Domestic Terrorism In America
Terrorism has had a profound affect on the world, as it has inspired fear and despair in the hearts
of millions of people. Specifically in the United States, where in certain circumstances U.S. citizens
will carry out acts of terror to further their own cause. Domestic terrorism has taken roots in many
aspects of society through certain ideological groups, radicalization through media, and by acts of
terror that cause immense civil unrest. The perpetrators of terrorismhave changed over time.
Domestic terrorism has its roots in the United Statesgoing back to the Colonial Era, where some
argue that patriots such as in the Boston Tea Party used terror tactics to spread their message
(Zalman, 2015). Many argue that the acts patriots took were... Show more content on

Since 2001, domestic extremist have killed more people in the U.S. than foreign sources of
Terrorism. In 2015 alone, 52 people were killed by domestic terrorism; the most killed by such
terrorism in a decade (Berman, 2016). This leaves the United States of America no true face to
fight, making it extremely difficult to find the perpetrators of terror. Fighting this form of
terrorism is so challenging that the U.S. Justice Department is considering legal changes to
combat what it sees as a rising threat from domestic anti government extremists, (Harte, 2016).
Over the past two years, 42 people have been charged with plotting attacks on America in the
name of the Islamic state or anti government fervor. All of these individuals will not face a life
sentence, and will be let free in a couple of decades (Harte, 2016). With the little reform that
happens in prison, these people will one day be out of prison, most likely with the same radical
passion. Efforts are being made to make deradicalization facilities rather than let the convicted 42
go back into society with plenty of rage (Harte, 2016). The fight against radicalization has largely
turned towards targeting the communities where they begin. Many

Imagery And Imagery Of Shakespeare s Hamlet
Shakespeare s Hamlet uses imagery as a means to develop the ideas that grow out of the
representation of a thought. Shakespeare uses imagery as vivid or figurative language to represent
objects, actions and ideas. The imagery of disease, poison and decay is used throughout the play
by Shakespeare for a purpose. The descriptions are of disease, poison and decay to help us
understand the bitter relationships between the characters that exist in the play and Hamlets own
cynicism. We see Hamlet s soliloquy when he contemplates suicide. The resentful nature that exists
between Polonius and Hamlet is heightened with the use of imagery. The imagery enhances
Claudius hate of Hamlet. Shakespeare uses imagery in this play to deepen our understanding of the
emotions experienced by Hamlet.
The imagery of decay is used to help us understand the depression Hamlet felt in his first soliloquy
about suicide. O that this too sullied flesh would melt, Thaw, and resolve itself into a dew, Hamlet
is communicating his wishes not to exist in this world anymore. He wants to die and be come part
of the earth. An image of Hamlet s flesh, rotting, combining with nature is produced. At this
moment we can grasp the intensity of Hamlet s true emotions. We can feel his pain and his
yearning for his death. Hamlet continues to say, How weary, stale, fat, and unprofitable/ Seem to
me all the uses of this world! Fie on t, ah, Fie, tis an unweeded garden/That grows seed. Things

One s socioeconomic and educational level is an important factor in the longevity of this aging
population s existence. Greene County is a relatively poor community with only 11.3% of
individuals holding a B.A. or higher degree of education (Stats, 2014). The ability for self pay or
likelihood of one in this age group having private health insurance is decreased. Therefore, the
financial burden for this age group falls back on government agencies in the form of Medicare
for qualifying older adult or the older adult fails to seek medical attention due to the lack of
funding. People 65 and older make nearly twice as many physician office visits per year than
adults 45 to 65. However, an estimated two thirds of older people are unable to understand the
information given to them about their prescription medications. (AMA, 2014) According to the
CDC, by 2030, 71.5 million adults aged 65 years of age or older will be living in the United

The Aztec Of Aztecs And Spanish Conquistadors
The events that occurred between the Aztecs and Spanish Conquistadors have many sides and
opportunities for debate. One of the most debated topics being; Who was more savage and who was
more Civil? Both the Aztecs and Spanish had powerful and thriving empires. These empires
displayed their dominance through their advanced technology and flourishing military. Though it
may seem that the Spanish were more advanced than the Aztecs, the Aztecs and Spanish were
actually quite close to being equal in technological advancements.
The Aztec empire has been said to be the greatest engineers in the Americas and rival the Roman
Empire in technology. The Aztec Empire had luxurious pyramids, temples and a gleaming capital
city called Tenochtitlan, that in its golden years, was said to house over 200,000 250,000 Aztecs.
Tenochtitlan was larger than Rome, London and Madrid put together. On top of it s large
population, the people and streets were very pristine. The Tenochtitlan citizens took daily baths to
ensure they were fully clean. Infact, Tenochtitlan had public baths and lavatories for the citizens.
Tenochtitlan was built on a lake island called Aztlan and over the lake, the Aztecs built fertile,
floating farms called Chinampas .The people who inhabited the Aztlan Island were originally called
the Mexica people. The name Aztec is derived from the name of the Island. However primitive this
empire may seem, the Emperors were quite affluent. They had lavish possessions

from childhood to adulthood (Fischer, 2006). He observed that infants separated from their parents

psychodynamic affiliation. Bowlby s exodus from the traditional psychoanalytic theory at that

Essay Overview of Dementia
Dementia is a syndrome, which is usually of a chronic or progressive nature, which causes
deterioration in cognitive function. It goes beyond what is expected from normal aging. It
causes changes in what you remember, like appointments, or phone numbers. It may cause you
to get lost in a familiar setting like driving to the grocery store. You may not be able to balance
your checkbook or add up your points in a card game. Communication becomes difficult; as you
cannot find the words you want to say. Your personality may change, you may become paranoid,
be crabby or short tempered, and you may say or do inappropriate things or laugh when nothing is
funny. Dementia is one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people...

Even though people with dementia can stay fully conscious, they have loss of short and long
term memory partially or in full. These people may also have difficulty expressing themselves
or making themselves understood. They may not be able to follow patterns or recipes even
though they may have hundreds of times before. They may not realize what time it is or what
season it is. They may even get lost on the way home from the grocery store. The majority of
dementia is not inherited, but it depends a lot on the particular cause of dementia. Some rare
causes of dementia are inherited, like Huntington s disease. This is an autosomal dominant
disease, which means that only one faulty copy of the gene is needed to inherit the disease
(Living with dementia magazine April 2009 n.d). If someone had an inherited disease and lived
long enough, they could pass it on and it wouldn t skip a generation. Dementia affects each
person in a different way, depending on the impact of the disease and the person s personality
before he/she became ill. The signs and symptoms that are linked to dementia can be understood in
three stages. There are the early stages, middle stages, and late stages. The early stages of dementia
are almost always overlooked since the onset is gradual. The symptoms are familiar to us all, like
misplacing items, forgetting appointments not being aware of the time. As dementia reaches the
middle stage, the

