Oral Health Among Korean Older Adults
Title: Using CBPR Methods to Address Oral Health among Korean Older Adults
1. Significance:
The proposed research, which uses Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) methods, builds
on Dr. Ahluwalia s existing work with homebound older adults, which seeks to inform oral health
policy for New York City home delivered meal recipients in New York City (NYC). The proposed
research will focus on working with the Korean community in NYC to understand oral health needs
among Korean older adults, and to use the data collected to inform the development of oral health
related interventions for this population.
A recent review of the oral health literature indicates that there are few studies that document oral
health needs among Koreans in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Therefore, the goal of this project is to use CBPR methods to collaborate with partners in the Korean
community to address oral health among a particularly vulnerable subset of the Korean community
older adults who may have significant medical, cognitive and functional co morbidities, and who may
find it difficult to navigate the oral and health care systems due to challenges associated with
language, transportation and culture. By working with KCS, we hope to improve the visibility of oral
health in the Korean community, and to leverage the potential of the collaboration to address oral
health in other Korean groups e.g. children and family. CBPR methods are an effective way to achieve
this goal because they require working closely with KCS, the community partner, and seek to enhance
the capacity of the community, thus enhancing the potential sustainability of future intervention
programs. The proposed research can potentially impact approximately 5000 Korean seniors through
KCS.
The proposed research builds on Dr. Kavita Ahluwalia s continuing CBPR project titled Oral health
and nutrition in NYC HDM recipients . I have been working with Dr.Ahluwalia on this project for the
past year. I want to extend and apply what I have

Kardashian Research Paper
The Kardashians Are Encouraging Young Women to Be Promiscuous What exactly is the definition of
promiscuous? Most people would say being sexy, others might think it s being revealing. Promiscuous
is defined as having or involving many sexual partners, as said from the Merriam Webster dictionary.
If that s the case, the Kardashian clan falls into that category. The Kardashians are known for plowing
through many successful lovers. This consistent hobby has gained them a major spot in the spotlight.
It has also started their known careers and is responsible for their many businesses and fortune. Their

Brian And Alex s Influence On College Campuses
College campuses today are recognized as places with high crime rates, with crimes ranging from
sexual assault to theft to cheating. While many students may say they feel safe on campus, some
report that there is still a sense of fear; some even say they don t trust their fellow students when it
comes to their belongings. It is true that most perpetrators are fellow students, and they are only
successful because they know the routines of their fellow colleagues and know the best periods to
attack. In the following scenario, Brian and Alex are college sophomores who have been roommates
for a year. Brian s course schedule for that semester forces him to be on campus from eight thirty in
the morning until almost five o clock in the evening on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Alex has
a lighter schedule and he only has to go to campus from noon to three thirty every day, so he is home
while Brian goes to his classes. These students are living away from their parents, so they do not have
any capable guardians with them as a positive influence. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

some of those items without being accused of theft. One Friday afternoon at the end of the semester

After using a credit card to slide open Brian s bedroom door, he unplugs the TV and gaming console
and takes them down to his car. He then returns for the headphones that Brian left on his bed and finds
a stash of over five hundred dollars in cash in Brian s sock drawer. Alex drives his car back home to

Remember September 11, 2001
Many people can look back and remember September 9th, 2001, like it was yesterday. This day will
be forever remembered in America s History. This is the day the world seemed as it stood still. On
9/11, America experienced a major terrorist attack, which hijacked planes were crashed into the World
Trade Centers in New York City, crashed into the Pentagon in the District of Columbia, and had a
plane crash into the fields of Pennsylvania. There are many theories on what actually happened and
who was involved in the 9/11 attack. The most common word is that Islamic terrorists were the main
group involved. It is also said that these terrorists were financed by Osama bin Laden s al Qaeda
terrorist organization. Which is why he was such a wanted man after the attacks. But it wasn t just the
Islamic terrorists who were involved, many say that there were many other Arab nations involved in
some way, such as the planning and details. The location of the attacks were skillfully thought out.
Each hijacked pilot had a mission to complete. A plan to do major damage in one of the most tratisofic
way. The World Trade Center had almost 50,000 people who worked there. That is a huge target to get
people s attention. Alot of the job positions that were filled at the World Trade Center or also known as
Twin Towers, had to deal with trade. Even trade to other countries and nations. Which is another
reason why this target was most likely picked. Not only was the Twin Towers a chosen target but

Phanerozoic Eras
The earth has been around for 4.6 billion years, and over this time 99.9% of all of the species that have
existed on earth have gone extinct. (Barnosky, et al) Palaeontologists characterize mass extinctions as
times in Earth s history when the Earth loses more than three quarters of its species in a geologically
short period of time. This has occurred 5 times over the past 540 million years, and scientists are now
suggesting it is happening a 6th time. We are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction that has the
potential to wipe out many species of importance, and humans have a profound impact on it.
Essentially, there have been 5 mass extinctions during the history of life on earth. (Wake, Vredenburg)
And, the time the earth has existed has been divided up into eons, eras, periods, and epochs based on
the geologic strata of that age. (Impey) There are two eons, the Pre cambrian and the Phanerozoic. In
the Pre cambrian there are 3 eras, the Haydean, Archean, and the Proterozoic. In the Phanerozoic,
there are the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic Eras. In the Paleozoic, there are seven periods, the
Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Mississippian, Pennsylvanian, and Permian. Then for
Mesozoic there are three periods, Triassic, Jurassic, Cretaceous. In the ... Show more content on

impacts, could have been the cause behind this extinction, as warm water taxa were mainly affected by

Chevrolet European Chief it is sleek, it has a high tech interior and arched roofline and most
importantly it was Chevrolet s first global product that would be the future of where the brand will be.
Before launching the Cruze, General Motor had been trying very hard for many years to make
Chevrolet as its main global brand. This is because they are very different from their main competitors
i.e., Honda and Toyota, General Motor has a huge brand portfolio in different countries. For example,
Chevrolet dominates in US, Opel in Europe and Buick in China. They also took over Daewoo in South
Korea in 2002 and after rebranding some of their models GM started selling them in Asia and Europe
under the name of Chevrolet.
There was a huge strategy of GM behind launching Cruze. With a brand new design, Cruze was
launched when GM needed the most. The major reason behind it was there was a huge downfall in the
auto sales of GM in US. That is why GM planned to launch a global product that would help them to
recover losses that they suffered.
RISKS INVOLVED:
Besides a vision to gain profit there were some risks involved as well with the launch of Cruze. The
first risk was tough competition from the rivals and another was low fuel economy. Cruze was
expected to give a fuel economy of around 40 plus miles per gallon which was good enough

Normandy and invasion of German occupied France). The analysis and evaluation will be done using
the intellectual standards and the elements of reasoning to provide an alternate outcome for Operation

Hodgkin s Lymphoma Case Study
The disease that I chose is Nodular Lymphocyte Predominant Hodgkin s lymphoma (NLPHL), a type
of cancer, but specifically a type of Hodgkin s lymphoma. I have chosen this because a year ago I was
battling it. One day I was a normal teenager and the next, I was getting to know the Hematology
Oncology clinic that I d be spending a numerous amount of days in. Hodgkin s lymphoma can affect
anyone, all the way from a baby to a 114 year old lady. But NLPHL usually affects 30 40 year old
men, which I am neither. To say my diagnosis was a surprise would be an understatement. I had some
of the symptoms, night sweats and low grade fever, but I didn t really have the weight loss or any
enlarged lymph nodes, at least that I could see. Most people are able to not only see the lymph nodes,
but feel the firmness of it. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The chemo regimen ABVD is often used as a treatment for general Hodgkin s lymphoma, so I had that

