Organization Conflict

1. In the case of Laura and her supervisor Tara, the best conflict resolution style
appropriate to this is compromising. Compromise is a ‘give-and-take’ exchange,
resulting in neither a clear winner nor loser. Compromise can be used when the object,
goal or resource in conflict, can be divided up in some way between the competing
parties. Tara wants Laura to reschedule her day off with the promise to allow her flex
time and leave as soon as the job is accomplished, by accepting this demand by Laura,
a compromise is already reached. In that case, both parties are satisfied and a win- win
satiation as achieved.
2. In the case of the two talented but aggressive teammates can be resolved through
collaborative approach of conflict resolution. The PISA 2015 framework defines CPS
as follows: Collaborative problem solving competency is the capacity of an individual
to effectively engage in a process whereby two or more agents attempt to solve a
problem by sharing the understanding and effort required to come to a solution and
pooling their knowledge, skills and efforts to reach that solution. (Stephen M. Fiore
2017). The essence of this type of collaboration is based on “yes, and” thinking and
building on and valuing each other’s ideas.
Any individual, team or company can take advantage of this approach. I have found
this approach to be most effective for companies facing problems that involve team
members from different departments, backgrounds and personalities. This is also an
approach that is usually unique to the coaching profession. The Team leader will there
use this approach to resolve this conflict between the two aggressive teammates.
3. In the case of the two subgroups, the best conflict resolution approach commendable is
Accommodation. Accommodation involves giving in to the other's wishes or
smoothing the changing waves of a conflict. Accommodation sacrifices one's own goals
for the sake of the other person. Accommodators often use phrases like: "Whatever
you want is fine with me." When one party in a conflict genuinely does not care about
the outcome of the conflict, accommodation may be the right choice for that situation.
However, if accommodation is the only style a person utilizes, he or she is advised to
learn more skills. Since the two groups have expressed their desire to work together,
they are likely to accommodate the views of each other.
4. In the case of Mary Vs Alyssa in the argument, Alyssa will have to use
avoidance. Avoidance is characterized by behaviours that either ignore or refuse to
engage in the conflict. While avoidance is presented by some theorists as a negative
style that shows low concern for both one’s own and the other party's interests, there
are sometimes strategic reasons to avoid conflict. For example, when the relationship
is short-term and the issue is not important or when the situation has a potential to
escalate to violence like in the case of Alyssa and Mary, avoidance may be the prudent
choice. (Baxter, L. A. 1982)
5. In that case, the supervisor Mark should compromise to Mario that day to allow him to
attend to his family issues and allow him to work overtime when he resume work.
Essentially, this will allow Mario and Mark to balance each other's needs by considering
both of their positions, which leads to mutual understanding between them as well as a
solution to the main issue. That way Mario will feel satisfied.

  • 2. 1. In the case of Laura and her supervisor Tara, the best conflict resolution style appropriate to this is compromising. Compromise is a ‘give-and-take’ exchange, resulting in neither a clear winner nor loser. Compromise can be used when the object, goal or resource in conflict, can be divided up in some way between the competing parties. Tara wants Laura to reschedule her day off with the promise to allow her flex time and leave as soon as the job is accomplished, by accepting this demand by Laura, a compromise is already reached. In that case, both parties are satisfied and a win- win satiation as achieved. 2. In the case of the two talented but aggressive teammates can be resolved through collaborative approach of conflict resolution. The PISA 2015 framework defines CPS as follows: Collaborative problem solving competency is the capacity of an individual to effectively engage in a process whereby two or more agents attempt to solve a problem by sharing the understanding and effort required to come to a solution and pooling their knowledge, skills and efforts to reach that solution. (Stephen M. Fiore 2017). The essence of this type of collaboration is based on “yes, and” thinking and building on and valuing each other’s ideas. Any individual, team or company can take advantage of this approach. I have found this approach to be most effective for companies facing problems that involve team members from different departments, backgrounds and personalities. This is also an approach that is usually unique to the coaching profession. The Team leader will there use this approach to resolve this conflict between the two aggressive teammates. 3. In the case of the two subgroups, the best conflict resolution approach commendable is Accommodation. Accommodation involves giving in to the other's wishes or
  • 3. smoothing the changing waves of a conflict. Accommodation sacrifices one's own goals for the sake of the other person. Accommodators often use phrases like: "Whatever you want is fine with me." When one party in a conflict genuinely does not care about the outcome of the conflict, accommodation may be the right choice for that situation. However, if accommodation is the only style a person utilizes, he or she is advised to learn more skills. Since the two groups have expressed their desire to work together, they are likely to accommodate the views of each other. 4. In the case of Mary Vs Alyssa in the argument, Alyssa will have to use avoidance. Avoidance is characterized by behaviours that either ignore or refuse to engage in the conflict. While avoidance is presented by some theorists as a negative style that shows low concern for both one’s own and the other party's interests, there are sometimes strategic reasons to avoid conflict. For example, when the relationship is short-term and the issue is not important or when the situation has a potential to escalate to violence like in the case of Alyssa and Mary, avoidance may be the prudent choice. (Baxter, L. A. 1982) 5. In that case, the supervisor Mark should compromise to Mario that day to allow him to attend to his family issues and allow him to work overtime when he resume work. Essentially, this will allow Mario and Mark to balance each other's needs by considering both of their positions, which leads to mutual understanding between them as well as a solution to the main issue. That way Mario will feel satisfied.
