianism as an answer to the question is more information than can possibly be attained. In other words, there are far too many aspects and interests of humans and non humans to take into consideration equally. It is an unachievable task and therefore Regan believes deciphering the question via the rights view is a more tangible ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Animal Farm Essay on Utopia THE UTOPIAN DREAM, WHILE NOBLE, IS SHORT SIGHTED BECAUSE IT FAILS TO ACCOUNT FOR THE FLAWS IN HUMAN NATURE. George Orwell s allegorical novel Animal Farm demonstrates the rapid shift from hopeful Utopian Dream, to reproachful dystopian nightmare as a result of fundamental flaws in human nature, such as avarice, selfishness and the thirst for power over others. In the novel, the animals are promised a better life if they revolt and institute the system of Animalism, then they are promised a better life if they build the windmill and, if all else fails, the raven promises a better afterlife on Sugarcandy Mountain . However, the animals ultimately never achieve their utopia because of the avaricious and power hungry nature of Napoleon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The resigned apathy and passivity of some of the animals allows for faster erosion of the dream of equality and allows for the pigs to maintain the power that wasn t rightfully theirs. A typical example of general passivity towards the pigs actions was Benjamin, the old donkey. Having knowledge of the pig s hypocrisy, Benjamin consciously decided against actions of rebellion against the pigs, instead resigning himself to the fact that he could not help the situation. After Boxer s death, Clover is so emotionally destroyed by his sudden disappearance that she ceases to do anything. In accepting his death as the pigs tell her, she is being passive and not searching for her own conclusions, even though she had doubts about it. It these, plus many more examples of passivity towards the pig s reign, that concludes in the animals having to forfeit any hope of the once so real, Utopian Dream. Animal Farm is the story of the animals that rebel against their master in order to achieve their dream of a utopian society. The book opens in an optimistic mood as Old Major in his speech describes a simple, natural farm in which all the animals are free and equal. But gradually this energetic and positive mood disappears, as the animals difficulties become progressively ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Similarities Between La Belle Dame Sans Merci And Annabel Lee Love in Poe s Annabel Lee and Keats s La Belle Dame sans Merci Poe s Annabel Lee and Keats s La Belle Dame sans Merci depict the destructive effects that women exercise upon men. In both poems, women, by death and deception, harm their adoring lovers. In Annabel Lee, Annabel dies and leaves the speaker in isolation; in La Belle Dame Sans Merci, the fairy, La Belle Dame, captures the speaker s heart, and then deserts him. The common theme of both poems, that love generates harmful effects, is a reflection of both poets upsetting and harmful childhood experiences. He creates an aroma of sex in pacing steed, which might be an innocent horse ride, but is possibly a sexual metaphor (the speaker being the steed.) The repetition of wild eyes is a sexual euphemism, furthering the sexual nature of love expressed within the poem. Even the knight s last memory of the fairy is of a sexual nature; the knight receives kisses four, afterwards the fairy lulls him to sleep. Keats s love is relatively more tenuous than Poe s, because the fairy s love is unpredictable, and bizarre ( In language strange she said / I love thee true ). This love is also destructive, as warned by the dead men in the last stanza with their horrid warning that La Belle Dame/ Thee hath in thrall! Poe and Keats employ the their speakers painful experiences with love as examples of love s ruinous consequences. La Belle Dame sans Merci and Annabel Lee develop their characters with attention to details, so that the impact of the characters experiences are more intense and vivid.. • 6. The Merchant Of Venice, Antony And Cleopatra, And Dr Faustus Whilst the writer s selection of place bears great significance throughout many eras, the Renaissance period is particularly fascinating in relation to setting. These playwrights were living through an extraordinary and unprecedented flowering of drama and, consequentially, were afforded opportunities that would have been unimaginable even a century before. The flourishing of drama necessitated the creation of playhouses, in which setting could be conveyed more accurately and elaborately than in the millennia that preceded. The combination of the uninhibited creativity associated with the Renaissance and the realisation of the new possibilities of the commercial stage facilitated an extremely nuanced and complex exploration of setting and place; providing us with some of the most memorable and meaningful settings ever featured in literature. Setting provides a unique opportunity, if chosen astutely, for the playwright to communicate narrative, and shape character, without having to explicitly or linguistically express it. I intend to focus The Merchant of Venice, Antony and Cleopatra, and Dr Faustus in order to display how setting directly affects the plot and often aids in forging our understanding of identities within the play. Through consideration of the implications and ideals attached to the settings presented throughout the texts, we can more accurately infer the sentiments of the writer and understand the ways in which place gives impetus to plot. • 7. Informative Essay On Ufos Reports of an alien UFO being intercepted by jet fighters have circulated the Internet. Residents of an otherwise quiet English town were awoken to blasting jet engines earlier this month. Jet fighters from a nearby military base scrambled toward the English coast to intercept what was said to be a UFO. The UFO was reported by fisherman to have risen from the water. The flight tracking of the jets showed that they were circling something. But the government reported that it was not a UFO, but an Air France flight. New footage on YouTube taken by fisherman tell a