The Characteristic Of Decisions In Steinbeck s Of Mice And...
The ability to make decisions and choices is a defining characteristic of humanity. Decisions
define us, and they reveal to the world our values, motivations, and desires. As renowned author
J.K Rowling once wrote, It is our choices... that show what we truly are (Rowling 333). This
concept is one that can be readily observed in history, literature, and society and it is especially
prevalent in Steinbeck s novella, Of Mice and Men. The decisions that individuals make in both
fiction and the real world, can reveal characteristics of themselves that even they do not know. In
Of Mice and Men, the first defining decision that reveals a character s personality is Candy s
decision to forego shooting his dog. In the story, Candy is forced to make a difficult choice: to
either kill his old, seemingly useless dog himself, or to let someone else do it. Ultimately, Candy
succumbs to pressure from his fellow ranchers and he reluctantly lets someone else kill his
beloved companion. When this impetuous decision is dissected, Candy s demeanor, values, and
varying characteristics are revealed. Initially, when the idea of killing Candy s dog is brought up
by Carlson, Candy immediately dismisses it saying, You ain t got no gun... [m]aybe tomorra
(Steinbeck 47). However, when this idea is suggested just one more time, Candy agrees. This entire
interaction shows that Candy is extremely compliant and acquiescent in his demeanor. He shies
away from conflict and he will quickly change his own

The Eureka Hunt Summary
The article, The Eureka Hunt, introduces us with the story of a firefighter,Wag Dodge and his
survival during an out of control fire in the Mann Gulch, in Montana. The fire was spreading faster
and heading toward the direction of the firefighters. Dodge, in a moment of insight, had an escape
plan; he stopped running, igniting the ground in front of him with a match, drenched his hanker
chef with water, and laid down on the smoldering embers, as the fire past him. His quick decision is
a mere example which psychologist and neuroscientists use to determine the insight experience.

In doing so, he conducted experimental word puzzles to see if it could be solved by insight or
by analysis. He teamed up with John Kounios, a neuroscientist at Drexel University, who both
share the same interest in insight. With both their ideas, they combined EEG and fMRI testings
to scan people s brain while they solved the puzzles to see if it can construct a precise map, both
in time and space, of the insight process. The resulting studies, published in 2004 and 2006, found
that people who solved puzzles with insight were using a portion of the cortical areas. According
to Jung Beeman and Kounios, a small fold of tissue on the surface of the right hemisphere, the
anterior superior temporal gyrus (aSTG) becomes active first before insight occurs. Once the brain
is focused on the problem, the cortex needs to relax, in order for the right hemisphere to provide
insight. But as Jung Beeman and Kounios concluded, by trying to force insight can actually prevent
insight; the brain must focus on the task but at the same time it has to be accidental. Earl Miller, a
neuroscientist at M.I.T., spent years studying the prefrontal

The Rise in the Divorce Rate Essay
The topic that I have chosen to do my research on is the rise in the divorce rate. The reason I have
chosen this topic is because I myself have recently been through a divorce. I think everyone by now
has heard that fifty percent of marriages now a days end in divorce. So after going through a
divorce myself I would like to know why that is. Today 59% of the population is married down
from 62% in 1990 and 72% in 1970. One of the first things I looked at was the average length of a
marriage. I found that that average length of first marriages that end in divorcefor males is 7.8 years
and 7.9 for females. I found that interesting since my marriage lasted a little over seven years. A

The next thing I looked at where some of the myths surrounding divorce. I found a good article
by David Popenoe about the top 10 divorce myths. Myth number 1. Because people learn from
their bad experiences, second marriages tend to be more successful than first marriages. The
fact is that although many people who divorce have successful subsequent marriages, the
divorce rate of remarriages is in fact higher than that of first marriages. Myth number 2. Living
together before marriage is a good way to reduce the chances of eventually divorcing. The facts
on that myth are many studies have found that those who live together before marriage have a
considerably higher chance of eventually divorcing. The reasons for this are not well
understood. In part, the type of people who are willing to cohabit May also be those who are
more willing to divorce. There is some evidence that the act of cohabitation itself generates
attitudes in people that are more conducive to divorce, for example the attitude that relationships
are temporary and easily can be ended. Myth number 3. : Divorce may cause problems for many
of the children, who are affected by it, but by and large these problems are not long lasting and the
children recover relatively quickly. The facts: Divorce increases the risk of interpersonal problems
in children. There is evidence, both from small

I am going to write a sequel to the short passage, The Man Who Was Almost A Man, which was

the time where he got in trouble. After buying the pistol, Dave walks around the fields with it,
admiring the gun but too scared and unsure of how to fire it. He is very anxious about firing the
gun. He waits until it s dark and he s sure everyone has already fallen asleep before going home,
and he puts the gun underneath his pillow instead of giving it to his mother as he d promised.
Mrs. Saunders approaches him in the middle of the night and quietly asks for the gun, but Dave
tells her that he stashed it outside and will give it to her in the morning. When he wakes up,
Dave removes the gun and holds it in his hands, realizing that he now has the power to actually
kill someone. He quietly gets out of bed and hides the pistol in his clothes. He then heads out to
the fields where he works, and he accidentally runs into his boss, Mr. Hawkins. Mr. Hawkins
knows this is very suspicious of Dave being out s early and Dave tells him he is just out trying to

The DAC is located on Madison Street in the heart of Detroit. The founders of the DAC went to
Albert Kahn to be the architect. Twenty two bidders nationwide bided on this project. The board
members wanted the project to be all Detroit from start to finish, even if that meant going higher
than the lowest bidder. The contract was awarded to Vinton Company of Detroit for over
$600,000. Over forty subcontractors and supplier companies joined in on the project. Kahn was
a successful architect of the automobile companies of the city of Detroit. His ideas are inspired
from Italian Renaissance palaces in Florence, Italy. They chose Kahn because he had a plan of

the forces of nature in the most extreme environment of the Yukon Trail, Canada. While warning
against traveling alone, the man sets out by himself with only a dog at his side on a long journey
across the pond in a frigid weather to meet his fellow campers. The man is full of hubris. He
believes he can conquer Mother Nature, and this belief ultimately leads him to his tragic demise. In
the beginning of the story, the author mentions that it was a clear day, and yet there seemed an
intangible pall over the face of things, a subtle gloom that made the day dark, and that was due to
the absence of sun (London 157). He tries to emphasize how a cold, merciless, and hostile
environment of the Yukonin subfreezing temperatures. However, this does not intimidate the
man. He is so full of self confidence that he feels that he is ready and fully prepared for the
journey, ignoring the facts that he is a new migrant to the region, and this is his first winter, so he
might not fully accustomed to the climate. The old timer from Sulphur Creek who has been living
there for a long time and obviously has a lot of knowledge and experience with the region, warns
him about how cold it sometimes got in the country (London 162) and no man must travel alone in
the Klondike after fifty below (London 164). However, the man arrogantly

