The Girl I Know At School
There s this girl I know at school, Lindsey, we weren t exactly friends, although, we did socialize quite
a bit in class. She doesn t really have many friends other than myself and about two other people,
which I found weird and sad because she s really cool, high spirited, pretty and really, just an amazing
person in general. Today, though, was the day I got to see a different side of her, the side that she had
never shown anyone. Today at lunch she didn t eat with her friends unlike usual and she ate very little.
When I passed by her with my friends to get to where we usually sit after we eat, she said hi and
walked away right after without giving me a chance to respond, I was starting to get worried about
her. After a few minutes, while ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It hurts and I don t know what to do because I don t know what it is or what s causing it. She started to
calm down. Okay, so, is there stuff happening at home that a teacher or supervisor should probably
know? I won t tell anyone so you don t have to worry about that, you can trust me. No, there isn t, that
s why I can t solve, or even cope with these emotional meltdowns... because there isn t anything
wrong in my life, that I know of at least. Okay, look, I think I know what s wrong. You might actually
have depression, I ve had those feelings before, so I know what they feel like, and I know this sounds
a lot like a bullshit cliché but trust me, it does get better. Well, thanks for trying but I don t think it
will. I m sorry, but I ve dealing with this for too long and it s just getting to be too much to handle.
Really? How long? Why didn t you tell me I could have been there to help you, to support you, to help
you not feel so alone anymore. I m sorry, I couldn t... I just couldn t. I couldn t have risked you
thinking bad or lower about me. She said as she started to cry lightly again. Okay, please stop... I
would never do that and you know it. I told her as I put my hand on her shoulder wiping away some of
her tears. Well, thanks but I still think trying to help me is pointless and a lost cause because I just can
t handle it anymore. I m really sorry to say it, but I ve considered suicide before, but I just couldn t do
it because I know that people

Colin Singleton Character Analysis
Author s purpose John Green s main purpose in writing this novel was to say it s okay to not know
who you are. Colin Singleton was seventeen and panicking because he doesn t know who he is. He
just got dumped his nineteenth Katherine and has fallen into a depression, Colin Singleton is nothing
but a brain without a Katherine by his side. Colin finds out that just because he s a former child
prodigy, that doesn t mean he s going to be a genius in his adult years to come. He has trouble
accepting that because he wants to be remembered as someone important.
Major Characters To begin, at the start of the novel Colin Singleton has dated nineteen girls named
Katherine, because girls named Katherine were his type . He has also been dumped by all of these
Katherine s, except number three. Then, at the end of the novel he s dating a girl named Lindsey , not
Katherine. Which is probably his eureka moment that he s been looking for ever since he was a little
boy. That s probably the biggest character change in this book.
Major Theme The overall theme of the book is finding yourself and who you are. There are several
small themes that are seen throughout the book, one of those is love and another is being remembered.
Colin makes it a priority to have a Katherine because without one, he doesn t know how to function
correctly. Without a Katherine he doesn t even know who he is. He starts having trouble finding
himself after he gets dumped by Katherine number nineteen.

The Rural Economy Of Fiji
Sugarcane industry, today dominates the rural economy of Fiji and employs a large number of rural
population. The first sugar, introduced by the European colonists, was produced in Fiji in 1862 around
the flatland areas near Suva (now the capital city of the country) due to the availability of fertile
alluvial soils (FSC 2014). However, after the first few years the center of production shifted to the
rural western and northern parts of Fiji s two biggest islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu (also known
as the cane belt area ), due to the fact that sugarcane needs dryer areas for better quality of sugar to be
produced (Ward 1965; Mayer 1961). Whilst the majority of the growers are Fiji Indians, the land
belongs to the indigenous Fijians ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sugar contributed 8 percent of the Gross Domestic Production (Fiji Island Bureau of Statistics 2015).
In short, sugar industry is still vital for Fiji s economy and the significance of the industry is still
substantial to Fiji s rural economy (Paresh and Biman 2003).
For the purpose of this essay, the rural livelihoods of Fiji Indian sugarcane farmers will be discussed
in relation to the sustainable livelihood framework. Chambers and Conway (1992, p. 6) defines
sustainable livelihood as:
A livelihood comprises the capabilities, assets (including both material and social resources) and
activities required for a means of living. A livelihood is sustainable when it can cope with and recover
from stresses and shocks, maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets, while not undermining the
natural resource base.
On the other hand, Scoones (2015, p. 11) argues rural livelihood is more than agriculture and farming,
it includes off farm activities such as rural employment and migration as means of links to the urban
areas. This essay, thus, will first explore the livelihood assets of rural farmers, that is, the human,
physical, natural, financial and social capitals. Secondly, it will discuss the vulnerability contexts
affecting the farmers, such as, the shocks, trends and seasonality. Thirdly, this essay will look at the
livelihood diversification strategies for farmers and, finally it will conclude with recommendations for
improving the