NLPHL, since it s a very small portion of Hodgkin lymphoma and not usually seen in teens, let alone
female ones. The downside to treatment is the terrible side effects that most, but not all people get. For
chemo they are, but not limited to, hair loss, mouth sores, nausea, diarrhea and fatigue. And for
Rituximab the side effects can include headache, flu symptoms, joint and muscle pain, back pain,
night sweats and nausea. These side effects are only the short term ones, the ones that go away once
treatment is done, but there are many long term side effects that I ve yet to run

Separation Of Powers And The United Kingdom s...
This essay is aimed to focus on and examine the importance of having a separation of powers and the
reasons for having same in the United Kingdom s constitution. We shall further look into the structure
of the United Kingdom s constitution whilst assessing its somewhat unclear separation of powers
which exist and assess the reasons why the United Kingdom s system of government does not adhere
to the doctrine of the separation of powers. The separation of powers is defined as the political
doctrine of constitutional law under which the branches of government are divided to prevent an abuse
of power. These three branches are the Legislative, Executive and Judicial and are assigned special
powers to maintain a check and balance on each other. In this essay, we shall further go on to discuss
the roles and functions of each of the mentioned branches of government and the extent to which this
defined separation of power is enforced and/or practiced in the United Kingdom s system of
government taking into account the traditional structure that has been maintained over the years.
Aristotle states, There are three elements in each constitution ...first, the deliberative, which discusses
everything of common importance; second the officials; and third, the judicial element. These three
elements as defined by Aristotle are now known as our Legislative, Executive and Judicial arms of the
United Kingdom s system of government.

Too Much Thankfulness
I ve been hearing a lot about this thankfulness thing. I can t get away from it. It started with
Thanksgiving. Before digging in to a big Thanksgiving feast at my daughter s house, we all took turns
saying something for which we were thankful. My grandkids loved the idea so much, that they have
continued the practice of naming something they are thankful for every night before dinner. They look
forward to it.
Then one day last week, while driving home during rush hour traffic I heard a story on the radio about
a monk named David Steindl Rast who believes that gratitude is the key to happiness. He was quoted
as saying, We all know people who have lots of misfortunes that we ourselves would not want to have,
and they are deeply happy, they radiate happiness, he says. Why are they like this? Because they are
grateful. It is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy.
I had just finished reading a book set in World War I, in which one of the characters was a soldier who
served as an ambulance driver. His job was to drive into the middle of the battlefield, pick up
wounded soldiers, and take them to the army field hospital. In the midst of all the horror, pain, and
death of war, this man tasked himself with finding beauty in the otherwise bleak and dismal landscape
of war. When he found something beautiful, he wrote it down in a notebook he carried. He had noted a
flower struggling to poke through the trampled earth, a soldier s

Immanuel Kant And The Kant Essay
Immanuel Kant Lying Chiyane Peterson MCCC Ethics MW 1:30pm Parviz Dehghani Lying the one
form of communication that is the untruth expressed to be the truth. Immanuel Kant states that lying is
morally wrong in all possible ways. His hatred for lying has made him just assumed that anyone who
lied would be operating with a maxim like this: tell a lie so as to gain some benefit. (Landau,pp.171)
This is true for a vast number of people, they will lie in order to gain a certain benefit from the lie
rather than the truth. It is similar to if you play a game of truth or dare, some rather pick a dare because
it would release them from having to tell the truth. However, those who do pick truth still have a
chance to lie to cover up the absolute truth.People lie in order to cover who they truly are. Even if you
lie to benefit someone or something else, it would not matter to Kant because he does not care for the
consequences. If you lie but have a good intention it is not the same for Kant, he would argue that you
still lied no matter the consequence that a lie is a lie. While lying, we accuse others for not being
transparent. While being hypocrites ourselves, we expect others to be sincere. (Dehghani,Ethics) We
know how it feels to be lied to by a person, so in order to not have the feeling returned, we hope the
person will be truthful. We rather be surrounded by truthful people constantly despite all the lies that
some people tell. No

Animal Assisted Therapy By Dr. Levinson
Animal assisted therapy was created in 1792 to help patients in mental asylums to be able to interact
with animals in peaceful environments and opportunities that otherwise they would not see. This was
created by Dr. Levinson when he first saw a dog and boy that he had been treating interact with one
another. This soon began to spread throughout the countries. It first arrived in the U.S. in 1944 through
1945 at a Hospital north of New York City, the hospital called Pawling army air force convalescent.
The patients here interacted with farm animals such as horses and chickens. But with many things it
took a long time before any data from places like this was collected. However it is becoming a more
respected field among professionals ( Altschiller, D. 2011). It has been seen that pets can help calm
people, lower blood pressure and they are great for people or children that cannot or do not relate well
to other people. Pets may help patients recover from acute illness a study of patients following their
discharge from the critical care unit found that 11 out of 39 patients without pets died within the
subsequent year, compared with only three of 53 patients who had pets (Floyd, et al. 2003).There are
many animals that can be used in pet therapy but we are going to mainly focus on dogs and horses.

Does The Percentage Of Fat Affect The Height Of Ice Cream
How Does the Percentage of Fat in Milk Affect the Height of Ice Cream?
Purpose
The purpose of this experiment was to determine how different types of milk and cream, with different
percentages of fat, affect the height of the resulting ice cream.
Background Information Fats are lipids, which are organic compounds composed of hydrogen,
carbon, and oxygen. Most fat molecules consist of three fatty acid tails and a glycerol. Fatty acid tails
are made of hydrogen and carbon, the way that they are arranged determines the type of fat. There are
two broad categories of fats saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fats contain only single bonds
between carbons, while unsaturated fats contain double or triple bonds. When saturated, they are filled
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the ingredients are mixed together, the fat particles are disturbed and broken apart. Air is
distributed into the mixture and held in place between the fat molecules to create a smooth texture (
The Science of Ice Cream , PhysicsBuzz). At first, these products are close to room temperature,
conversely, the end product is a frozen dessert. To do this, the mixture must be cooled past its freezing
point. The ice is what ultimately freezes the cream. However, since the mixture is not just pure water,
which freezes at 0° Celsius, the freezing point must be cooler. Freezing point depression is a
colligative property where more solute is added to the solvent. In this case, salt is the solute and the
ice/water is the solvent. If the concentration of the solution is increased, consequently, the freezing
point will decrease to be lower than that of the usual. The new change will then allow the ice to absorb
the heat and melt, while transferring the coldness to the ice cream. When the ice constantly comes in
contact with the salt crystals, by stirring, churning, or other methods, it becomes cooler because of the
interaction between them. By lowering the temperature of the ice and salt mixture, the ice cream is
able to harden and take shape because it still freezes at 0° Celsius and it is being cooled down to reach