Tam Lin Relationship Analysis
From Blackstock to Nowhere: Relationships and Power Dynamics in Two Retellings of the Ballad
of Tam Lin The Scottish folk ballad Tam Lin is a very popular ballad which has inspired many
contemporary writers and artists to create their own retellings and reinterpretations. Fire and
Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones and Tam Linby Pamela Dean are two of these retellings. In these
novels, Jones and Dean have masterfully brought the events and characters of the traditional ballad
into the modern world. Although both novels have drawn from the same source there are a number
of distinct differences between the two, especially when it comes to the relationship between their
Janet and Tam Lin characters (Polly Whittacker and Tom Lynn in Fire and Hemlock
, and Janet
Carter and Thomas Lane in Tam Lin), and the balance of power between them throughout the
narrative. While Jones novel is very much centered around the idea of Tam Lin being one of the
rare few folk ballads or tales with a female hero and is structured as such to give Polly a position
of power and equality in the relationship by the end, Dean seems to approach her retelling of the
ballad from a different direction, questioning whether Janet really is as empowered by her role as
the hero as it may seem at first. In both novels, the first meeting between the Janet and Tam Lin
characters sets a strong base for their initial relationship, especially regarding the power dynamics
within that relationship. In the ballad of Tam

Word Cult Research Paper
The definition of the word cult has completely reversed from its original meaning. How did the
term become such a widely debated slippery term? It has been a long road from its original
meaning to its current polar opposite, but it has been greatly prodded along by society s treatment
of the term. The common stereotype of cults as secretive member in black cloaks has been long
propagated by various mediums, leading to the contrast between common view and traditional
definition. One of the main offenders in the warping of the word culthas been its use in the media.

has just as unclear parameters as when it is used to delineate dangerous groups. Often what some

Theme Of Friendship In The Killer Angels
The Killer Angels displays many of the important themes that occurred during the Battle of
Gettysburg, some of which including bravery, leadership, and, most of all, friendship. This
theme of friendship is represented in many of the characters of this book, and some of these
friendships were divided by ranks and, in the case of Armistead and Hancock, by countries. But
even with the fighting, true friendship is able to come out of the mess. Two pairs of men that
show this friendship are Chamberlain and Kilrain along with Lee and Longstreet. Chamberlain
and Kilrain are a perfect example of friendship in the war because, even though they were
separated by age and rank, they both looked out for each other and looked for each other s side of

You could compare their friendship to that of comrades in school who would share information
with each other. However, these two argued multiple times in the book, which affected not only
their lives in the book but the lives of many soldiers. They argued because of their many different
view: Longstreet wanted to take a defensive approach while Lee wanted to go on the offensive
and Longstreet wanted to court martial Stuart while Lee did not want to (pg. 189; Would you do
it? Court martial Stuart? Yes, I would. Seriously? Or are you just talking? Longstreet though a
moment. Lee wouldn t. Lee won t. ). While these differing views did help each other to come to
agreements, their arguments, especially the one on the third day about Lee s strategy, do not
really get anywhere because of Lee s stubbornness (pg. 286; General, Longstreet said slowly, it is
my considered opinion that a frontal assault here would be a disaster. Lee turned, frowned, the
dark eyes flared for a moment. ). Even if they argued a lot, that did not ruin their friendship.
Longstreet was not like many of the soldiers who looked at Lee like God on earth; he saw him as
the old man that he really was. With this, Longstreet worried a lot about him because he knew he

Attica Prison Riot and Prison Reform
We live in a society today filled with crime and fear. We are told not to go out after a certain
hour, always move in groups, and even at times advised to carry a weapon on ourselves. There is
only one thing that gives us piece of mind in this new and frightening world we live in: the
American penal system. We are taught when growing up to believe that all of the bad people in
the world are locked up, far out of sight and that we are out of reach of their dangerous grasp.
Furthermore, the murderers and rapists we watch on television, we believe once are caught are to
be forgotten and never worried about again. We wish on them the most horrible fates and to rot in

further voice their opinions. But, as if theses conditions weren t bad enough, we were also going
through a political reform as well as dealing with the end of the Great Society era. Things were
bad both inside and outside prison walls. Prisoners heard about the incredibly horrific conditions
outside of their walls and believed that they should be allowed to do, or at least say something
about it.
Conditions inside the prison were no better. For starters, many of the prisoners were those who
had committed menial crimes. Worse so, many were war heroes, back from Vietnam who couldn
t find a job and thus had to go about other illegal means to stay alive, and thus were thrown in
prison. Attica prison in particular was famous at the time among prisoners for having the most
horrific treatment of their inmates. Guards did whatever they could both legally and illegally to
keep their prisoners in perpetual fear and discomfort. The prisoners were not just treated like
children, but as animals. The one thing prisoners treasure the most is their contact with the outside
world. It keeps them sane and allows them to remain in some type of contact both with their
families as well as with what is going on outside the prison walls. But, guards did whatever

Self Realization
The Impact of Self Realization
It is the losses in life that makes us who we are. Whether it be the loss of someone close to us or
the loss of our innocence, or former beliefs, or maybe the people we thought we were. Those
losses are our first steps into adulthood. After that life gets more complicated. But it s also filled
with promise and possibility of opening our hearts to new beginnings, dreams, experiences, and
places.
The summer before senior year of high school, my family and I took a trip to the city that never

Manhattan is like a battered woman. Damaged, has seen better days, but still strong and beautiful.
This city is filled with artists, musicians, designers, performers, and writers who were distinctly

The Effects Of Social Media On Youth Essay
The Effects of Social Media on the Youth of Today Studies have shown that the average person
now spends more time each day on their phone and computer than they do sleeping according to
Nick McGillivray ( What are the Effects of Social Media on Youth?). Social has become part of
our social society, especially for the many youths. There are positives to being on social media
and also equal amounts of danger that come with using social networking sites, including
Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. These social networking sites also have effects on today s
youth by altering the way they behave, the way they learn, in not only a classroom setting but also
in the real world setting, and the way that they socialize with their peers and others. In general, the
use social networking has many health and developmental benefits for the youth of today. Most
teens have online accounts that they use to strengthen their friendships and stay connected with the
people around them such as, school friends and teachers, groups they may be involved in, and
maybe even family that are far away. Social networking also allows for an outlet to help teens with
mental and moral support that they may lack in reality. This is really important especially for the
youth who don t necessarily have anyone to talk to or be there for them. Although one might argue
that there are hotlines to help depressed youth, sometimes it s not the same as having the support

