Paul is sent out from Antioch. He comes to Salamis, and then Paphos. There he presents the gospel to Roman Proconsul Sergei Paulus, and rebukes the Jewish magician Elymas bar Jesus.
Paul travels to Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe in Asia Minor. This lesson warns against elevating leaders, allowing ourselves to be elevated, and clarifying the gospel to avoid misunderstanding.

God delivered Israel with a mighty hand. However, there came a time when the Northern Kingdom of Israel forgot God. They forgot that he led them out of Egypt. They forgot that he drove giants out of their way and enabled them to enter the Promised Land. They forgot and became a sinful nation that silenced God's prophets and those committed to following Him, even leading them astray. They drove God to "Redeemer's Remorse" leading God to regret having acted on their behalf. God's strong judgment reminds us of the importance of living justly and uprightly.

Paul travels to Iconium. Some embrace Paul while others do not. Acts teaches us to avoid Polarized thinking "Us" and "Them" because followers of Jesus are not always outsiders. Acts teaches us to be selective who we engage and look for opportunities for the gospel.
We see the power of grace most acutely in the transformation of our human nature. Only grace can change who we really are. This week we'll look at the transformation of the man named Saul of Tarsus. He would become known as the apostle Paul. How did Saul initially experience God's grace? How was it seen in a Christian "nobody" named Ananias?
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

9. The Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas
and Saul for the work to which I have called
them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid
their hands on them and sent them off.
(Acts 13:2–3 ESV)
12. So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went
down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to
Cyprus. When they arrived at Salamis, they
proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of
the Jews. And they had John to assist them.
(Acts 13:4–5 ESV)
13. When they had gone through the whole island as
far as Paphos, they came upon a certain
magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-
Jesus. He was with the proconsul, Sergius
Paulus, a man of intelligence
(Acts 13:6–7 ESV)
14. Sergius Paulus…summoned Barnabas and Saul
and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas

opposed them, seeking to turn the proconsul
away from the faith.
(Acts 13:7–8 ESV)
15. But Saul, who was also called Paul, filled with the
Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and said, “You
son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness,
full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop
making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?
(Acts 13:9–11 ESV)
16. And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon
you, and you will be blind and unable to see the
sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness
fell upon him, and he went about seeking people
to lead him by the hand. Then the proconsul
believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he
was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop

29. Elymas bar Jesus
Elymas is the “wise man”
Elymas, not Paul breaking Torah
Elymas, not Paul turning away seeker
30. Elymas bar Jesus
Son of the devil
Enemy of righteousness
Deceiver
Making straight paths crooked
31. Woe to those who call evil good and good evil,
who put darkness for light and light for darkness,
who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes,
and shrewd in their own sight!
(Isa 5:20–21 ESV)
32. Say to this people: “‘Keep on hearing, but do

35. Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what
had occurred, for he was astonished at the
teaching of the Lord.

36. Lessons
1. Paul was obedient, while Elymas failed to obey God
2. Paul’s mission remained to the Jews (and Gentiles)
3. Paul’s message is received in the highest places.
37. Lessons
1. Yeshua’s followers obedient while God’s people missed
2. Gospel message is still to the Jews as Gentiles convert
3. Gospel message received in the highest places
39. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood,
but against the rulers, against the authorities,
against the cosmic powers over this present
darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the
heavenly places.