different story. UFO Dives Into Sea A recent YouTube video shows footage from a fishing boat capturing jets and a helicopter circling a UFO. The YouTube channel Christopher Stokes published the footage on May 25. It shows jets and a helicopter attempting to make contact with a UFO before it dives into the sea. The fishermen are of course hysterical as the booming engines of the jets buzz by before the UFO simply disappears into the water. A helicopter than does a flyby, and the footage ends. Could this be real footage? If so, how did they get it off the boat? Have those fishermen been assassinated? A Hoax or Possibly Real? The footage of the jets, helicopter, and UFO is definitely suspicious. It is fuzzy, pixelated, and the UFO isn t to clear. One odd feature of the footage is that the UFO ... • 8. Stereotypes In The Outsiders By S. E. Hinton Ponyboy Was Never Like the Rest of the Greasers What is a stereotype? In the book The Outsider by S.E Hinton, Ponyboy the main character is a member of a gang called the Greasers. People have fixed ideas or stereotypes about what gangs are like. Ponyboy considered himself a Greaser but he is the farthest thing from that stereotype. Ponyboy is intelligent, feels deeply and is not a violent person and that does not fit the Greaser stereotype. Stereotyping is when you take a person and you compare them to a type of person. This is wrong because not all people are the same. People are unique. There is no one type of person. Sadly, people believe that anyone who is part of a gang is not smart, but Ponyboy shows them that he is. Ponyboy got A s, but he was a Greaser. Once the star is no longer exerting outward force by burning off gases, it begins to collapse under it s own intense, inward gravity (Chaisson, 193). It is like slowly letting the air out of a balloon. Once the star is compacted to a certain size, while it s mass, or weight, remains the same, it s gravity becomes so powerful that nothing can escape it (Hawking, 87). This critical size to weight ratio is known as the Schwarzchild Radius ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The simple formula for this, in physics, states that a body s escape velocity is equal to the square root of it s mass, divided by it s radius (Chaisson, 77). For example, if a body s mass is two hundred, and it s size is twelve and one half, the escape velocity would be four. If the size of the same body is reduced to two, while it s mass remained at two hundred, the escape velocity increases to ten. Since a black hole s size is always decreasing and it s weight is always the same, the escape velocity is infinite (Chaisson, 195). This means that nothing can escape a black hole past the event horizon, not even light. Light is made up of waves and particles. It was discovered, in 1676, by Danish astronomer, Ole Christenson, that light travels at a very high, but finite speed (Hawking, 18). These properties of light govern that it must be subject to forces of nature, such as gravity. Light travels at such a high speed that it is not observably effected by gravity, unless that gravity is very strong. A black hole s gravity is powerful enough to trap light because it s escape velocity, being infinite, exceeds the speed of light (Hawking, 82). This is why a black hole is black. Once light crosses the event horizon it is drawn into the hole in space. Although the light is still hitting objects, it is not able to bounce off to indicate their existence to an observer, ... • 10. The Used Car In this negotiation, I played the role of the buyer of the car, Mazda MX – 6 from Francesco, who played the role of the seller. The task involved negotiating for the right price for the used car. When I was planning for the negotiation the most important criteria was that the car must certainly have all those specifications which the 1994 Jeep Cherokee Sport was offering. That is, an air conditioning, AM/FM stereo, 6 cylinder engine and the mileage should be the same or more than the Jeep. Also, I had firmly decided to buy the Mazda under all circumstances and not go in for the jeep, as it would certainly turn out to be a better proposition than the jeep. Francesco made the first offer in this negotiation process of $8000, as mentioned earlier. If your first offer is extremely inflated, the other person thinks on the higher side and may close the deal at a higher price than what he had thought of initially. However, if your offer is low, the other person will try to manipulate you in such a way that he may tend to close the deal at even a lower price that what he had aspired for. The immersion experiences in which I participated were great opportunities to learn about the culture in more depth. The first experience I was able to attend was on June 13, 2015. In downtown Indianapolis Indiana, I had the opportunity to attend the Italian Culture Festival. Organized each year by the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, this festival was full of music, cultural food, and I was lucky enough to experience a traditional Italian religious procession and Mass (Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2015). The festival was packed with people from the city and from the Italian culture. I had never experienced a festival such as the one held in Indianapolis. Being from the east coast and not of the Italian culture, the festival was a refreshing yet, uncomfortable experience at times. I observed a traditional dance, the tarantella and those around the area all seemed to know most of the steps or the words to some of the songs in the set they played. The locals tried to get me to dance along but, I could not keep up with them on the fly. The tarantella is one of the most famous of Italian dances and performers dance quickly to an upbeat song (Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 2015). It is said that the performers sweat out the poison of a deadly tarantula and the dance could last for hours and could be religious in nature to some. