Peer drafting is a collaborative writing process where writers discuss their work with others to develop ideas more fully. For the peer drafting workshop, students must bring two hard copies of a written compilation of their essay progress so far and actively participate in discussions to provide and receive feedback on developing ideas and supporting details. Completing this activity successfully will earn students partial credit for participation in the writing unit.

What do our students need to learn to be productive in the workplace, to get a job, what skills do they need? The workplace has changed, leadership has changed, and the future is collaboration. This presentation will discuss the methods and tools used in two online project classes. We will show you how we take our learning outcomes and design online classes to simulate a workplace environment. These courses are designed to give students the most realistic workplace environment that we can in an academic setting. One course teaches Emerging Technologies by using teamwork and collaboration environments. The other course uses the System Development Lifecycle as a guide for students to complete an individual project with feedback and brainstorming from other students. The goals for the session are: demonstrating and discussing collaboration, showing how to include useful teamwork in an online environment, working as a collective team, sharing information and knowledge, encouraging suggestions and ideas, brainstorming, building in frustration on purpose, using peer feedback in projects, enabling team resources, and embracing roles and responsibilities. Attendees will walk away with a template of how to design a course for a workplace environment while meeting the learning objectives of the course.

How can we effectively mentor newcomers without taking time away from other ongoing design work?

Ask anyone who has trained a new level designer or taught level design students, and they will tell you that a major challenge is balancing training for the technical aspects of the job while also teaching them "good" level design. In the studio environment, you also have to teach communication, documentation, designing for specific types of gameplay, or the elements of your studio's "style." How can we effectively mentor newcomers without taking time away from other ongoing design work?
This talk by a level designer and educator with 13+ years of experience examines processes that studios can use to onboard new designers in productive and accessible ways. It does so through topics such as setting "learning goals", assigning quick-but-usable level design exercises, incorporating "style" into task specifications, and how to structure feedback. This talk incorporates both on-the-job knowledge and examples collected from education to build a roadmap for effective mentorship.

- 1. ENGL102 SP18 – C.J. Hill UNIT 1 ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS Peer Drafting Workshop Writing is a collaborative, often vocal process. As strange as it may seem, writers cannot stay quiet and reserved about their ideas in order to create the strongest possible piece; rather, writers must discuss and workshop their work with other writers and thinkers to fully flesh out their writing. The physical act of typing on a keyboard is only one part of the writing process. You may be used to “Peer Review,” but this is called “Peer Drafting.” What’s the difference? Peer Review Peer Drafting • Focus on copyediting • Focus on making corrections • Writing is already largely complete • Students aren’t likely to continue writing after peer review • Focus on idea generation • Focus on making new connections • Writing is still in process • Students will be in a place in the process where feedback will be truly beneficial THIS ACTIVITY REQUIRES: • Attendance on the assigned day • Some form of written compilation of students’ progress on essay thus far (an outline, a rough rough draft, notes on their topic, a thesis statement, etc.) o This written compilation should be a hardcopy, no computer or smart phone use will be tolerated during this activity. Each student should bring in 2 hardcopies • Active participation and input on each discussed essay in terms of idea generation and support ASSESSMENT: • This activity makes up one quarter of the unit’s participation points (12.5 points) • The instructor will shadow each group to determine if active participation is attained TAKE-AWAY: • Students should leave their peer drafting workshop with written notes of what they plan to continue working on with their essays based on peer feedback