Founded 300 BC
Can you guess WHO it was named after??
By Seleucus, General in Alexander’s army
After Alexander died it became capital of Seleucid Empire
HQ of Antiochus the Great (thus Antioch)
Conquered by Romans in 63 BC
Provincial Roman Capital of Syria
Center of Helenistic Judaism
200,000 residents when Paul
Saul’s qualifications
Exegete of Hebrew Bible
Theologically astute
Roman Citizen
Cross-cultural communicator
Communicator and evangelist
Portable trade
Multilingual
Paul did not change his name
Scholars say people in the ancient world had 3 names
Hebrew, Latin, and possible Greek
Saul, named from the king because they were from tribe of Benjamin
Paul, because it sounded like Saul, and was a proper Roman name
Indicated Roman citizenship
Meant “small”
Fitting
Salamis chief port city 100,000 residents
Important stopover port to Syria
Jewish community
Had a few small synagogues in town
At this point Yeshua believers had not been kicked out
The gospel was not yet censored
We will see how, systematically it becomes censored
And how systematically it is rejected
Believers are kicked out
But throughout time, there have been open doors
Paphos is on the West end of the island
A jumping off point for Asia Minor (Turkey)
Sergei Paulus roman senator from Turkey
Probably very interested in Judaism
Remember there was an intellectual fascination with Judaism
Possibly because of Jewish Law
The LXX had been circulating popularized
Think about British soldiers in India fascinated with Indian belief & food
Interested enough that he had a court Jew
Elymas bar Jesus
Jesus meant Joshua,
Not a theological statement or hint
Court Jew, and wise man
But also a magician
Many Hellenistic Jews practiced
A syncretistic magic/Judaism.
Luke wants you to catch the irony
Elymas is the wise man here
Elymas is breaking Torah as magician (not Paul)
Elymas turns the Roman away from God (not Paul)
Son of the devil: Like Jesus doesn’t mean literally son
Son of God: means proceeding from God
Son of Devil means proceeding, same essence.
Enemy of righteousness, Deceiver,
And making paths crooked are Old Testament language.
Paul clearly has in mind the condemnation of Isaiah
Paul has in mind the condemnation of Isaiah
Who says
What’s clear is Paul is speaking to Elymas, not to Sergei Paulus
He is citing OT Scripture directed to the Jewish person.
Paul was blinded in Damascus
The Syrian Army in 2 Kings was blinded
Jesus heals the blind
Its purpose to force people to reflect on their action
Paul’s mission is still to the Jews.
He hopes that by Sergei Paulus embracing Jesus, Elymas might also convert.
1, Elymas, advisor to a Roman senator failed to convert him to God
Paul came in and succeeded where Elymas failed
Yeshua followers are the true obedient servants of God while Israel’s wisemen failed.
2. Paul’s mission was still to the Jews.
Though Elymas was disobedient, Paul struck him with blindness
To reflect and see Paulus convert
3. Roman Senator converts
1, Elymas, advisor to a Roman senator failed to convert him to God
Paul came in and succeeded where Elymas failed
Yeshua followers are the true obedient servants of God while Israel’s wisemen failed.
2. Paul’s mission was still to the Jews.

To reflect and see Paulus convert
3. Roman Senator converts
Not only do we see the pattern for the church
But we see the development of Paul’s theology
In his letters later.

Story: King of Tara in
Confrontation with King Loiguire on the Hill of Slane in Tara.
The Druids were demonic sorcerers who held the people
In great fear as practitioners of a brutal pagan religion.
The custom was that whoever lit a fire before the king on the Spring Equinox, would be put to death. Patrick lit the Easter fire before the king on the hill of Slane. The people saw Patrick's fire throughout the plain,
The Druid told him: If you do not extinguish this fire, its flames will spread throughout Ireland for all the Irish will turn to Jesus.
King Loiguire ordered 27 chariots to go and seize Patrick. ...
"Seeing that the impious heathen were about to attack him, Patrick rose and said clearly and loudly, 'May God come up to scatter his enemies, and may those who hate him flee from his face.' By this disaster, caused by Patrick's curse in the king's presence because of the king's order, seven times seven men fell. ... And the king, driven by fear, came and bent his knees before the holy man. ...
"[The next day], in a display of magic, a druid invoked demons and brought about a dark fog over the land. Patrick said to the druid, 'Cause the fog to disperse.' But he was unable to do it. Patrick prayed and gave his blessing, and suddenly the fog cleared and the sun shone. ... And through the prayers of Patrick the flames of fire consumed the druid.
"And the king was greatly enraged at Patrick because of the death of his druid. Patrick said to the king, 'If you do not believe now, you will die on the spot for the wrath of God descends on your head.'
"The king summoned his council and said, 'It is better for me to believe than to die.' And he believed as did many others that day.”
And all of Ireland was converted to faith in Jesus.
