Informational Interview With Kelly Galanis
Informational Interview with Kelly Galanis
Some know her as the Red Headed Diva, others may know her as an adjunct professor for the
Communication Department on campus. Others may have seen her in passing at some point
around campus. Kelly Galanis is jack of many trades and is a great example of exploration within
the field of communication.
I found Kelly using LinkedIn one evening. Junior Delgado of the career center had shared one of
her latest posts about a job opportunity on campus. WestfieldState Univestiy Department of

Kelly is currently the Associate Director of Advancement Information and Communication
Services. However, what caught my attention the most was Kelly s consulting company, The Read
Headed Diva.
In 2008, Kelly s idea for The Red Headed Diva sparked. Kelly was featured in Business Wests s
40 Under 40 which displays young business professioanls finding success in their careers. Before
her interview for 40 Under 40, Kelly was asked to bring a prop that best described her. At that
time, Kelly had been doing a lot of data based work and was originally going to bring her laptop
with her. At the last minute, she grabbed a red headed diva doll that she keeps on her shelf. The
doll represents Kelly s personality and her motive to support women everywhere and that All
women can be divas. Kelly s consulting company teaches people and organizations how to use
social media to build a brand or organization. Kelly provides her clients with the proper tools to
build their social media accounts. Kelly holds workshops on public speaking and confidence

Banquet At Dunsinane
Banquet at Dunsinane
In Macbeth the scene of the banquet at Dunsinane shows the guilt of Macbeth, reveals to us the
extent of his madness and marks the suspicion of the Scottish lords. Macbeth shows the audience
the extent of his insanity, rouses suspicion from the Scottish lords and contributes to the
overarching theme of guilt. Macbeth s constant shouting at the apparition shows how far gone he
is. It marks his lack of self control in the face of his guilt, his fear of being discovered and refusal to
come to terms with what he has done. Likewise the lords see this outburst and are clued into
Macbeth s usurping of power by his blaming of others, he makes himself suspicious and tells them
of his murdering Banquo. Macbeth s quilt here develops a theme of guilt in the play
Macbeth shows the Scottish lords that he has bodies in his closet by the way he speaks making
reference to haunting spirits, trying to shift the blame of his actions onto others and by referencing
the murders he has made. In many religions the soul of a body lives on after death and continues
the life of the person, Macbeth possibly believing this in his fit of anger at the apparition infront of
him says ... Our monuments/ shall be the maw of Kites Shakespeare.III.iv.120 121. Kites meaning
vultures, scavenge for food by eating dead bodies. An unprotected corpse could be eaten by them
and thus the soul would die. Macbeth is haunted by the soul of Banquo, which he would have
reason to be haunted by.

Children s Child Welfare Reform Essay
In 1980, about 500,000 children were in foster care, but a series of successful reforms began with
that year s Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare Act which dramatically decreased the number
of children in foster care. But in the early 1990s, with the advent of crack cocaine and an
economic recession numbers went back up. Child welfare advocates said that the foster caresystem
was in need of changes so that children spend less time in foster placements and that America s
child welfare system needed an improvement. Some children in care were separated from their
siblings, others transitioned from one foster care placement to another, never knowing where to call
home. Too many children were being abused in systems that were supposed to protect them. Instead
of being safely reunified with their families or moved quickly into adoptive homes many remained
in foster homes or institutions for years.
In 2014, over 650,000 children spent time in the child welfare foster care system. On average,
children remain in state care for nearly two years and seven percent of children in foster care
remain in foster care for five years or more. The majority of children in foster care are very
young, the average age of children in care is around the age of nine. In 2014, more than half of
children entering the United States foster care system were children of color. While most children
in foster care reside with family in the present time, 14 percent of minorities live in institutions or

Essay On Kennewick Man
When we think of prehistoric things they may think of things of the past, but with the breakthrough
unearthing of the Kennewick Man transformed peoples thought of prehistoric existences. The
Kennewick Man or The Ancient Man is the name given to the skeletal remains of a man found in
Kennewick, Washington on July 28,1996. A pair of bystanders accidentally found the skeleton
remains of the Kennewick Man. With the discovery it has brought up many disagreements about
what to do with the Kennewick man. The question now is who is really responsible for the remains
of the Kennewick Man.
The remains of the Kennewick man are one of the oldest and complete remains ever found. The
estimated 9,000 year old skeleton is described as Caucasoid. After the discovery it was described as
one of the most complete male skeletons ever unearthed in America. The Kennewick Man remains
were the subject of a court battle between researchers who want to learn all they can about The
Ancient One , and the U.S. Army Corps. The Corps wanted to return the Kennewick Man to his
rightful place so that the American Indian tribes can rebury him without the Kennewick Man being
studied on. But under United States law human remains cannot be owned by anyone. Even though

The Foul Reign of Self-Reliance
Collin Kennedy The Foul Reign of Self Reliance My first exposure to the high flown pap of
Benjamin Anastas s The Foul Reign of Self Reliance came in a quiet library at the private
institution where I had enrolled to learn the secrets of education and because I wanted, at the age
of 21, to fulfill my philosophy core and graduate on time. Cute openings aside, Mr. Anastas has a
significant amount of gall calling his private school teacher Mr. Sideways when it seems, to me,
that he is the one with the skewed vision. As I read through his essay the first time, I found myself
growing discontented and distant from the author. As I read through it a second time, I began to
grow increasingly frustrated and outraged at how Anastas twisted... Show more content on

To Mr. Aransas I say, what is wrong with this process? Do you have the same views and beliefs
as you did when you were a seven year old? Hell, do you hold to the same convictions as you did
when you were a college undergrad? I highly doubt it. While it may not be as radical as waking
up one morning and finding you ve shed all your old assumptions about the world, they have
changed over time. What of the successful businessman who one day awakens to find that in a
moment of clarity, his heart has softened and his greed has shifted to giving? He no longer
works towards making money for the sake of wealth, but rather making money to give to those
who need it. There are countless stories of these types of individuals. These are people who
have found a universal truth within them and found their beliefs totally flipped. Is it not
contradictory? It most certainly is, but this does not make it wrong. Where is you re argument
there Mr. Anastasia? There are two paragraphs in Benjamin s essay that I disagree with above all
others. The main one I will get to later in this essay. The first is the fifth paragraph starting, The
excessive love of individual liberty that debases our national politics? (Anastas p. 2) Individual
liberty is the crux of the entire human existence. How can we love this value too much? If any
part of the belief in God or the One is true, it is that He has endowed us with the

Role Of The Media During The Vietnam War
Tan Oguz Instructor: Arjun Subrahmanyan HIST 386C 11 December 2014 Final Paper Role of
the Media in the Vietnam War Vietnam War is a war that mainly differentiates from any other
war in the history of the modern warfare due to the fact that the first time in history the media
was able to act without restrictions and had the opportunity to film and record the war from the
frontline of the combat zone. Besides the political and military decisions taken at the wartime,
media had a impact on changing destiny of the war. In this essay, in order to show the impact of
the media on the war, I will try to examine some of the key events of the Vietnam War, such as the
Tet Offensive, and My Lai Massacre. Were there any misconceptions presented by the media about
the war? Was media responsible of the US loss in Vietnam? Is the power of media exaggerated at
the time of the war? Throughout the essay, these questions will try to be answered in the contexts
of specific events. Before the insertion of ground troops in Vietnam, much of the concern in the
media had been favoured to the political tactics of reinforcing a non communist (democratic)
government in South Vietnam. After the war changed its direction to heavy ground batlle, a change
in coverage also eventuated that the media were more concerned and interested in military
conjuncture (Wyatt 1995). By becoming more interested in military aspects of the war, the media
became more engaged in actual fight scenes and brutality of the

Law Enforcement Of The Police Officer
The amount of effort that is required by law enforcement to persuade compliance by an
unwilling subject is a description of use of force. There is not just one definition for use of force.
A majority of the law enforcement agencies carry policies that define their use of force. Included
in these policies is the actions that an officer can have to undertake in a situation. Whenever an
officer has to use force, they need to understand and know what the appropriate force needed at the
time. To help guide the officers, agencies have a Use of Force Continuum. They must take the
continuum one step at a time. One officer, in the appropriate situation, may jump steps and end up
on the bottom of the continuum. The steps start out as officer presence, verbalization, and empty
hand control. Then the less lethal methods and lethal force. Officer presence is the ideal force to
use in a situation to get it resolved. This step in the continuum uses no force at all. The existence of
the policeofficer being there usually works to prevent crime from happening or continuing. Usually
the presence of the law enforcement officer embraces the uniform and marked vehicle. If an officer
presents himself or herself in a manner that is professional and without an attitude, the officer
presence will be enough. Although some criminals do not care whether the police officer has a
nonthreatening attitude, the officer should always try using no force at all. After officer presence
is employed and it

