norms and views, emerging from their different national contexts. While exploring the two films,
this essay will examine elements of film language or semiotics: color saturation (or black and
white), sound, setting, type of camera angles used; repetition of visual motifs (Metz, 1985). The
two films explored were made in the 1960s. Neither film is American, yet both reveal influences

Perception And Scale Are Permanently Bonded
As human beings it sometimes appears that we are subject to our psychology as opposed to
having control over it. Almost every decision we make, every thought that crosses our minds,
every emotion that affects us has been created by an invisible process by our brain, a brain that

are beholden to forces we do not, and can not control. This was something I felt more than ever
in our past couple weeks of humanities. In this time I learned that perception and scale are
permanently bonded. It is only by coming to grips with scale up close, and far away that we may
find balance in our perspective. We need to see things from far away to understand them, but it is
by looking at them up close that we make them feel humanand real. Without either of these
perspectives we stunt our potential understanding as learners, as thinkers, and as people who
understand what it means to be alive as humans.
It is sometimes hard to see the point of looking at things up close. Why would we deliberately miss
so much of the picture by focusing on just one small piece of it? I believe that an up close

Andrew is to explore the feelings associated and distinguish between rational and irrational
beliefs he possesses regarding these two issues. Andrew is to verbalize the feelings and emotions
he states have had a negative effect in his life leading him to feel inadequate and turning to the
use of mind altering substances. Andrew has had a hard time accepting himself and interventions
has been made to work on attaining a positive self image and Andrew has been invited to use
positive self affirmations. The difficulties in addressing the two issues simultaneously has been for
Andrew to be self accepting of his coprophilia and to realize the process most likely will be slow.
Andrew has agreed to maintain abstinence from all mind altering substances.
2 Humanistic Approach
Andrew has expressed an interest in finding out the causes for the two problematic behaviors and
has showed a willingness to be an integral part of his treatment planning. Andrew has been asked
to self define abstinence for him in regards to coprophilia and to work on eradicating the behavior
if he deems it necessary and proper for him to do so.
III Interviews
During two months Andrew and I sat down and Andrew answered questions about his presenting
problems to form a time line, overview, and hypothesis.