How Did Television Shaped American Culture
Television during this time greatly shaped American culture. Televisions were affordable and middle
class America began to invest in them. The technology developed which allowed the networks NBC,
CBS and ABC, to broadcast TV in real time. The moment was realized during the 1952 presidential
election. Broadcasters were able to show the Democratic and Republican conventions live. This was
important because rural America was able to see in real time Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson
running against each other. From 1949 to 1969 the amount of televisions grew from one million to
about 45 million. The amount of TV stations grew from a mere 69 to almost 570. The amount of
Americans with at least one TV grew to 96% of America by 1970.

Les Miserables Movie Guide
Les Miserables is a movie about people with miserable lives. Each of them has a unique story that
portrays why their lives are miserable. The sacrifices and pains of the lead characters in this movie are
intense and breathtaking. Jean Valjean is a convict in a French prison. He s been serving his sentence
for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread for the daughter of his sister that was starving to death and
trying to escape prison as well. Javert a police inspector is keen enough to hover over prisoner 64201

Marius to Cosette s place. There, Marius and Cosette confess their love to each other. And Eponine

Valjean and Cosette but as soon as they arrived the two managed to escape because Eponine screamed

Cosette and leaves to expresses her soliloquy on her own. Her soliloquy was very sad and distressing.
It was about how in love she is with a man but she is all alone. Marius joins an uprising with the other

Design Standards And Design Languages And Their Impact On...
Introduction Design is subjective. There is no question or counter argument to dispute that claim,
people naturally like good design. While it may seem drastic to assume that design is something that
requires immense skill, it s important to know that design encompasses everything that the average
person will do in their life. When it comes to software, design can make or break the success of a
product. Defining what design is and citing examples from important software designers is the first
step to expound why design is so important to modern society. Next, highlighting design standards and
design languages and their impact on the world of design is just as important as describing the process
designers use to amalgamate digital physics and interaction, in order to engender users with a sense of
alluring delight. After that, defining the basic ideas and processes behind designing, from concept to
working golden release, are also required to introduce users to the importance of design. In order to
help explain various design experiences and concepts, such as using design everyday or as a tool, it
can be important to look at a few design languages (in depth guidelines on software physics, motion,
and design). Search Story In my opinion, design is one of the most important parts of human
interaction within both our physical and digital worlds. Anyone can make something, but improving
and constantly reiterating are important factors, necessary to improve user engagement and

students who previous and currently goes to the elementary school. This meeting took place on
September 19th, it represent a time for many of the parents and caretaker of the community to be able

There would be no boundary separating the school and the community. This would come in the form
of allowing parents and caretakers in the community a way to view the teachers that are being hired
and then be able to help with the school in ways that makes parents have to get involved with their
children. The school becomes more than just a place that parents just drop off their children and go
about their day. But it becomes a place that reassure parents that their children are safe, not by just
word of mouth, but by allowing parents to come and get a hands on experience with the school. One
thing that no one really mentioned was the impact that the community center has on the neighborhood.
It is the place that the people in the neighborhood can come to feel safe, the neutral ground of the
whole community. This is the Exosystem of the entire neighborhood, it is the place that all the
individual goes for technology, for food, and for safety. This could be the place that parents can come
and get information about what is going on with the school also, if the school partner with the

Authoritarianism
Left and Right: Two Sides of the Same Coin Throughout history, different forms of government have
been used to control and lead the masses. One of the most powerful of these forms is Authoritarianism
which often aims to consolidate rule for one individual. This is shown through the leaders Francisco
Franco and Mao Zedong, who represent both sides of the political compass, and they both gained
authority using extremely similar methods. By using these two leaders it is possible to see how
whether left or right wing, Authoritarian leaders rise and control power in similar ways.
Authoritarianism is not bound to a single ideology or group, thus is can be used by both left and right
wing politicians. An example of the later is Francisco Franco ... Show more content on