Comparing Gilgamesh And Candid
A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes
opportunities of his difficulties. (Harry S. Truman) The stories of Gilgamesh and Candid have
underlying themes of optimism. This is because both, Gilgamesh and Candid faced horrible
tragedies in their lives. Through their tragedies though, they both chose to push through these
challenges and make the best out of their situations. They went through horrible trials and when one
would think that they should give up they still try to find the best out if a bad situation. This shows
true optimism because they did not dwell on the bad days. Instead, they made the best of their
situation

place his journey takes him is the twin peaked mountains called Musha. After rushing through the

Siduri warns him that immortality is futile and he should be satisfied with his life and what he has.
He doesn t listen to Siduri and insists on moving forward being optimistic about finding eternal
life. When Gilgamesh arrives to Untapishtim, he demands that he should be granted with eternal
life. Utnapishtim gives him a test, Prevail against sleep, and perhaps you will prevail against
death. (Mitchell, 191) Gilgamesh accepts this challenge, but fails immediately. Untapishtim orders
him to return to Uruk, but he tells Gilgamesh of a spiny plant that grows in the water of the Great

General Description of Edwards SAPIEN XT Transcatheter Heart
Valve.
Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), or Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI),
is a relatively new surgical procedure to combat aortic stenosis. When the aortic valve gets
occluded from a congenital defect, or damage from
calcium or scarring ,1 blood cannot flow through the valve efficiently. This leads to decreased
availability of oxygenated blood to peripheral tissues, and can be harmful or even fatal to patients.
When the malformations of the valve reach a critical point in which the patient s health will be
significantly affected by the lack of proper blood flow,
TAVR is an effective choice to combat stenosis. According to a study done by Samir
Kapadia, MD, TF TAVR (trans femoral transcatheter aortic valve replacement) exhibits a 95.7
percent success rate. Thirty day mortality is limited to 0.4 percent, and stroke rate exhibited a 1.6
percent incidence rate. Follow ups after one year showed a mortality rate and stroke rate of 17.5
percent and 3.5 percent, respectively.2 This data implies that while TAVR is effective, the
procedure still has room to improve. The Edwards SAPIEN

In January of 2013, the Department of Defense set aside the 1994 Direct Ground Combat
Definition and Assignment Rule (Carter, 2015). This takes all restrictions off women allowing all
who meet the qualifications to hold a combat role in the military. The Armed Forceshave opened
over 110,000 positions to women and have set their standards. Anyone, who can meet operationally
relevant and gender neutral standards, regardless of gender, should have the opportunity to serve in
any position (Carter, 2015). The Military Services and United States Special Operations Command

From the beginning of American history men have fought our battles, but little do people know
women have always been in our nations battles. During the Revolutionary War women follow
their husbands to war, many serve in camps as cooks and nurses but had to obtain permission
from the commanding officer if they proved themselves helpful (U.S. ARMY, 2017). From 1782
to 1783 Deborah Sampson served over a year in General Washington s army disguising herself as
a man, until she was wounded; reveling her true gender and being honorably discharged.
Skipping ahead to 1861 the America Civil War, women would serve as administrators of hospitals
as well as cooks and nurses in both the Union and Confederate hospitals. From 1917 to 1918
World War I, women were allowed to join the military.
Throughout the last 2 years of World War 1 over 33,000 women served as nurses and support staff
officially in the armed forces and more than 400 nurses die or are wounded in the line of duty.
Moving forward to World War II 1941 1945, more than 400,000 women serve at home and abroad
as mechanics, nurses, ambulance drivers, pilots, and other non combat roles. Eight eight women
were captured as POW s (prisoners of war). In 1984 Congress passed the Women s Armed Services

government actually plays a vital role in health care but most people look past it. I am sure very
few people have actually sat down and pondered or even have done research to find out the impact
of the government s role in health care. However, I intend to clear up this misconception. The

F, it is important that leaders exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as well as power and
influence when working with co workers because first, all leaders need to be advocates for their
patients and staff members. By doing so, they demonstrate support to their patients and staff
members, which create a good impression in the nursing profession. Second, authenticity can
impact not only the nursing workforce and the profession but also the healthcare delivery
system and society as a whole. He added that as a leader, being authentic to your co workers is
vital to keep a positive work environment, which can decrease high turnover rates and nursing
shortages. Third, the definition of power is different for everybody. For Mr. F, power is a
control on individuals whether it is as a co worker or as a leader. According to Green (1999), an
effective leader tends to use power in a subtle, mindful form that reduces rank differences and
prevents threats to the person s dignity. Lastly, Mr. F believes that influence is a necessary
component to be an effective leader because when leaders influence their team members, they will
quickly endorse and implement decisions that the leaders view required for the workplace. Then, he
added that leadership does not exist without

Relationships In R K Narayan
Human Relationships in R.K.Narayan writing with reference to current scenario To be a good
writer anywhere, you must have roots both in religion and family. I have these things.
R.K.Narayan has depicted himself. Man is a social animal and a man living outside the society is
either a god or a beast . This proverb depicts the importance of society and relations for a human
being. That is why, since the Renaissance Humanism, and for that purpose the study of Humanities
has become a sine qua non for the literary artists. It was established long ago, what a piece of work
is man? and The proper study of mankind is man. All this accounts for an exploration of a

the Audit Committee spent only three to six hours a year overseeing the financial activities of the

The Abolition Of The Brazilian Slaves Essay
The Abolition of the Brazilian Slaves
Slavery in the Americas started with Christopher Columbus at the end of his first voyage, west of
the Atlantic. When Columbus saw the Indians (as he called them) and he thought they would
make great servants to overlords in Europe. The author writes, he promised to bring Ferdinand
and Isabella as many slaves as they required (Nowara 10). This was a suitable proposition because
the lifestyle of slavery was already embedded in the minds of the Europeans during the medieval
times. The Portuguese and the Spanish were already using slaves from Africa while Columbus was
discovering the Americas and the Caribbean. During sometime between 500 A.D 1500; the
Iberian Peninsula became a gateway for slavery after Spanish and Portuguese kingdoms drove out
Muslim kingdoms and battled them in the North of Africa. Another place that was conquered by
the Portuguese was Morocco and the city of Ceuta which was a strait in the peninsula. Giving the
Portuguese control and power of trade routes of gold and slaves. This soon brought the Portuguese
west and down Africa coastline. But African slaves was already well known in parts of west and
central Africa. The author writes slavery was a well rooted institution in the African societies with
which they traded (Nowara 12).
There is proof of trade routes dating before the Atlantic slave routes, coming from the Saharan and
Indian Ocean region. But the Atlantic slavery trade routes had a lot more captives

Improving Financial Disclosure And Transparency
Improving on Financial Disclosure Transparency in the Municipal Bond Market
ISSUE
Today, the municipal bond market holds nearly $3.7 trillion in principal outstanding from over one
million unique issues. This debt primarily finances public projects for the 46,000 local and state
government issuers participating in the market. Unfortunately, exemptions for disclosure
requirements as well as an ineffective regulatory structure cultivated a municipal bond market that,
unlike the corporate equity market, remains opaque.
Improving current financial disclosure requirements and increasing transparency in the municipal
bond market will reduce information asymmetry in the market and may lower borrowing costs and
transaction fees for municipal issuers.
For the purposes of this brief, transparency refers to the degree to which information is publicly
available. In the municipal bond market, this includes quotations of pricing securities and volumes
of transactions.
в‹…Pre trade transparency refers to information about the pricing and size of a security prior to
issue.
в‹…Post trade transparency includes real time data about transactions.
Additionally, disclosure includes any financial information released by issuers.
в‹…Primary market disclosure refers to official statements submitted by issuers.
в‹…Continuing disclosure consists of a variety of financial information about a bond after the
issuance. In general, continuing disclosure data provide an idea of the financial

Importance of Technical Assistance and Back-Up Plan in...
In event planning, problems can and often will arise at the worst possible moment. Technical
difficulties such as those involving AV equipment, internet connectivity and sound systems may
occur. Causes include people tripping over wires, faulty equipment, faulty electrical connections,
or missing components. In the event of a limited site team and the lack of additional equipment,
it becomes necessary to move to Plan B. Check immediately to see if the venue offers any
technical assistance, support, or back up equipment. It is important to consider this, even if it
means incurring expenses. If necessary, accept the financial loss if it means continuation of the
event and preserving customer satisfaction. It is important to do a quick troubleshoot to
determine that the problem truly is what you are assuming it is. Test equipment in other power
outlets, for example, to rule out the possibility that the outlet is the problem instead of the
equipment. If in fact the power source is the problem, equipment can quickly be moved to
another location with adequate power. If a wire or cord is dysfunctional or damaged, seek other
equipment for a possible quick swap. If that equipment is also in use, determine which event
process is most critical and utilize the power cord there first. Once a root problem has been
determined and if no other alternatives are available on site, consider sending a team member
assigned to a non essential task to retrieve the additional equipment. You

