Cells and Seeds: Basics and Beginnings. Robert Hooke, an English physicist, was understandably excited when , in 1665, he wrote about having used a crude microscope to look at a slice of cork. Hooke was the first person to find that plants were actually constructed of tiny units which he named cells. The latin “cella” means a small room.
