Perky Piung Words Adventure hand in hand with the Pejabat Pendidikan
Daerah Hulu Terengganu challenge English Language learners to participate in
the biggest online reading challenge this year.
In Reading Habits of Malaysian Students beyond Classroom, the authors
determined that reading rank at 7 accounting for 34.7%. At the same time, they
identified the top three choices of reading materials, which were newspapers and
magazines (70%), novels (48%) and comics (34.5%). This study indicated the low
inclination towards reading as a recreational activity. They further suggest that
educators have a role in being a reading-model of becoming learners (Schaar et
al., 2013). Also, scholars further assert that students perusing books for
examinations rather than knowledge and pleasure (Inderjit, 2014; Schaar et al.,
2013).
Reading habits must be inculcated with persistence and patience. Strategies
must be revised therefore, a reading initiative that is appropriate and
appreciated may be developed. The reading initiative must also take into
consideration of cultivating a long-term interest in reading.
With all these factors in mind, this challenge aspires to ignite a lifetime
spark for reading by embracing the 2-minute rule (David Allen, 2015). The 2-
minute rules state “When you start a new habit, it should take less than two
minutes to do.” The perception of having to do the task in 2 minutes dilutes the
difficulty and leads to productivity (Clear, n.d.).
To participate, students are expected to choose and read English Language
text for 2 minutes as well as interacting with the world around them in physical
and digital form. This challenge aspires to empower students’ language
competency, fostering impeccable ethics and ignite a lifetime spark for reading.
This challenge further aims to complete 100 readings from students across the
country within 3 months.

Objectives
It is hoped by the end of the project, it will benefit both the educators and the
participants.
Educators will be able to:
• foster good reading habits in students by conducting meaningful activities.
• have access to a huge resource of reading videos that can be used in the
classroom.
Participants will be able to:
• choose reading materials suitable for their level.
• read fluently with correct pronunciation and intonation.
• interact with other digital natives
Time Frame
The project will be executed for a period of 3 months from April - June 2020.
Target Group
Open to all English Language learners of Malaysia from kindergarten to tertiary
education.
Activities
• Students will choose an English language text. The text must be suitable for the
general audience. No profanity will be tolerated.
• Read fluently for 2 minutes.
• The videos must be sent to the challenge coordinator -email
siscasmahhanim@gmail.com or telegram 011-37410014.
• Videos received will be uploaded on the PPWA YouTube channel.
• E-certificate will be issued upon completion of the challenge

Conclusion
Reading is a good habit to keep for a lifetime. At the moment, it competes with a
variety of new interests that have been brought on with the advancement of
technology. As an educator, we must rebrand reading as a skill that is future-proof
thus serving as a tool that is imperative towards one’s success. With the prospect
of online presence through YouTube, it hopes to inject an appeal to the younger
generation. Perky Piung Words Adventure take this challenge into its repertoire
and would like to invite the English Language learners to join in for the biggest
online reading class this year!