Comparing The Casino Royale Book And Movie Comparison
Casino Royale Book and Movie Comparison
Today, there are a lot of movies shot in the spy genre. The special effects amaze with its
inimitability and with each film are becoming brighter and more exciting. In this paper I want to
analyze one of the most impressive and most of the first films about spies Casino Royale filmed by
Martin Campbell and compare it with the eponymous book written by Ian Fleming, which soon
served as the plot for the film. In such way it will be seen how the spy genre have been changed for
decades. Casino Royale is one of the first Fleming s novels and it was released with the absence of
big success in 1953.
The actual plot of the Casino Royale may seem too simple for nowadays audience. In the 1953
novel, 007 is given the mission to defeat Le Chiffre, a SMERSH agent working for the Russians
in a high stakes Baccarat game. This is a situation where the movie has mirrored the novel to the
best extent that it possibly can. When the books were written, the whole world was hip deep in
the cold war which pitted east against west. All the characters are there, 007, Le Chiffre, Rene
Mathis and Vesper Lynd. As the movie depicts Le Chiffre loses $100,000,000 of his clients
money in a botched terrorist attack against Skyfleet s newest airline. In the book Le Chiffre loses
80,000,000 Francs in a botched real estate deal involving brothels in southern France. Both story
lines are fairly similar, his Le Chiffre greed has gotten him into a pickle with his

Taryn Simon Research Paper
Taryn Simon is a photographer who was shot down by Walt Disney because he believes that
photography shuts down the fantasy that guests are expected to uphold while visiting his theme
parks. He went on the say that what is in the parks allow the guests to fantasize and escape
reality. I suppose somehow a real image takes away the instinct mentally to create one s own. I
feel that for business he has a point because Disneyland is supposed to mesmerize a person and
take them on a journey that can not be taken anywhere else. If that image were to change to the
public, it would not be as popular or profitable. On the other hand, I do think photography can
have that same effect on one s mind. Taryn states that she chose to look inward because she
wanted to confront the boundaries of the citizen, self imposed and real, and comfort the divide

Pros And Cons Of Composite Restorations
I would hope that when a dentist watches a video like I saw, red flags would be waving violently
in their mind with some of the opinions displayed. Let s recap. Three dentists walk into a bar...
sorry, walk out of a lecture on tooth colored restorations. After coming together, the three dentists
had radically differing personal views on composite restorations. I couldn t help but compare the
situation between Doctors Bently, Cruz, and Godwin to a situation every car owner in America
faces often. Choosing between a conventional motor oil and a fancy synthetic oil in front of a
mechanic or sales person has many similarities to choosing between the silver fox of fillings,

One example is Dr. Bentley, who in the film has many eye rolling opinions and even some ethical

synthetic oil should always replace conventional oil, only wants the upscale market , and will even
swindle you into thinking synthetic oil always has the advantage, even though she knows it might
not be necessary for your car. Nonmaleficence is an ethical principle of doing no harm. If your
amalgam filling, unattractive as it may be, is still serving the tooth well, then nonmaleficence tells
us don t replace perfectly working amalgams with composite just because it is more modern. What
about catering only to the upscale market? That s a justice offense. What about other patients. Do
they not deserve to have their lower end treatments at your boutique office? The worst ethical
principle offense from Dr. Bentley is with veracity. She outright decrees that she only discusses the
advantages of composite, understands that doing composites means she can do more of them due to
reduced longevity, and hits unconvinced patients with that ubiquitous if you were my family tag

Pathos Banana Facts
Pathos Bananas
Today, I want to talk about bananas. This familiar yellow fruits is nutritious, delicious, and good for
you. But, most importantly, there are a trillion fun facts about it on the internet. Banana Fact:
Americans eat an average of 27 pounds of bananas per person every year, making them the most
popular fruit in the U.S. Banana fact: Research shows that eating bananas may lower the risk of
heart attacks and strokes, as well as decrease the risk of getting some cancers. Banana fact:
Banana farms use extremely harmful pesticides including diazinon and chlorpyrifos, which
when consumed can cause: diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, convulsions, and comas. Banana fact:
Tortoises and manatees off the coast of Costa Rica are facing extinction partly due to the fact
that pesticide runoff from banana plantations kills the algae on which they feed. Now you might

The Graphic Memoir Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
It did not take me very long to get through the graphic memoir, Persepolis not only because it is a
sort of comic book, but because I could not put it down. I chose to read the interview between
Robert Root and Marjane Satrapi instead of the TED talk because I love the raw dialogue
between the two. Through this interview, Satrapi s strong independence and blunt words ring
through loud and clear just as her character in Persepolis. I find her honesty very refreshing, I
have always said, even verbally, orally, that I was nasty. I am very much a fan of imperfection,
actually. This idea of perfection I think really, it s the beginning of the fascism, this idea of
perfection . The womanbeing interview is very much the young girl that hit her principal then said,
oopsy, I didn t mean it!
I can honestly say, that this graphic memoir opened my eyes to the female perspective in Iran
during the time of the Shah to the revolution and beyond. Before reading Persepolis, I had a single
worldview of the Middle East. I thought that women would be treated the same way in most
countries as unequal to a man as it can get. I pictured women unable to have respectable jobs and
never being able to show much more skin than their hands and face. When Satrapi says, The basic
culture is not that the woman is nothing Iran is not Saudi Arabia the women, they are educated,
they are cultivated, they work. You have women that are judges, they are doctors, they are
journalists, they work.

A Brief Description of Sickle Cell Anemia
Adams 1
Dwayne Adams
Instructor: Croshaw
Medical Terminology 1
18, April 2013
Sickle Cell Anemia Sickle cell Anemia is a genetic blood disorder caused by the presence of an
abnormal form of hemoglobin molecules in which the red blood cells loose their disc shape and
become crescent shaped. The shape also known as hemoglobin S . unlike normal red cells which
are usually smooth and malleable, tend to collect after releasing oxygen, and cannot squeeze
through small blood vessels. The organs are then deprived of blood and oxygen. The basic life span
of an affected cell is generally from 1.5 to about 3 weeks, which represents approximately 10% to
20% of a normal cell s life. Because they cannot be replaced fast enough, the ... Show more content

There is no cure for Sickle cell Disease and adults with the trait are wise to thoroughly consider the
possible effects of procreating with another person with the disease.
As in other areas of modern healthcare, advances in technology have facilitated its early detection.
Prenatal tests include Amniocentesis, and chorionic villus sampling. Fortunately some countries
require newborn screening for hemoglobin problems, including Sickle cell Anemia making the
early detection and preventive measures possible
There exists much research and numerous clinical trials to examine possible causes. There
unfortunately seems to exist somewhat of a hesitancy by the generally affected groups to
participate in any abative efforts. The general consensus is one of feelings of mistrust of
government and science in general. Furthering the knowledge of, and finding funding are at present
the focus of several major organizations. Further information can be found in literature, and on the
websites of organizations such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Sickle Cell
Anemia Association (ASCAA), the American Society of Hematology, the National Heart, Lung,
and Blood Institute (NHLB), and many other groups.

