Permafrost is permanently frozen soil found in cold regions. It is divided into two types - pergelisol in the subsoil and molisol at the surface. Large amounts of carbon and methane are stored in permafrost, and global warming is causing the permafrost to thaw and release these greenhouse gases. As permafrost thaws, it can damage infrastructure on the surface and release ancient viruses, while contributing to further climate change.
