The document discusses photos from a model shoot for a magazine. The author analyzes several photos and evaluates them for different uses:
1) Image one is selected as the best for the cover due to Kyle's pose, expressionless face, and how he fades into the shadows, making for an effective image.
2) A two-shot of Kyle and Kieran is deemed unprofessional due to one model being out of focus and the poor composition, lighting and angles.
3) Another two-shot of Kyle is passed over because too much background is visible and the other model is out of focus, dimly lit and looks amateurish.
4) An image of Kieran playing
2. Best images: Front Cover
In this image I used a close up, I feel Kyle
gets the pose and stare perfectly right for
what I wanted. His head is slightly tilted, and
his face practically expressionless. The
darkness and the way he almost fades into
the shadow is particularly affective. With a
little editing I think this image could be
perfect for my cover.
Here, I considered doing a double act
feature, and therefore I used a two shot.
with both Kieran and Kyle. Both models
seem to get the pose and expression quite
right. However Kieran is slightly out of focus,
the shot itself looks quite unprofessional
compositionally, with the angle,
lighting/shadows and proxemics. I donât
think this image works.
This mid shot/two shot is affective in that Kyle
has the pose and stare right once again,
however I believe the affect is greater
achieved in image one. The lighting doesnât
work nearly as well and too much background
is visible. Along with this Kieran is partially
visible in the background, but is out of focus
and dimly lit, this image again looks
unprofessional.

3. Best images: Contents Page
This is one of my favourite images for the contents page,
Kieran looks very focused on his guitar playing, with the
window projecting a light from behind as a gaze. Which not
only works well aesthetically and compositionally. But also
on a metaphorical level as the window could be seen as a
metaphor for moving onto bigger things. The radiator and
the not so âluxuriousâ backdrop, both adds to this metaphor,
but takes away from the aesthetic of the image in general.
This image, is effective in a different way, it doesnât
necessarily portray the genre as well, probably due to the
lack of the prop/guitar, the image in general doesnât really
have a rock and roll feel to it, however it does in a way add
slight diversity to my magazine. If I use this image, it will
surely be small and with a little editing I think it could really
add to my magazine.

4. Best images: Double page spread
I believe this image is effective as due to the high angle
shot its primary focus is the guitar, giving the effect that
the music is the most important thing to the artist. His
face isnât even in the shot, he looks completely immersed
in his guitar playing. The guitar itself is quite an old
looking guitar, somewhat reminiscent of the fifties, linking
to the genre of rock and roll, both in period and as rock
and roll is primarily guitar based.
This image, I believe is less effective, although it has
many of the same features, as the other image, focus on
guitar playing, no face etc⌠it doesnât seem as effective,
possibly due to the angle (an over the shoulder shot), he
takes up less of the frame, and there is less attention
placed on both him and the guitar. However I feel the light
in the background is a nice touch.

5. Conclusion
In conclusion, I will be using image one for my cover,
as I think it suits the genre perfectly, for all the
reasons talked about previously. For my contents
page I will be using the both of the images talked
about, plus another image of Kyle, and dependent on
whether I I can do another shoot, hopefully some
more additional images. Finally, for my double page
spread I will be using image one, unless I do another
shoot in which case I may have to use another
image, as the main criticism was that Kyleâs face isnât
visible.