What Is The Role Of Mongol Rule In Russia
Until the end of the 15th century, the vast territories to the west of the Ural Mountains, what is now
known as the European part of Russia, were far from a single united state. Rather, it was a
patchwork of small principalities ruled by different princes, united in their faith under the Russian
Orthodox Church, but otherwise in fierce competition between themselves. The situation was
complicated further by the Mongol overlords, requiring regular tributes ever since they conquered
most of the Russian principalities back in the first half of the 13th century. On the other side, the
Teutonic Knights and the Swedes, sensing the lack of power and unity from the Russians, tried to
conquer the Russian lands closest to them. Squeezed between two formidable enemies, from East
and West, the Russians had to fight for the very survival of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Symbolism In Big Two Hearted River By Hemingway
Ernest Hemingway became one of the most notorious writers in the 20th century, likely due to
his abnormal style of writing. Hemingway in his writing introduced the new concept of Iceberg
Theory which gives the story a implicit meaning made by the author that should be further
inferred by the reader. In order to achieve this style Hemingway throughout his works used
objects and movements by characters to symbolize emotion, actions and other deeper objects.
Many of Hemingway s symbols reoccur among different stories; one of his most recurring

Carmolex is the world s largest molecular library.
The Carmolex library is virtual drug discovery. Instead of needing large quantities of molecules for

Not only does Carmolex streamline the drug development process, it also expands it. Most drug
discovery efforts only sample a tiny portion of chemical space. Our software and databases make
it possible to virtually design and screen a much larger and more diverse chemical space.
By expanding the chemical space and overcoming the traditional multi step chemical synthesis

Motif Of Chaos Essay
According to the Webster dictionary , a motif is a dominant idea or literary feature. In the days of
mythological writing, it was not uncommon for many cultures to include similar ideas or morals.
These motifs are three of the main motifs that drew my attention: the motif of chaos, the reason for
more than one god, and why humans were put on earth.
Motif #1: An Explanation for Chaos There are many obvious motifs included in all the myths
discussed. One of the main motifs used in multiple myths was the explanation for chaos. Many
cultures believed that the chaos the gods put upon the people was retaliation of the actions. Another
theory is that the gods caused chaos to show their people that there would not always be all good,

For one god to have to manage the world and care for its people would be a massive amount of
responsibility. As a result, many cultures had multiple creators. Inclusion to this motif would be that
these cultures thought that having multiple gods or leaders in charge would have a better outcome.
The cultures that believed in having shared responsibility were the Incas, the Mayans, and the
Maoriall. In the Inca creation myth, Pachacamac created his wife to help him rule the world. In the
Mayan creation myth, Tepeu and Gucumatz shared the responsibility of caring for the earth and its
people. In the Maori creation myth, Te PЕЌ came from Te Kore to help care for the earth.
Motif #3: Why humans were put on earth In most creation myths, humans were created to care
for earth. It is my opinion that so many cultures had humans created to care for the earth so that
earth could function. Humans were created to Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it.
In the Christian Tradition myth, these are the words of God the creator himself. He created man
to care for the earth that He created. Women were made to be man s partner and man was made to
care for the earth or to be a slave for the

Zoroastrianism And Jainism Similarities
The religion I decided to further my knowledge about was, Jainism. In my research, I learned that
Jainism is a religion that values the individual as well as the impact each individual has on people
and the world around them. Their belief system relies on no presence of gods or spirits to intervene
with the souls withing plants, animals, and human alike stating that each being should be treated
with level of compassion exceeding their own self value. Subsequently, their beliefs regarding
death and the afterlife are reliant on how they treated others and living beings; the use of karma in
this religionis used as a personal code of conduct in order to obtain liberation leading to the
achievement of reincarnation. Interestingly, as stated within... Show more content on

One common core belief of both Jainism and Zoroastrianism is the idea of the earth and the
elements being considered beautiful and the work of gods they both find them to be pure
(earth, wind, fire, and air). However, Zoroastrianism emphasizes that the decomposition of these
or of people are the work of evil gods and now have become un pure. Whereas, Jainism views
death as a welcome gateway to the next birth (McCarthy). When it comes down to what each
religion does with the body, they are similar and different in this prospect. Jainism believes that
upon death, a Jain s body is cremated and not buried. However, in the case of stillbirth, the child
is buried (Salgia). This is where it gets kind of dicey with regards to burial, because neither
religion particularly believes that you should bury a body. Instead of burying the corpse,
Zoroastrians traditionally laid it out on a purpose built tower (dokhma or Tower of Silence ) to
be exposed to the sun and eaten by birds of prey such as vultures (BBC). However, like Jainism,
Zoroastrianism will opt for cremation (in preference to burial due to modern intervention) if they
are unable to achieve traditional death rituals in both religions they seem to make sure no aspect
(except perhaps bones) are reserved from the body. When it comes to how each of these religions
think of the afterlife they differ greatly. While Zoroastrianism state that on the fourth day, the soul
and its guardian fravashi ascend to Chinvat, the bridge of judgment (Beyer) essentially following
the basis of ascension to find absolution. Jainism beliefs of the afterlife are more about the eternity
it brings, there is no true afterlife as each soul is reborn based on behaviors of their past life.
Similarly, the religions

Analysis Of Bell Hooks And Frantz Fanon
Both philosophers, bell hooks and Frantz Fanon, address the problem of equality. In Feminism is
for Everybody, hooks defines feminism as a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and
oppression. Hooks begins by stating feminism is for everybody (2000) and that it is an attempt to
end sexism though reform feminism. In Racism and Culture, Fanon investigates whether ending
racism is due to cultural relativity. In the book by Gloria Anzaldua Borderlands/La Frontera, she
describes the personal struggles she faced through her insecurities relative to the society that exists
today. In agreement, Fanon believes racism can be eliminated once the idea of superiority is

Reformist feminism became their route to class mobility... while sexism did not end, they could
maximize their freedom within the existing system (Hooks, 5). It is seen through reform feminists
that women are trying take the role of men in terms of hierarchy by trying to move up in terms of
class. For example, working in the Federal Bureau of Investigation is portrayed such that women
are secretaries and men are the ones leading investigations out in the field especially on television.
Broadcasting this ideology is partially to blame for the existence of sexism. Consequently, reform
feminism is subjected towards gender equality seen as a classification.
Fanon believes that there are three stages to racism and culture. One of these stages include
people having no culture through the justification of slavery. Racism, as we have seen, is only
one element of a vaster whole: that of the systematized oppression of a people (Fanon, 3).
Slavery is a form of ownership where a person known as a slave is controlled and forced to work.
This is a historical example of the oppressed that are taken advantage of and used due to the fact
that they are labeled as property. Racism is something that can be eliminated once the notion that
superiority exists amongst people is rejected.
There are many similarities between Hooks and Fanon in terms of eliminating sexism and
oppression in its entirety. Hooks and Fanon both agree that

Window set (under the art direction of J. Macmillan Johnson and Hal Pereira) is so significant
because it contains the entirety of the movie. The rest of the city is a mere suggestion, hinted at
by cars and pedestrians passing by a narrow strip of alleyway. Therefore, the real analysis of city
life that Rear Window explores is that of the relationship between neighbors. In his essay The
Metropolis and Mental Life, Georg Simmel comments that the city dweller must avoid
overstimulation by practicing reserve among others and that,