The Impact Of Rapid Population Growth On Brazil s Economy
Population Growth in Brazil
1. The impact of impact of rapid population growth on Brazil s economy.
a. Rapid Human Population Growth
Population growth is the change in population over a given period of time. Research suggests that the
world s poorest countries have faster population grows. Historically, high fertility rates strongly
correlate with poverty. Brazil is estimated to have a population of 203 million people. Brazil s
population is expected to grow to 203 million to 226 million people by year 2050. In the 1970 Brazil
was facing rapid population growth and a food shortage. Research shows that Brazil is the third largest

Brazil was one of the fastest growing major economies in the world surpassing that of the United
Kingdom. Brazil s economic growth has however decelerated in 2013 and had almost no liquid
growth throughout 2014. Brazil s economy is expected to grow by only 1.8% in 2015.
Brazil is thought to be one of the fastest growing economies in the Americas. On the world s stage
Brazil is currently the third largest agricultural producing country. The country produces roughly 150
million tons of grains and oilseeds; and thirteen million tons of meat annually.
It should be noted that the Brazilian agriculture has not always been a thriving sector. The country s
increased population growth also elevated the need for food. The elevated need for food created a gap
between what was needed and what was produced. However, in 1972, the Brazilian Agricultural
Research Corporation, better known as Embrapa, was created with the goal being to develop
agriculture in the country through the generation and transfer of knowledge from scientists to farmers.
In today s market, food is Brazil s major export. Brazil s beef and pork supply have multiplied four
times in the past 35 years. In the same period, milk production rose from 2.1 billion gallons per year to
7.03 billion gallons, and the production of vegetables rose from 9 million tons to 19.3 million tons

Ester Lucero Essay
Cassie Essary Tim Petete Ethnic American Literature November 12, 2009 Angel s Psyche in Ester
Lucero One of the most fascinating aspects of any story is the formation of it scharacters. The way the
author chooses to describe them, give them personalities, is how the reader will see their lives. A
character s psyche and the way he thinks about events around him change the way a reader perceives
the story. Authors have an amazing chance to shape and bend a story to fit what they want it to be
through the characterization of the people they write about. If an author is incapable of making
characters believable and understandable, the story won t survive. In Isabel Allende s Ester Lucero ,
Angel is described in a way that makes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, Angel seems to have fixated on Ester as a way of getting past his ownproblems. Ester became
something that he desperately wanted, but could never allow himself to have. She was a child, and he
would not allow himself to touch her for that reason, and because his obsession with her is what keeps
him going. Ester became the focus of all his attention so he didn t have to deal with anything else in
his life. Another issue with Angel is the fact that he has a bullet in his groin. The women of the town
question his masculinity and begin to wonder if maybe the malaria or that bullet he has there in his
crotch rid him forever of a taste for women (Pearson 10). They don t realize that he has become
completely engrossed with Ester and therefore uninterested in the other women of the town. Since
Angel does have a bullet in his groin, and purposefully chose an unavailable girl to fixate on, it makes
the reader wonder if the bullet did cause some sort of dysfunction. Perhaps the reason that Angel
deliberately chose a girl that he could never have was because he knew women wouldn t want him if
they knew that he was impotent. Early on, when it is Angel s turn with a bride for the moment he
found no consolation ...he would have to search for that girl, if for no other reason than to determine
whether she was a mirage (Pearson 9). This passage

Most students who attend college are on an extreme budget; however, by learning how to manage one
s money in a life skills class can be very valuable in college. From here on, when I get overwhelmed
with how much money something will be I look back at when I took my success strategy class in my
first year of college; in a college success strategy really prepares student s for life skills that they will
need. Also, in success strategy class I learned how to budget money, and my financial aid. Therefore,
this was a very valuable life lesson that everyone should carry on into one s first career. These
management skills help students later in life, and more in depth than just a degree. Therefore, life
skills are detrimental to building self esteem and self respect, because overall it truly sets anyone up
for life. Also Graff explains in his passage that, only much later did it dawn on me that the sports

Travels Of A T-Shirt Sparknotes
1) Title and Author
The Travels of a T Shirt in the Global Economy. 2nd edition. Pietra Rivoli.
2) What did you find most interesting about the book?
What I found most interesting was the story of Nelson Reinsch and his ability to keep an open mind in
order to benefit from an ever changing system of comparative advantage. Nelson worked his entire
life as a cotton farmer, most of which was in the cottonest city in the world, Lubbock Texas. It was
fascinating to hear first hand accounts of how the cotton industry changed throughout Nelson s life.
Nelson adapted to the changing industry where farmers stuck in their traditional ways were eventually
left behind. Nelson and other farmers in the region benefited from their relationships with ... Show

However, one thing that troubled me was that Rivoli referred to clothes given to the Salvation Army as
being thrown away by rich Americans that only needed to make more room in their oversized closets
for more clothes that they would eventually throw away. Statements made by the author put
Americans in a very arrogant, haughty light. In my opinion, there is a big difference between donating
used clothing and throwing it away. Soccer moms would not race to throw clothing away; they would
simply put it out in the

The Vietnam War On Vietnam
The War on Vietnam Many believe that the way Americans entered the war against the North Vietnam
communists was unjust. The United States got into a war that they had no clue on how to win. The
Vietnam War was a long, costly armed conflict that pitted the communist regime of North Vietnam
and its southern allies, known as the Viet Cong, against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the
United States. The divisive war, increasingly unpopular at home, ended with the withdrawal of U.S.
forces in 1973 and the unification of Vietnam under Communist control two years later. More than 3
million people, including 58,000 Americans, were killed in the conflict. The South Vietnam
government was not communist like its counterpart to the north, and all they wanted was peace
amongst the North. The leader of the north was Ho Chi Minh, a communist leader that wanted
absolute power. Ho Chi Minh actually worked in the United States as a baker. It s odd for someone
from Vietnam to go work in a country like the United States of America, but with his rich family he
was able to travel to the United States to work. He also lived and traveled to the United Kingdom, he
worked as a chef again and a dish cleaner. When he traveled to France, he wanted equality amongst
the Vietnamese and French Indo China. He and group of his political friends attempted to have a
social reform amongst French Indo China but was denied by the French government. After years of

Willa Cather s My Antonia
Willa Cather s My Antonia is one of those novels that stands the length of time and firms its place in
Nebraska history as something that should be passed down from generation to generation. The
descriptions of the prairie s scenic landscape to the first impressions homesteaders had as they set foot
off the train to start a new life are all too omnipresent tales of experience in the Great Plains during the
19th century. This excerpt proudly displays Willa Cather s prose, As I looked about me I felt that the
grass was the country, as the water is the sea. The red of the grass made all the great prairie the color
of wine stains, or of certain seaweeds when they are first washed up. And there was so much motion in
it; the whole country seemed, somehow, to be running. The beauty of her writing takes a ... Show

The dominant theme of the novel is the parallel lives of the two and their move from the prairie to the
city. It is there where Jim finds a world in stark contrast to the work and relationships found in the
Great Plains. Also, the story is about Antonia and her experiences as a migrant worker and young
woman. A strong theme is displayed in how the group of poor migrant women in this town work as
farmers, nannies, and maids as they grow up and decide where their paths will take them based off
their early choices. In the end, Antonia is where she precisely wants to be, married and parenting
children. I drew a line from the story that correctly honors this notion of Antonia s appearance to Jim
when he reunites with her after many years; I know so many women who have kept all the things she
had lost, but whose inner glow has faded. Whatever else was gone, Antonia had not lost the fire of her
life. Her skin, so brown and hardened, had not that look of flabbiness, as if the sap beneath it had been
secretly drawn

