A polymer is any of a class of natural or synthetic substances composed of very large molecules, called macromolecules, which are multiples of simpler chemical units called monomers. Polymers make up many of the materials in living organisms and are the basis of many minerals and man-made materials.A polymeric structure is often envisaged as an entangled mass of chain molecules. As the Tg values for many commercial polymers are fairly low, one assumes that thermal agitation causes molecules to wriggle at ambient temperatures.
The document provides an introduction to plastics, including their classifications and common types. It discusses thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics. Thermoplastics can be remelted and remolded, while thermosetting plastics solidify permanently after heating. Furthermore, terrazzo is often
locally sourced; most of it is
manufactured in the United
States, whereas much of the
marble and ceramic tile used
in this country is made abroad
and then imported, according
to the National Terrazzo
Mosaic Association. For U.S.
designers and architects, this
gives terrazzo a smaller car-
bon footprint than compara-
tive materials.
Crack Isolation
The material is longevity
also contributes to its green
properties. Epoxy terrazzo can
easily last the life of a building,
virtually eliminating the need
to replace it and create addi-
tional waste. Should it require
restoration, epoxy terrazzo
flooring can be repaired easily
and inexpensively with little
environmental impact.
Terrazzo
Epoxy terrazzo is excellent
for multicolored patterns and
designs because the epoxy
resin matrix can be pigment-
ed, like paint, to achieve an
unlimited spectrum of colors.
The color is permanent, too,
and will last the life of the floor
without fading. And it can
accommodate a wide variety
of richly colored aggregates,
including chips of marble or
granite, recycled glass, mother
of pearl and various synthetic
materials.

Functional polymers containing appro-
priate alkyl halide along the backbone
represent a macroinitiator that enables
synthesis of graft copolymers with a
well-controlled chemical structure
Functional polymers find an increasing
popularity both in academia and in in-
dustry. They are macromolecules with
unique features and applications. The
features of this class of materials most-
ly depend on the presence of chemical
functional groups that vary from those
of the backbone chains, for instance,
polar or ionic functional groups on
hydrocarbon backbones or hydropho-
bic groups on polar polymer chains.
Polymer backbones are selected due to
their properties ranging from mechan-
ical strength and flexibility to hemical
stability and processability. Function-
alization of the bulk polymer results in
chemical heterogeneity, which, in turn,
gives rise to many advantages, namely
improved reactivity, phase separation,
enhanced compatibility, or association.
15. Functional Special
Polymer
Routes toward functional polymer-on-polymer structures
and their properties are described in this chapter. The first
section focuses on the chemical functionality of grafted
polymer structures. Selection of the appropriate chemical
functionality is of significance in the design of surface
properties such as wettability and is crucial if subsequent
covalent immobilization of molecules, ranging from or-
ganic functional moieties to DNA or proteins, is targeted.
Strategies for creating polymer layers containing amines
or carboxylic acids, for example, are highlighted, with
emphasis on polyelectrolyte brushes. In the second part
of this chapter, polymer structures responsive to external
stimuli such as temperature, pH, magnetic fields, light, and
counterion exchange are discussed. Finally, biofunctional
polymer structures with antifouling properties or with em-
bedded or attached biomolecules are presented.
Functional polymers in bioen-
gineering consist of materials
that possess in combination
synthetic components and
biopolymers or moieties
designed as mimics of those
obtained naturally . These
materials include chemically
modified biopolymers.
