3. Argumentative Essay On Terrorism
In a new book written by Tony Blair s former chief of staff and chief negotiator in Northern Ireland,
Jonathan Powell, the author of Talking to Terrorists states there is no conflict in the world that cannot
be solved (p. 35). In this book, Powell draws on his wider experiences of conflict resolution to argue
that terrorism nearly always ends in negotiation, and that we waste much blood and treasure in failing
to recognize the need to talk to terrorists at a much earlier stage. Additionally, the former chief of staff
states the problem is not talking to terrorists, it is giving in to them (p. 37), and acknowledges that
there is a time to negotiate, and that time is often when a state of mutually hurting stalemate (p. 42)
has been achieved. Yet, he contends, that we waste much time in regarding terrorists as irreconcilable
and beyond the pale before we belatedly decide to talk.
The argument against negotiation with terrorist hostage takers is simple: it rewards terrorist behavior,
undermines the legitimacy of non violent political actors, and nullifies efforts to police terrorism
(Faure 2003; Neumann 2007). Because hostage taking acts under terror, hostage takers will challenge
legal authorities weakening and discrediting it (Faure, 2003). Governments usually prefer an
alternative, like combat, because it requires no concessions, grants no legitimacy, and is consistent
with the norm of punishing illegal violence (Pruitt 2007, p. 374).
Indeed, when a terrorist group does not receive wide support or is not tied to an ethnic/nationalist
constituency they are much less likely to survive policing and military operations. However, for those
groups that do experience support, the group can be hidden, resupplied, given moral justification, and
the population may contribute to the active members. Curfews, checkpoints, harsh policing efforts,
and collateral damage contribute toward alienating the population away from the suspect government.
Discontented people, ranging from inconvenienced to maimed, strengthen sympathy and support for
insurgent/terrorist groups who are viewed increasingly justified or morally right. In other words,
police and military options can easily create more support for such groups,

feel sympathy for the whales and anger toward SeaWorld cruelty and denial of culpability.
Cowperthawaite makes choices of visual image, language, sound and structure achieve her

She employs an effective range of visual techniques to create compassion for the miserable creatures.
Contrasting real footage of captive whale with bent fin; with wild whale s perpendicular fin. It allows
the audience to question the differences and makes us realise that SeaWorld is doing something
severely wrong that causes physical damage. This makes the audiences feel outraged by its treatment
as it is unfair, inhuman and cruel; furthermore, audiences are invited to feel compassion for the
unfortunate creature because they could not defend themselves.
Another powerful image that Cowperthwaite used to demonstrate vicious act on whale is when a close

5. Worldview In The Bhagavad Git A Reflection
The Significance of Worldview in The Bhagavad Gita : A Reflection
One s worldview is immensely influential in every aspect of a person s life. In The Bhagavad Gita ,
the importance of having a strong viewpoint is displayed through the actions of Arjuna and Krishna.
This epic is a great example of how one s worldview impacts one s actions and decisions.
Additionally, Arjuna discovers how trying it can be to keep hold of his outlook on life when faced
with difficult situations. The Gita is an accurate illustration of how one s worldview persuades the
actions and decision making of a person because of Arjuna s worldview, the theme of karma and
dharma, and how one s world view effects every aspect of a person s life.
Arjuna is a unique character because of the worldview he holds. Hindus in The Bhagavad Gita hold
the value of life slightly lower than most because they have the security of reincarnation to rely on.
However, Arjuna is different than many Hindus because he values life to a higher degree than others.
In lines 28 30, Arjuna s value of human life is accurately displayed. Krishna, I see my kinsmen
gathered here, wanting war. My limbs sink, my mouth trembles, the hair bristles on my flesh. The
magic bow slips from my hand, my skin burns, I cannot stand still, my mind reels (Miller, 2004).
Arjuna being struck with grief while watching his family members about to lose their lives
exemplifies how his worldview is filled with empathy. Krishna, encouraging Arjuna to fight in the war
and not to worry about the lives of his family, sparked the conversation about reincarnation. Krishna
did not find death enough of a reason to cease fighting. There was no fear of death for most Hindus
because their soul would simply be placed in a new life, possibly a better one. That is displayed in
teaching two line 37 when Lord Krishna states: If you are killed, you win heaven; if you triumph, you
enjoy the earth; therefore Arjuna, stand up and resolve to fight the battle! (Miller, 2004). Krishna s
viewpoint did not portray what Arjuna believed clearly because Arjuna had empathy for human life,
whereas Krishna did not fret over a lost life. Ultimately, Arjuna s view on life encouraged him to make
the decision to drop