Mexican Immigration Research Paper
THE MODERN ERA
In 2014, 35 million Americans identified as Hispanic, of whom 64 percent said they had Mexican
heritage almost 11 percent of the total population. As birthrates for Hispanics exceed those of
Anglos, demographers estimate that by 2042 non Hispanic whites will be a numerical minority in
the United States. At the beginning of this century, there were twenty one states where Hispanics
were the largest ethnic minority.
As a consequence, the nature of assimilation historically a conflicting process for Southwestern
Anglos and Mexican Americans is likely to become less a matter of conformity to Anglo socials
norms and more a process of cultural pluralism.
The concept of cultural pluralism suggests that immigrants should assimilate to American culture
by enriching American traditions with those that other cultures bring with them, expanding the
American cultural landscape of art, cuisine, education, history, law, music, language, medicine and
other aspects of life.
Most recently, studies by the Pew Charitable Trust demonstrate that the number of illegal
immigrants from Mexico entering the United States has actually been declining, resulting in a net
negative number of Mexican immigrants entering the United States. Reasons for this trend include
the Great Recession of 2008, and an improving economy in Mexican, making it more attractive for
Mexicans to stay in Mexico. In addition, stepped up U.S. border enforcement has reduced the

A Comparison Of Nicholas And The American Restoration...
Allen Diles, in A Comparison of Nicholas of Pelhrimov and the Taborite Restoration with Alexander
Campbell and the American Restoration Movement, attempts to relate religious movements that
occurred more than four centuries apart: the Taborite Restoration and the American Restoration.
Further focus is place on the leaders of these movements, Nicholas of Pelhrimov and Alexander
Campbell. A connection between these two men is scarcely made; moreover, many students of
religion are ignorant to the existence of the Taborite Restoration and Nicholas of Pelhrimov. Diles
endeavor to connect these men and the reformation movements they were involved in was
lucrative, as it connected a semi modern movement with a little known medieval movement, but his
presentation of the connection between these movements prevents the connection from emerging in
a manner as compelling as it possibly could have. Diles composes his article in response to the
neglect of the Hussite movement, of which the Taborites formed the radical wing of, in modern
times and the often exclusion of Nicholas of Pelhrimov, an individual whom he feels was critical,
when the Hussite movement is studied. In his thesis, Diles states, Although Nicholas himself is
obscure to Americans and among scholars of the Stone Campbell Movement, the Taborite
movement is rarely mentioned, and examination of Nicholas and his movement reveals striking
similarities in thought, if not in form, between the medieval Taborite reform and that

Discrimination in The Merchant of Venice Essay
Discrimination in The Merchant of Venice Discrimination is a resounding theme in The Merchant
of Venice (Meyers). All of the characters are affected by inequality. This inequity is evidenced
clearly in Shylock, the Jewish usurer. He is treated with scorn and derision by all the characters.
Shylock s misfortunes stem not from poor attributes or even a poor background; it stems from the
fact he is Jewish, and what is more, he is impenitent of that distinction. If he had been more daunted
by Christian influence, he might have been forgiven, as Jessica is subjectively exonerated. He is
not contrite and it is believed that his appalling birth cannot be absolved (Bonnell).

Everyone loves going to marine parks such as SeaWorld and Marineland. They offer many
spectacular shows with dolphins, sea lions and birds. However, the main attractions they offer are
orcas, or as they are better known as killer whales. Highly intelligent and with acute senses of
sight and hearing, they are apex predators. Recently, the possession of orcas has been a big topic of
controversy. Many people believe that the animalsare being mistreated in captivity. Their captivity
limits their freedom and enjoyment. Many orcas suffer from poor physical and mental effects in

captivity all they can do is swim in circles or float for no reason. In the wild, killer whales live in

Violent Media Argument Analysis
My argument synthesis essay
Violent media is good for kids is a fascinating article written by Gerard Jones. He makes an
argument about how many forms of creative violence help many more children than they harm by
giving them a tool to master their rage. At thirteen years of age he explains how forms of violence
have been insightful and impactful for him. Growing up alone and afraid Gerard was taught by
his parents that rage was something to be overcome and that violence was wrong. He was placed
in a small school he felt was wrong for him, but then he withdrew from his loneliness when he
became introduced to Marvel comics. Specifically, a character in the Marvel comics he felt he
could relate to named the Hulk caught his eye and freed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That rage in the rapper s lyrics helped her in a way which she felt she could be powerful and
invulnerable in her mind. That same girl later in her life avoided the use of drugs that sank many
of her peers and succeeded through college as a writer and political activist.
Jones is not making an argument saying that violent entertainment is harmless. He knows it
inspired some people to real life violence. He argues that it has helped many people for the many
people that it hurt before and that it can help even more if people learn to utilize it well. He
believes that parents highest priority with their kids is to prevent them growing up into violent
thugs, but modern kids are more likely to grow up too passive, distrustful of themselves, and too
easily manipulated. He believes that when parents try to protect their own kids from their own
feelings and fantasies, they shelter them not from violence but against power and selfhood. Jones
urges us to consider helping our kids with their fantasies rather than trying to hide them or take
them away.
When life imitates video is another article written by John Leo who opposes the argument given
before by Gerard Jones. John s argument is that If we want to avoid more massacres we should
be taking the social effects of killing games more seriously. He mentions the Colorado Massacre as
suspects Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris used pistol grip shotguns as

The Death Is Not Fair
Death is not fair. Some see death as an enemy to defeat, others as a friend to welcome. Some die
young, others with long life expectancy. Some die quickly and violently, others slowly but
peacefully. Some die naturally without pain. Other, especially people with incurable illnesses,
such as cancer or AIDS, die by inches in great sufferings. Even though medical treatment and
palliative care are advancing at a fast speed, they are often not available or not effective enough
for those terminally ill patients. Besides devastating pain, what is the worst is losing control of one
s life and having to wait for deathin despair and indignity. As a result, an increasing number of
dying patients want more control over the timing and manner of their deaths and want to have the
option of a humane, peaceful death. A substantial majority of citizens believe that competent,
terminally ill patients should have the option of receiving medication that patients could self
administer to bring about a humane and peaceful death if pain and suffering become intolerable,
and a majority of physicians believe such patients should have this option (Tucker). Over the past
two decades, both professionals and citizens have shown a markedly favorable shift towards the
legalization of physician assisted suicide. Yet the translation of that endorsement into a feasible
legislation process has not followed that pace.
Terminal diseases affect people on a dramatic scale. Last year, 56,230 deaths occurred as a

the way social media, specifically Facebook has an effect on users lives. Marche really shows us
how our live in a quickening contradiction and how the more connected with become with social

That fear continues throughout the entire article. Although Marche does say it can be hard to
define loneliness he uses many facts to show that today s people are lonelier than those in the
past. The decrease in confidants that is, in the quality social connections has been dramatic over
the past 25 years. In on survey, the mean size of networks of personal confidants decreased from
2.94 people in 1985 to 2.08 in 2004. Similarly, in 1985, only 10 percent of Americans said they
had no one with whom to discuss important matters, and 15 percent said they had only one such
good friend. By 2004, 25 percent had nobody to talk to and 20 percent had only one confidant.
(106) Marche throughout this entire article is trying to show that social interaction matters, but
that is all stating to die down people are starting to confide in each other less. He continues to
show that being lonely is bad for your health and can causing you to be less healthy or have a less

deciding factor when companies decide how to use their resources and capabilities. Using these
assets to full capacity and effectively well is the common everyday decisions a company like this
has to do. GM must reposition itself as an innovative global competitor in order to survive. The
company has been continually plagued with a host of issues, including lacking internal cost control
and perpetually shortsighted strategies. The company must first and most importantly close the gap
between the perception of its product reliability and the actual quality and innovation of its
vehicles. (Internal Analysis and Recommendations) With these companies always going to be a

The Epistemological Tradition That Best Fits My Own...
Throughout my journey I am discovering the epistemological tradition that best fits my own
perspective. There are many ways in which a person learns; learning can be defined as a change in
behavior due to past experiences. As well, there are different approaches to learning such as;
behaviorism, cognitivism, connectivism and constructivism. Many aspects of my life have formed
my epistemological assumptions such as family, friends, community, education and my own
experiences. Epistemologyis defined as the theory of knowledge, with respect to its methods,
validity, and scope; it is the inquiry of what discerns acceptable belief from opinion (Bates,
2015, section 2.2.1, para 1). I feel that I connect best with experiential cognitivism since I prefer
to experience information before internalizing and relating it with what I know to be true. I will
draw upon my past experiences to illustrate my position as I have come to understand myself as an
experiential cognitivist, which situates within the epistemology of pragmatism. Pragmatism is
defined as a practical approach to problems or matters. As William James states in his book
Pragmatism, A New Name for Some Old Ways of Thinking He (pragmatism) turns towards
concreteness and adequacy, towards facts, towards action, and towards power (para 12, Lecture II
What Pragmatism Means).
Learning as an experiential cognitivist
As an experiential cognitivist I delineate the process of learning through experience, and learning

Factors Associated With Corporate Outsourcing
Due to corporations outsourcing a vast majority of jobs are being sent overseas and the American
people are finding it harder and harder to obtain employment. Specifically but not limited to,
Information Technologies, Human Resources, and Call Centers are being relocated to the overseas
markets. Labor cost in the United Statesis the main reason that corporations are sending jobs to
other countries as well as the corporationwill save additional funds by not having the cost of
benefits paid for the employee in the United States. With the availability for corporations to
outsource, they are looking to place a footprint in the overseas market in order to expand their
business globally. The costs associated with corporate outsourcingare... Show more content on

