2. SOURCES OF INFORMATION
 According to terminology of documentation of
UNESCO, an information source means, “the source
from which an individual gets information to fulfils his
needs.”
 It is true that if any one wishes to advances his
knowledge in a chosen area. he has to invariably look
into the records and experiences left by his
predecessors.in olden days only documents like books
and periodicals constituted the collection of a library. but
the modern library is being redesigned as an information
centre. Naturally the collection is in tune with the
informatiom technology.

3. Types of Information Sources:
(a) Documentary sources
(b) Non-Documentary sources
The documentary sources are sub-divided into three
types:- i. Primary sources
ii.Secondary sources
iii.Tertiary sources.
I.Primary Sources of Information:- The primary sources
are original materials or other words it is first
published records of original research or description
of new application or new intrepretation of old ideas.
A primary source is a document, speech, or other sort
of evidence written, created or otherwise produced
during the time under study.

4. Materials of Primary source:-
i. Scientific journals
ii. Research reports and bulletins
iii. Proceedings of conference or congress
iv. Theses or dissertations
v. Patents and standards.
II. Secondary Sources of Information:-Secondary sources
are sources that are written about primary sources.
Secondary sources analyze, interpret, and discuss
information about the primary source. Secondary
sources include journal articles, books,
encyclopedias, dictionaries, reviews, newspaper
articles, specific essays, etc.

5. Most research papers are based on secondary sources as
they build on the research or studies others have done.
i. Bibliographies and catalogues
ii. Handbooks and manuals
iii. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, glossaries and thesaurus
iv. Directories and yearbooks
v. Atlases, maps and gazetteers
vi. Indexex and abstrstacting journals
vii. Advances and annual reviews
viii. Monographs, textbooks and treatises
ix. Statistical publications
x. Biographies

6. III. Tertiary Sources of Information:- A tertiary
source is an index and/or textual condesation of
primary and secondary sources. Tertiary publications
are guides to the literature of general and special
fields, which discuss both primary and secondary
sources.
o Guide books to literature like,Horticultural
litersature, Biological literature, Econoics literature.
o Giude to Reference sources in IGKV Library.
o Bibliography of Bibliographies
o Directory of Directories
o Bibliography of IGKV Thesis.

7. Uses of Information Sources:-
1. To keep abreast of the latest information in relevant
areas.
2. To avoid duplication of research in the same area.
3. To enable the researcher in getting more information
in his chosen area.
4. To supply necessary answers to specific queries.
5. To offer a fruitful path of information.
