2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.

2. Synopsis
• For my music video. It will be about two good friends who have had a falling
out over a girl.
• The two friends meet a few years later by chance. Looking for clarification
with both having a new perspective on life.
• Throughout the music video, it will show moments of the two friends in the
past to resemble multiple flashbacks and will show the two friends wanting
to rekindle their friendship.
3. Type of Genre
• My music video will be more of a drama type genre, with a few comedic
relief within the flashbacks.
• I was inspired by two different music videos one being Shiro’s Story by
Rapman and the other one being Memory Lane by Bugsy Malone ft.Tom
Grennan.
4.
5. Location
• In my music video I plan to use multiple locations that appeal to the
audience I am targeting. It will mostly be based in a shopping Centre or at
the friends houses. This to signify the youthful audience that I’m trying to
reach and hopefully they’re able to relate.
6. Target Audience
• Gender – In my video there will be both male and female actors so the music
video is able to appeal to everyone. As well it conforms to the specification. I
will also make sure not to make the video heavily male orientated and both
male and female will be able to watch this video.
• Ethnicity- I will make sure the actors/actresses will be of different ethnicities
to attract and be appealing to a wider range of audience.
7. Target Audience
• Age –The age range I’m targeting within my music video is between 16-25 so to make sure I
conform to this I will make sure my actors are young and relatable. Also I will consider most
of my shoots to be in an urban environment.
• Regional Identity-The main regional identity I’m targeting is the London/Essex area this
can be achieved by slang words used by the actors and even the way my actors will be
dressed.
• The Socio-Economic I'm mainly aiming for is the C1-E.This is so it relates to more of the
common man.
8. Target Audience
• In my music video, I will mainly be targeting the Explorer and the Aspirer.
These both target a younger group. The aspirer is more trendy and have a
core motivation for status whereas the explorer is the first to try new brands
and their core motivation is Discovery.
9. Song
• The song I will be using is ’Memory Lane’ by Bugsy Malone ft.Tom Grennan
• ‘You should have somehow realised what you have to do’-This line I wish
you to explore by using this line to trigger the flashbacks.
• ‘Memory lane is like a winding road’-This is part of the hook of the song and
I plan to use this line to present the best moments of the friendship
throughout.
13. About the Song and Artist
• The song featuresTom Grennan crooning the hook. This song was Bugzy
Malone’s first ever studio collaboration. Bugsy Malone got permission from
Noel Gallagher to sample the chorus fromOasis’ hit song “Wonderwall”
• The song was released in Buhsy Malone’s album ‘King of the North’ and was
released in 2017.
14. Lyrics• Yeah
Today is gonna be the day
That they throw it all back to you
And by now
You should have somehow realised what you have to do
The world keeps on turning round
Bridges keep burning down
Nobody can hear you now
No matter how loud you shout
[Verse 1: Bugzy Malone]
Sitting in total silence
Totally lost, no guidance
'Dey don't call no more, nobody can find ya'
Nobody can find the time like they lost their watch
They find it hard to think you went soft
They find an architect that I've promised that I make sure
He puts the building blocks in place
Start rebuilding, we've been broken since children
They keep telling me that we're only human
I don't do no silly excuses
Nobody wins, we're losing
So violent and abusive
It's all battle, scars and bruises
'Cause what really-
[Hook 2:Tom Grennan]
The sun shines down on me, on me, on me
And breaks my ties, you'll see, you'll see, you'll see
That angel's eyes, they bleed
This life, I chose
My open wounds they show that
Memory lane is like a winding road
[Hook 1: Bugzy Malone]
Today was gonna be the day
But they'll never throw it back to you
By now you should've somehow
Realized what you're not to do
I don't believe that anybody
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now
15. Lyrics pt 2
•
[Bridge: Bugzy Malone]
I just want you to know that I love you
It's a cruel world outside but I need you to know that I got you
Such a forgetful place and I don't want them to forget you
Hard times have arrived and I wanna make sure that we get
through
[Verse 2: Bugzy Malone]
I look into your eyes sometimes
All I can see is emptiness, no resemblance, no more fire
Or anything similar
When did the winter get to us
I'll go blind, looking at a light so bright?
But if I can find my way
Then I'll come back for you and I'll make it right
I wanna say something but I don't know how
I gotta keep it moving, I can't turn 'round
How did David make Goliath fall down?
What's the king if the king has lost its crown?
•
[Pre-Hook:Tom Grennan]
But today is our day
We ain't running away
But the night was so long that
Today is the day that we break off our chains?
[Hook 2:Tom Grennan]
When the sun shines down on me, on me, on me
And breaks my ties, you'll see, you'll see, you'll see
That angels die, they bleed, this life I chose
My open wounds they show
That memory lane is like a winding road
Like a winding road
[Outro:Tom Grennan]
Memory lane is like a winding road (oh-h)
Like a winding road
Memory lane is like a winding road (oh-h)
Like a winding road
16. Intertextuality
• I’m planning to include Intertextuality references throughout my music
video. It will be mainly be linked back to friendship and different
relationships throughout different media forms .
• An example of intertextuality that I am going to use within my music video,
is a scene from Shawshank Redemption. This movie heavily symbolises
friendship in the worst of places ,prison.
17.
18. Intertexuality
• Another Intertexuality link I am including is the classic scene fromTitanic with
Jack and Rose. I plan to use this scene in a comedic way and to have the two
friends do this during a flashback .
• There’s another Intertexuality within the lyrics of the song as part of the song is
sampled from Noel Gallagher’s Oasis ‘Wonderwall’
19.
20. Representations
• I’m planning to represent different groups. One of them are the ‘London’
group which is the stereotype surrounding London at this moment. But I plan
to reverse the stereotype and to show people can make it out of bad estates
to achieve something other then violence and gangs.
• Another representation group that I plan to include is the ‘Black’ heritage
group. I plan to include diverse actors and actresses.
• Also I would like to include the upper class representation group. I will show
this group in my music video by using the meeting point of the two friends in
my videos.
21.
22. Theory
• In my music video I will applyTodorov’s Narrative theory.
• Equilibrium- will be the build up until the two friends bump into each other
after many years.
• Disruption- the disruption will occur when the two friends are reminded why
they fell out, this will be represented by a series of flashbacks.
• Realisation- will happen when the two friends realised that they’re older now
and its time to patch up their relationship.
• Restored Order- is when the best moments of their friendship will be played
through flashbacks
• New Equilibrium-The two actors become friends again, which repairs the
damage once done.
23. Theory
• Another theory that I am using is the Semantic code. During the flashbacks
in my music video, I will include little references to symbolise additional
meanings within my video.
• Also, within my music video there is an element of the male gaze. As the
two friends ended their friendship because of a girl.