There are benefits to the corporation, not the employee, to have the work outsourced. Lower
wages are paid to the outsourced country, benefits do not have to be paid to the employees that are
doing the work internationally. American employees, however, take pride in work that is done in
the United States, it is more beneficial to the corporation to have the work done by employees that
care about the work that is being produced by their corporation.
Another critical piece to having work stay within the United States is that there is not a language
barrier with customers. If a customer calls into a business and it is a foreign country that they speak
with, it is frustrating to the customer when they cannot understand what is being said. This could
create a barrier between the customer and the corporation, to the extreme that the customer may
stop doing business all together with them. Customers want to feel that they are the only ones that
the corporation deals with and that they are a top priority. When businesses are outsourced and a
customer cannot put a finger on the place they are at, it makes them feel less important.
Outsourcing does come with its issues, it lessens the control that they have with how some of or all
of their services are delivered. This could have the potential to damage the corporation s reputation
and the liability within the business. Communication is the

The IMportance of Videoconferencing
Videoconferencing has changed the way meetings, distance learning, and telecommuting in today
s world compared to the past. With the help from sites like Skype, Google Hangout, or Apple s
iChat new doors are opening to change the way teaching and businesses are run. From less travel,
to more technology usage, and more retained information videoconferencing is helping in offices
and classrooms across the globe. Videoconferencing has revolutionized the way in which daily
tasks are carried out in the work place. Videoconferencing has improved the way businesses and
schools administer meetings. Having online meetings help with convenience, are cost saving, they
link several sites simultaneously, access remotely located experts, and waste less timeon non agenda
items ( Introduction to Videoconferencing ). Other forms of communication can also be done, but
actually seeing the person can have a huge impact on the way people interpret one another. It is
said that 7 percent of communication comes from spoken words, 38 percent from the tone of
voice, and 55 percent from body language ( Guide to Increasing Video Conferencing Usage ).
Being able to see while having a meetingcan have a large impact on what comes from the meeting.
Conferencing through business can help plan meetings, chat regionally without leaving the office,
and help reach out to remote businesses ( Videoconferencing Guide ). By having meetings set up

Human Trafficking And Its Effects On Human Rights
Human trafficking is an assault on human rights and a violation of one s dignity by means of
forced labor, sex trafficking, bonded labor, and/or domestic servitude. It remains to be both a local
and global issue, occurring in nearly every country, and its networks are vast and formidable to
investigate (Jesionka 2012). Despite government, activist groups and other organization s methods
of intervention, human traffickingis still a major concern with more individuals enslaved now than
ever before. Traffickers are able to coerce, deceive, threaten, and obtain complete control over
their victims. Many of whom are poor, illegal immigrants in search of a job to help support and
provide for their families. In their poverty and desperation, they willingly fall victim to the trade
and end up abused, overworked, underpaid, and most often unable to return home.
Throughout this class we have examined multiple different countries in which human trafficking
still remains an unsolved issue. Such as, Afghanistan s opium brides, Bangladesh s factory
workers, Thailand s child prostitutes, agricultural slaves in the United States, and baby trafficking
in China. How do so many individuals end up trafficked? Why does this still remain such a large
problem in the 21st century? Is it something that is forever ingrained in our society? I chose to
explore these couple of questions and more in hopes of answering the last one. Maybe slavery is
part of our culture and something that will never be

The Song On Darkness On The Edge Of Town By Bruce Springsteen
Oftentimes musicians draw from their own lives, past and present, to find inspiration for their
music. Sometimes they will pick out past experiences or people to write about, and it makes the
music more personal and interesting. In the case of Bruce Springsteen, he grew up relatively poor
in Asbury Park, New Jersey, and frequently talks about the people he grew up with. Because of
Bruce Springsteens civilian background, he was inspired to write Darkness on the Edge of Town,
a concept album about the struggles of the working class. The first song on Darkness on the
Edge of Town, Badlands , is about the struggles that the working class have to face everyday.
Bruce represents the workingman, the blue collar majority because he grew up in a blue collar
family. This song was a hit because Springsteen s fans felt that they could relate to the lyrics. The
protagonist does not ...give a damn/For the same old played out scenes/Baby, I don t give a
damn/For just the in betweens/Honey, I want the heart, I want the soul/I want control right
now... He is tired of the fact that his life seems to be going nowhere, and at this point he does not
care about the in betweens . All that he wants to do is jump start his life and get some sort of
sense of meaning and power. He wants to be in control of his own life and do what he wants to
do, not what he has to do. Despite the fact that the protagonist wants to be in control of his own
life, there are some setbacks. Talk about a dream, Try

Regret In The Scarlet Ibis
Was there a time that Regret came up because someone either did or said something? Regret leads
to life changing decisions. Many people make mistakes, however there will always be regret and
wish they could do something about.
In The scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, the Narrator feels regret, which leads to how he thinks and
treats people.Think before you do something because later you might end up regretting it. The
Narrator in the story was selfish to his brother Doodle. He cared what people thought of him.
Therefore, when he showed selfishness, led him to feel regret. The Narrator shows how

Today s Unrealistic Body Expectations
Modern society portrays good looking men to have broad shoulders, toned arms, six pack abs,
and a small waist while good looking women are viewed to have the characteristics of being slim
and fit, having a small waist, lean hips, and perfect skin complexion. As a result, many people
are affected by our own society s portrayals of good looking men and women that they feel
pressured into doing whatever it takes and going through extreme measures, most of the time,
spending countless hours in the gym trying to achieve that perfect body. Body image is evident
in the gym, as the men are lifting weights they are frequently looking in the mirror examining
every angle of their body making sure no area is lacking muscle. On the other hand, women tend
to partake in the same behavior as men, showing a sense of insecurity about their own bodies,
frequently making trips to the scale to keep track of their weight making sure to stay slim and fit.
Society has a profound effect on many people, making them feel insecure about their own bodies.
The mass medias use of such unrealistic images sends an implicit message to men and women that
to be considered good looking they must partake in unhealthy diets, extreme exercises and
unhealthy body modification enhancers, which in turn can have detrimental effects on one s health.
Such standards of beauty and appearance are almost completely unattainable for most men and
women and most of the models displayed on television and in advertisements is

Summary Of Pirates Of Barbary By Adrian Tinniswood

Section 10
Reading Review of Pirates of Barbary
The Book is written by Adrian Tinniswood. Before I read the book I think pirates are rude and
violent men, after I read the book I think pirates can be romantic and living for pirates can be
jolly. There is always piracy on the sea since the days of commerce. Through the history of Europe,
especially in the seventeenth century, piracy become a part of European history. The pirates
seemed mysterious. Even in this wonderful book, there are not many part describes the pirates, it
counties to be mysterious. I think it leaves room for reader s imagination.
The geographical area in which piracy took place was mainly the Mediterranean. Barbary piracy
became a very threatening thing. There were many Muslim pirates attacked ships, enslaved
crews, plundered cargoes and held numerous captives in their respective areas or countries, but it
was done by the Muslims, there were even Christians engaged in this event as well. That time they
didn t have many job to live for. since piracy can get wealth very quickly. It kinds to become a
culture alone the Barbary Coast. The violence accompanies with many facts, circumstance, history,
ideology, the opportunity to strike. It became their job.
Who are the victims? Christians. The Barbary Coast was Islamic. It was like a clash of religion,
Islamic versus Christians. For Islamic, they thought pirates to a way of jihadist. However, for
Europeans they were tyrannical people who rule the

Ethics in Earnings Management Essays
A company s ultimate goal is to make money and remain a going concern. With that goal in mind,
management must continually report sustained or improved earnings to stakeholders to ensure
constant and new investments in the company s future (Geiger van der Laan Smith, 2010). The
pressure to report positive results can lead managementto engage in earnings management activities
to alter short term results to meet the goals set forth (Geiger van der Laan Smith, 2010). In addition
to the pressures on company management, broad accounting principles introduce ethical issues into
the accounting profession (Gibson, 2011). Merchant and Rockness (1994) suggested the practice of
earnings management introduces the most important ethical... Show more content on

It also includes the generalizations determined from the study concerning earnings management. It
concludes with the long run effects of short term earnings management.
The accounting profession is often seen as being restricted by various rules and regulations,
standards presented by professional boards, and the passage of time. The accounting profession is
regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) (Gibson, 2011). Though much of the
regulation of the profession has been privatized at the direction of the SEC, it is under the
regulation of the SEC that Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) are determined
(Gibson, 2011). Nevertheless, the profession is subject to substantial regulation with numerous
rules, principles, bulletins, and standards (Gibson, 2011). Regardless of the amount of regulation,
the study (as cited in Gibson, 2011) indicates the profession has not been fully restricted to a point
where ethics and precision are not open to interpretation by its members, especially with regard to
earnings management. Even with the enactment of the Sarbanes Oxley Act of 2002 in response to
several cases of financial fraud which increased the regulation of the industry and the attention the
profession receives, the principles with which the professionals are given provide room for short
term results to be manipulated (Gibson, 2011). Within the framework provided under the SEC s
regulation, those within the profession must be

