More than half of antibiotics used in the United States are estimated to be used for livestock growth promotion rather than treatment of disease. Overuse of antibiotics in agriculture threatens human health by promoting the spread of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Countries like Denmark have successfully banned the use of antibiotics for growth promotion in livestock, resulting in decreased antibiotic usage and resistance in animals without negatively impacting production. Addressing antibiotic overuse will require a multi-sectoral public health approach that considers human, animal, and environmental health.