Why NYU Thesis Statement
Why NYU? Two summers ago, I designed and executed my own experiments focused on cell
adhesion and its implications in the metastasis of cancer. When I fixed my cells for the first time in the

trials and errors that I discovered a love for biology and seeking answers to the unknown. Through the

Rose For Emily Isolation
A Rose for Emily is a short story written by William Faulkner. The story follows a southern town after
the civil war and with the death of Miss Emily. As the town gossips about the mysterious house that
no one has been inside for the past ten years, the secrets that Miss Emily had been hiding in the house
is also discussed. The story then picks up before Emily s death when her father dies. After being in
denial that her father is gone, she meets a man, Homer, and begins dating him. Shortly after, Emily
buys an arsenic and invites Homer to her house, even though he is not the marrying type. The town
never see s Homer after that night and rarely sees Emily. A smell starts to arise from the house and her
taxes pile up. Ten years later, Miss Emily dies and the town finally goes inside. What they find is a
man s skeleton on a dusty bed and, next to it, a strand of gray hair. Faulkner s story demonstrates to

The South said goodbye to slavery and started to become industrialized. Many, including Miss Emily,
did not like it. Faulkner pays close attention to the dying south and uses specific elements, like the old
southern house, to symbolize living in the past. In addition to the house, Homer, a Yankee, is
introduced into Emily s life. Perhaps she killed Homer because he represented change and the north,
or perhaps she was just crazy. Either way Miss Emily had an issue of clinginess. For three days after
her father s death, she refused to believe that he was gone. She also kept Homers body for ten years,
maybe because she was upset that her father was taken away. Although Emily s father rejected any
man that she brought over, perhaps keeping Homer was a way to get what she always wanted, a man
in her life. The reasons behind Emily s psychological behaviors vary. Although Miss Emily was
already crazy, isolating herself was the true cause of her destruction and sick

C60 Unit 9 Lab Report
Introduction
Fullerenes are molecules composed entirely of carbon in the form of a hallow sphere, ellipsoid, tube,
or plane. In this experiment, the purpose is to use cyclic voltammetry to infer about the electron
transfer in MOs of fullerenes and understand orbital energy and composition. The first part of the
experiment is an electrochemical characterization of C60. A sample of C60 ¬is dissolved and
transferred into an electrochemical cell. Cyclic voltammetry, a potential wave form is used for
determination of formal redox potentials, detection of chemical reactions that precede or follow the
electrochemical reaction and evaluation of electron transfer kinetics.
Additionally, an analysis of free energy of frontier molecular orbitals of benzene ... Show more

Huckel Theory describes interaction between orbitals using overlap integrals, simplifying by making
the overlap of non adjacent atoms equal to zero. Extended Huckel does not assume non adjacent atoms
are equal to zero, and uses K(1.7 2.0) to calculate the integrals.
The major difference between the two theories is the limitation of the orbitals each theory can
calculate. Huckel theory can only calculate π orbital electrons and planar molecules, whereas the
extended theory can also calculate non polar and other types of molecular orbitals.

The Truman Show By Peter Weir
For centuries, man has dreamt of constructing pristine simulated worlds , existing in a separate sphere
from our imperfect reality. From the town of Pullman, a company town south of Chicago to Disney
World, attempts to force Utopia have failed, falling prey to the complications of people s personal
desires. The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, tells us the story of The Truman Show, an elaborate
reality show built around the control of one man s life. Christof, the director, has created an entire
living city for Truman, the star of his show, and the only one not in on this whole elaborate fakery.
Essentially, Truman is living his life in the simulation of a flawless, archetypal American town, for the
entertainment of millions of viewers around the world. Christof, along with countless others obsessed
with the idea of controlling part of the world to fit their visions of an ideal reality, have deluded
themselves into thinking fictional utopias can exist apart from the undeniable constraints of reality.
Their fundamental flaw lies in relying on the assumptions of psychological behaviorism, and the belief
that they could perfectly condition the behavior of the inhabitants follow the goals of the community.
In order for Christof s scheme to work, Truman must be unaware that he s living in a simulation, and
be satisfied with the simulated life that s presented to him. As much as possible, Christof and his crew
try to control every element of Truman s life. A massive dome is

Solar Power Importance
Solar power is an important aspect of life that people should consider putting in their homes. Solar
power is the process of obtaining the energy from the sun and converting it to multiple uses. It can be
used to light, heat, and cool homes for cheaper than electric companies. Solar power is created by
using a device called a solar panel. Solar panels are used to soak up the sun s rays to create renewable
energy for homes and businesses. Solar power is saved during the daylight so that it can be used
during the night. If it is a cloudy day; enough energy can be preserved. If it isn t, the solar panel can
still get the energy it needs if the sun s rays shine through the clouds. On a cloudy day, the thicker the
clouds the less energy obtained(U.S. Department of Energy,2009).
Solar power is mostly used in places with the most sunshine. For example, they are majorly used in
places in the United States like California, New Mexico, and Arizona. Another good place to have
solar panels is in other countries, especially close to the equator. Close to the equator is a good spot for
the use of solar panels because the sun s rays are stronger there.
The process of creating the Solar panel is not an easy process. Solar panels are made up of mostly
different types of silicon and glass like substances. The process of making them and installing them is
costly, but after that they are done, they are fine. A photovoltaic cell is a cell that converts solar energy
into electrical energy(

Cosmopolitanism In Kwame Appiah s Things Fall Apart
In the novel, Things Fall Apart, power and dignity are very critical aspects of the main character,
Okonkwo. These traits, however, were brought up in Okonkwo in the wrong way. Okonkwo
suppresses his emotions under a violent image of power and pride. His traits can be demonstrated
through the events happening in his life, which include his upbringing of putting hard work and
dedication as his first priorities. He acquires a large amount of wealth that he puts towards his family,
and expects his children to strive towards the same goal. This expectation represents Okonkwo s
defiance of embracing any ideologies that aren t his own. In the novel, Cosmopolitanism, the concept
represented is to engage readers to understand the similarities and differences that are shared amongst
people in the world. The author, Kwame Appiah, states that cosmopolitanism begins with the simple
idea that in the human community, as in national communities, we need to develop habits of
coexistence: conversation in its older meaning, of living together, association (Appiah). The main idea
is to learn and understand how the people in the world choose to live their lives by accepting all
different kinds of cultures. The basic theme that is found in the novel is acceptance. Comparing
Cosmopolitanism to Things Fall Apart can work if there is a connection between Okonkwo s story and
being cosmopolitan. His life could have turned out differently if he would have had acceptance instead
of rejection in his

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Susie Orbach s Losing Bodies

