This document discusses strategies for formative assessment that empower students to assess their own learning. It encourages open-mindedness and risk-taking to share current practices and make new connections. Some strategies presented include think-pair-share activities, making learning intentions and criteria transparent, presenting criteria in manageable chunks, and using rubrics, checklists, reflection questions, and technology tools to involve students in self and peer assessment. It also presents obstacles to student self-assessment and the gradual release of responsibility model to frame shifting assessment practices from teacher-controlled to student-controlled.
