Personal statement
I like to go to university because it will improve my media skills and let me achieve my goals of
becoming a cinematographer.
In school I studied Creative Media which laid the foundation for skills useful in the media
industry such as the use of the Adobe Creative suite and post-production and planning
techniques. My current study has allowed me to develop these skills further, studying an
Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production and Technology. This has given me the
opportunity to improve the skills I learned in school and learn new ones including audio and
video editing. I have experience using Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro and Audition. In my first
year I produced a music video project, a video games animation project, an audio/podcast
project and a horror short film. My current project is a documentary of the evolution of first-
person shooter games and how they have changes over the years. I am also completing an
extended essay on Bong Joon-ho and the themes he uses in his films.
My Creative Media study has helped me prepare for university because it has allowed to learn
and practice my filmmaking techniques. This course has also allowed me make my first short
film, which was a good learning experience in film making. I learned about of the different roles
it takes to create a film, developing a story, casting and location scouting. I directed and
operated the camera and produced the final edit. I also got a chance to edit sound effects, pick
the music, experiment with transitions and make the props.
In the future I would like to be a cinematographer and university will help achieve my goal
because it will help me improve my skills with camera operating and understanding the film
industry. One of my hobbies is photography, taking pictures of landscapes allowing me to have
more familiarity with a DSLR, composition and employing a variety of shot types. I also like to
go to the cinema and watch new films and see cinematography in action and learn from the
films I see.
I want to go to university because it will help me achieve my goal of becoming a
cinematographer and I am a good candidate because I already have a background in media.
University will allow me to improve my skills and give me the knowledge to achieve my goal.
