This document discusses using systems approaches and quantitative modeling to assess interventions in pig value chains in Vietnam. It aims to account for short and long-term impacts across the entire value chain. The paper applies these approaches to analyze two scenarios: applying good agricultural practices on farms, and improving food safety standards at slaughterhouses. The modeling is based on a survey of farmers, processors, retailers, and consumers in two Vietnamese provinces. The results show that the agricultural practices are only beneficial when costs are low, and that food safety improvements increase demand for safe pork if health and income benefits are sufficient for consumers.
