Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is defined as blood loss greater than or equal to 500 ml within 24 hours after birth. The most common cause of PPH is uterine atony, where the uterus fails to contract after delivery. Other causes include retained placenta, genital tract trauma, and uterine inversion. Medical management focuses on treating uterine atony and coagulopathy. Uterine packing can be used to temporarily control bleeding while blood products are administered. If medical treatments are unsuccessful, surgical interventions like compression sutures, artery ligation, and hysterectomy may be required.