Love can not hide behind a mask forever in the end truth will prevail. In the play Twelfth Night

love in various romantic relationships. There are many instances where characters where used
disguises were used to create plot development. In Shakespeare play trickery was used to create plot

Shakespeare uses the act of disguise to create plot development in Twelfth Night.
In Twelfth Night, mistaken identity was used several times to create plot development. Olivia calls a
priest to marry Sebastian (He is Viola brother who was thought to be dead in a ship wrecked and
returns later to meet Olivia), but she thinks is Cesario and this is important to the plot because that is
when the truth starts coming out. Olivia says, O welcome father! / Father, I charge thee by thy
reverence / Here to unfold though lately we intended / To keep in darkness what occasion now /
Reveals before tis ripe what thou dost know / Hath newly pass d between this youth and me
(Shakespeare 5.1.146 150). Here, Olivia asks the priest to affirm her marriage person she believes she
married. She has married Sebastian but however supposes she marry Cesario . This is important to the
plot because this when Olivia gets married to Sebastian and Olivia thinks she has found her true love
Cesario and creates room for the mystery in the play to be answered. In addition to that, Viola says
that she can not love Olivia because of she is not she think he is. Viola says, By innocence I swear,
and by my youth, / I have one heart, one bosom, and one truth, / And that no woman has; nor never
none / Shall mistress be of it, save I alone (Shakespeare 3.1.153 156). Cesario(Viola) statement to

7. How Did Christopher Columbus Discovered America
The one thing we expect is for teachers to give us an education, that is true, but then why is,
Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, one of the most famously false concepts known
to Americans? Leif Erikson was the one that discovered America in the times around 100 E.D. He was
on his way to Greenland to spread christianity commanded by the Norwegian King, when he got off
course, and landed on a different location, which he called Vinland where he stayed for 6 months. He
describes these people who were very mean, and he didn t get along with at all, this is why he did not

These people are the reason when he left, he never returned to America, and told people it was a place
people did not want to go. This is one of the big reason we do not say that he is the one that
discovered America, because he did not want his people to leave with these people. Unlike Columbus
though, he did not just want to wipe out a whole population of people. No one knows exactly where he
landed, but if not in America it was on the North American continent. This is because of how close it
was to Greenland that they know that coming from the direction of Norway. The way he describes
where he came from, and how the weather is pretty much describes completely how America was at
the time he found it. These reasons make Leif Erikson a very strong candidate for the competition, of
who discovered America. There are a lot of people in the running for who discovered America that
philosophers are looking at, but Erikson seems to have the most proof. Christopher Columbus is the
one that takes the winning trophy for discovering America, even though if you do any research you
can see that he is not, but that is alright. Leif Erikson might not be the reason the reason we call this

10. China And Indi The World s Fastest Developing Economies...
China and India are two of the world s fastest developing economies and most populous nations on the
earth. The question is whether Chindia is a friend or a threat to the United States. Together these
nations have attributed to prosperity, but are it beneficial or harming to others?
Chindia can pose many threats to surrounding nations and competitors. China is taking dominance as
becoming the world exporter. With all of their products they are able to offer lower prices and beating
out many other industries. India is able to produce products at cheaper costs and provide cheap labor.
Their textile industry is a prime example. Many of the products needed for their textile industry are
produced in their own country so little is imported. They are able to produce products faster because
the materials are local and there is no need to wait for imports. The products are produce cheaper
because of cheap labor, and there is no need for storage costs because very few goods are imported.
When it comes to producing goods cheaper, offering lower prices to the consumers, and becoming a
world exporter, Chindia is the leader.
Together China and India attributed to prosperity and there are mutual economic benefits. Both
countries have formed stronger economic bonds. They have openly cooperated with one another in
multi lateral trade negotiations. As emerging economies continue to grow, there may be a further