Mao founded the Chinese Communist Party and would later establish the People s Republic of China,
ruling China from 1945 to 1976 (The Asia Society, 1984). Mao had be an avid revolutionist, beginning
at young age at around 16 (Schram, S. R. 1967), which would be crucial later in his life. A pivotal
point before the Chinese Civil War was the setting up of a revolutionary base in 1931 by Mao. This
base was forced out of Kiangsi in 1934 and Mao s followers left with him, thus beginning the Long
March which ended in 1935. After the Long March, Mao had enough military power to overcome the
Kuomintang, or Chinese Nationalists Party, and gain control of China during the Chinese Civil War (C
N Trueman, 2015). During this civil war China received support from Soviet Russia in the form of
arms and military guidance. As Yang Kuisong, a Chinese historian from 1945, stated Soviet leader
Joseph Stalin commanded Marshal Rodion Malinovskyto give Mao Zedong most Imperial Japanese
Army weapons that were captured. Clearly by having the support of a foreign force it aided in the
overthrowing of the Kuomintang. After the civil war concluded, Mao began to purge the land of all
Kuomintang influence. According to Stephen Rosskamm Shalom, of the Arizona State University s

roofing services in the United States, composite, or asphalt, shingles are the least expensive option on
the market. These shingles are also easy to install and repair, a quality that will prove useful if you are
the DIY type. They have an average manufacturer warranty of 20 to 30 years. Ceramic Ceramic tiles
were historically found in the Mediterranean region, but are frequently found in both Southern
California and Florida. They are aesthetically appealing and have a much longer service life than
composite tiles, with up to an 80 year service life. Although they are more expensive than composite
materials, they will add immediate value to your home. Slate Slate tiles are most frequently found on
older buildings in the Northeastern portion of the United States and are an historically significant
roofing material. Slate tiles are the most expensive roofing material on the market, but they offer a

Nancy Mairs On Being A Cripple Summary
Nancy Mairs is the author of On Being A Cripple . The author and I have a lot of traits in common one
of which I will focus in on is STRONG. Mairs writes her essay about her crippled ways and accepts
who she is. In the essay the author states how the word cripple once had a positive meaning to it and
now has changed over the years to a insult people wince when they hear it. But for her, she embraces
it Cripple seems to me a clean word, straightforward and precise. It has an honorable history, having
made its first appearance in the Lindisfarne Gospel in the tenth century. As a lover of words, I like the
accuracy with which it describes my condition: I have lost the full use of my limbs. Disabled, by

I ve lived for many years in West Hove (more than I care to admit); I was born in Brighton and
brought up in South Portslade.
What do you most like about the area?
I like the fact that Hove nestles close to Brighton and remains the quiet neighbour; when I was
younger, we used to go clubbing in both Brighton and Worthing as we were right between the two,
though getting home before night buses existed was always an adventure.
I feel lucky to live between the sea and the South Downs with some fascinating shops in between. My

Luminol Synthesis Lab Report
In the experiment, Luminol Synthesis and Chemiluminescence, the purpose is to create luminol using
the base mediated reduction of 5 nitro 2,3, dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione and to investigate the
chemiluminescence reaction that luminol is known for. 5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione was
reduced using sodium hydrosulfite in a solution of sodium hydroxide under reflux conditions. Acetic
acid was used to precipitate the solid luminol product, later the product was collected through vacuum
filtration. The luminol product emitted a blue light when a dilute solution of it and sodium hydroxide
was mixed with a dilute hydrogen peroxide and potassium ferricyanide solution. The blue light seen
correlates to the excited molecules that are dropping ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione is the compound being oxidized in the luminol synthesis
reaction to produce the phthalate salt. 2. Acetic acid was used to protonate the solution after the 5 nitro
2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione was reduced from NO2 to NH2. If the equivalents of the two
reagents were reversed, NaOH would produce less product since less of the 5 nitro 2,3
dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione would be deprotonated. 3. Cold water was used to rinse the luminol
because it is only soluble in organic solvents, allowing for a better yield of the luminol product. If hot
water were to be used the amount of product would be decreased, because hot water has a higher
tendency to dissolve products, yielding less luminol solid. 4. Luminol is dissolvable in organic
solvents such as, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane but it is insoluble in water. If an organic solvent
were used instead, the luminol would dissolve which would result in the decrease of the yielded
product. 5. The difference between chemiluminescence and fluorescence is the origin of energy used
for the light emission. The energy source for fluorescence arises from the excited electron falling back
to its ground state, emitting light. This energy is emitted as light when it is absorbed at a higher
frequency and then released at a lower frequency visible to humans. The energy source of
chemiluminescence comes from the breaking, forming, or restructuring of chemical bonds in a

Montana wants to keep its healthy population of bats. They are helpful to have around. Just one little
brown bat, one of the most common bats in Montana, can eat 1,200 nocturnal insects an hour. Think

