Chitosan is a linear polysaccharide composed of randomly distributed β-(1-4)-linked D-glucosamine and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine units. It is produced commercially by deacetylation of chitin from crustacean exoskeletons. Chitosan has properties including bioadhesiveness, biocompatibility, antimicrobial effects, and the ability to introduce foreign materials into cells making it useful for applications in biomedicine, agriculture, environmental protection, and chemical industries.