11. What Is The Criticism Of Fairy Tales
2. Literature review
2.1 Introduction
In modern literary criticism, fairy tales are not only considered as the stories for children to learn
morality or to explore the world of fantasy, but also a type of serious literary text open to be
interpreted from different perspectives. Among all modern literary criticism, spatial theories lead
critics to understand the relationships among nature, individuals and society through a multi
dimensional perspective. Therefore, to conduct a spatial analysis of Oscar Wilde s fairy tales, this
section will first introduce an overview of Oscar Wilde and his works except for fairy tales, and
previous studies on his fairy tales from different literary perspectives, such as psychoanalysis, gender
analysis and ascetic analysis. Second, this section will introduce previous studies on spatial theories
employed in this thesis.

Linguistic scholars tend to conduct functional and pragmatic studies to interpret Wilde s fairy tales.
They find that the characters and story plot can be revealed through transitivity processes, the mood
and modality system and the thematic structure. Also, there are scholars employing cooperative
principle to analyze the dialogues in Wilde s stories and find that the distribution of the turns and turn
taking strategies can be used to explain Wilde s characterization processes (Cai, 2012, p. 79). In
addition, linguists also analyze the diction in Wilde s stories based on corpus. For example, a scholar
studies Wilde s nine fairy tales by analyzing the type, degree and metaphors of the color words written
by Wilde, and conclude how the color related words contribute to the aestheticism of Wilde s fairy
tales (Xu, 2009, p.

12. The Theory Of Language For Children With Language...
Speech language pathology is a constantly evolving field. In truth, assessment strategies and therapies
are constantly being improved because of the influences of Swiss biologist Jean Piaget (1896 1980)
and Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky (1896 1934), who developed theories of cognitive
development among children. While these theories are similar in some ways, they also have key
differences, such as the fact that Piaget thought children developed through stages, whereas Vygotsky
stressed a more continuous and social process. Piaget s key findings in the sensorimotor stage of a
child s development and the fact that children are active learners are highly applicable in an
occupation such as speech language pathology. The same is true about Vygotsky s ideas of scaffolding,
social interaction, and the zone of proximal development. These beliefs of Piaget and Vygotsky are
essential to the understanding and application of speech language pathologists in their language
evaluations and in developing treatment plans for children with language impairments and disorders.
As discussed in the online lectures, Jean Piaget was a constructivist who believed that children
developed through discontinuous stages. Each stage is qualitatively different, indicating that children
think a specific way across each stage. Piaget s findings in the sensorimotor period, which occurs from
birth until the first two years of life, are especially important to speech language pathologists because

new copyist and the challenges he faced with his new hire. Initially, the new hire, Bartleby, was
extremely driven and very efficient. He had a great work ethic, and had an extraordinary output of
writing for the head lawyer. On the third day Bartleby stunned his boss by preferring not to comply
with his boss s request. Bartleby s refusal to comply was at first directed at anything outside of his
copyist responsibilities, but gradually shifted toward refusing to do anything including his
responsibilities as a copyist. Upon further analysis into Bartleby s descent from a productive scrivener,
to utterly useless in the office. I have found a connection between the people that isolate others
because of differences, and the people that choose to stray away from normal behavior . This impacts
the isolated person, people are negatively impacted when they live in isolation and have little personal
and emotional connection with others. Without any emotional connection or contact with others,
humans lose their purpose in life, or become useless like in Bartleby in the office. Refusing to do any
work did not deter Bartleby from the office. In fact, he used the office for everything in his life such as
sleep, shaving, eating and spending all of his time. Bartleby lived in the office in complete isolation
from anyone else in the world besides his coworkers. With seemingly no