Gender Stereotypes In The Film Milk
True equality means holding everyone accountable in the same way, regardless of race, gender, faith,
ethnicity or political ideology. (Monica Crowley) Two ideas that have been discussed in this gender
unit were, one, we talked about how everyone has a different gender according to how they are. The
second idea was that people shouldn t be defined by their sex at birth, you should be defined by your
personality and how you express it. One main reason that Stephens should teach this unit next year is
because I feel like people, specifically boys, should be more open about their feelings, so it won t
build up and eventually burst open like a bubble. One of the sources we examined was The Mask You
Live In (Jennifer Newson). This documentary showed that boys have tendencies to hide their true
emotion because society marks boys as masculine , tough , and that crying shows signs of weakness.

Stephens should show the film Milk because some people may need to be inspired to fight for
something they believe in as well. One of the sources we examined was the film Milk (Gus Van Sant) .

won for supervisor for San Francisco, although it did take him 4 tries to do it he didn t give up,
because of that it allowed many people of the gay community to come out per say. This ties into my
opinion because Harvey Milk was criticized for being gay, but that didn t stop him from achieving his
goal. People might be intimidated to do things of criticism. In conclusion, one of the main reasons that
Stephens should teach unit next year is because I feel like people need to be inspired to fight for what

Ulcerative Colitis Lab Report
Inflamed tissues from Ulcerative Colitis (UC) patients show increased oxidative and nitrosative
damage, leading to accumulation of mutations and dysplastic progression27,28. Infiltrating leukocytes
from these patients have increased ROS production in basal conditions and in response to different
ligands29. Since TLR4 mediates ROS production in leukocytes22, it is easy to speculate that immune
cells drive pro tumorigenic effects of TLR4. However, bone marrow transfer experiments in our lab
demonstrate that non immune TLR4 participates in development of neoplasia8. Furthermore, we have
shown that epithelial TLR4 activation predisposes to colitis and CAC6. To understand the role of
epithelial TLR4 in neoplasia, our research has focused on the ... Show more content on

Half of the animals will be euthanized on day 28 (before the second DSS cycle), and the other half on
day 56. This will allow us to study ROS production and DNA stability before the onset of neoplasia
(28 days), and once it is established (56 days). We have an extensive experience in this animal
model6,8,10. Power calculations indicate we will need an n=8 mice per group to obtain significant
results31. Colon will be processed for histology and epithelial cell isolation by chelation in EDTA.
Part of these epithelial cells will be kept for RNA isolation, part will be used for ROS determination,

Martin Luther King as a Role Model Everyone has someone that they look up to. It may be a hero or a
role model. Martin Luther King serves as a role model for many African Americans because of his
contributions and fight towards civil rights. King became very popular and touched the lives of many.
According to Robert A. Divine and other authors of America Past and Present, the arrest of Rosa Parks
sparked a massive protest movement that witnessed the emergence of Martin Luther King, Jr., as an
eloquent new spokesman for African Americans. King led a prominent bus boycott in honor of Mrs.
Parks. The boycott successfully ended a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On March 28, 1968, King led a march through Memphis, Tennessee, which, like all his marches, was
intended to have been peaceful and non violent. But thanks to a gang called The Invaders, the march
disintegrated into rioting and looting. King barely escaped the March 28 event unharmed, and swore
to return to Memphis and conduct this demonstration properly with no violence. The date for the new
march was set at April 4, 1968. This time, King would not survive his fateful trip to Memphis.
Additionally, local newspapers criticized King when he announced he was coming back to Memphis
for a second round. Among other comments, the local press criticized him for staying at a white
owned Holiday Inn, instead of the Motel Lorraine, which was black owned. Hoping to avoid further
antagonistic press in wake of the disastrous March 28 demonstration, King s camp switched his

Essay On Mcdonald s Shooting
A miracle NYPD Detective Steven McDonald who was shot 30 years ago and left paralyzed, has
passed away Tuesday afternoon after suffering a heart attack just days ago. McDonald, 59, died
shortly after 1 pm at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, Long Island where he was on In
July of 1986, McDonald was working as an undercover cop in Central Park, where he stopped to
question three suspicious boys. During the stop, one of the boys, Shavod Jones pulled out a .22 caliber
and shot McDonald three times. One of the bullets hit McDonald in his neck, piercing through his
spinal cord and ultimate paralyzing him. McDonald was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and doctors
believed he wouldn t make it through the night. McDonald was left quadriplegic, unable to breathe on
his own, and would depend on a ventilator to breathe for the rest of his life. Eight months after the

