The Phases of the Moon
1
Ch.8 Lesson 5
Phases of
The Moon
• ( Objectives )
• The student be able to :
• 1-Explore and put in order the phases
of the Moon.
• 2-Define the phases of the Moon.
• 3-Understand that the Moon’s orbit
around Earth allows us to see the
Moon phases .
• 4-Understand how Earth and the
Moon are different.
(Vocabulary):

Ch.8 Lesson 5
Phases of
The Moon
How does the Moon’s shape
change?
The Moon is a satellite of Earth
is anything that
orbits another larger object in
space.

Ch.8 Lesson 5
Phases of
The Moon
• The same half of the Moon
always faces Earth.
• the Moon’s other side always
faces away from Earth.
• The Moon like a ball, is a sphere.
• It doesn’t change shape.
(Vocabulary):
Phases
Satellite
Craters

Ch.8 Lesson 5
Phases of
The Moon
• It only appear to change shape
because you see different
amount of its lighted part as it
orbits Earth.
• The position of the Sun and the
Moon make it seems to change
shape.
(Vocabulary):
Phases
Satellite
Craters

Ch.8 Lesson 5
Phases of
The Moon
• As the Moon orbits the Earth
our view of it changes.
• The Moon appears to have
different shapes.
• These changing shapes are called
the Moon phases.
(Vocabulary):
Phases
Satellite
Craters

Ch.8 Lesson 5
Phases of
The Moon
• It takes about 29 days for the
Moon to pass through its all
phases, then phases repeat.
• The 4 main phases are:

How are Earth and the Moon Different?
Moon Earth
1-sphere
2-Rotate
3-Revolve
4-Receive
light
from Sun
1-Day lasts 27 Earth
days.
2-about ¼ size of Earth
3-has less mass
4-has less gravity
5-craters cover most of
Its surface
6-has no water, no air,
no life.
1-Day lasts 24 hours.
2-has few craters.
3-Water is found in
many places.
4-Air is found, so Earth
supports life.
9
Ch.8 Lesson 5
Phases of
The Moon
is a hollow area or
pit in the ground.
• Most craters on
• The moon have
• Formed by volcanoes.
• Some of them caused by chunks
of rocks or metals from space
that crashed into the Moon’s
surface.
• Some craters are very large and
some are quite small.

Craters
Ch.8 Lesson 5
Phases of
The Moon
• Earth has few craters??
• Most objects from space burn
up before they reach Earth.
• Also the air and water on Earth
cause craters to erode.
* If your weight on Earth 66 kg
• Your weight on the Moon only 11
kg ??
• Because the Moon has less mass
and less gravity.

Ch.8 Lesson 5
Phases of
The Moon
Check for understanding:
1-What shape is the Moon why
does it appear to change in shape?
2-Explain the term of “ phases”
and identify 4 main phases.
3-why does the moon appear to
shine?
4-Why does the Moon appear to
change shape?
5-What causes the craters on the
Moon’s surface?