A Markup Language or ML can be defined as the programming language that is used during web
design or development to create or build a website. (Kyrnin, J. 2 December 2011, What are Markup
Languages?). In the INFO101 course here at Victoria University of Wellington we are required to
familiarise ourselves with two specific markup languages: Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) and
Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). (School of Information Management, VUW, March 2014, Part One
Introduction to HTML and Basic Formatting). It is also important to note that there are many different
variations of markup languages in operation. Additional ones worth mention include: Extensible
Markup Language (XML), Standard Generalised Markup Language (SGML) and Extensible Hyper
Text Markup Language (XHTML). (Kyrnin, J. 2 December 2011, What are Markup Languages?). I
will focus primarily on HTML, as it is the central focus of our first workshop assignment. In a
nutshell, a markup language annotates text so as to allow the computer to manipulate that text.
(Kyrnin, J. 2 December 2011, What are Markup Languages?). This process is achieved via the use of
sets of tags or elements (which are essentially distinct arrangements of characters). Tags can be
implanted in digital text to provide supplementary information about the text in order to facilitate
automated processing of it; this may include formatting and editing for display or even printing. (The

Teaching will be very untraditional and flexible during the unit on energy. The students all have
multiple disabilities and are in a self contained setting most of the day. These disabilities impact all
three students academics and behaviors. Lesson planning for this unit was and will continue to be
strategic and complicated. In order for students to grasp each concept, the concept must be broken
down into smaller concepts. Each lesson will have to be well paced, where each lesson does not go too
fast and cause students to be overwhelmed and stressed or to slow and cause boredom or irritation.
The lessons will include a few accommodations that include many visuals and graphics and the
teacher candidate will sometimes write for the students for the writing assignments. According to
student data from the pre assessment, one student is quite knowledgeable in some of the concepts
related to energy. The teacher had to take this in account when planning to ensure the student stays
engaged and does not become bored. Loss of engagement can easily and quickly turn in to
misbehaviors and escalations. To further enrich this student and the others when they do grasp a
concept easily, the teacher candidate planned enrichment activities that went more in depth or fostered
critical thinking that students could complete after they have completed their assignments that were
given first. The unit will be taught over a period of 2 3 weeks. Depending on students engagement

In The Road by Cormac McCarthy the father and the son overcomes nature s obstacles by dealing
with cannibals. The father and the son face many dangers and cannibals are one of the biggest.

had happened. What is it? He said. What is it? The boy shook his head. Oh Papa, he said. He turned
and looked again. What the boy had seen was a charred human infant, headless and gutted and
blackening on the spit, (198). McCarthy depicted the absolutely worst social breakdown. The weakest

general, the legislation requires that tendency and coincidence evidence must have significant

relationships. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, advocacy is an important aspect of social
work. Social workers advocate or raise awareness with and on behalf of their clients and the social

the new beginnings of Romanticism. His greatest breakthroughs in composition came in his

Although, Hudson s whereabouts before 1607 are unknown, historians can still analysis the life events
during the known time of Hudson existence. Between 1607 and the year Hudson died, 1611, Bumsted
identifies three major event. The first of these events occurred in 1608 when Quebec gained the
resident buildings by Samuel de Champlin. Champlin established a new trading post on the St.
Lawrence and during the first year of building the new habitations, it went under attack. Fortunately,
the post lasted and in the progress, Champlin associated with the First Nations; however, this led the
French into violence against the Iroquois. During the same year, the outline of the arrangement to
colonize New France started. Second, in Newfoundland, the first English incomers settled in
Newfoundland in 1610. The arrival of the Europeans impacted the First Nations people greatly. The
impact that the diseases, such as measles, smallpox, typus, and typiod, altered the lives of the First
Nations people; Before the Europeans brought these disease to the continent of what is now Canada,
the First Nations people were not immune to them and it caused tremendous damage to their
communities. And finally, Frobisher s voyage to the Northwest Passage inspired the great explorer,
Henry Hudson. Within Bumsted, it mentions that Hudson was hired to explore the passage to Asia and
in the progress he ended entering the Hudson Bay. Bumsted also mentions that the exploration that
Hudson sailed was exceptional and it his search was a best known voyage In comparison to Bumsted,
Henry Hudson s biography references that he missed no prospect of landmarks on Quebec and the
Diggs Island into the Hudson Bay itself. The biography mentions that Hudson succeeded in setting the
further north record on his voyage, but the search for the Northeast Passage was not successful.

