Encephalitis is an inflammation of the central nervous system that can be caused by various organisms including viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, spirochetes, and helminths. Some common viral causes are herpes simplex virus, enterovirus, measles, mumps, rubella, and chickenpox virus. Encephalitis can also be caused by exposures to ticks, mosquitoes, cats or other animals. Non-infectious causes can also lead to encephalitis.
