Using icons is a great way to add visuals to your presentation. There are many ways to get icons online, some are even free. But if you need a specific icon that you can’t find or if you want a special spin to your icon (color, shadow etc) – you can use PowerPoint’s great (and somewhat hidden) “Merge Shapes” commands to create your own icons. Using these commands you can combine basic shapes into other shapes. You can union and subtract shapes. You can intersect and combine. All while still working natively inside PowerPoint. Once you have created an icon you can change the color, filling and add shadows as needed. It is just as fun as building with Lego blocks! Well, almost.. This is a guide in 15 steps showing you how you can use these commands to create your own icon - the example we are using is a calendar icon.

Bluebeam eXtreme conference is a premier meeting place for Bluebeam users from the world’s top architecture, engineering and construction firms who are seeking to push the limits of project communication and collaboration. My session, “Using Bluebeam Revu to preserve value across a project’s entire lifecycle” (presentation and demonstration) focused on how I use Bluebeam Revu to preserve the value of data and extend ROI across the entire project lifecycle, from the initial design phase through site inspection, engineering, construction, maintenance and building operation.

Partners shared BIM lessons learned to date on the University of Hull's £30 million student accommodation complex. The project will see six new accommodation blocks, housing 560 students, open in 2016. A new protocol for Building Information Modelling (BIM) has been followed from the outset of the project, which saw developers Sewell Construction start on site in June. BIM already sees collaboration and information shared between engineers, clients, architects and contractors in a 3D format and is widely used within the construction industry, however, the Government will mandate BIM Level 2 for all centrally-procured government contracts from April 2016. Using these new guidelines on the university site means designs and briefs for the project have been more thorough than ever before, providing further cost and quality assurance for the university. It also includes looking at the whole life of the building and ensuring facilities management plans are in place from the start, reducing variance in design. Estates staff from the University of Hull along with project partners from Sewell Construction, ARUP, SES, GSS Architecture and Planon have shared their findings of a pragmatic approach to BIM Level 2 to date with University estates teams from across the Yorkshire region, in a bespoke event at the Hull campus.
