ABSTRACT
There is a need to find environmentally acceptable alternatives to Ordinary
Portland Cement Concrete (OPCC) due to its high energy demand and carbon
emissions during production. One viable substitute that makes use of waste
materials is geopolymers. Waste products from industry, including GGBS,
RHA, FA, and so forth. In this study we aim to replace OPC with GGBS,
FA,RHA with use of Alkaline activator, to understand the self flowing
characteristics of the self compacting concrete. The study consider the impact
on sustainability, durability and cost-effectiveness, contributing valuable
insights to the field of innovative construction materials.

INTRODUCTION
GEOPOLYMER CONCRETE:
Geopolymer concrete is a type of concrete that is made by reacting aluminate and silicate materials
with a caustic activator, such as fly ash or slag from iron and metal production. It may work well in place regular
ordinary Portland cement (OPC).
What are the geopolymers:
1. Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS)
2. Rice husk ash (RHA)
3. Fly ash (FA)
4. Silica fume (SF)
5. Basalt fiber & etc.

geopolymer concrete
Case studies in
construction materials 15
(2021) e00733
 The use of geopolymer concrete as an alternative to the
OPC concrete would result in about an 80% reduction in
carbon dioxide emission.
 GGBS & SF based geopolymer concrete strength improved
in continuance reaction with sodium silicate.

geopolymer concrete
Materials today : proceedings
59 (2022) 1683-1693
 The mechanical strength of concrete increased by 25% @
12M concentration of NaOH whereas workability was
found to be comparable.
 Inclusion of steel fibers, degrades the fresh properties and
increases the mechanical strength of SCGC.
 The strength of SCGC increases with the rise in curing
temperature till 60⁰c – 70⁰c and reduces when the curing
temperature increased beyond 70⁰c.

construction material
Sustainable environment
research 28 (2018) 412-421
 Mix with 100% FA showed good behaviour at temperature
curing but failed to attain required strength at ambient
temperature curing.
 The high early age compressive strength is achieved for mix
with 100% GGBFS due to the reaction of Cao with water
which generates the heat and eventually accelerates the
geopolymerization.
 The mechanical properties of GGBFS based SCGC improved
with the inclusion of RHA up to 5% RHA replacement at
ambient curing and 15% RHA replacement at temperature
curing.

 As the Sodium Hydroxide molarity increases from 8M to
12M, it was observed decrease in fluidity and flowability of
SCGC mixes, though all mixes meet the requirements of
SCGC as per the EFNARC guidelines.
 The mix with 100% FA failed to achieve the early strength
at ambient temperature.
 At ambient temperature, mix MG3 with 100% GGBFS
developed 41.35 MPa, 2.9MPa, 3.11MPa compressive
strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength
respectively after 28 days of curing.

geopolymer concrete

Performance of self
Compacting geopolymer
concrete containing different
mineral admixture
 The result of the mechanical properties ( compressive, split,
and flexure) had shown significant performance differences
and the higher compressive strength has been obtained for
slag series . So 30% replacement of slag levels could be of
optimum consideration for both flowability as well mechanical
properties
 In this case of fly ash and blast furnance slag filling of the
voids between the large layer particles and increasing
production of secondary hydrates by pozzolonic reaction with
the time resulting from the primary hydration enhances
compressive strength
