This document summarizes a presentation on point data reduction methods for geometric modeling using 3D grids. It outlines a proposed method involving triangulating scanned point data, estimating surface normals, generating initial grids, subdividing grids, and extracting representative points. Examples are shown applying the method to reduce data from two scanned models. The benefits of the 3D grid method over conventional approaches are discussed, such as better preserving detail and shapes for downstream applications like rapid prototyping.