What Role Does Invertebrates Play A Role Of The Environment
Soil is one of the most diverse habitats on Earth and it contains one of the most diverse arrays of
living organisms, but soil is still one of the most poorly researched habitats of our planet.
Invertebrates are the majority of the living organisms found in the soil habitat and even make up
95 97% of all animal species. These animals are characterized and known for lacking a backbone.
There are many living organisms in the soil. This is called biodiversity. Without biodiversity, life
on Earth would be impossible or will be significantly impaired. Biodiversity encompasses all of the
species, food chains, and biological patterns in the environmental system as small as a microcosm
or large landscape or a geographic region (Paoletti). The diversity of soil organisms is largely
determined by a number of abiotic and biotic factors. Invertebrates play significant roles. Animals,
plants, microorganisms and their complex interactions respond to human landscape management,
which help protect biodiversity and for ecosystemhealth. Invertebrates highly complex and intimate
interactions also help give the soil high resistance and resilience. Studies with bioindicators, a
species or ecological community that is so closely associated with particular environmental
conditions that its presence is indicative of these conditions in a particular environment
(Bioindicator), apply biodiversity as a principal tool to evaluate the landscape and the quality and
function and to assess different

Transgender Identity
Transgenders have been a part of the LGBT community ever since continuously growing in
representation most especially mainstream culture. Popular transgender people such as Laverne
Cox and Caitlin Jenner are cultural representatives of this group. Filipino society has also
experienced an emergence of LGBT and gendernon conformity. As reported by the United States
Agency of International Development (USAID), reference was made to transvestism and crossing
gender in the 16th and 17th century with the babaylan (Tan 8). Even if modern Filipino society
tolerates trans personalities such as congresswoman Geraldine Roman, and Jake Zyrus, a trans male
singer formerly known as Charice, there has yet to be true justice and respect for the trans
community in even the smallest of circumstances.
A transgender as defined by Cambridge Dictionary is, someone who feels that they are not the
same gender (= sex) as the physical body they were born with, or who does not fit easily into
being either a male or a female. Given their gender identity differing from their sex assigned at
birth, a lot of the behavioral aspects in their lifestyle coordinate with the gender they identify
with. A specific aspect of this would be the restroom that these trans people use, that being the
opposite gender to what sex they were born as, or in short the gender of which they identify with.
However, it is not as easy as simply entering the comfort room, in fact the rest room to this day still

Liberia Essay
Liberia owes its establishment to the American Colonization Society; founded in 1816 to resettle
freed American slaves in Africa. An attempt at colonization in Sierra Leone had failed in 1815. Six
years later native rulers granted a tract of land on Cape Mesurado, at the mouth of the Saint Paul
River, to U.S. representatives, and the first Americo Liberians, led by Jehudi Ashmun, began the
settlement. In 1824 an American agent for the society, Ralph Randolph Gurley, named the new
colony Liberiaand the Cape Mesurado settlement Monrovia. Other separate settlements were
established along the coast during the next 20 years. Soon, however, conflicts arose between the
settlers and the society in the United States. By the time Joseph Jenkins... Show more content on

The indigenous population, however, was still treated as second class citizens, without voting rights.
U.S. Liberian relations became closer after the United States entered World War II In 1942 the
republic agreed to allow U.S. troops to be based in the country despite the fact that Liberia did not
declare war on the Axis powers until 1944. In 1945 Liberia became one of the original member
states of the United Nations. Following his election in May 1943, President William V. S. Tubman
pursued a policy of national unification and economic development through foreign investment.
The latter policy led to the exploitation in the 1950s of iron ore deposits in the Bomi Hills, located
north of Monrovia. In the presidential election of May 1951, women and indigenous property
owners voted for the first time, but the few thousand Americo Liberians living in the coastal region
still retained control of the government. The incumbent Tubman, candidate of the dominant True
Whig Party, was reelected without opposition. The government had suppressed the Reformation
and United People s parties. Their leaders, supported mainly by residents of the hinterland, were
arrested or exiled following the election. President Tubman was returned to office in the 1955
election, but he narrowly escaped assassination during his victory celebration Thirty people were
indicted for treason; two former cabinet ministers and five others were convicted.

The Pros And Cons Of US Budget Deficit Spending
Unfortunate for some Presidents, they experienced a terrible recession during their terms in the
office. In the modern day President Obama was one example, in 2008 the United States hit her
worst recession in the past sixty years (Schmidt, Shelley, Bardes, 2010 2011). The President took
a drastic move with the support of the Congress and passed the largest stimulus package in the
history of the United States. According to government Authors Schmidt, Shelley, Bardes, the
Congressional Budget Office argued the spending could lead to a federal government budget
deficit of a $1.6 Trillion in 2009 (2010 2011). The debt is still hanging around of about five
percent of the GDP going all the way through 2019 even though the recessionis over the nation still