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Informative Essay On Coral Reefs In the news reporters often talk about the effects of global warming as if they are anywhere from five to one hundred years off in the future. Those dangers like unpredictable and catastrophic weather patterns may not pose a major threat to human populations yet. However, for the inhabitants of earth s coral reefs, the planet s constant warming immediately endangers thousands of species. While coral reefs occupy only a small fraction of the ocean s floor, they account for roughly one fourth of the world s marine life. Coral itself, which in large part comprises coral reefs is made up of thousands of tiny polyps that cling together and secrete a hard outer coating binding the individual polyps together (Jaap, 212 213). Generally coral make up the vast majority of all reefs, but soft bodied organisms like anemones litter the sea bed as well. Coral reefs seemingly eternal balance with man is now in jeopardy, as small things like clownfish infertility and massive coral population loss begin to snowball, eventually leading to human casualties. These vibrant structures made up of millions of years of development do not face potential threats from global warming. The existing threats are imminent. As mentioned, sea anemones accompany coral on the bottom of the earth s enormous seas. While this may be true, anatomically they are greatly different from hard bodied corals. Alcohol is prominent in the college culture because it is presented at many social affairs and is part of many gatherings with peers. Because peers are the most salient social referents in the college environment, they are a potent influence on alcohol use. Most new acquaintances at college will be drinkers: recent research indicating that four out of five college students drink. In addition, college peers tend to be more approving of alcohol use. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the book Crash Into Me by Liz Seccuro, the audience is taught one of the leading consequence of alcoholism; rape. Some of the major causes of Alcoholism in college are: availability of alcohol(Pg. 44), social pressure(Pg. 46), and genetic susceptibility to alcohol. Exploring the causes of alcoholism helps lead to the conclusion that alcohol is a huge part of college culture and there needs to be a policy to help prevent alcoholistic incidents (like what happened in Crash Into Me) from happening. One policy that can help with the problem of alcoholism in college is; imposing liability to the social host that is responsible for the underaged drinking at the party. This policy proposes the idea that social hosts are in violation of: furnishing alcohol to a minor, and allowing underaged drinking to occur on property that they control. Thus leading to the point that; the social host may be prosecuted by the State under a criminal statute and face a fine or imprisonment for the criminal violation (Alcohol Policy Information System n.d.). This policy can be considered neutral because it contains both conservative and liberal aspects. The policy proposes more of a moral stance on who s responsible for the events that happen at the party and the results of what the alcohol does to the underaged drinkers after the party. The idea of this policy is that the social host is responsible(as well as the person who committed the crime) and receives a fine or imprisonment for the violation of the law. This policy would help alcoholism in college because the social hosts would be more vigilant about who drinks or does drugs at a party that takes place on property that they control. For example; a Fraternity decides to throw a party, the fraternity mother/father would be in charge of knowing who is drinking and would attempt to imply precautions to avoid a violation of the law that would ultimately have them face imprisonment ... The Battle of Poitiers was a battle that occurred after a six year break from war, warfare broke out again as Edward III s son, Edward the Black Prince had attacked France in 1356. The French had a line of defense, however Edward was able to break through the defenses and attacked the French head on. The current king of France was King John II. Edward the Black Prince was able to cause a disastrous battle in France and the result of the battle was that Edward the Black Prince was able to capture King John II (Jean II) as well as almost 2,000 aristocracy members of France. Edward the Black Prince wanted a ransom. France was at a loss without their king and did not know what to do so they signed the Treaty of Bretigny in 1360 that states that they would cede a large amount of northern territory and the shoreline to England. In exchange for this deal, Edward the Black Prince was required to give up his claim to the throne. Our culture has more ways than ever to publish and distribute the things we make, and with the rise of the internet we can reach any audience with a Wi Fi connection. This digital hyper connectivity has led many artists to create new forms of art, some of which have gone on to start trends and cultures. One of these cultures that has become a significant part of online media is Remix Culture. The idea of taking someone else s art and making it your own is embraced and cherished by some, and detested by others. As this genre of media has grown over the years, the line between what is and isn t a remix has drastically blurred. Some will spend hours upon hours making a song sound completely different from its original counterpart, while others will simply chop it up and call it their own. Though laws were once effective when dealing with copyright infringement, the rate art has grown has significantly surpassed the rate at which these laws have changed. People are beginning to monetize their remixes in various ways, creating much controversy surrounding who should be getting paid, or if anyone should get paid at all. Humanities and Social sciences is one of the most important subjects in the Australian Curriculum because it leads students into learning about people and how people interact with each other and the environment. It is foundational to sustainable practices and civic responsibility. As parents, you may remember Geography; History; Business and Economics; and Civics and Citizenship as being about absorbing facts that schools thought important for you to learn. Or you might remember doing projects that seemed like time fillers in the scheme of what was important at school (What