Rhetorical Analysis Essay

Rhetorical Analysis of Losing Bodies
Losing Bodies by Susie Orbach is an essay I found to be more effective in its ability to confuse its
readers with its argument, than it is to convince them. The negative attributes of this essay: its
disorderly placement of evidence for her argument, tendency to deviate significantly from its proposed
thesis, the author s decision to oversimplify the target of her argument and use of logical fallacies,
greatly overshadow the more positive attributes of the essay: its effective use of emotional appeal and
its method of getting the reader involved in the argument through the use of rhethorical questions.
The logic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Losing Bodies, the primary rhetorical mode used is exemplification; this is evident because Orbach
s argument is structured by beginning with an introductory thesis: It could be said that the media has a
great deal to answer for when it comes to how we understand our bodies today (Orbach 244). , which
she attempts to support with body paragraphs containing evidence for her claim. However, while I feel
this rhetorical mode to be the most appropriate for her argument s purpose, I believe that it was
executed quite poorly because of the lack of organization of her ideas and poor choice in sources. In
regards to rhetorical strategy, the use of pathos in her argument is expressed by appealing to the
sentimental idea of motherhood throughout her essay. A particular example of Orbach appealing to
emotion using the concept of the connection between mother and her child is in the passage where she
suggests that the body shaming culture produced by the media causes emotional distress in pregnant
mothers, which transfers harmful anxiety into the womb, where it is to be absorbed by her growing
infant (Orbach, 249). Although she references no facts or statistics to support this claim, thereby
inhibiting the use of logos, this strategy is a very effective in producing an emotional response.
Through the mention of an implied harm to an innocent (the infant), the audience is meant to feel
compelled to protect the defenseless victim from the threat (the toxic media that caused the mother s

truck could pass. This is a very complicated problem: the top of the truck is metal and does not give

force necessary to push the truck out of the tunnel, but this would involve a bulldozer or tow truck.
Both would be hindered by the traffic and would take time. There are many factors besides just the
force necessary to push the truck that affect the solution, with the most important factors being time
and the inability to destroy the truck or the tunnel. The girl succeeded with limited knowledge of

The girl saw that the truck had to get away from the top of the tunnel, but she understood that this was

Essay on Georges Auguste Escoffier
REPORT ON: GEORGES AUGUSTE ESCOFFIER
George August Escoffier, later known simply as Auguste Escoffier, was born on October 28, 1846, in
the small village of Villeneuve Loubet, near Nice, in the Provence region of France. Among the key
figures in his life was his father, who worked primarily as a blacksmith, yet also cultivated tobacco
plants. His grandmother, an enthusiastic cook, was perhaps more responsible than anyone for instilling
in young August an appreciation for cooking.
Young Escoffier attended the local school until age 12, upon which time his father thought it necessary
that his son learn a trade. His father took him to Nice, where he would work as an apprentice in his
uncle s restaurant, Le Restaurant Francais.

In 1920, at the age of 73, Escoffier moved back to Monte Carlo with his wife. His intention was to
retire. However, he continued to work, collaborating and consulting on several projects, including
another casino in Upper Monte Carlo. He died in 1935, at the age of 89, only days after the death of
his wife. Escoffier s most noted career achievements are revolutionizing and modernizing the menu,
the codification of of cooking techniques and the organization of the professional kitchen (Simon,
2001).
I discovered Escoffier when I open Bouchon Bistro Lyonnais, in 1998. I was approached by my
private chef, Thierry Aubert, with a copy of Saveur Magazine, with an article entitled The Bouchons
of Lyon. We traveled to Lyon together, collecting menus from many of the bouchons in Old Lyon.
During that trip I purchased several cook books, one of which was Le Guide Culinaire. It was in that
book that we found most of the recipes for Bouchon s first menu. I have always been drawn to
traditional French cuisine, and this book has been my Bible for years. It was in this book that I learned
about cross utilization of ingredients and sauces. I continue to

The Importance Of The Human Brain
The human brain is the direction for the nervous system. The brain tells the human what to do such as,
it receives the input from the sensory organs, and then sends output to the muscles (Lewis, 2016). The
human brain has responsibilities in the body just like the other organs, but has its own duties to
maintain (Lewis, 2016). However, the human brain makes up 2 percent of the human body weight
(Lewis, 2016). The cerebrum is the largest part of the human brain, and is branched into two different
hemispheres (Lewis, 2016). Individuals also call the two the left and the right hemisphere. The
brainstem is located underneath, and the cerebellum sits behind it (Lewis, 2016). The human brain is
also divided into three different sections which is known as the forebrain, midbrain, and the hindbrain
(Lewis, 2016). Each of the sections have something in common which is fluid filled cavities called
ventricles (Lewis, 2016). There are still more pathways in the future that need to be explored to clearly
under the human brain.
Understanding the Human Brain There are still different pathways to be explored in our understanding
of the human brain due to there is different studies that come as the years progress. One of the
components that will still be open to the question is the several factors that affect the human brain that
causes mental illnesses. The defining of the human brain is complication, and how the complication

Eyewitness Testimony Memory
In the late 19th century research on eyewitness, testimony memory began, psychologists had been
studying memory, and the findings became useful for forensic psychology and law. A central issue
with studying eyewitness memory and testimony is the ecological validity of lab studies. There are
relatively few real world eyewitness memory studies, and that causes problems for determining the
generalizability of findings in eyewitness memory. Coined by Wells (1978) estimator variables are
present at the time of a crime and cannot be changed (i.e. witness characteristics and the type of
offence) and system variables are factors that can be manipulated to affect eyewitness accuracy (i.e.
line up procedures and interview types). The system variables ... Show more content on

Biggers (1972) instructions were given to the jury that said witness confidence should be used to
assess witness accuracy. This statement was highly controversial at the time because there was only a
minor positive correlation between confidence and accuracy far from enough to say it was a
significant correlation. The U.S. Supreme Court outlined five criteria that should be used in the future
for evaluating the accuracy of eyewitness testimony. Preferable methods for evaluating the accuracy
include assessing the suggestiveness of the identification procedure, assessing the instructions given to
the witness, examine the structure of the photo or live lineup and ensure there was no suggestibility or
coercive methods. One criticism of the Biggers criteria is the lack of system variables. Most variables
within the Biggers criteria are estimator variables; which the justice system has no control over. To
reduce some of the problems that have been found with eyewitness memory and testimony, I
recommend not mistaking confidence for memory accuracy and using multiple techniques and
interviewing models to develop more accurate and consistent information (i.e. using the cognitive

The Hound Of The Baskervilles by Conan Doyle Essay
The Hound Of The Baskervilles by Conan Doyle
Conan Doyle is best known as the creator of Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr Watson. His stories
about mysterious detection stories are still being read all over the world.
Arther Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859. He spent a year in Austria before taking a degree
in medicine. He later drew on the method of diagnosis for the basis for Sherlock Holmes s own
deductive methods and Elementary approach to solving mysteries. His work was so popular because at
that time detection was rising.
How do chapters 1 and 2 set in motion the rest of the novel?

