three groups are ethical, religious, and aesthetic. My argument is that in this situation, being an

I am an outsider looking at the organization as an insider due to commanding one of the battalions
in 4th ABCT. This strength is also a weakness that can lure me into a false sense of comfort in a
time where action is desperately needs. Since my departure the unit has conducted a deployment to
Afghanistan and is in the final stage of the reintegration. My brigadeis suffering from a lack of
mission commitment as a result of several different missions and minimal leadershipinvolvement. In
developing a new path for the 4th ABCT the key is to examine the problem, then develop a new
vision, and finally use the Kotter s 8 Stage Model to anchor lasting improvement to the
organization. This situation presents an opportunity to my command to customize the unit to meet
its challenges in the future. Problems in a unit returning from deployment are nothing new, but the
4th ABCT is going down a dangerous path if the situation is not course corrected. At the heart of
the problem the unit is suffering from a lack of mission commitment as a result of several different
missions and minimal leadership involvement. While deployed my new unit trained for one
mission and then was divided up once in country to carry out several missions to include a Security
Force Advisor Team. Soldiers trained on one set of task then were utilized completely differently.

A couple of years ago, I awakened thinking that day would be like any other, but it wasn t. That
was a day that I will never forget. It was the day my friend came to my house crying to me, lip

manipulate societal norms in order to achieve success, and Edna Pontellier from The Awakening
actively tries to become and independent woman. In the end, I think they both succeed in
becoming independent women and ideal feminists because of how they fight against their
societies. Even though both Edna and Lily are suppressed by their society, they not only use their
knowledge of society to fight against it, but they prove in the end of both novels that they are
truly independent women and can be just as free willed as the men. Both Edna Pontellier and Lily
Bart understand what society expects of them, and they use that knowledge later to manipulate
conventional societal norms to try to become individuals. Albeit, it does not end ideally for them,
but throughout both The Awakening and The House of Mirth Edna and Lily fight the suppressive
nature of their societies. Edna is different from Lily in this sense, however, because Edna
eventually actively rejects the ideal mother woman. When the novel first begins, we get a glimpse
of what Edna was like when she was younger, which continues during her marriage to Mr.

This is what makes Mrs. Ballard s diary so important. Her journal demonstrates how she chose an
occupation that gives her complete authority over her own actions and career choices, which
was rare in the Early Republic Era. Her being a midwife let her dictate the jobs that she did and
did not accept. Martha gets the honor of showing the world that women of her time did all they
could to be as independent as possible. In The Midwife s Tale, Laurel Ulrich explains, She
gardened, sewed, cared for her grandchildren, nursed the sick, laid out the dead, and delivered
babies (276). She was a woman of many talents. Martha lived by a value that she expects the same
respect in return and undertakes full authority over the responsibilities she considers to be her own.
An important quote that gives the newer generation an idea of the common women at this time is
from the March 1804 chapter. Historian Laurel Ulrich quotes, The mixing of governours in a
household, or subordinating or uniting of two masters, or two dames under one roof, doth fall out
most times, to be a matter of much unquietness to all parties (281). This is a quote from 1624, an
early English essay on marriage. This quote is in regards to the clear annoyance Martha journaled