Politicians Need to Listen to the People and Legalized...
While the majority of American citizens believe that the drug policies in this country need to be
changed, the politicians of America refuse to recognize the necessity for change. The war on drugs has
clearly been lost and while Americans are for the most part ready to admit this defeat, their elected
leaders are unfortunately unwilling to do so. This difference of opinions, more so than with any other
political issue, marks politician s greatest inconsistency with the desires of the people. The technology
being analyzed here is the laws humans, particularly American politicians, have created that make the
possession and use of marijuana illegal. These laws are in many ways quite detrimental to society and

In this system, a Schedule 1 drug has a high potential for abuse, no currently accepted medical use in
treatment in the United States, and lacks accepted safety for use under medical supervision. Despite
the potentially positive effects that marijuana can have on terminally ill patients, the drug has been
placed under this Schedule 1 classification. Also placed under Schedule 1 are some of the most
dangerous drugs on the streets.
The placement of marijuana among the other drugs as Schedule 1 is absolutely outrageous because
there is no evidence that labels marijuana as having any of the described qualities. This inappropriate
classification is a perfect example of the lack of understanding the government has of the potentially
useful drug. This ignorance, paired with the stubborn ways of the majority of America s politicians,
leads to the absence of progress within the country s drug policies.
The effects the laws have on America s economy and prisons are other detrimental aspects of the laws
prohibiting marijuana possession and use. Not only does enforcing marijuana prohibition cost
taxpayers an estimated $10 billion annually, it also results in the arrest of more than 734,000
individuals every year. This figure is much greater than the total number arrested for all violent crimes
combined, including: murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. This

Communication Skills That Build Winning Relationships
Communication is the key to growth and development of oneself, and relationships with others. Good
relationships are normally forged over good communication skills. We all know of the popular saying,
No man is an island. This means that human beings are social animals needing interaction, no man
was born to be a loner. Without effective communication it would be impossible to survive in this cut
throat world. Therefore, it is a necessity to have good communication skills in order to relate well with
other people.
COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY
There are two main reasons why we communicate:
To gather relevant information from people.
To elicit emotional support to people and in turn build mutually useful relationships.
This is best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This always tends to ruin relationships as it pushes people further and further way from them.
v) They blame themselves for everything
They often think that all failures are their fault. For instance, if a person failed to be promoted in a job
he will say, I knew I should have pitched myself harder and be more assertive. Maybe then I would
have gotten the promotion. vi) They dwell on the past
Polar thinkers find it hard to accept and let go of past mistakes, and concentrate on the future. They
use words such as should and ought. For example, in the case of a failed job interview a polar thinker
would say, I should have spoken more clearly and with much more confidence.
We should realize that the way we think affects how we act, in turn affecting our communication and
relationships. There is no shame in recognizing that we have maxed out our potential. Our happiness
cannot depend on other people, we determine our own happiness.
Steps to effective internal communication
These steps are used to help us grow. They can be summarized in the following acronym:
BE DO ACHIEVE NEW BE DO
a) BE
This being the first stage, one has to recognize their own strengths and also allow room for their
shortcomings. It is important to admit your past mistakes

Cognitive Biases Are An Influence On An Individuals Method...
It is known that cognitive biases are an influence to an individuals method of decision making.
Cognitive biases are the tendencies to think in certain and specific ways which could lead to
systematic reasons to a standard of rationality or good or bad judgement. Decisions are the acts or
processes of deciding out of question or doubt, determination, making a judgement or the act for
making up one s mind to conclude to a selection of choices. Conscious and controlled decisions are

In a study of 79 students, it has been found that the ability to avoid biases as measures of critical
thinking was correlated with more than the traditional laboratory measure of how to measure critical
thinking, and found that the ability to reason logically was due to prior and already experienced logic
conflicts that involved prior beliefs (Stanovich, Toplak West, 2008). It has been said that decision
making can be processed into focused attention to what may be a relevant aspect in how some
decisions can be problematic and damaging to ones self esteem, finances, family life, social life, work
life, and love life (Böhm Pfister, 2008). Heuristics Heuristics are general decision making strategies
that people use which are based on not a lot of information, yet sometimes seem to show a better
outcome of making correct decisions (Shah Oppenheimer, 2008). Heuristics are mental short cuts that
greatly help and reduce cognitive burdens associated with conscious and controlled decision making
(Shah Oppenheimer, 2008). It has been argued that heuristics reduce work in decision making in
several ways (Shah Oppenheimer, 2008). Heuristics offers decision makers the ability to scrutinize
signals and alternative choices in decision making. Heuristics also diminishes work of influential and
retrieving information necessary to making a choice or passing judgement, therefore making it easier

