Where are we today?
I take online classes simply for the convenience. I have 15 units this semester, work full time and have a 3 year old daughter. Now, I only have to go to school 2 days a week. ---- Kathryn Hashimoto Student response to, “Why take an online course?”
While online classes are just as stimulating as on campus classes, online classes allow me to be in class on my lunch break at work, on the weekends, in any free time I have at home. Since I work full time this is absolutely perfect for me! ---Kershia Maak Student response to, “Why take an online course?”

Editor's Notes

  • #3 Our students are time bound 30% of students work full time56% of students work part time In 2006 survey 70% of students asked for more online classes to fit in with their schedule.
  • #4 While greater % of LAVC complete their courses with passing grades and re-enroll at a greater % than national averages, their 3 year rates of graduation, transfer and certificate completion are abysmal Within 3 years of enrollmentrate of graduation 12% graduation rate5% transfer rate 3% certificate completion
  • #5 We have another problem in terms of how comfortable the faculty felt in embracing new technolgoy. This is an actual quote. Every single faculty member who responded to the survey rated their knowledge on technology based techniques as inadequate.
  • #6 Purpose of grant is 2 fold. Use technology as a tool Use technology as a tool for student success and for student access We got the grant for $2.8 million over 5 years. Academic Component Student Services Component
  • #7 Academic Component - Build DE infrastructure so we can deliver more online and hybrid courses
  • #9 Virtual Valley has taken off Rapidly growing Distance Education Program that has moved out of the introductory stages. 5% of our students are taking online courses Program is making strong contributions to our FTES Anticipate an associates degree delivered through DE by Fall of 2009
  • #11 In fall of 2007 5% of LAVC students were taking an online course
  • #13 Demographic breakout As expected, younger students are taking more online classes. They are what we consider digital natives vs. Digtal immigrants. Under 24 54% 25-34 30% 35-54 15% 55 1%
  • #14 Looks at demographics in terms of student enrollment and ethnicity. Interesting aspect of this comparison is that online students mirror LAVC’s students in general except for an underrepresentation of Hispanics. This is consistent with findings in the literature. Even though you would expect hispanics to be more willing to take DE classes to meet their work and family obligations, they are not.
  • #15 While Traditional number of sections have been rather flat, online sections have increased substantially over the last two years. Traditional 1800 - Ask Mark Online growing - Ask Mark. Note East LA offering 83 sections in fall. We are offering 75
  • #16 While Traditional number of sections have been rather flat, online sections have increased substantially over the last two years. Traditional 1800 - Ask Mark Online growing - Ask Mark. Note East LA offering 83 sections in fall. We are offering 75
  • #17 Dollar impact of DE program in terms of what it generates for the college. Fall is typically our largest semester. De comprised xx% of our FTES. S Summer is typically a smaller semester in terms of enrollment, yet we had a greater share of FTES. This supports the fact that our students want DE classes.
  • #18 Dollar impact of DE program in terms of what it generates for the college. Fall is typically our largest semester. De comprised xx% of our FTES. S Summer is typically a smaller semester in terms of enrollment, yet we had a greater share of FTES. This supports the fact that our students want DE classes.
  • #19 Preliminary data Faculty myth that students don’t finish online courses because they have lots of problems with the technology. Probably due to anecdotal evidence when an instructor has to deal with an overly needy students Actual statistics show that the retention rate of online students is close to the retention rate of traditional students. Due to better training of instructors. Jim will talk about the technical training and the pedagogical training we have implemented.
  • #20 Preliminary Data % of students with A,B, C or credit Room for improvement Student support we have in place that Mark will talk about
  • #100 Self Service just in time activities to provide 24/7 support
  • #139 Just celebrated 08/08/08 which the chinese consider very lucky. We came up with our own lucky forecast. Currently 5% of our students are taking an online class. Project 11% of our students taking an online class in 2011. More than doubles what we have but there is still room for improvement since nationally 20% of students are enrolled in at least one online class.
  • #140 Master Plan is looking at 1.5% increase in credit courses per year. We are projecting 10% increase per year based on variety of courses, number of sections, offering of DE degree and certificates.
  • #142 Schwarzenegger indicated in recent speech 1.3 million across country. 166,000 in California More teen parents as well as single parents don’t have access to an education. DE helps them out Military always upgrading education skills of soldiers. As people get deployed don’t want to drop of out of school. Corporate market can’t afford to train people. HR first budget to go. Always looking for ways to make connection with education. From ESL to Management. Lenny always offers 1 free course to companies for their employees. Continuing education - professional credits like Real Estate, Accounting, Psychology
  • #143 AA Degree through DE. Addition of courses that constitute 50% or more of a program through a mode of distance delivery. West submitted an 40 page report. Took 4 months to compile STEM Funding $4.8 million over 2 years. 19 new DE classes in math, biology, engineering Expand DE coordinator assignment 17 hours a week not enough -- especially 2 weeks before school starts and 2 weeks after it starts Dedicated IT support - portal design and upgrades Expand help Desk - Not just student support but faculty support. 24/7. Possibly outsource it Persistence Study - Want to make sure online students are sticking around and reenrolling
  • #144 Looking forward to the challenges and opportunities of the future