Also Holmes points out the teeth marks on the stick, although he only knows what dog they re from
because he seems the dog through the window, this helps show the reader that Watson believes
Holmes knew the type of dog just from its teeth marks, when really it s just because he can see the dog
outside the window. The dog s jaw, as shown in the space between these marks, is too broad in my
opinion to be a terrier and not broad enough for a mastiff. It may have been yes, by jove it is a curly
haired spaniel (page 11).
The language used by the characters is some what different to the language used by people today.
They don t tend to use slang and generally talk a lot posher. Really Watson, you excel yourself
(Holmes to Watson page 8, line 13) People now wouldn t talk like that. Holmes also talks as if he is
sort of top dog around, Watson does talk posh, however he doesn t have the same was of speech as
Holmes.
Conan Doyle also spends time in building tension and suspense by concentrating on the language of
horror. In chapter two, he introduces us to the legend of the Baskervilles and the death of Sir Hugo.
Doyle begins to set his tone for the reader by describing Hugo as a Wild profane godless man . This
tells us that he is beyond the help of good and open to

Shaped Hair
Introduction There is something we all did this morning before we left our house. Can anyone take a
guess? We all looked in the mirror and did our hair. Form the time women are young we are taught
that our appearance is important. When it comes to hair we all go through the same struggle of trying
to find something that will enhance our features. No matter your ethnicity or background we all
through the phase of wanting a new look. Rather we re thinking about cutting or continuing to let it
grow. We contemplate on if we should change the color or do highlights. (Nina Ellis Harvey, Ashely
Doss, Robert Nicks, and Perla Araiza, 2016). As we look in the mirror we constantly wonder if we
would look good with certain hairstyles. Eventually some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Sonnet 138 Analysis
The textual differences between the 1599 and 1609 renditions of Shakespeare s Sonnet 138 subtly
change the meaning and shift the focus of the poem. Most notably, in the 1609 rendition, more
emphasis is placed on their shared complicity and Shakespeare more vividly paints his mistress as an
individual opposed to a third party construct. To begin, note the difference in lines 6 8 of both
renditions: Although I know my years be past the best, / I, smiling, credit her false speaking tongue, /
Outfacing faults in love with love s ill rest (1599) versus Although she knows my days are past the
best, / Simply I credit her false speaking tongue: / On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed
(1609). In the 1599 rendition, Shakespeare admits to knowing he is old while in the 1609 rendition,
his mistress is doing the knowing. By changing the pronouns, Shakespeare makes their deceit seem
more mutual because she actively recognizes his age. Obviously, Shakespeare knows he is old what
matters is how much his mistress knows it. Allowing his mistress to do the knowing heightens her
deceit and by extension their mutual duplicity because the text plainly conveys what she is lying
about. Similarly, Shakespeare s complete rework of line 8 in the 1609 rendition further shifts the focus
by candidly admitting that On both sides the ugly truth is being ignored. In the 1599 rendition, there is
a very vague and ineffective attempt at imagery instead due to the words outfacing and the

Emotional Hijacking Research Paper
Emotional hijacking is the body s natural defense mechanism, it is what triggers the fight or flight
response during a survival situation but it is also what triggers the protective system during less
threatening situations that can either lead to over or under reacting to the conflict. One trigger that I
have noticed that has caused an over reactive response for me is road rage. When I am cut off or stuck
behind people that choose to drive slow in the fast lane but refuse to move over to allow me by I
began driving more aggressively. One strategy that I have tried to use to help me with this is leaving a
little earlier than normal so that I am not rushed for time. Another trigger that I have is over reacting
when I feel I have been treated

Target Audience Analysis Paper
In this paper, we analysed the target audience, big and small differences, content, and ways to improve
the annual report. The Hershey Company s Annual Report and 10K have many differences and few
similarities, where each document is written to communicate financial statement disclosures to its
intended audience.
Targeted Audiences for each Report
The annual report and 10K are composed based on their different audiences. The U.S. Securities and
Exchange Commission s requires every public company to publish their finances in a 10K, and The
Hershey Company is no exception. The purpose of Hershey s 10K is to give a thorough overview of
its business and financial condition. Because the 10K s intended audience is the SEC, the document s
style ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because each document has a separate idea that they re trying to get across to their audience, the
length is dirasticaly different between the two reports. Hershey s 10K Report is 108 pages long, which
is must shorter compared to the lengthy 233 page Annual Report. The 10K report is shorter because its
focus is to present the information and not to beat around the bush. The Annual Report contains more
content than the 10K because needs presentable to the stockholders. Adding the extra length gives the
Annual Report space to connect with their audience in a professional, yet friendly manner. The reports
also differ through the useage of color. The Annual Report uses the colors of brown and silver to
stimulate the thought of Hershey candy. Adding the color makes the report more appealing to the
everyday reader. On the other hand, the 10K report uses no color, sticking to black and white. This
keeps the report professional and presents the information in the simplest way possible. Another way
the documents differ in presenting their big ideas is through the use of pictures, graphs, and charts. A
major difference seen between the reports is the Annual Report s pictures of the board s directors. The
Annual Report also uses bar graphs and pie charts, while the 10K report sticks to general charts and
tables. The different charts and graphs in both reports allow each report to present their

Bob Dyl The Voice Of A Generation
Jessica Jung

Mrs. Heisler
Bob Dylan: The Voice of a Generation No one is free, even the birds are chained to the sky (
BrainyQuote ). Bob Dylan stated this, referring to one of his famous folk songs, Ballad in Plain D .
Dylan s powerful choice of words in all of the different genres of music he produced allowed his
audience to truly connect and get a feel for the stories behind his lyrics. His fame quickly rose due to
his style in music, that he soon became recognized by millions and succeeded in making a multitude
of musical accomplishments. Known as a Civil Rights activist, Dylan took initiative in helping guide
America s society towards constructive change. Bob Dylan left a lasting impact on the ... Show more

A few of Dylan s most famous folk songs at the time were Song to Woody , Blowin in the Wind , and
Masters of War . He was influenced to write Song to Woody during his time spent in folk clubs and
coffeehouses of Greenwich Village, where he met a crowd of other musicians similar to himself (
Dylan, Bob 31 39). This particular song was written as a tribute to his ailing folk musician hero,
Woody Guthrie. Moreover, Blowin in the Wind is a song that was released in 1963 as a part of the
album, The Freewheelin Bob Dylan . According to Dissent Magazine, it was composed as a topical
song that reflected the country s overall mood (Dreier). Dylan allowed his music to be open for the
public to interpret freely. Masters of War is another folk song that contained deeper meanings than
what the lyrics simply suggested. Dylan tackled the theme of men in power as he wrote this during the
time of political change when John F. Kennedy came into power. The genre of folk changed the face
of music during the 1960s, influencing Dylan s literature style.
Dylan s talents of having the ability to compose music in a variety of different genres was evident
through his country songs as well. According to editors Sara and Tom Pendergast, He frustrated his
fans over and over by refusing to stick with any one musical style or personal philosophy ( Dylan, Bob
31 39). However, his compelling music lyrics easily overpowered this feeling of frustration expressed
by the crowd. Dylan s