Marine Animal Research Paper
No other marine animal in the ocean has come to be as feared, or perhaps as well known to man,
as the class of cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes) called, sharks; primarily, the species of shark
known as, the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). The overall body systems and behaviors
of this fishare how it has become so well adapted to its oceanic environment, that it is today
considered amongst the top predators of this planet. Alongside this incredible fish, is a more recent
specimen to the oceanic scene and a completely different class of animals, mammalians. The
marine mammals (cetaceans) in question are better known by their common name, dolphins;
specifically, the bottle nosed dolphins (Tursiops truncates), which are regarded as highly
intelligent animals and are fairly well along in the evolutionary chain; considering their short
history. By looking at the behavioral patterns and morphologies of these cetaceans, one can see
how such a mixed group of animals such as, the mammalians class have been able to adapt so well
to oceanic environments, and even come to thrive, in comparison to the cartilaginous fish that has
ruled the waters for millions of years longer.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 3. Banquet At Dunsinane Banquet at Dunsinane In Macbeth the scene of the banquet at Dunsinane shows the guilt of Macbeth, reveals to us the extent of his madness and marks the suspicion of the Scottish lords. Macbeth shows the audience the extent of his insanity, rouses suspicion from the Scottish lords and contributes to the overarching theme of guilt. Macbeth s constant shouting at the apparition shows how far gone he is. It marks his lack of self control in the face of his guilt, his fear of being discovered and refusal to come to terms with what he has done. Likewise the lords see this outburst and are clued into Macbeth s usurping of power by his blaming of others, he makes himself suspicious and tells them of his murdering Banquo. Macbeth s quilt here develops a theme of guilt in the play Macbeth shows the Scottish lords that he has bodies in his closet by the way he speaks making reference to haunting spirits, trying to shift the blame of his actions onto others and by referencing the murders he has made. In many religions the soul of a body lives on after death and continues the life of the person, Macbeth possibly believing this in his fit of anger at the apparition infront of him says ... • 4. Children s Child Welfare Reform Essay In 1980, about 500,000 children were in foster care, but a series of successful reforms began with that year s Adoption Assistance and Child Welfare Act which dramatically decreased the number of children in foster care. But in the early 1990s, with the advent of crack cocaine and an economic recession numbers went back up. Child welfare advocates said that the foster caresystem was in need of changes so that children spend less time in foster placements and that America s child welfare system needed an improvement. Some children in care were separated from their siblings, others transitioned from one foster care placement to another, never knowing where to call home. Too many children were being abused in systems that were supposed to protect them. Instead of being safely reunified with their families or moved quickly into adoptive homes many remained in foster homes or institutions for years. In 2014, over 650,000 children spent time in the child welfare foster care system. On average, children remain in state care for nearly two years and seven percent of children in foster care remain in foster care for five years or more. The majority of children in foster care are very young, the average age of children in care is around the age of nine. In 2014, more than half of children entering the United States foster care system were children of color. While most children in foster care reside with family in the present time, 14 percent of minorities live in institutions or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Essay On Kennewick Man When we think of prehistoric things they may think of things of the past, but with the breakthrough unearthing of the Kennewick Man transformed peoples thought of prehistoric existences. The Kennewick Man or The Ancient Man is the name given to the skeletal remains of a man found in Kennewick, Washington on July 28,1996. A pair of bystanders accidentally found the skeleton remains of the Kennewick Man. With the discovery it has brought up many disagreements about what to do with the Kennewick man. The question now is who is really responsible for the remains of the Kennewick Man. The remains of the Kennewick man are one of the oldest and complete remains ever found. The estimated 9,000 year old skeleton is described as Caucasoid. After the discovery it was described as one of the most complete male skeletons ever unearthed in America. The Kennewick Man remains were the subject of a court battle between researchers who want to learn all they can about The Ancient One , and the U.S. Army Corps. The Corps wanted to return the Kennewick Man to his rightful place so that the American Indian tribes can rebury him without the Kennewick Man being studied on. But under United States law human remains cannot be owned by anyone. Even though the Kennewick Man remains were discovered and recovered from federal land and is now ... • 6. The Foul Reign of Self-Reliance Collin Kennedy The Foul Reign of Self Reliance My first exposure to the high flown pap of Benjamin Anastas s The Foul Reign of Self Reliance came in a quiet library at the private institution where I had enrolled to learn the secrets of education and because I wanted, at the age of 21, to fulfill my philosophy core and graduate on time. Cute openings aside, Mr. Anastas has a significant amount of gall calling his private school teacher Mr. Sideways when it seems, to me, that he is the one with the skewed vision. As I read through his essay the first time, I found myself growing discontented and distant from the author. As I read through it a second time, I began to grow increasingly frustrated and outraged at how Anastas twisted... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To Mr. Aransas I say, what is wrong with this process? Do you have the same views and beliefs as you did when you were a seven year old? Hell, do you hold to the same convictions as you did when you were a college undergrad? I highly doubt it. While it may not be as radical as waking up one morning and finding you ve shed all your old assumptions about the world, they have changed over time. What of the successful businessman who one day awakens to find that in a moment of clarity, his heart has softened and his greed has shifted to giving? He no longer works towards making money for the sake of wealth, but rather making money to give to those who need it. There are countless stories of these types of individuals. These are people who have found a universal truth within them and found their beliefs totally flipped. Is it not contradictory? It most certainly is, but this does not make it wrong. Where is you re argument there Mr. Anastasia? There are two paragraphs in Benjamin s essay that I disagree with above all others. The main one I will get to later in this essay. The first is the fifth paragraph starting, The excessive love of individual liberty that debases our national politics? (Anastas p. 2) Individual liberty is the crux of the entire human existence. How can we love this value too much? If any part of the belief in God or the One is true, it is that He has endowed us with the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Role Of The Media During The Vietnam War Tan Oguz Instructor: Arjun Subrahmanyan HIST 386C 11 December 2014 Final Paper Role of the Media in the Vietnam War Vietnam War is a war that mainly differentiates from any other war in the history of the modern warfare due to the fact that the first time in history the media was able to act without restrictions and had the opportunity to film and record the war from the frontline of the combat zone. Besides the political and military decisions taken at the wartime, media had a impact on changing destiny of the war. In this essay, in order to show the impact of the media on the war, I will try to examine some of the key events of the Vietnam War, such as the Tet Offensive, and My Lai Massacre. Were there any misconceptions presented by the media about the war? Was media responsible of the US loss in Vietnam? Is the power of media exaggerated at the time of the war? Throughout the essay, these questions will try to be answered in the contexts of specific events. Before the insertion of ground troops in Vietnam, much of the concern in the media had been favoured to the political tactics of reinforcing a non communist (democratic) government in South Vietnam. After the war changed its direction to heavy ground batlle, a change in coverage also eventuated that the media were more concerned and interested in military conjuncture (Wyatt 1995). By becoming more interested in military aspects of the war, the media became more engaged in actual fight scenes and brutality of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Law Enforcement Of The Police Officer The amount of effort that is required by law enforcement to persuade compliance by an unwilling subject is a description of use of force. There is not just one definition for use of force. A majority of the law enforcement agencies carry policies that define their use of force. Included in these policies is the actions that an officer can have to undertake in a situation. Whenever an officer has to use force, they need to understand and know what the appropriate force needed at the time. To help guide the officers, agencies have a Use of Force Continuum. They must take the continuum one step at a time. One officer, in the appropriate situation, may jump steps and end up on the bottom of the continuum. The steps start out as officer presence, verbalization, and empty hand control. Then the less lethal methods and lethal force. Officer presence is the ideal force to use in a situation to get it resolved. This step in the continuum uses no force at all. The existence of the policeofficer being there usually works to prevent crime from happening or continuing. Usually the presence of the law enforcement officer embraces the uniform and marked vehicle. If an officer presents himself or herself in a manner that is professional and without an attitude, the officer presence will be enough. Although some criminals do not care whether the police officer has a nonthreatening attitude, the officer should always try using no force at all. After officer presence is employed and it ... • 9. Comparing Gilgamesh And Candid A pessimist is one who makes difficulties of his opportunities and an optimist is one who makes opportunities of his difficulties. (Harry S. Truman) The stories of Gilgamesh and Candid have underlying themes of optimism. This is because both, Gilgamesh and Candid faced horrible tragedies in their lives. Through their tragedies though, they both chose to push through these challenges and make the best out of their situations. They went through horrible trials and when one would think that they should give up they still try to find the best out if a bad situation. Siduri warns him that immortality is futile and he should be satisfied with his life and what he has. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), or Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), is a relatively new surgical procedure to combat aortic stenosis. When the aortic valve gets occluded from a congenital defect, or damage from calcium or scarring ,1 blood cannot flow through the valve efficiently. This leads to decreased availability of oxygenated blood to peripheral tissues, and can be harmful or even fatal to patients. When the malformations of the valve reach a critical point in which the patient s health will be significantly affected by the lack of proper blood flow, TAVR is an effective choice to combat stenosis. Policy Introduction and Identification In January of 2013, the Department of Defense set aside the 1994 Direct Ground Combat Definition and Assignment Rule (Carter, 2015). This takes all restrictions off women allowing all who meet the qualifications to hold a combat role in the military. The Armed Forceshave opened over 110,000 positions to women and have set their standards. Anyone, who can meet operationally relevant and gender neutral standards, regardless of gender, should have the opportunity to serve in any position (Carter, 2015). