Welcome To My
presentation topic on
Pilling
What is pilling
A pill, colloquially known as a bobble, is a small
ball of fibers that forms on a piece of cloth. 'Pill' is
also a verb for the formation of such balls. Pilling
is a surface defect of textiles caused by wear, and is
considered unsightly.
Pilling
 Pilling is formation of little balls of fibers (pills) on
the surface of a fabric which is caused by abrasion in
wear.
 Pilling is the tendency of fiber to come loose from a
fabric surface and form balled particles of fiber.
 The degree of pilling will depend on the type of yarn
or fabric the structure and finish.
Causes of pilling
 Due to wear and abrasion.
 Due to rubbing action of fabric with particular parts of
garments and body.
 Due to migration of fibers from constituent yarn in
fabric.
 Due to heat in case of thermoplastic fiber.
 Due to soft twisted yarn.
 Due to excess short fibers.
Reduction or Minimizing pilling
 By using high twisted yarn.
 By reducing migration of fibers by means of Air Jet
spinning process.
 By increasing inter fiber friction.
 By increasing linear density of the fiber.
 By using high number of threads per unite length.
 By singeing process to reduce yarn hairiness, longer fibers.
Pilling Test
 For this test four specimens each 5inch x 5inch are cut from the fabric.
 A seam allowance of 12mm is marked on the back of each square. In two of the samples the seam is
marked parallel to the warp direction and weft direction.
 The sample are then folded face to face and a seam is sewn on the marked line.
 All four specimens are then placed in one pilling box.
 The usual number of revolution used in
the test 18000 to 36000 which take 5 hrs.