How To Write A Forensic Investigation Essay
Abstract Law enforcement agencies have relied on forensic art as one of their investigation
methods for many years. The job of a forensic artist is quite difficult because he or she must
reconstruct an image of an individual based on just hearsay and memory from another individual.
The purpose of this study is to research forensic artists, also known as sketchartists, and their
ability to draw up a suspect through the information provided by a witness. Interviews on two
different forensic artists provide insight of the duties and hardships a law enforcement sketch artist
takes on. The process of how law enforcement sketch artists are able to recreate the faceof another
individual, and how that picture can be a very useful piece of evidence for crime reports will also
be addressed throughout the study. This study is relevant to anthropology because it touches on
how how an individual perceives those around them and forensics itself is also one of the key
topics discussed in biological anthropology.
Statement of the Research Question Sketch artists are capable of reconstructing the faces of suspects
by either the detailed information (or lack of detailed information) given to them by those who
were at the scene of the crime, which is quite a challenging task to do. The overall questions I
want to address and answer are how accurate are the artist s sketches and whether or not TV shows
and or movies accurately depict the everyday life of a forensic artist.

Mental Changes In Macbeth
In the play Macbeth, the main character s mental state due to the prophecy changes over time.
William Shakespeare portrays Macbeth as different figures though the play. And his main changes
are mostly caused by people around him and also himself hesitating. At the beginning the witches
said Fair is foul/and foul is fair (1/1/11), so even the prophecy seems positive to Macbeth,
everything has been established already. One of the main element of Macbeth s downfall is his
mentally weakness.
In Act one scene 3, when Macbeth and Banquo meet the three witches for the first time and knows
the first prophecy about Macbeth being the King, Macbeth was not excited about the fair news:

Here, the audience could clearly realize how much Macbeth changed from the very beginning.
Reputation and interest has made Macbeth become ruthless. He could do anything in order to
achieve his goal. But still he is not as strong as Lady Macbeth, because of his instability, he
cannot bear this change in such a short time. He started to have the same delusion as he had when
Duncan died. When brains were out, the man would die,/ And there an end.But now they rise
again (3/4/95 96). Macbeth is consumed by his fear. When he sees Banquo s ghost, he has already
lost all sense of reason. Such a huge change in such a short time clearly shows the main reason that
causes Macbeth s downfall to the audience, in such a mental condition, he seems like another
person rather than the one who was intentionally to kill Banquo because of his

How Did Margaret Thatcher Influence The World

The Iron Lady
Margret Thatcher. The first female prime minister of Britain, Margaret Thatcher was a stern and
dominant political leader. She has made a huge impact in the history of the world. She believed in
working towards her goals and achieving them accordingly. A popular quote form her is If you
want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman. She was not a feminist.
In fact, as at the time she left office, she laid no foundation for other female politicians. It is
expected that a successful woman is a feminist but in reality and thatcher s case, it isn t so.

Tax 2011 Chapter 10
Chapter 10
Property: Dispositions
SOLUTIONS MANUAL
Discussion Questions:
1. [LO 1] Compare and contrast different ways in which a taxpayer triggers a realization event by
disposing of an asset.
A realization event for tax purposes is created in many ways. Virtually any disposal will result in
a sale or other disposition. These include a sale, trade, gift to charity, disposal to the landfill, or
destruction in a natural disaster. In a sale or trade (exchange), the taxpayer receives something of
value in return for the asset. In contrast, a charitable contribution, disposal, or destruction from a
natural disaster generally results in a loss of any remaining basis in the asset without compensation
(unless reimbursed by insurance). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Every sale or disposition results in a realized gain or loss (unless, of course, the amount realized is
equal to the adjusted basis). Most realized gains or losses become recognized gains or losses and
are included on the taxpayer s tax return and increases (or decreases in the case of a loss) the
taxpayer s taxable income and subsequent tax. However, there are some realized gains or losses
that are excluded from income or deferred to a later time period.
6. [LO 2] What does it mean to characterize a gain or loss? Why is characterizing a gain or loss
important?
Once a gain or loss is recognized, a taxpayer must determine how the recognized gain or loss
affects the taxpayer s tax liability. The character depends on a combination of two factors:
purpose or use of the asset and holding period. The purpose or use of the asset is important
because the law does not treat all assets equally. The general use categories are: (1) trade or
business, (2) for the production of income (rental activities), (3) investment, and (4) personal.
Based on these criteria, we can categorize an asset into one of three groups: (1) ordinary, (2) capital,
or (3) section 1231. Characterizing the gain or loss is important because all gains and losses are not
equal. Ordinary gains and losses are taxed at ordinary income rates, regardless of the holding
period. Capital gains on assets held for more than a year receive preferential rates while capital
gains on assets held for

Currency is unreliable. In some countries the United States dollar is worth more than that countries
currency, while in other countries the U.S. dollar is worth less. The exchange rate fluctuates on a
continuous base which makes the term funny money more realistic each day. The purpose of this
paper is to discuss hard and soft currency, the South African rand, Cuban pesos, and why the
exchange rates fluctuate.

The rand is a parallel currency that was exclusively used for nonresident capital movements during
the 1980s and 1990s. The financial rand was available to foreigners for investment only in South
Africa was formulated by the sale of nonresidents assets in the country (Country Data, 1996). The
two tiered currency system insulated the country s foreign reserves from politically stimulated
capital flight, because all divestment by nonresidents were automatically met by new investment,
and the price of the financial rand varied independently of the commercial rand (Country Data,
1996). Ultimately, South Africa s economic growth depends upon increasing gold profits and
foreign investments.
The Cuban Pesos (CUP) is the official currency in Cuba. The American dollar is not accepted on
government business in Cuba since November 2004. All of the stores that sold goods in
American currency changed to the Cuban Convertible Pesos (CUC). Pesos convertibles cost the
equivalent of $1.18 United States Dollars (USD). In Cuba, currency is exchanged every day, and
it is a known fact that the pesos are unstable. The Cuban Pesos is equivalent to 100 cents
(centavos). The notes can be of the following denominations: 1, 3, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 pesos;
coins can be of 1, 5, and 20 centavos (Cuba Currency, 2005).

Fuku a curse of bad consequences
Fuku generally a curse or a doom of some kind; specifically the Curse and the Doom of the New

is written by Junot Diaz (Diaz 1). If you make a bad choice, you will receive fuku, says Junot Diaz
in the interview on Q TV (YouTube). In the interview with Slate Magazine, Diaz says that the
novel is all about the dangers of dictatorship (Rourke 3). It describes how Oscar s family s three

Then Abelard makes a bad choice again. He once has a chance to send his daughters to Cube to

chooses to believe his Trujillo philosophy that he only had to keep his head down, his mouth
shut, his pockets open, his daughters hidden for another decade or two. By then ... Trujillo
would be dead and the Dominican Republic would be a true democracy (Diaz 227). Apparently,
it turns out that his hope is just a hope in terms of his ending. Nevertheless, there is third
opportunity offered that is he leaves everything and runs away with his mistress. Once again, he
makes a bad choice that he chooses to stay in Dominican Republic. Therefore, all he can do left
is waiting for fuku. Abelard ends up being imprisoned and dying. Because of that, his family
breaks completely. Two of three daughters die in accidents after they are sent to relatives family.
The third daughter Beli is sold to a strange family as a slave. We can easily see the reason that
fuku befalls Abelard is that he makes bad choices again and again.