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... From the beginning of American history men have fought our battles, but little do people know women have always been in our nations battles. During the Revolutionary War women follow their husbands to war, many serve in camps as cooks and nurses but had to obtain permission from the commanding officer if they proved themselves helpful (U.S. ARMY, 2017). From 1782 to 1783 Deborah Sampson served over a year in General Washington s army disguising herself as a man, until she was wounded; reveling her true gender and being honorably discharged. Skipping ahead to 1861 the America Civil War, women would serve as administrators of hospitals as well as cooks and nurses in both the Union and Confederate hospitals. From 1917 to 1918 World War I, women were allowed to join the military. Throughout the last 2 years of World War 1 over 33,000 women served as nurses and support staff officially in the armed forces and more than 400 nurses die or are wounded in the line of duty. Moving forward to World War II 1941 1945, more than 400,000 women serve at home and abroad as mechanics, nurses, ambulance drivers, pilots, and other non combat roles. The Abolition Of The Brazilian Slaves Essay The Abolition of the Brazilian Slaves Slavery in the Americas started with Christopher Columbus at the end of his first voyage, west of the Atlantic. When Columbus saw the Indians (as he called them) and he thought they would make great servants to overlords in Europe. The author writes, he promised to bring Ferdinand and Isabella as many slaves as they required (Nowara 10). This was a suitable proposition because the lifestyle of slavery was already embedded in the minds of the Europeans during the medieval times. The Portuguese and the Spanish were already using slaves from Africa while Columbus was discovering the Americas and the Caribbean. During sometime between 500 A.D 1500; the Iberian Peninsula became a gateway for slavery after Spanish and Portuguese kingdoms drove out Muslim kingdoms and battled them in the North of Africa. Another place that was conquered by the Portuguese was Morocco and the city of Ceuta which was a strait in the peninsula. Giving the Portuguese control and power of trade routes of gold and slaves. This soon brought the Portuguese west and down Africa coastline. But African slaves was already well known in parts of west and central Africa. Technical difficulties such as those involving AV equipment, internet connectivity and sound systems may occur. Causes include people tripping over wires, faulty equipment, faulty electrical connections, or missing components. In the event of a limited site team and the lack of additional equipment, it becomes necessary to move to Plan B. Check immediately to see if the venue offers any technical assistance, support, or back up equipment. It is important to consider this, even if it means incurring expenses. If necessary, accept the financial loss if it means continuation of the event and preserving customer satisfaction. It is important to do a quick troubleshoot to determine that the problem truly is what you are assuming it is. Test equipment in other power outlets, for example, to rule out the possibility that the outlet is the problem instead of the equipment. If in fact the power source is the problem, equipment can quickly be moved to another location with adequate power. If a wire or cord is dysfunctional or damaged, seek other equipment for a possible quick swap. If that equipment is also in use, determine which event process is most critical and utilize the power cord there first. Once a root problem has been determined and if no other alternatives are available on site, consider sending a team member assigned to a non essential task to retrieve the additional equipment. In such way it will be seen how the spy genre have been changed for decades. Casino Royale is one of the first Fleming s novels and it was released with the absence of big success in 1953. As the movie depicts Le Chiffre loses $100,000,000 of his clients money in a botched terrorist attack against Skyfleet s newest airline. At the beginning of this century, there were twenty one states where Hispanics were the largest ethnic minority. Allen Diles, in A Comparison of Nicholas of Pelhrimov and the Taborite Restoration with Alexander Campbell and the American Restoration Movement, attempts to relate religious movements that occurred more than four centuries apart: the Taborite Restoration and the American Restoration. Further focus is place on the leaders of these movements, Nicholas of Pelhrimov and Alexander Campbell. A connection between these two men is scarcely made; moreover, many students of religion are ignorant to the existence of the Taborite Restoration and Nicholas of Pelhrimov. Diles endeavor to connect these men and the reformation movements they were involved in was lucrative, as it connected a semi modern movement with a little known medieval movement, but his presentation of the connection between these movements prevents the connection from emerging in a manner as compelling as it possibly could have. Diles composes his article in response to the neglect of the Hussite movement, of which the Taborites formed the radical wing of, in modern times and the often exclusion of Nicholas of Pelhrimov, an individual whom he feels was critical, when the Hussite movement is studied. In his thesis, Diles states, Although Nicholas himself is obscure to Americans and among scholars of the Stone Campbell Movement, the Taborite movement is rarely mentioned, and examination of Nicholas and his movement reveals striking similarities in thought, if not in form, between the medieval Taborite reform and that ... • 35. Discrimination in The Merchant of Venice Essay Discrimination in The Merchant of Venice Discrimination is a resounding theme in The Merchant of Venice (Meyers). All of the characters are affected by inequality. This inequity is evidenced clearly in Shylock, the Jewish usurer. He is treated with scorn and derision by all the characters. Shylock s misfortunes stem not from poor attributes or even a poor background; it stems from the fact he is Jewish, and what is more, he is impenitent of that distinction. If he had been more daunted by Christian influence, he might have been forgiven, as Jessica is subjectively exonerated. He is not contrite and it is believed that his appalling birth cannot be absolved (Bonnell). All of the characters are defined through Shylock. Launcelot Gobbo, ... The cycle of hatred and animosity are evident in The Merchant of Venicemost clearly through Jessica s deplorable treachery of Shylock (Blanchard). The theft of his money and jewels was considered by the Christians a credit to her integrity rather than the consummate maliciousness it truly is. She is absolved from any culpability for her betrayal of Shylock; she is praised for her ability to deceive and defraud her father in a culture that sanctioned paternal piety (Picker). She marries the Christian Lorenzo in hopes of improved egalitarianism; she soon discovers that this will not be the case. Her profound guilt and strict upbringing as a Jewish female are revealed in the conversation between herself and Lorenzo: Jessica: I am never merry when I hear sweet music. Lorenzo: The man that hath no music in himself, Nor is moved with concord to sweet sounds, Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils The motions of his spirit are as dull as night, And his affections are as dark as Erebus. • 37. Violent Media Argument Analysis My argument synthesis essay Violent media is good for kids is a fascinating article written by Gerard Jones. He makes an argument about how many forms of creative violence help many more children than they harm by giving them a tool to master their rage. At thirteen years of age he explains how forms of violence have been insightful and impactful for him. Growing up alone and afraid Gerard was taught by his parents that rage was something to be overcome and that violence was wrong. He was placed in a small school he felt was wrong for him, but then he withdrew from his loneliness when he became introduced to Marvel comics. That same girl later in her life avoided the use of drugs that sank many of her peers and succeeded through college as a writer and political activist. Jones is not making an argument saying that violent entertainment is harmless. He knows it inspired some people to real life violence. He argues that it has helped many people for the many people that it hurt before and that it can help even more if people learn to utilize it well. He believes that parents highest priority with their kids is to prevent them growing up into violent thugs, but modern kids are more likely to grow up too passive, distrustful of themselves, and too easily manipulated. He believes that when parents try to protect their own kids from their own feelings and fantasies, they shelter them not from violence but against power and selfhood. Jones urges us to consider helping our kids with their fantasies rather than trying to hide them or take them away. When life imitates video is another article written by John Leo who opposes the argument given before by Gerard Jones. • 38. The Death Is Not Fair Death is not fair. Some see death as an enemy to defeat, others as a friend to welcome. Some die young, others with long life expectancy. Some die quickly and violently, others slowly but peacefully. Some die naturally without pain. Other, especially people with incurable illnesses, such as cancer or AIDS, die by inches in great sufferings. Even though medical treatment and palliative care are advancing at a fast speed, they are often not available or not effective enough for those terminally ill patients. Besides devastating pain, what is the worst is losing control of one s life and having to wait for deathin despair and indignity. As a result, an increasing number of dying patients want more control over the timing and manner of their deaths and want to have the option of a humane, peaceful death. A substantial majority of citizens believe that competent, terminally ill patients should have the option of receiving medication that patients could self administer to bring about a humane and peaceful death if pain and suffering become intolerable, and a majority of physicians believe such patients should have this option (Tucker). Over the past two decades, both professionals and citizens have shown a markedly favorable shift towards the legalization of physician assisted suicide. Yet the translation of that endorsement into a feasible legislation process has not followed that pace. Terminal diseases affect people on a dramatic scale. Last year, 56,230 deaths occurred as a ... • 42. The Epistemological Tradition That Best Fits My Own... Throughout my journey I am discovering the epistemological tradition that best fits my own perspective. There are many ways in which a person learns; learning can be defined as a change in behavior due to past experiences. As well, there are different approaches to learning such as; behaviorism, cognitivism, connectivism and constructivism. Many aspects of my life have formed my epistemological assumptions such as family, friends, community, education and my own experiences. Epistemologyis defined as the theory of knowledge, with respect to its methods, validity, and scope; it is the inquiry of what discerns acceptable belief from opinion (Bates, 2015, section 2.2.1, para 1). I feel that I connect best with experiential cognitivism since I prefer to experience information before internalizing and relating it with what I know to be true. I will draw upon my past experiences to illustrate my position as I have come to understand myself as an experiential cognitivist, which situates within the epistemology of pragmatism. Pragmatism is defined as a practical approach to problems or matters. As William James states in his book Pragmatism, A New Name for Some Old Ways of Thinking He (pragmatism) turns towards concreteness and adequacy, towards facts, towards action, and towards power (para 12, Lecture II What Pragmatism Means). Lower wages are paid to the outsourced country, benefits do not have to be paid to the employees that are doing the work internationally. American employees, however, take pride in work that is done in the United States, it is more beneficial to the corporation to have the work done by employees that care about the work that is being produced by their corporation. Another critical piece to having work stay within the United States is that there is not a language barrier with customers. If a customer calls into a business and it is a foreign country that they speak with, it is frustrating to the customer when they cannot understand what is being said. This could create a barrier between the customer and the corporation, to the extreme that the customer may stop doing business all together with them. Customers want to feel that they are the only ones that the corporation deals with and that they are a top priority. When businesses are outsourced and a customer cannot put a finger on the place they are at, it makes them feel less important. Invertebrates are the majority of the living organisms found in the soil habitat and even make up 95 97% of all animal species. These animals are characterized and known for lacking a backbone. Biodiversity encompasses all of the species, food chains, and biological patterns in the environmental system as small as a microcosm or large landscape or a geographic region (Paoletti). The diversity of soil organisms is largely determined by a number of abiotic and biotic factors. Invertebrates play significant roles. • 55. Marine Animal Research Paper No other marine animal in the ocean has come to be as feared, or perhaps as well known to man, as the class of cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes) called, sharks; primarily, the species of shark known as, the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias). The overall body systems and behaviors of this fishare how it has become so well adapted to its oceanic environment, that it is today considered amongst the top predators of this planet. Alongside this incredible fish, is a more recent specimen to the oceanic scene and a completely different class of animals, mammalians. The marine mammals (cetaceans) in question are better known by their common name, dolphins; specifically, the bottle nosed dolphins (Tursiops truncates), which are regarded as highly intelligent animals and are fairly well along in the evolutionary chain; considering their short history. By looking at the behavioral patterns and morphologies of these cetaceans, one can see how such a mixed group of animals such as, the mammalians class have been able to adapt so well to oceanic environments, and even come to thrive, in comparison to the cartilaginous fish that has ruled the waters for millions of years longer.... The maximum size of the fish is subject to debate, due to rough estimations and claims of larger sightings. (Bright, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