Analysis Of Tea Cake In Their Eyes Were Watching God
In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Tea Cake proves to be affectionate but reckless. Together these
traits create a flawed character. Janie has already developed an increasing proud sense of self, but Tea
Cake furthers her spiritual growth and fulfillment. Instead of stifling her voice he supports it, allowing
her to be herself in a relationship, opening her eyes to new experiences and life skills. Tea Cake s
character and personality cause Janie to learn things about herself she never knew in her marriages to
Logan nor Joe. As said in the novel, So the very next morning Janie got ready to pick beans along with
Tea Cake. There was a suppressed murmur when she picked up a basket and went to work... But all
day long the romping and playing they carried on behind the boss s back made her popular right away.
It got the whole field to playing off and on. Then Tea Cake would help get supper afterwards (Hurston

him, he doesn t instruct her to do so, showing that he really cares about her overall happiness. This is
something different for Janie because throughout her previous marriages she is made to do things.
This gives Janie a sense of equality and independence. However, Tea Cake is reckless as well, in the
novel, it states, He took it up and looked at it of curiosity and put it in his pocket to count it while he
was out finding some fish to fry. When he found out how much

Laws Affecting The Agency Of The United States Postal Service
Laws Affecting The Agency
When it comes to The United States Postal Service, I did not think they would have many court cases,
especially dealing with diversity and mistreatment in the workplace. During my research, however, I
was proven wrong. The Postal Service has had quite a few court cases, while many of them relate to
ethical and discriminatory issues. Individuals have felt that the Postal Service sometimes judge
applicants or workers by their lifestyle or ethnicity. This in turn shows bad representation of personnel
management. One case that shows proof of this is the United States Postal Service v. Aikens. Harold
Aikens, who was a black employee of the USPS, opened a case against his job being that he felt he
was not receiving promotions because of his ethnicity. This is a direct violation of Title VII if found to
be true. According to the USPS, Aikens applied for a promotion for which he possessed the minimum
qualifications, and that the employer selected a nonminority applicant, the parties and the Court of
Appeals have unnecessarily evaded the ultimate question of discrimination... (Bartholet 1982).
Ultimately, the court upheld that Aikens did not in fact present a valid prima faci case, which the
plaintiff creates a belief that the employer discriminated against him, and have evidence that backs up
his claim. Due to the failure to prove that he was being discriminated against due to his race, the case
did not go in his way. Regardless of the judgement, this

Jonathan Swift s A Modest Proposal, By Jonathan Swift
Jonathan Swift was a very crafty writer for his time. Living in 16th and 17th century Ireland must not
have been easy considering the history. During this time there was a famine and England was
watching and waiting for the downfall of this country. Swift was a satirical writer who was very good
at his craft. In A Modest Proposal, Swift introduces a lunatic idea that his country should eat the
children. He is, of course, joking, but he makes a huge statement in saying this. It shows that the
government would rather ignore or blame the problem on someone else rather than fixing the problem
itself. This reading relates to an audience in that Swift is trying to let the people of his time see what a
horrible government the people of Ireland live in. This argument mattered to the people of Ireland and
it should matter today because it shows how a government can say it takes care of its people when it
truly does not. A Modest Proposal, is a very valuable piece because it proves that it just takes one
voice to open the eyes of others, and I believe that Swift did an excellent job using the rhetorical
triangle because his satirical masterpiece made people think about how they were being treated by the
government.
In his first argument, Swift uses the appeal of logos when he says, It is a melancholy object to those
who walk through this great town or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the roads, the
cabin doors, crowded with beggars of the female sex, followed

The Election of 1912
During the Progressive Era, Americans faced the challenge of choosing between four strong
candidates of the election of 1912. Each candidate held concrete platforms that would have different
effects on progressivism. Americans could chose the conservative presidential incumbent William
Howard Taft(R), the New Jersey governor Woodrow Wilson (D), the long time fighter for social
reform Eugene V. Debs (S), or the former president Theodore Roosevelt of the newly formed Bull
Moose Party (Progressive Party). Through this election many steps were taken to change the face of

In the August before the election, the most successful third party in the 20th century was formed. After
Theodore Roosevelt was denied the Republican nomination, he was elected in the newly formed

nothing for me to do but to heed their call and make the race with all my might, regardless of present

unthinkable by becoming in second in the presidential election of 1912. This was the only time in
American history that the Republican Party has come in third in both the popular and electoral vote.
Sidney M. Milkis stated, Ostensibly, the cause of Progressivism—the platform s commitment to direct
democracy and social and industrial justice—gave reform leadership its dignity, indeed its heroic
quality. (Claremont Institute) The Progressive Party s accomplishment proved that third parties can