The Effects Of Russian Culture On Military Operations
The Effects of Russian Culture on Military Operations in That Region
Introduction
Understanding a country s culture as it pertains to military operations is highly important in the
modern era. Dictionary.com defines culture as the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a
particular social, ethnic, or age group . There are many examples throughout history that show the
negative consequences of ignoring or misunderstanding the cultures of other countries. The most
recent example is our long sustained operations in the Middle East. We have operated in the
Middle East for the better part of two and a half decades. Through our own successes and failures,
it is obvious how important cultural awareness can be. The mistakes we have made have created
more animosity towards our military and our country in general. Over the last decade, our
government has worked continuously to understand and teach those lessons to our service
members. Through those efforts, we have been able to win over many of the hearts and minds that
we lost during the early part of the 1990 s and 2000 s. Continuing these practices in the future, with
countries such as Russia, will allow us to overcome many of the mistakes and problems we have
encountered in the past.
This paper is the culmination of my own personal thoughts and in no way reflects any official
views or opinions of the United States government. As you move from topic to topic, I hope you

Bleak House
Bleak House is a novel, written by the English writer Charles Dickens, which was published in a
series of installments between March 1852 and September 1853. The novel explores London s
social problems of that time, such as safety standards in factories and working conditions. As a
result, Bleak House has been regarded as a Condition of England novel, meaning that it undertakes
the countries s key socio political problems and questions. But above all, the author centers his
attention in London s inefficient Court of Chancery; a depiction that works as an epitome of the
city as a whole. The Court s state of paralysis and slowly decay is reflected in the city s

Krook is an illiterate man who owns a store in which he accumulates things. He lives in a world
saturated with archaic objects, as well as the court is saturated with piled up cases and archaic
procedures. So, in this sense, Krook s death can be regarded as a warning of what may happen to
the justice system if its institutions continue in a state of paralysis. Krook s decay and
contamination is also protrayed through his house s description; once again, the places assume
the characteristics of the people who inhabit them. Once in Krook s house, before encountering
his remains, Mr. Gubby and Tony Jobling come across a thick, yellow liquor [...] which is
offensive to the touch and sight and more offensive to the smell. A stagnant, sickening oil with
some natural repulsion in it that makes them both shudder. This liquor What is interesting about
Krook s death is the fact that he imploded, he died as a cause of spontaneous combustion. This
seems, from a scientific point of view, impossible. But if we considered it as a metaphor, we may
agree that Krook s body imploded as a result of its decay, therefore, the same thing could happen to

The Greenhouse Effect And Global Warming
The greenhouse effect and global warming are issues that are talked about by geologists all the
time. The greenhouse effect is a natural process that keeps the earth at temperatures that are
livable. Energy from the sun warms the earth when its heat rays are absorbed by greenhouse
gasses and become trapped in the atmosphere. Some of the most common greenhouse gasses are
water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane. If there were no greenhouse gasses, very few rays
would be absorbed and the earthwould be extremely cold. When too many rays are absorbed, the
earth s atmosphere starts to warm, which leads to global warming. Global warming can lead to
many problems that affect the environment in which we live.
In order to talk about global ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Methane in the atmosphere is generated by biological activity related to rice cultivation, leaks
in domestic and industrial gas lines, and the digestive process of domestic livestock, especially
cattle. An environmental effect of global warming is the fact that higher temperatures will lead
to a change in the water cycle. Some places may experience more rain. Warmer temperatures will
cause a greater amount of evaporation from lakes, rivers, and oceans. In some areas this could
be good, and in others it could be considered bad. In northern regions of the United States, an
increase in the temperature and amount of rain could actually extend the growing season of
crops. This would in turn mean more money for farmers in the northern region. It could also hurt
some farmers. Too much rain is bad for some crops. Certain areas will actually get less rain, which
would lead to more droughts and have a negative impact on crops. Warm and wet weather is
usually a factor that promotes tropical storms. Global warming would lead to tropical storms
appearing with greater frequency. More rain will also force plant life to adjust. Forests and plant life
migrate naturally, but scientists say that global warming would cause them to migrate at a much
faster rate. If the climate changes the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says, some forest
species in North America will shift by as much as 300 miles to the north

Middle School Autobiography
In middle school, I was not popular. I was kind of an outcast. I hated the popular kids my whole
life, yet always aspired to be one. I hung out with the girls who listened to k pop, watched anime,
and loved alternative music more than life. I had popular friends, but they only spoke to me,
when their other friends were not around. I was typically a person who takes humiliation to
heart, took way too many jokes seriously. Most of the time it was because they were black jokes,
which I didn t think were funny. People have told me No you re black. or Why are you here?
Africa misses you! You look like Lil Wayne
. I never did anything about it and people kept doing it.
Everytime someone judged me for being african american, my self esteem took a deep dive.
But 2015, was the year, the most embarrassing thing ever happened, and more than once. It was
May, the last month of 8th grade year, and I was more than ecstatic to get out of what felt like
jail. I went to school wearing my floral shirt, light wash jeans, and black converse. I contentedly
walked out my house, in 70 degree weather. After about 7 minutes, I was on the Signal Ditch Trail
to school. I got to school at 8:15 and the day got off to a great start.
I went into to Mrs. Wohlenberg s class, very nonchalant and irritated. She was awful at teaching,
which was her only job, and she choose favorites. All of her favorites were the popular kids,
therefore I never had a chance. She literally bought them nachos,

The Alchemist Character Analysis
The Alchemist
One of the themes The Alchemist shares is with an article titled ESPN anchor Stuart Scott s rare
cancer Stuart Scott, like Santiago, shows that it is important to follow your dreams even when you
encounter struggles. In the novel, Santiago didn t want to become a priest, like his father wished;
instead his dream was to travel the world. His father gave him three gold coins to buy sheep to
travel with, but when he went to Tangier a man stole Santiago s coins by lying, saying that he was
going to buy him camels to guide him to the pyramids. However, that didn t stop him from
following his dream of wanting to travel. The novel states that, The secret of life is to fall seven
times to get up eight times even after you encounter obstacles in life, it is important to stay
focused on your goals and never give up on your dreams. After Santiago got robbed he found a
job and worked extremely hard for years to save enough money to make the trip to the pyramids.
This novel also reads that, There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the
fear of failure. Never let fear conquer your mind s ability to achieve your dreams as fear is your
dreams worst enemy. Similarly, the article published by CBS news ESPN anchor Stuart Scott s
rare cancer discusses Stuart Scott s life story and his difficult struggles. It reveals that Stuart Scott

