Editor's Notes

  1. Welcome and Thank you for attending this information session to learn about the “Peter J. Cannone Technology and Cultural Learning Academy” in Sandwich, Massachusetts! We are thrilled that you decided to join us today! My name is Karen McGrath and I am the administrative leader.
  2. The Town of Sandwich is a seaside community of 23,000 residents located in the northwest corner of Cape Cod in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. It consists of one high school and four- K-8 Elementary Schools. The student population at the Peter J. Cannone Technology and Cultural Learning Academy is 800 students.
  3. We are a k- 8 public elementary school, whose faculty and staff are committed to preparing students for the 21st century. We realize this doesn’t just mean “preparing students”; This means preparing ourselves. We as teachers and administrators recognize the necessity to be co-constructors of knowledge and learning along with our students. No longer can learning mean, a teacher imparting knowledge upon the students, rather we must engage our students as active participants in the learning process. We plan on doing this through inspiring a cultural awareness using current technologies. This is our mission for the future.
  4. Our schools patron “Peter J. Cannone” worked tirelessly as the superintendent of schools in sandwich for 11 years. His mission: to better the schools in Sandwich- we hope to emulate his hard work and spirit with our Mission and Core Values. We hold at the heart of our philosophy these 4 Core Values. Cooperate and Communicate Everyone will work together in order to provide the best possible experience for students
  5. Work Ethic We will organize and plan in order to meet challenges both independently and cooperatively. We will strive to acquire expected skills and knowledge and use these to think critically and to solve problems
  6. Honesty and Integrity We will understand and demonstrate respect for ourselves, for others, and for all members of our global community.
  7. And finally, Attitude and Effort We recognize that attitude, effort and perseverance are the most important factors in reaching our learning goals.
  8. Read statement: “ Students will use engaging technologies in collaborative, inquiry-based learning environments with teachers who are willing and able to use technology’s power to assist them in transforming knowledge and skills into products, solutions, and new information.” This video explains how preparing our students for the 21st century is different from the way we’ve prepared students in the past. Watch Video As the video points out, its still important to teach the the three R’s, but that alone is no longer enough to prepare students for the future.
  9. At the Peter J. Cannone Technology and Cultural Learning Academy, Teachers: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessment Model Digital-Age Work and Learning Promote and Model Digital Citizenship and Responsibility and Engage in Professional Growth and Leadership Professional Development for all teachers will be current and continuous throughout the year in order to support teachers in these goals.
  10. In order to be successful, it is imperative that we continually professionally develop our teachers- Professional Development opportunities this year will include workshops from International Society for Technology in Education, Mass DOE Professional Development Institutes And MassCue Annual Technology Conference. Courses such as: Click Links Enhancing Reading and Writing Instruction with Visual Learning and Inspiration Software Explore, Engage, Empower: Using GPS and Geocaching in K-12 Classrooms GPS, GoogleEarth, and Digital Images: Making the Connection Digital Comics, Graphic Novels, Sequential Art, and Technology-Enhanced License to Thrill: Using Top Secret Technology Strategies to Learn Podcasting/NewscastingPodcasting for Communication: What Educators Need to Know CSI:ISTE-Forensics for Educators Quick and Easy Computer Activities for Kids Rev Up Your Reading and Writing Classroom with Technology Don ’t Break the Bank: Free Software Options for K - 12 Wiki World: Collaborative Learning through Technology All-You-Can-Eat Buffet Other Professional Development Opportunities from the Mass DOE Professional Development Institute will include: Workshops in the following core areas: Music, Art, History,Social Science, Literacy, Mathematics, Science&Technology, English Language Learners, Special Education All teachers will attend the Massachusetts Computer Using Educators conference “Tackling 21st Century Learning”
  11. Besides needing to be prepared for a digital world, Today’s students learn differently from the way students learned 15 years ago- therefore they feel disconnected from schools that were designed for a different time. We need to use technology to help make connections and make learning relevant for our students. This video is of a teacher of a Kindergarten classroom who have a connection with students who live and learn in Australia- Watch Video As you can imagine from the video, there are endless opportunities for the students to learn from one another. Real, Relevant and unlike the old “pen pals” its instant- These are the kinds of learning activities that go on at the Peter J. Cannone Technology and Cultural Learning Academy.