Stochastic Grinding Process Development For Metal Bonded...
Deterministic grinding process development for metal bonded diamond grinding wheels through
patterned grinding wheel by utilizing micro EDM comprises four main investigation on: (1) material
removal mechanism considering interaction between diamond grains, workpiece, metal bond and
electrical spark, (2) effective pattern geometry design for effective material removal and grinding
performance, (3) application of micro EDM to create the pattern on the metal bonded grinding wheel,
(4) analysing the grinding performance on hard materials such as Inconel and carbide. We believe that
knowledge obtained in these four subjects through journal publications and conference/seminar will
benefit academics in the field of manufacturing technology, surface science and materials engineering.
Especially, establishing a FEM/SPH model which can present different material removal phases,
rubbing, ploughing, and cutting during grinding and mechanical interaction between abrasive grains,
metal bond, and workpiece will benefit the researcher in the field of micromachining by providing
advanced understanding on metal cutting mechanism at micro scale for hard materials. Because
grinding has the most complex cutting mechanism among other machining processes, detailed
understanding of this certainly will help to comprehend other machining processes cutting mechanism

Music And Political Conflict Between Hong Kong And China

Literature Review (based on 3 peer reviewed scholarly sources):
The common assumption throughout the selected sources was to describe the intensification of the
conflict between Hong Kong And Public Republic Of China through contextual data. (Baehr 2001;
Wai Chung Ho, 2000; Wai Chung 2006) In the first place, it is important to have knowledge of the
origin of the political conflict between Hong Kong and Public Republic of China before examining its
relation to the hot flash of local politic song. Baehr (2001) depicts The retrocession of Hong Kong to
China on 1 July 1997 was marked a major consequences for both domestic and Chinese politics. The
focal point is that One country, two systems has become the constitutional principle to Hong Kong,
and remain unchanged for 50 years. Not surprisingly, social problems arise due to the hardship in
assuring everyone to share a common value within the society, which is the matter of identity . To

Analysis Of John Milton s The Of Mere Christianity
Often in life we are faced with choices. They could be as simple as what you should wear that day or
as important as what degree you should pursue. It is the more important choices in our lives however,
that will define who we are and effect our future. C.S Lewis stated in his book, Mere Christianity, that
Every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part that chooses, into
something different than it was before. And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable
choices, all your life long you are slowly turning this central thing into a heavenly creature or a hellish
creature. There are two books, Pilgrims Progress and Paradise Lost, that are perfect examples of this
quote. Pilgrims Progress, by John Bunyan, is about the difficulties that a Christian faces throughout
his journey towards the Celestial City. Paradise Lost, by John Milton, is, on the other hand, a story
about Satan s fall from heaven and His deception of Adam and Eve. These two great works of
literature give clear examples of how choices effect the outcome of one s life. In John Bunyan s
Pilgrims Progress there are several characters whose choices greatly implement their situation. The
main character, whose name is Christian, has striking illustrations of this. Christian is depicted in the
book as a man who has a great burden to be saved, which leads him to journey to the Celestial City to
be with Christ. The first decision he makes, the choice

The Theory Of Management And The Scientific Management...
Theories of management date back to the beginning of times. Every aspect of life contains some form
of management. From managing oneself, to managing employees, to managing an entire corporation,
management is a key part of life. Over time different theories have been developed and have evolved.
Some of the first theories ever explored include the administrative management theory and the
scientific management theory. While both of these theories were studied in depth, I believe that one of
the greatest theories to ever arise deprived from the Neoclassical Theory of Management, the Human
Relations Theory. As previously mentioned, the Human Relations Theory was part of a larger
movement called the Neoclassical Theory of Management and was created to provide a new
environment and approach to employees in their workplace. Its origins date back to the early 1920 s
from a man by the name of Professor Elton Mayo, who began to start the research that would later
bring the Human Relations Theory into play (Perry,Gail).
The Human Relations theory focused more on human relations and their environment as opposed to
previous theories that focused on treating employees more as just an extension of a factory machine.
Before this revolution classical management theorist such as Fredrick Taylor, and Henry Gantt, Frank
and Lillian Gilbreth used a majority of their resources studying exactly how a job was done. They
wanted to find the quickest route of using employees to achieve an end

Over all the world there are software programmable devices for all applications for different uses and

applications, they are called Network Processors. Network Processors have evolved over the years and
have a lot of different types for same and different purposes. Network Processors are used for moving
data from place to another as Routing, Switching, and Bridging, providing Services as Traffic