34. Japanese American Relocation Summary
References Ruth B. Vickers, Japanese American Relocation, X (Summer 1951) n.p. Summary The
Japanese American Relocation, authored by Dori Felice Moss, details the experiences within the
internment camps of Rohwer and Jerome in Arkansas. Japanese Americans had to leave their homes,
friends, personal belongings, and family to live in squalor, crowded conditions. Recollections were
accounted from those who were sent to an internment camp in which many stated that being labeled as
disloyal citizens was the most difficult thing during the relocation process. However, throughout the
process, those relocated were able to quickly adjust to life within the camp and attempt to maintain a
normal life. There was religious, editorial freedom, education, and visitors in camp which helped to
diminish the harsh internment barriers. The article describes similar themes that occurred during the
relocation of Indian tribes in which they were sent to reservations where they would then be more
easily controlled and monitored by the government. The Indians, as well as the Japanese Americans,
were perceived as cultural threats and were, therefore, subjected to forced segregation. Critique ...

genetic disorder, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, CAH. The mother in bewilderment asks what the

When an illness is becoming medicalized it can appear to be fueled by three factors; influence of the
medical profession, social movements, and directed organizational activity (Conrad, 3 4).
Medicalization can be useful in giving knowledge to individuals dealing with an unknown
predicament, but sometimes, like the case in CAH, it can be questioned to if a medicalized stance on
an illness is necessary. A key example of medicalization of a physical condition that aligns with the
genital concerns of CAH would be male impotence. This condition, like ambiguous genitals, does not
have a negative impact on the physical health of the individual at all, but a drug, Viagra, has been
administered to men anyway (Conrad, 6). The side effects of Viagra range from the minute stuffy nose
to very serious concerns such as memory problems and loss of hearing. Despite these risks, men
continue to take the medication because of the aesthetic around being able to perform in the bedroom.

The Mackenzie commission was created by the liberal government. The Commission served two
purposes, to ensure the legitimacy of the RCMP s practices, and a second unannounced purpose, to
improve the service s efficiency. The investigation of the RCMP s SIS was concluded with 4
recommendations. To improve political control, it was suggested to create an independent service
without police powers, and the minister of security should play a role in the management of this new
service to ensure there are clear operational et juridical limits. The recommendations made to improve
the services efficiency, were, to provide university education to agents, so they may be better equipped

An external independent service was not created, however, there was a separation made internally, and
all members reported to a central office in Ottawa. A minister was appointed to oversee the RCMP,

the RCMP to give proper judgement on their activity. Finally, there was no follow up on the final two
recommendations of university education and the addition of civilian experts. The RCMP faced
controversy, again, after the events related to the Quebec separatist movement, as the Prime Minister
directed the RCMP to treat this threat the same as they did the communist threat (Rico, 1980). The
RCMP had already been conducting surveillance on these groups, and took this new order to mean
they were to destroy this movement. Section G was created to gather all information available on

the journey is frightening and never seems to get simpler throughout our lives. The problems we face
are different for everybody. And after life thought us its lessons, we oftentimes have to remind
ourselves of the origin of the lessons to reinstate its principles. This is also the case in Elizabeth
Bishop s poem in the waiting room . In this poem the speaker, Elizabeth, has trouble accepting who
she is, when she not only realizes she is part of a larger, more complex, society but also that she is a
woman. With a good dose of reality, a bit of artistry, and a clear form, Bishop has written a poem that

