Understanding Jesus Gospel of Luke
Purpose of Luke Selections from Luke 1 & 24
Questions: How valid is my experience in understanding Jesus? What is the relationship between the Word of God & my experience when it comes to understanding Jesus? Is one more valid than the other? Is my experience with Jesus valid? or only what is written in the Word?
Luke 1:1-4 Many have attempted to write about what had taken place among us. They received their information from those who had been eyewitnesses & servants of God's word from the beginning, & they passed it on to us. I, too, have followed everything closely from the beginning. So I thought it would be a good idea to write an orderly account for Your Excellency, Theophilus. In this way you will know that what you've been told is true.

Luke 24:45-48 Then he said to them, "These are the words I spoke to you while I was still with you. I told you that everything written about me in Moses' Teachings, the Prophets, & the Psalms had to come true." Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. He said to them, "Scripture says that the Messiah would suffer & that he would come back to life on the third day.Scripture also says that by the authority of Jesus people would be told to turn to God & change the way they think & act so that their sins will be forgiven. This would be told to people from all nations, beginning in the city of Jerusalem. You are witnesses to these things.
Purpose of Jesus Observations on Luke 4
Luke 4:14-30 Jesus returned to Galilee. The power of the Spirit was with him, & the news about him spread throughout the surrounding country. He taught in the synagogues, & everyone praised him. Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As usual he went into the synagogue on the day of worship. He stood up to read the lesson. The attendant gave him the book of the prophet Isaiah. He opened it & found the place where it read:
Luke 4:14-30 "The Spirit of the Lord is with me. He has anointed me to tell the Good News to the poor. He has sent me to announce forgiveness to the prisoners of sin & the restoring of sight to the blind, to forgive those who have been shattered by sin, to announce the year of the Lord's favor." Jesus closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, & sat down. Everyone in the synagogue watched him closely. Then he said to them, "This passage came true today when you heard me read it."
Luke 4:14-30 All the people spoke well of him. They were amazed to hear the gracious words flowing from his lips. They said, "Isn't this Joseph's son?" So he said to them, "You'll probably quote this proverb to me, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' & then say to me, 'Do all the things in your hometown that we've heard you've done in Capernaum.'”
Luke 4:14-30 Then Jesus added, "I can guarantee this truth: A prophet isn't accepted in his hometown. "I can guarantee this truth: There were many widows in Israel in Elijah's time. It had not rained for 3 1/2 years, & the famine was severe everywhere in the country. But God didn't send Elijah to anyone except a widow at Zarephath in the territory of Sidon. There were also many people with skin diseases in Israel in the prophet Elisha's time. But God cured no one except Naaman from Syria."
Luke 4:14-30 Everyone in the synagogue became furious when they heard this. Their city was built on a hill with a cliff. So they got up, forced Jesus out of the city, & led him to the cliff. They intended to throw him off of it. But Jesus walked right by them & went away.
Observations Jesus’ reading of Isaiah in Nazareth is not the start of his public ministry. vv 14-16 –“… the news about him spread throughout the surrounding country. He taught in the synagogues, & everyone praised him. Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As usual he went into the synagogue on the day of worship.”
Observations Jesus acted in the power of the Holy Spirit V14 – “The power of the Spirit was with him …” How was Jesus able to survive a sinless life on earth? Because he was God? Or because he was filled with the Holy Spirit?
Observations The people were overjoyed to hear Jesus’ message & accept the “year of the Lord’s favour”? v22 –“All the people spoke well of him. They were amazed to hear the gracious words flowing from his lips. They said, ‘Isn't this Joseph's son?’”
Observations Jesus observed something about the people of Nazareth that is not immediately obvious in the story vv23-ff – "You'll probably quote this proverb to me, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' & then say to me, 'Do all the things in your hometown that we've heard you've done in Capernaum.'”
Observtions Jesus was right! Everyone in the synagogue became furious when they heard this. Their city was built on a hill with a cliff. So they got up, forced Jesus out of the city, & led him to the cliff. They intended to throw him off of it. But Jesus walked right by them & went away. What is the problem? Apply it today
What is a disciple?

Luke & Discipleship When does someone become a disciple? What are the criteria? Can a person be a Christian and not be a disciple?
Mt 26: 56 All of this has happened so that what the prophets have written would come true." Then all the disciples abandoned him and ran away.
Acts 9:26 After Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples. But everyone was afraid of him. They wouldn't believe that he was a disciple. Acts 11:26 After finding Saul, Barnabas brought him back to Antioch. Barnabas and Saul met with the church in Antioch for a whole year and taught a large group of people. The disciples were called Christians for the first time in the city of Antioch.