Napoleon Bonaparte s Life After The French Revolution
Napoleon Bonaparte was well known for the battles he fought throughout Europe. Born in the
island of Corsica, he rapidly rose military ranks and fought for France on the mainland: Italy.
However, the conquest that solidified his position in Europe was that of France itself. He launched
his coup d Г©tat little time after the French Revolution; in the year 1804. During his control of
France, he implemented various ideas of the Revolution. Napoleon s ambition had much to do
with the fact that despite his family was of the nobility, it was not wealthy. He was born second
of Letizia Romalino Buonaparte s and lawyer Carlo Buonaparte s eight surviving children. As
Corsica was annexed from the city state of Genoa by France, Napoleon adopted a French spelling

Yes. New France was doomed to fail. The issues in New France from 1608 to 1663 divide up
into three categories; Economic issues, Territorial Issues and Political Issues. Economic issues are
mainly based on the fur trade, Territorial Issues are mainly based on the trading posts, colonies
and the land wars between the English and Political Issues are mainly established on the lack of
people in New Francecompared to the English. French presence in North America was marked by
economic exchanges with Aboriginal people, but also by conflicts, as the French attempted to

Even though New France had big territory, they didn t have enough people to fill it up with. The
English population was three times bigger than the French population. This meant that the
English had a bigger, stronger army. The French population was favored by the trading
companies, merchants and the coureurs des bois, they mainly consisted of men and a few
immigrants whereas the English was favored by farmers, religious orders, soldiers, French
government administrators and they had a growing population which was evenly divided between
men and women, immigration being encouraged. Since the church had a lot of power, being
favored by religious was important. After, in 1615, the first French missionaries came to Quebec
in large numbers and they began to convert the Natives into Christianity. Later on in 1634,
Champlain sent Laviolette to set up a post further west. The post was called Trois Riviere. It
became a very important fur trading post. Two more missionaries were sent there to convert
Natives to Christianity. The French government wanted a strong colony, but the post at Quebec

