  8. 8. Aflasafe delivery channels Target Market Delivery channels Reasons 1. Large maize processors and suppliers 2. Suppliers to quality aware buyers • Partner with aggregators on B2B basis • Farmer groups associated with large maize buyers such as aggregators Higher level of awareness on aflatoxins They source maize from organized farmer groups Pressure from clients to supply aflatoxin safe maize 3. Strategy for on- farm consumers ► A to Z sales workforce ► Use of partners for awareness creation ► Use of the govt. extension workers ► A good agrodealer network in all the TZ regions so far 350 Agrodealers ► Farmer groups, AMCOs and farmer based SACCOs ► Media ► Demos combined with aflatoxin testing ► Exhibitions and farmer field days ► Workshops for capacity building
  10. 10. Foreseen Aflasafe commercialization challenges ► Low Public Awareness of Aflatoxin and varying levels from region to region ► Aflatoxin is hard to detect (see, smell, taste) ► Testing of Aflatoxin is expensive and not readily available in Tanzania ► The contamination appears sporadically ► Sorghum availability is inconsistent ► Partnerships for awareness creation ► Investment in testing equipment ► Targeting the whole country because of the sporadic occurrence. ► IITA needs to research on alternative substrates in case of serious challenges with sorghum occur Proposed solutions
  11. 11. Opportunities ► The government of Tanzania identifies aflatoxin as a challenge ► Huge potential demand for Maize and groundnuts ► EAC has set stds in aflatoxin tolerable levels in the region. ► Rising awareness in neighboring countries where Tanzania exports to. Lessons Learnt ► Limited awareness ► Awareness creation top priority ► Partnerships are important ► Government involvement required
  12. 12. ► Business will be driven primarily by the market. The more awareness, the more the market and the faster the business growth. ► Grant injection will be required in order to cater for the initial heavy awareness creation budget. ► The Govt needs to take the lead in aflatoxin policy formulation & enforcement. ► Aflatoxin is everyone`s problem requiring multisectoral approach. Way Forward