Significance: The proposed research, which uses Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) methods, builds on Dr. Ahluwalia s existing work with homebound older adults, which seeks to inform oral health policy for New York City home delivered meal recipients in New York City (NYC). The proposed research will focus on working with the Korean community in NYC to understand oral health needs among Korean older adults, and to use the data collected to inform the development of oral health related interventions for this population. A recent review of the oral health literature indicates that there are few studies that document oral health needs among Koreans in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, the goal of this project is to use CBPR methods to collaborate with partners in the Korean community to address oral health among a particularly vulnerable subset of the Korean community older adults who may have significant medical, cognitive and functional co morbidities, and who may find it difficult to navigate the oral and health care systems due to challenges associated with language, transportation and culture. By working with KCS, we hope to improve the visibility of oral health in the Korean community, and to leverage the potential of the collaboration to address oral health in other Korean groups e.g. children and family. CBPR methods are an effective way to achieve this goal because they require working closely with KCS, the community partner, and seek to enhance the capacity of the community, thus enhancing the potential sustainability of future intervention programs. While many students may say they feel safe on campus, some report that there is still a sense of fear; some even say they don t trust their fellow students when it comes to their belongings. It is true that most perpetrators are fellow students, and they are only successful because they know the routines of their fellow colleagues and know the best periods to attack. In the following scenario, Brian and Alex are college sophomores who have been roommates for a year. Brian s course schedule for that semester forces him to be on campus from eight thirty in the morning until almost five o clock in the evening on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. This is the day the world seemed as it stood still. On 9/11, America experienced a major terrorist attack, which hijacked planes were crashed into the World Trade Centers in New York City, crashed into the Pentagon in the District of Columbia, and had a plane crash into the fields of Pennsylvania. There are many theories on what actually happened and who was involved in the 9/11 attack. The most common word is that Islamic terrorists were the main group involved. It is also said that these terrorists were financed by Osama bin Laden s al Qaeda terrorist organization. Which is why he was such a wanted man after the attacks. But it wasn t just the Islamic terrorists who were involved, many say that there were many other Arab nations involved in some way, such as the planning and details. The location of the attacks were skillfully thought out. Each hijacked pilot had a mission to complete. A plan to do major damage in one of the most tratisofic way. The World Trade Center had almost 50,000 people who worked there. That is a huge target to get people s attention. (Barnosky, et al) Palaeontologists characterize mass extinctions as times in Earth s history when the Earth loses more than three quarters of its species in a geologically short period of time. This has occurred 5 times over the past 540 million years, and scientists are now suggesting it is happening a 6th time. We are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction that has the potential to wipe out many species of importance, and humans have a profound impact on it. This essay is aimed to focus on and examine the importance of having a separation of powers and the reasons for having same in the United Kingdom s constitution. We shall further look into the structure of the United Kingdom s constitution whilst assessing its somewhat unclear separation of powers which exist and assess the reasons why the United Kingdom s system of government does not adhere to the doctrine of the separation of powers. The separation of powers is defined as the political doctrine of constitutional law under which the branches of government are divided to prevent an abuse of power. These three branches are the Legislative, Executive and Judicial and are assigned special powers to maintain a check and balance on each other. In this essay, we shall further go on to discuss the roles and functions of each of the mentioned branches of government and the extent to which this defined separation of power is enforced and/or practiced in the United Kingdom s system of government taking into account the traditional structure that has been maintained over the years. Before digging in to a big Thanksgiving feast at my daughter s house, we all took turns saying something for which we were thankful. My grandkids loved the idea so much, that they have continued the practice of naming something they are thankful for every night before dinner. They look forward to it. Then one day last week, while driving home during rush hour traffic I heard a story on the radio about a monk named David Steindl Rast who believes that gratitude is the key to happiness. He was quoted as saying, We all know people who have lots of misfortunes that we ourselves would not want to have, and they are deeply happy, they radiate happiness, he says. Why are they like this? Because they are grateful. It is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy. I had just finished reading a book set in World War I, in which one of the characters was a soldier who served as an ambulance driver. His job was to drive into the middle of the battlefield, pick up wounded soldiers, and take them to the army field hospital. • 14. Immanuel Kant And The Kant Essay Immanuel Kant Lying Chiyane Peterson MCCC Ethics MW 1:30pm Parviz Dehghani Lying the one form of communication that is the untruth expressed to be the truth. Immanuel Kant states that lying is morally wrong in all possible ways. His hatred for lying has made him just assumed that anyone who lied would be operating with a maxim like this: tell a lie so as to gain some benefit. (Landau,pp.171) This is true for a vast number of people, they will lie in order to gain a certain benefit from the lie rather than the truth. It is similar to if you play a game of truth or dare, some rather pick a dare because it would release them from having to tell the truth. However, those who do pick truth still have a chance to lie to cover up the absolute truth.People lie in order to cover who they truly are. Even if you lie to benefit someone or something else, it would not matter to Kant because he does not care for the consequences. If you lie but have a good intention it is not the same for Kant, he would argue that you still lied no matter the consequence that a lie is a lie. While lying, we accuse others for not being transparent. While being hypocrites ourselves, we expect others to be sincere. (Dehghani,Ethics) We know how it feels to be lied to by a person, so in order to not have the feeling returned, we hope the person will be truthful. It first arrived in the U.S. in 1944 through 1945 at a Hospital north of New York City, the hospital called Pawling army air force convalescent. The patients here interacted with farm animals such as horses and chickens. But with many things it took a long time before any data from places like this was collected. Purpose The purpose of this experiment was to determine how different types of milk and cream, with different percentages of fat, affect the height of the resulting ice cream. Background Information Fats are lipids, which are organic compounds composed of hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. Most fat molecules consist of three fatty acid tails and a glycerol. Fatty acid tails are made of hydrogen and carbon, the way that they are arranged determines the type of fat. There are two broad categories of fats saturated and unsaturated. When the ingredients are mixed together, the fat particles are disturbed and broken apart. Air is distributed into the mixture and held in place between the fat molecules to create a smooth texture ( The Science of Ice Cream , PhysicsBuzz). At first, these products are close to room temperature, conversely, the end product is a frozen dessert. To do this, the mixture must be cooled past its freezing point. The ice is what ultimately freezes the cream. However, since the mixture is not just pure water, which freezes at 0° Celsius, the freezing point must be cooler. Freezing point depression is a colligative property where more solute is added to the solvent. In this case, salt is the solute and the ice/water is the solvent. If the concentration of the solution is increased, consequently, the freezing point will decrease to be lower than that of the usual. The new change will then allow the ice to absorb the heat and melt, while transferring the coldness to the ice cream. When the ice constantly comes in contact with the salt crystals, by stirring, churning, or other methods, it becomes cooler because of the interaction between them. By lowering the temperature of the ice and salt mixture, the ice cream is able to harden and take shape because it still freezes at 0° Celsius and it is being cooled down to reach that ... Ester Lucero Essay Cassie Essary Tim Petete Ethnic American Literature November 12, 2009 Angel s Psyche in Ester Lucero One of the most fascinating aspects of any story is the formation of it scharacters. The way the author chooses to describe them, give them personalities, is how the reader will see their lives. A character s psyche and the way he thinks about events around him change the way a reader perceives the story. Authors have an amazing chance to shape and bend a story to fit what they want it to be through the characterization of the people they write about. Since Angel does have a bullet in his groin, and purposefully chose an unavailable girl to fixate on, it makes the reader wonder if the bullet did cause some sort of dysfunction. As the town gossips about the mysterious house that no one has been inside for the past ten years, the secrets that Miss Emily had been