Lu 6:1 And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; & his disciples plucked the ears of corn, & did eat, rubbing them in their hands. Lu 6:13 And when it was day, he called to him his disciples: & of them he chose 12, whom also he named apostles;

Lu 9:54 And when his disciples James & John saw this, they said, Lord, do you want us to we command fire to come down from heaven, & consume them, even as Elias did?

Lu 14:26-27,33 If any man come to me, & hate not his father, & mother, & wife, & children, & brethren, & sisters, yes, & his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. And whosoever does not bear his cross, & come after me, cannot be my disciple. … So also, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.
Lu 16:1 And he said also to his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; & the same was accused to him that he had wasted his goods. Lu 17:1 Then said he to the disciples, It is impossible but that offences will come: but woe to him, through whom they come!
Lu 17:22 And he said to the disciples, The days will come, when you shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, & you shall not see it. Lu 18:15 And they brought to him also infants, that he would touch them: but when his disciples saw it, they rebuked them.
Lu 19:29,37,39 And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage & Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent 2 of his disciples, … And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice & praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen; … And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said to him, Master, rebuke your disciples.

Lu 22:39 And he came out, & went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; & his disciples also followed him. Lu 22:45 And when he rose up from prayer, & was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,
Ac 6:1-2,7 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, & said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, & serve tables. And the word of God increased; & the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; & a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
Ac 9:1 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings & slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, Ac 9:10 And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; & to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord. Ac 9:19 And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus. Ac 9:25 Then the disciples took him by night, & let him down by the wall in a basket. Ac 9:26 And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, & believed not that he was a disciple.
Ac 9:38 And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, & the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them. Ac 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, & taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.
Ac 11:29 Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt in Judaea: Ac 13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy, & with the Holy Ghost.
Ac 14:20 Howbeit, as the disciples stood round about him, he rose up, & came into the city: & the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe. Ac 14:22 Confirming the souls of the disciples, & exhorting them to continue in the faith, & that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God. Ac 14:28 And there they abode long time with the disciples.
Ac 15:10 Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? Ac 16:1 Then came he to Derbe & Lystra: &, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, & believed; but his father was a Greek:
Ac 18:23 And after he had spent some time there, he departed, & went over all the country of Galatia & Phrygia in order, strengthening all the disciples. Ac 18:27 And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace:
Ac 19:1 And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: & finding certain disciples, Ac 19:9 But when divers were hardened, & believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, & separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. Ac 19:30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
Ac 20:1 And after the uproar was ceased, Paul called unto him the disciples, & embraced them, & departed for to go into Macedonia. Ac 20:7 And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; & continued his speech until midnight. Ac 20:30 Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them.
Ac 21:4 And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem. Ac 21:16 There went with us also certain of the disciples of Caesarea, & brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an old disciple, with whom we should lodge.

Som 152 Understanding Jesus – Gospel of Luke

  • 1.
  • 2. South East Asian Theological Schools, Inc. SEATS Schools of Mission Discipling Leaders Building Nations 1 Emerging Leaders
  • 4. Purpose of Luke Selections from Luke 1 & 24
  • 5. Questions: How valid is my experience in understanding Jesus? What is the relationship between the Word of God & my experience when it comes to understanding Jesus? Is one more valid than the other? Is my experience with Jesus valid? or only what is written in the Word?
  • 7. Saksi Saksi Saksi Saksi Saksi Sulattungkolkay Jesus Sulattungkolkay Jesus Sulattungkolkay Jesus Sulattungkolkay Jesus Sulattungkolkay Jesus Luke Theolphilus (Lover of God)
  • 9. Purpose of Jesus Observations on Luke 4
  • 14. Luke 4:14-30 Everyone in the synagogue became furious when they heard this. Their city was built on a hill with a cliff. So they got up, forced Jesus out of the city, & led him to the cliff. They intended to throw him off of it. But Jesus walked right by them & went away.
  • 16. Observations Jesus acted in the power of the Holy Spirit V14 – “The power of the Spirit was with him …” How was Jesus able to survive a sinless life on earth? Because he was God? Or because he was filled with the Holy Spirit?
  • 17. Observations The people were overjoyed to hear Jesus’ message & accept the “year of the Lord’s favour”? v22 –“All the people spoke well of him. They were amazed to hear the gracious words flowing from his lips. They said, ‘Isn't this Joseph's son?’”