  • 14. Essay Overview of Dementia Dementia is a syndrome, which is usually of a chronic or progressive nature, which causes deterioration in cognitive function. It goes beyond what is expected from normal aging. It causes changes in what you remember, like appointments, or phone numbers. It may cause you to get lost in a familiar setting like driving to the grocery store. You may not be able to balance your checkbook or add up your points in a card game. Communication becomes difficult; as you cannot find the words you want to say. Your personality may change, you may become paranoid, be crabby or short tempered, and you may say or do inappropriate things or laugh when nothing is funny. Dementia is one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though people with dementia can stay fully conscious, they have loss of short and long term memory partially or in full. These people may also have difficulty expressing themselves or making themselves understood. They may not be able to follow patterns or recipes even though they may have hundreds of times before. They may not realize what time it is or what season it is. They may even get lost on the way home from the grocery store. The majority of dementia is not inherited, but it depends a lot on the particular cause of dementia. Some rare causes of dementia are inherited, like Huntington s disease. This is an autosomal dominant disease, which means that only one faulty copy of the gene is needed to inherit the disease (Living with dementia magazine April 2009 n.d). If someone had an inherited disease and lived long enough, they could pass it on and it wouldn t skip a generation. Dementia affects each person in a different way, depending on the impact of the disease and the person s personality before he/she became ill. The signs and symptoms that are linked to dementia can be understood in three stages. There are the early stages, middle stages, and late stages. The early stages of dementia are almost always overlooked since the onset is gradual. The symptoms are familiar to us all, like misplacing items, forgetting appointments not being aware of the time. As dementia reaches the middle stage, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. The Characteristic Of Decisions In Steinbeck s Of Mice And... The ability to make decisions and choices is a defining characteristic of humanity. Decisions define us, and they reveal to the world our values, motivations, and desires. As renowned author J.K Rowling once wrote, It is our choices... that show what we truly are (Rowling 333). This concept is one that can be readily observed in history, literature, and society and it is especially prevalent in Steinbeck s novella, Of Mice and Men. The decisions that individuals make in both fiction and the real world, can reveal characteristics of themselves that even they do not know. In Of Mice and Men, the first defining decision that reveals a character s personality is Candy s decision to forego shooting his dog. In the story, Candy is forced to make a difficult choice: to either kill his old, seemingly useless dog himself, or to let someone else do it. Ultimately, Candy succumbs to pressure from his fellow ranchers and he reluctantly lets someone else kill his beloved companion. When this impetuous decision is dissected, Candy s demeanor, values, and varying characteristics are revealed. Initially, when the idea of killing Candy s dog is brought up by Carlson, Candy immediately dismisses it saying, You ain t got no gun... [m]aybe tomorra (Steinbeck 47). However, when this idea is suggested just one more time, Candy agrees. This entire interaction shows that Candy is extremely compliant and acquiescent in his demeanor. • 16. The Eureka Hunt Summary The article, The Eureka Hunt, introduces us with the story of a firefighter,Wag Dodge and his survival during an out of control fire in the Mann Gulch, in Montana. The fire was spreading faster and heading toward the direction of the firefighters. Dodge, in a moment of insight, had an escape plan; he stopped running, igniting the ground in front of him with a match, drenched his hanker chef with water, and laid down on the smoldering embers, as the fire past him. His quick decision is a mere example which psychologist and neuroscientists use to determine the insight experience. Mark Jung Beeman, a cognitive neuroscientist at Northwestern University, has spent fifteen years trying to figure out what happens inside the brain when people have an insight.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In doing so, he conducted experimental word puzzles to see if it could be solved by insight or by analysis. He teamed up with John Kounios, a neuroscientist at Drexel University, who both share the same interest in insight. With both their ideas, they combined EEG and fMRI testings to scan people s brain while they solved the puzzles to see if it can construct a precise map, both in time and space, of the insight process. The resulting studies, published in 2004 and 2006, found that people who solved puzzles with insight were using a portion of the cortical areas. According to Jung Beeman and Kounios, a small fold of tissue on the surface of the right hemisphere, the anterior superior temporal gyrus (aSTG) becomes active first before insight occurs. Once the brain is focused on the problem, the cortex needs to relax, in order for the right hemisphere to provide insight. But as Jung Beeman and Kounios concluded, by trying to force insight can actually prevent insight; the brain must focus on the task but at the same time it has to be accidental. The reason I have chosen this topic is because I myself have recently been through a divorce. I think everyone by now has heard that fifty percent of marriages now a days end in divorce. So after going through a divorce myself I would like to know why that is. Today 59% of the population is married down from 62% in 1990 and 72% in 1970. One of the first things I looked at was the average length of a marriage. I found that that average length of first marriages that end in divorcefor males is 7.8 years and 7.9 for females. There is some evidence that the act of cohabitation itself generates attitudes in people that are more conducive to divorce, for example the attitude that relationships are temporary and easily can be ended. Character Analysis Of Jack London s To Build A Fire Character Analysis of Jack London s To Build a Fire Jack London s short story, To Build a Fire, is a heart wrenching story of a man s struggle to defy the forces of nature in the most extreme environment of the Yukon Trail, Canada. While warning against traveling alone, the man sets out by himself with only a dog at his side on a long journey across the pond in a frigid weather to meet his fellow campers. The man is full of hubris. He believes he can conquer Mother Nature, and this belief ultimately leads him to his tragic demise. In the beginning of the story, the author mentions that it was a clear day, and yet there seemed an intangible pall over the face of things, a subtle gloom that made the day dark, and that was due to the absence of sun (London 157). He tries to emphasize how a cold, merciless, and hostile environment of the Yukonin subfreezing temperatures. However, this does not intimidate the man. Tam Lin Relationship Analysis From Blackstock to Nowhere: Relationships and Power Dynamics in Two Retellings of the Ballad of Tam Lin The Scottish folk ballad Tam Lin is a very popular ballad which has inspired many contemporary writers and artists to create their own retellings and reinterpretations. Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones and Tam Linby Pamela Dean are two of these retellings. In these novels, Jones and Dean have masterfully brought the events and characters of the traditional ballad into the modern world. Although both novels have drawn from the same source there are a number of distinct differences between the two, especially when it comes to the relationship between their Janet and Tam Lin characters (Polly Whittacker and Tom Lynn in Fire and Hemlock , and Janet Carter and Thomas Lane in Tam Lin), and the balance of power between them throughout the narrative. While Jones novel is very much centered around the idea of Tam Lin being one of the rare few folk ballads or tales with a female hero and is structured as such to give Polly a position of power and equality in the relationship by the end, Dean seems to approach her retelling of the ballad from a different direction, questioning whether Janet really is as empowered by her role as the hero as it may seem at first. In both novels, the first meeting between the Janet and Tam Lin characters sets a strong base for their initial relationship, especially regarding the power dynamics within that relationship. • 34. Zoroastrianism And Jainism Similarities The religion I decided to further my knowledge about was, Jainism. In my research, I learned that Jainism is a religion that values the individual as well as the impact each individual has on people and the world around them. Their belief system relies on no presence of gods or spirits to intervene with the souls withing plants, animals, and human alike stating that each being should be treated with level of compassion exceeding their own self value. Subsequently, their beliefs regarding death and the afterlife are reliant on how they treated others and living beings; the use of karma in this religionis used as a personal code of conduct in order to obtain liberation leading to the achievement of reincarnation. One common core belief of both Jainism and Zoroastrianism is the idea of the earth and the elements being considered beautiful and the work of gods they both find them to be pure (earth, wind, fire, and air). However, Zoroastrianism emphasizes that the decomposition of these or of people are the work of evil gods and now have become un pure. Whereas, Jainism views death as a welcome gateway to the next birth (McCarthy). When it comes down to what each religion does with the body, they are similar and different in this prospect. Jainism believes that upon death, a Jain s body is cremated and not buried. However, in the case of stillbirth, the child is buried (Salgia). This is where it gets kind of dicey with regards to burial, because neither religion particularly believes that you should bury a body. Instead of burying the corpse, Zoroastrians traditionally laid it out on a purpose built tower (dokhma or Tower of Silence ) to be exposed to the sun and eaten by birds of prey such as vultures (BBC). However, like Jainism, Zoroastrianism will opt for cremation (in preference to burial due to modern intervention) if they are unable to achieve traditional death rituals in both religions they seem to make sure no aspect (except perhaps bones) are reserved from the body. When it comes to how each of these religions think of the afterlife they differ greatly. While Zoroastrianism state that on the fourth day, the soul and its guardian fravashi ascend to Chinvat, the bridge of judgment (Beyer) essentially following the basis of ascension to find absolution. Jainism beliefs of the afterlife are more about the eternity it brings, there is no true afterlife as each soul is reborn based on behaviors of their past life. Similarly, the religions ... • 39. Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window Like many of his films, Alfred Hitchcock s Rear Window (1954) is an intense study in the sometimes jarring idiosyncrasies of its main character, L.B. Jeffries is an observer by nature, a professional photographer confined to his apartment by an injury, with only insurance company nurse Stella (Thelma Ritter) and his girlfriend, Lisa Fremont (Grace Kelly) for company. This limitation impels him to begin observing his neighbors, and he witnesses events that lead him to believe Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr) has murdered his wide. Hitchcock s notoriously elaborate Rear Window set (under the art direction of J. Macmillan Johnson and Hal Pereira) is so significant because it contains the entirety of the movie. The job of a forensic artist is quite difficult because he or she must reconstruct an image of an individual based on just hearsay and memory from another individual. The purpose of this study is to research forensic artists, also known as sketchartists, and their ability to draw up a suspect through the information provided by a witness. Interviews on two different forensic artists provide insight of the duties and hardships a law enforcement sketch artist takes on. The process of how law enforcement sketch artists are able to recreate the faceof another individual, and how that picture can be a very useful piece of evidence for crime reports will also be addressed throughout the study. This study is relevant to anthropology because it touches on how how an individual perceives those around them and forensics itself is also one of the key topics discussed in biological anthropology. Statement of the Research Question Sketch artists are capable of reconstructing the faces of suspects by either the detailed information (or lack of detailed information) given to them by those who were at the scene of the crime, which is quite a challenging task to do. [LO 1] Compare and contrast different ways in which a taxpayer triggers a realization event by disposing of an asset. A realization event for tax purposes is created in many ways. Virtually any disposal will result in a sale or other disposition. These include a sale, trade, gift to charity, disposal to the landfill, or destruction in a natural disaster. In a sale or trade (exchange), the taxpayer receives something of value in return for the asset. Most realized gains or losses become recognized gains or losses and are included on the taxpayer s tax return and increases (or decreases in the case of a loss) the taxpayer s taxable income and subsequent tax. However, there are some realized gains or losses that are excluded from income or deferred to a later time period. 6. [LO 2] What does it mean to characterize a gain or loss? Why is characterizing a gain or loss important? Once a gain or loss is recognized, a taxpayer must determine how the recognized gain or loss affects the taxpayer s tax liability. The character depends on a combination of two factors: purpose or use of the asset and holding period. The purpose or use of the asset is important because the law does not treat all assets equally. The general use categories are: (1) trade or business, (2) for the production of income (rental activities), (3) investment, and (4) personal. Based on these criteria, we can categorize an asset into one of three groups: (1) ordinary, (2) capital, or (3) section 1231. Characterizing the gain or loss is important because all gains and losses are not equal. Ordinary gains and losses are taxed at ordinary income rates, regardless of the holding period. There are many examples throughout history that show the negative consequences of ignoring or misunderstanding the cultures of other countries. The most recent example is our long sustained operations in the Middle East. We have operated in the Middle East for the better part of two and a half decades.