hiding in the house is also discussed. The story then picks up before Emily s death when her father dies. After being in denial that her father is gone, she meets a man, Homer, and begins dating him. Shortly after, Emily buys an arsenic and invites Homer to her house, even though he is not the marrying type. The town never see s Homer after that night and rarely sees Emily. From the town of Pullman, a company town south of Chicago to Disney World, attempts to force Utopia have failed, falling prey to the complications of people s personal desires. The Truman Show, directed by Peter Weir, tells us the story of The Truman Show, an elaborate reality show built around the control of one man s life. Christof, the director, has created an entire living city for Truman, the star of his show, and the only one not in on this whole elaborate fakery. Essentially, Truman is living his life in the simulation of a flawless, archetypal American town, for the entertainment of millions of viewers around the world. Christof, along with countless others obsessed with the idea of controlling part of the world to fit their visions of an ideal reality, have deluded themselves into thinking fictional utopias can exist apart from the undeniable constraints of reality. Their fundamental flaw lies in relying on the assumptions of psychological behaviorism, and the belief that they could perfectly condition the behavior of the inhabitants follow the goals of the community. In order for Christof s scheme to work, Truman must be unaware that he s living in a simulation, and be satisfied with the simulated life that s presented to him. Solar power is the process of obtaining the energy from the sun and converting it to multiple uses. It can be used to light, heat, and cool homes for cheaper than electric companies. Solar power is created by using a device called a solar panel. Solar panels are used to soak up the sun s rays to create renewable energy for homes and businesses. Solar power is saved during the daylight so that it can be used during the night. If it is a cloudy day; enough energy can be preserved. If it isn t, the solar panel can still get the energy it needs if the sun s rays shine through the clouds. On a cloudy day, the thicker the clouds the less energy obtained(U.S. Department of Energy,2009). Solar power is mostly used in places with the most sunshine. For example, they are majorly used in places in the United States like California, New Mexico, and Arizona. Another good place to have solar panels is in other countries, especially close to the equator. Close to the equator is a good spot for the use of solar panels because the sun s rays are stronger there. The process of creating the Solar panel is not an easy process. Solar panels are made up of mostly different types of silicon and glass like substances. The process of making them and installing them is costly, but after that they are done, they are fine. • 34. Cosmopolitanism In Kwame Appiah s Things Fall Apart In the novel, Things Fall Apart, power and dignity are very critical aspects of the main character, Okonkwo. These traits, however, were brought up in Okonkwo in the wrong way. Okonkwo suppresses his emotions under a violent image of power and pride. His traits can be demonstrated through the events happening in his life, which include his upbringing of putting hard work and dedication as his first priorities. He acquires a large amount of wealth that he puts towards his family, and expects his children to strive towards the same goal. This expectation represents Okonkwo s defiance of embracing any ideologies that aren t his own. In the novel, Cosmopolitanism, the concept represented is to engage readers to understand the similarities and differences that are shared amongst people in the world. The author, Kwame Appiah, states that cosmopolitanism begins with the simple idea that in the human community, as in national communities, we need to develop habits of coexistence: conversation in its older meaning, of living together, association (Appiah). The main idea is to learn and understand how the people in the world choose to live their lives by accepting all different kinds of cultures. The basic theme that is found in the novel is acceptance. The negative attributes of this essay: its disorderly placement of evidence for her argument, tendency to deviate significantly from its proposed thesis, the author s decision to oversimplify the target of her argument and use of logical fallacies, greatly overshadow the more positive attributes of the essay: its effective use of emotional appeal and its method of getting the reader involved in the argument through the use of rhethorical questions. In Losing Bodies, the primary rhetorical mode used is exemplification; this is evident because Orbach s argument is structured by beginning with an introductory thesis: It could be said that the media has a great deal to answer for when it comes to how we understand our bodies today (Orbach 244). , which she attempts to support with body paragraphs containing evidence for her claim. However, while I feel this rhetorical mode to be the most appropriate for her argument s purpose, I believe that it was executed quite poorly because of the lack of organization of her ideas and poor choice in sources. In regards to rhetorical strategy, the use of pathos in her argument is expressed by appealing to the sentimental idea of motherhood throughout her essay. A particular example of Orbach appealing to emotion using the concept of the connection between mother and her child is in the passage where she suggests that the body shaming culture produced by the media causes emotional distress in pregnant mothers, which transfers harmful anxiety into the womb, where it is to be absorbed by her growing infant (Orbach, 249). Although she references no facts or statistics to support this claim, thereby inhibiting the use of logos, this strategy is a very effective in producing an emotional response. Through the mention of an implied harm to an innocent (the infant), the audience is meant to feel compelled to protect the defenseless victim from the threat (the toxic media that caused the mother s ... The brain tells the human what to do such as, it receives the input from the sensory organs, and then sends output to the muscles (Lewis, 2016). The human brain has responsibilities in the body just like the other organs, but has its own duties to maintain (Lewis, 2016). However, the human brain makes up 2 percent of the human body weight (Lewis, 2016). The cerebrum is the largest part of the human brain, and is branched into two different hemispheres (Lewis, 2016). Individuals also call the two the left and the right hemisphere. The brainstem is located underneath, and the cerebellum sits behind it (Lewis, 2016). The human brain is also divided into three different sections which is known as the forebrain, midbrain, and the hindbrain (Lewis, 2016). Eyewitness Testimony Memory In the late 19th century research on eyewitness, testimony memory began, psychologists had been studying memory, and the findings became useful for forensic psychology and law. A central issue with studying eyewitness memory and testimony is the ecological validity of lab studies. There are relatively few real world eyewitness memory studies, and that causes problems for determining the generalizability of findings in eyewitness memory. Coined by Wells (1978) estimator variables are present at the time of a crime and cannot be changed (i.e. witness characteristics and the type of offence) and system variables are factors that can be manipulated to affect eyewitness accuracy (i.e. line up procedures and interview types). This statement was highly controversial at the time because there was only a minor positive correlation between confidence and accuracy far from enough to say it was a significant correlation. The U.S. Supreme Court outlined five criteria that should be used in the future for evaluating the accuracy of eyewitness testimony. Preferable methods for evaluating the accuracy include assessing the suggestiveness of the identification procedure, assessing the instructions given to the witness, examine the structure of the photo or live lineup and ensure there was no suggestibility or coercive methods. One criticism of the Biggers criteria is the lack of system variables. Most variables within the Biggers criteria are estimator variables; which the justice system has no control over. To reduce some of the problems that have been found with eyewitness memory and testimony, I recommend not mistaking confidence for memory accuracy and using multiple techniques and interviewing models to develop more accurate and consistent information (i.e. using the cognitive enhanced interview model and combined with the Reid model or other models). Also, courts and jurors need to test/check for suggestibility and coercive interview or investigative practices before trials ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 43. Sonnet 138 Analysis The textual differences between the 1599 and 1609 renditions of Shakespeare s Sonnet 138 subtly change the meaning and shift the focus of the poem. Most notably, in the 1609 rendition, more emphasis is placed on their shared complicity and Shakespeare more vividly paints his mistress as an individual opposed to a third party construct. To begin, note the difference in lines 6 8 of both renditions: Although I know my years be past the best, / I, smiling, credit her false speaking tongue, / Outfacing faults in love with love s ill rest (1599) versus Although she knows my days are past the best, / Simply I credit her false speaking tongue: / On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed (1609). In the 1599 rendition, Shakespeare admits to knowing he is old while in the 1609 rendition, his mistress is doing the knowing. By changing the pronouns, Shakespeare makes their deceit seem more mutual because she actively recognizes his age. Obviously, Shakespeare knows he is old what matters is how much his mistress knows it. Allowing his mistress to do the knowing heightens her deceit and by extension their mutual duplicity because the text plainly conveys what she is lying about. Similarly, Shakespeare s complete rework of line 8 in the 1609 rendition further shifts the focus by candidly admitting that On both sides the ugly truth is being ignored.