is Inquiry Based Learning, 2004). You will also be aware of how fast the world is changing and the impact of technology on the growth of information that surrounds us. You may have experienced redundancy, elections or a global recession and understand that knowing facts is not very useful for navigating difficult times. Facts alone do not educate students in what is needed to think critically and creatively about a situation, to find opportunities in hardship or to learn and relearn in the new knowledge economy (Warlick, 2013). Across the country, mass violence has been a tragic and frequent problem. Video games have been a popular topic when it comes to the investigation of the criminals committing these cynical acts. But could it be possible that these violent video games actually are enabling an outlet to unwind and shed the stress rather than influencing crime? In America, violent episodes over the years have skyrocketed due to psychological stress. Video Games and other various forms of media, however, offer a person an outlet or coping mechanism when facing emotional pressure. Finally, on August 30, 1916, Shackleton was able to reach Elephant Island and rescue his stranded crew. Many great minds within the past two centuries have discredited capitalism, for the virtues of socialism and the whole of society. It is my intent to put forth a moral justification of the ideals behind capitalism. Ayn Rand said The moral justification of capitalism does not lie in the altruist claim that it represents the best way to achieve the common good . It is true that capitalism does, if that catch phrase has any meaning, but this is merely a secondary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Assuming that consumers are most concerned with their own self interest, the demand for goods that are the most useful or helpful for society will arise. Assuming, also, that producers are most concerned with their own self interest, they will further their own cause by striving to produce those goods which will be the most useful to society at the lowest possible cost. Many economists have debated that capitalism is practical because it allows each individual to align their actions with their own thoughts, instead of acting under the demands of bureaucrats. A multitude of minds attack each problem under capitalism. The successful thinkers thrive because they are able to see the opportunities that the other thinkers do not. They think of new products and come up with more efficient production methods which are innovative to their field. Everyone is able to begin a business, raise money, and market his own product in a free market, and each individual thinker is free to use his own ideas, and his success or failure is based on the merits of his own idea. The successful thinker brings improved and new products at a lower cost which creates economic advance and opulence. The Importance Of Charter Schools After reading chapter eight of Spring, I believe that charter schools play a large role in our public education system, as well as the other multiple education systems talked about in the reading such as home schooling, or private schools. Charter schools are in fact public schools, but they might not serve the same specific set of educational objectives that a public school would have. Another aspect of charter schools is that they have to take any state required tests. A trend also found in charter schools is to serve primarily minority schools and low income students. Assumptions are statements that are unstated most of the time; they are statements that are potentially deceptive. Assumptions are necessary in that they provide support for the conclusion in an argument. One can identify assumptions in arguments by locating significant ambiguity, particularly in the conclusion of an argument. One may additionally locate assumptions by engaging in role reversal, or in layman s terms, playing devil s advocate for an argument. 2. A value assumption is an implicit preference for a particular value over another particular value within a specific context. One of Leopold s value assumptions from his writing is that protecting wolves is ethical. He values the environment a great deal; his value assumption connects the strength of preference for his value to his fundamental argument for environmental ethics, as well as redeems him for his past behavior of hunting wolves. 3. Value conflicts exist as the differing values that stem from different frames of reference, implying that values are relative. A value conflict of modern society comes from the drive to continue the process of becoming modern, which typically includes the sacrifice of nature, while maintaining respect and admiration for nature. 4. • 37. The Value Of Goodwill And Goodwill Essay What is goodwill? Based on the information on the internet, goodwill is defined as the excess of purchase price over the fair market value of a company s identifiable assets and liabilities. Moreover, goodwill is reported as a non current asset on the balance sheet. But the U.S companies are not required to amortize the record amount of goodwill since 2001. Because the value of goodwill is highly subjective, the accounting standard requires the goodwill to have impairment test at least once per year in order to determine the amount of goodwill. However, when reporting the goodwill in terms of valuation and impairment, there are some rules that people need to follow under the US GAAP. Moreover, there are also some similarities and differences regarding valuation and impairment of goodwill between US GAAP(Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and IFRS(International Financial Reporting Standards). First of all, under US GAAP on ASC 805, the value of goodwill can be recognized initially by measuring any excess of the fair value of the acquired business over the fair value of the net identifiable assets acquired. According to the ASC 805 30 30 1 from the FASB website, it mentions that The acquirer shall recognize goodwill as of the acquisition date, measured as the excess of (a) over (b): (a) The aggregate of the following: (1) The consideration transferred measured in accordance with this Section, which generally requires acquisition date fair value ...
