The pectoralis major muscle originates from the clavicle, sternum, and upper six costal cartilages and inserts on the lateral lip of the bicepital groove of the humerus. It adducts the arm, medially rotates it, and the clavicular fibers also flex the arm. The pectoralis minor originates from the third, fourth, and fifth ribs and inserts on the coracoid process of the scapula. It depresses the point of the shoulder and if the scapula is fixed, it elevates the ribs of origin.
