Mandibular lateral incisor
 Develops from 4 primary center of
growth(lobes) ; 3 labial, 1 lingual lobe
 Larger than mandibular central incisor
 Almost similar to central incisor, has a smooth
and minimal depressions along its surfaces.
Labial Aspect
 Crown outline is trapezoidal
 Resembles mand. central
incisor, but not bilaterally
symmetrical
 Distal side has a slight bulge
 Crown is tilted distally, incisal
ridge is straight and slopes
downward towards the distal.
- Root is tapering and apical and
curved slightly to distal
 The distoinsical angle is
noticibly more rounded
compared to mesioincisal
angle
 This aids in telling left from
right
Contact Areas:
 Mesial- incisal 3rd, near the
incisal ridge
 Distal- incisal 3rd, but more
cervical to the level of the
MCA
Lingual Aspect
 Almost same as central incisor
 Crown outline is trapezoidal
 Crown tilted distally on its root
base
 Small smooth cingulum and is
slightly distal to the long axis of
toot
 Mesial marginal ridge is longer
than distal marginal ridge
 Marginal ridges and lingual
fossa are not conspicuous
and is generally smooth
 The root is narrow lingually
than labially
Mesial Aspect
•Crown outline is triangular
•Mesial side of crown longer than
distal side, causing incisal ridge to
slope downward towards distal
•Tendency toward deeper concavity
immediately above CEJ on the distal
surface
•Crown is longer than central, root is
considerably longer
•Larger in all dimensions than
central incisors
Comparison of Central and Lateral
incisor
From the mesial
aspect,
a distolingual twist of
the incisal edge places
the distal portion more
lingually
Distal Aspect
 Almost the same as mesial aspect
 Cementoenamel junction usually 1 mm
less than central incisor’s CEJ
 Distal side tapers distolingually making
the mesial side not visible from the distal
aspect.
Incisal
Aspect
 The crown is broader labiolingually than
mesiodistally
 Not bilaterally symmetrical, distal is twisted