Through the form of the poem the speaker s mood and state of mind become evident, and the more she

five stanzas, and in the first stanza, that consists of fifty three lines, the speaker sounds very confident,
she is able to name where she is and what she is doing, in the waiting room of the dentist s office,
where she is reading the National Geographic. In the following stanza, that consists of twenty one
lines, we see that the speaker is captivated by her thoughts and starts questioning why she has to be
like the women in the picture and her aunt. She no longer says that she is in the waiting room, she only
tells us that she sees shadowy gray knees,/trousers and skirts and boots/and different pairs of

why she has to be like her aunt or any other woman for that matter, and what the similarities between
herself and other women are, she does not mention her surroundings anymore. Then it seems the
speaker completely lost touch with reality in the penultimate stanza, of only four lines, where she says
that The waiting room was bright/and too hot. It was sliding/beneath a big black wave,/another, and
another . This suggests that she might have fainted. In the last stanza she brings us and herself back to

42. The Problem Of E Waste
E Waste may be described as a broad and growing range of electronics ranging from large household
devices such as refrigerators, air conditioners, cell phones, personal stereos and consumer electronics
to computers, which have been discarded by their users. (Puckett and Smith, 2002). While this
description is accurate, it is slightly ambiguous about the length of time before a device can actually
be considered waste. Often, owners discard their electronics long before they have reached the end of
their actual life cycle in order to upgrade to a newer model. In most cases the outgoing device finds its
way into the used market. This may prolong the life of the product by a few years, however all
electronic items eventually reach a point ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With devices becoming increasingly affordable, the replacement time for common consumer
electronics has also become shorter. Planned obsolescence is a significant contributor to the increase
in purchase of consumer electronics. Many companies these days limit software updates and features
to only a handful of new phones or tablets they offer, thus perpetuating the need to go out and
purchase the new model. The average use time before a consumer replaces their mobile phone is only
18 months even though it s actual life cycle may be much longer than that. PCs and laptops are usually
considered outdated within 3 4 years of purchase and are then replaced by their owners for newer and
faster models. Studies have estimated e waste generation worldwide at 20 to 50 million tonnes per
year with a steady increase of 8% to 10% annually. One of the methods to estimate the potential
volume of e waste in the present and the future is by analyzing sales figures of commercial
electronics. By taking into account how much we are buying, we may be able to approximate how
much will be added to this waste stream a few years down the line when newly purchased devices
become obsolete and are discarded. On the release of the latest iPad, electronic buy back firms stated
that consumers were trading in their older tablets at an unprecedented rate for the new iteration even
though their older tablets were completely functional and working.

43. Love Sonnets In Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 By William...
Sonnets written in Elizabethan England were usually after Petrarch s works. Petrarch was a man who
was in love with a girl name Laura de Noves. He wrote 366 poems about his love for this woman from
the year 1327 all the way until 1368. His works were very stereotypical love poems that included lines
like, She ruled in beauty o er this heart of mine, / A noble lady in a humble home, / And now her time
for heavenly bliss has come, / Tis I am mortal proved, and she divine. Petrarch wrote in such a way to
charm a woman, as did many other writers of his time. However, there is one writer who took a
different approach when writing about the woman he admired. This man considered on the greatest
writers in the English language; William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is a reverse portrayal of Petrarch s
ideas of a love sonnet and what it should be. Shakespeare s Sonnet 130 is often also referred to as My
mistress eyes, which adds emphasis to the first line, My mistress eyes are nothing like the sun. As the
opening line, this makes readers aware of what they are about to encounter throughout the sonnet. In
this work Shakespeare is simply mocking the work of writers like Petrarch, and we as readers love it.
Metaphors making comparisons to nature are often used to show the beauty of something when
writing. William Shakespeare s Sonnet 130, makes the same comparisons, however he makes the
metaphors in favor of the natural features rather than his mistress. Shakespeare isn t being rude to his
mistress by doing so; he is taking things at face value and being blatantly honest. The sonnet has been
included below for easier comparison. Notice that each negative metaphor in the first part of the
sonnet takes up only one line, and does not rhyme. Later in the poem Shakespeare expands the
comparisons to two lines. This has multiple effects on the poem such as allowing it to expand. By
allowing expansion, the sonnet is prevented from being stagnant. Although Shakespeare was mocking
other writer s forms of love poems, I feel that he had a much deeper and more meaningful purpose to
his sardonic writing. Shakespeare wanted to show that women can be beautiful without having cheeks
as red as rose, or eyes