  12. Our Daily Schedule is as follows: Everyone reads for the first half hour of the day. No assigned reading-Read whatever you want(K-modified 20 min. to start the year) During the regular day hours the schedule will focus on Core Subjects Extended Day Schedule which will focus on Cultural exploration through the arts All students participate the extended day schedule.
  13. Digital Students are “Hypermedia Communicators” They use several means of communication to stay in touch with their peers and to access information about their world. They are multitaskers-They have no problem browsing the internet, while watching t.v., listening to their ipod, and instant messenging with a friend. Digital Students are goal orientated. While multitasking, they pursue multiple goals at the same time. They are ambitious and success oriented.
  14. So how do we challenge these multi-tasking, hypermedia communicators- Simple: Inquiry based Projects Collaborative Technology Assisted Engagement Dialogue Centers Literacy Strategies are infused into all projects and applied across the curriculum Students apply both reading comprehension and process writing strategies as they work on all projects. Real and Relevant problems These learning models help us to challenge all students at different ability levels
  15. We utilize the Mass Curriculum Frameworks and Guiding principals in order to guide our curriculum development- We also use The International technology standards identify several higher-order thinking skills and digital citizenship as critical for students to learn effectively for a lifetime and live productively in our emerging global society. These two principal guiding standards are used in conjunction, not as separate entities. We believe this is crucial in our schools success. Technology is not an “extra” it is a tool to enhance learning. We firmly believe in the integration of technology. We follow all state assessment strategies. We believe in both formative and summative assessment practices.
  16. ISTE’s educational Technology Standards for Students These are the things students should be able to do to learn effectively and live productively in an increasing digital world. Read list Again: We believe the key to student success is making sure Students still be learn all the basic skills such as reading, writing and arithmetic but they will be doing it in conjunction with these 21st century skills using technology as a tool.
  17. A brief word on Expectations, Excellence and Equity: We hold all members of our community to high standards. We expect that all members of our community will hold and challenge one another to high standards. The Physical and Mental Health and safety of all members of our community is of course our number one priority As mentioned before our culture is one of respect for all. We foster this culture using Responsive Classroom Techniques, such as Morning Meeting, rule creation, problem solving collaboration and logical consequences
  18. Technology is not something extra- It’s a tool that helps us to facilitate learning- We must embrace it or we are not serving our students to the best of our abilities.
  19. Simple, Hiring and training. We can’t expect teachers to figure all of this out on their own. We hire teachers who are willing to learn, willing to try a new model, and then we take the responsibility to train them seriously. We mentor one another. We guide one another. We are a professional learning community who work to together to make sure everyone works to carry out our mission. As you saw earlier we provide teachers with current professional development opportunities.
  20. We adhere to all state standards and each child’s individual education plan. We have Specialist trained to implement and help others implement students ieps. We are also trained and stay current on all adaptive technologies. We have come miles and miles with adaptive technologies and feel that the technology helps to level the playing field for our most challenged students.
  21. Simple- We budget for it. Instead of spending lots of money on textbooks, we use a lot of our materials budgets on technology. We also have been awarded several grants including “Apple Distinguished Educators” awards of $40,000. Where there is a will, there is a way. We have looked hard at our budget to trim waste and be sure the money we spend is thoughtful, practical and helps further our mission.
  22. Our belief concerning MCAS is to prepare our students for the future… and the MCAS will take care of itself There was a famous basketball coach, (I forget the coach) but it was the last 2 minutes of a very important game, and after the game ended a news reporter came to the coach and said, “I noticed that the last 2 minutes of the game you never looked up at the scoreboard,-the last 2 minutes-How could you not look up at the scoreboard?” The coach replied, because I was coaching my team-if I was looking up at the scoreboard then I wasn’t doing what I was suppose to be doing and that’s coaching my team. If I do my job right, the scoreboard will take care of itself.