46. Analysis Of In Praise Of Fast Food
All aspects of fast food have been criticized significantly, especially since the health food trend craze
came around. An argument by culinary Luddites that is often thrown around is that our ancestors never
had the access to these options and lived a much happier natural lifestyle. Rachel Laudan brought
these points to the forefront to be critiqued in her writing In Praise of Fast Food . Rachel Laudan
brings the argument that individuals have always participated in the consumption of convenience
based foods, the goal in growing and producing food has always been to alter produce to make it more
convenient as well as better tasting. Fast food is not as new of an invention as many believe it to be.
Modern mainstream media outlets have pushed the belief that processing food has been the worst
thing for the well being of the human body. Rachel Laudan makes some very solid points in the fast
food debate that should be noted.
It is commonly believed that fresh and natural is the correct dietary plan above all else. To start out,
Rachel Laudan brings up the concept that going back to the way of our ancestors may not be what
individuals need in the modern world. Rachel Laudan questions the idea that the people of the past
lived a much healthier lifestyle than the current population finds acceptable by giving the reader
mental imagery about how the people of the past truly were living and how undesirable that life was.
Consequently, Rachel Laudan backs up her beliefs by arguing about the benefits of the healthy natural
eating of the people of the past Natural was unreliable. Fresh milk soured; eggs went rotten.
Everywhere seasons of plenty were followed by seasons of hunger. Natural was also usually
indigestible. Grains, which supplied 50 to 90 percent of calories in most societies, have to be threshed
ground, and cooked to make them edible (Faigley 271). Rachel Laudan seems to be arguing that life
for the people of the past was not something to create a lifestyle around. In conclusion, the lifestyle of
the past was a difficult one based on uncertainty due to the dependency of the crops to thrive.
Next, Rachel Laudan argues the point that the processing of food is not a product of recent invention,
every society

48. Ballot Format Or Ordering Of Candidate Names Should Not Be...
When candidates stand for an election the ballot format or ordering of candidate names should not
have an impact on the outcome of an election. For democracy to prosper candidates should be
competing on a fair level playing field i.e. One candidate should not have an advantage over another.
Secondly, the most popular candidate preferred by those voting should win the election. The article
BallotMaps aims to find out if the position of a candidate s name on the ballot paper influences the
number of votes received by the candidate within their party, independently of their party and weather
this varies geographically. Furthermore, another aspect that was explored was the ethnicity of

Secondly, we would need to seek an alternative way on how to conduct elections I.e. How people vote
or the layout of ballots so that a fair level playing field exists.
Two statistics were calculated, these were the Chi statistic and the residual; The Chi statistic assess the
degree of name order bias and was calculated to give an indication as to the disparity in votes acquired
by candidates relating to issues other than party affiliation as: X = (obs exp)/√exp
Where OBS stands for actual votes received by candidate and EXP stands for the expected number of
votes which should in theory be one third of the total party votes. For example if labour was to receive
120 votes then in theory each of the 3 candidates representing labour should all receive 40 votes each.
Thus if a positive value of X i.e. 40 signals that the candidate received more than the expected number
of votes if only political party was assumed to influence candidate votes, whilst a negative value i.e.
40 indicate fewer than expected votes were received. The residual identifies candidates that have
greater or fewer votes than predicted given their party affiliation having taken into account any name
order bias. It is calculated as the difference between the percentage of party votes received by a
candidate and that expected for an average candidate with the