The Language Of English As A English Language

features by Deterding and Salbrina (2013) as well as Deterding (2015).
2. Data and Methodology
2.1 Materials
The speech analysis uses the Wolf passage recommended by Deterding (2006) and Pratt application
(Boersma Weenink, 2010). The Wolf passage is used to describe English pronunciation as it provides
wide range of English sounds (Deterding, 2006). Meanwhile, the Pratt application is used to listen to
the sound files, view the spectrograms and to measure vowel formants.
2.2 Task The speaker (my self) is expected to read the Wolf passage and do five minute interview with
the tutor.
2.3 Procedure
In a quiet room in Universiti Brunei Darussalam, the speaker was recorded using a voice recorder
performing the task. Prior to recording, I was given few minutes to read the passage. Then, I was
asked to analyze my own recording based on my auditory judgements and acoustic measurements.
The auditory analysis is categorised into 5 features (See table 1) and the acoustic analysis is classified
into 2 features (See table 2). The auditory analysis is carried out by listening to the sounds and the
result is based on my final auditory judgement and visual examination of the

Hollywood Comparison Of Pride And Prejudice
Jane Austen s famous novel Pride and Prejudice has had many film adaptations over the years. Two of
the most popular are the 1995 miniseries, and the 2005 Hollywood film. Both of these films have
many similarities, as well as many differences, and they both have strong points when representing the
novel and the Regency Period. However, the 1995 miniseries takes the cake when it comes to
accuracy. The miniseries is much longer than the movie, and as such, it gives more time for the
characters to grow and develop. The movie feels much more rushed; the pacing is too fast. The movie
also gives a more modern feel about love and romance. It is far more dramatic, and overly emotional,
such as the initial proposal between Darcy and Elizabeth. It took place out in the open, on a rainy day,
rather than privately in a home. The movie Elizabeth is more sensational and exciting, shouting her
emotions, rather than explaining them in a calm and collected manner like 1995 Elizabeth. ... Show

Not counting Knightley s emotional outbursts, both Elizabeths were wonderful. They were both witty,
and feisty; more independent and intelligent than many of the other female role. Darcy was just as
reserved and proud. Mrs. Bennet and Lydia managed to be extremely grating and annoying in each
film, and Mr. Bennet just as subtly funny with his sarcasm. Both Janes are shy, sweet, and kind
(though 2005 Jane had more of a personality). Mr. Collins, unfortunately, is just as cringe worthy and
disgusting. Both adaptations share much of the same dialogue, especially when it comes from

Public Victory
Why is it important to master private victory before public victory? The victories you make for
yourself are a requirement before you are able to make any progress toward being better with others.
As the book said, you need to get your act together before you can be a team player. One example
being productivity, it gets you in the habit of getting the work you need to be done before going on to
the less pressing matters. Getting rid of common bad habits is a big step. Reacting and blaming issues
on your parents, friends, or even the government won t help you around others. Taking responsibility
and assessing yourself before others is a necessity if you are going to be, for example, working on a
team to develop the new popular app. Overall,

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Employees
5.3 .2 Disadvantages
Apart from the advantages offered by captives, there are some factors that limit captive expected
performance.
These include:
Lack of market co operation.
Lack of adequate statistics.
Government control.
Insurance nationalism.
Tied up capital.
Reinsurance cost.
While companies form captives with the initial motive of underwriting its parent s risks, they are
likely to need the cooperation of the market. Sometime market co operation is very difficult to get,
especially in a very difficult insurance market environment where the possibility of creating a parent
company is either not available or it is possible only at exorbitant cost.
Also, if the risk being put into a captive is of an uninsurable nature ... Show more content on

The growth of captives has been gradual in the early stage until the 1960s, and 1970s, when a
substantial expansion took place. The growth may be seen as a clear evidence of the demand by
corporations and institutions for a greater level of cost efficiency and response to new problems of risk
management.
The coming of captives brought significant changes in the business environment of risk management
and even greater changes are envisaged to occur in the future. The changes captives brought along
have affected many including commercial insurers and reinsurers, government bodies, the operation of
insurance agents and brokers in the distribution systems for insurance. The effects are felt in the
competitive pressure experienced by the traditional insurance market brought about by captive
presence, which has brought about important underwriting changes among the commercial insurers.
The current method of rate making by commercial insurers is altered significantly because of the
growing importance of captive, since current rating classes now tend to be broad, permitting the
average insurer to operate in a fairly level and stable rate structure across industries. Thus, firms with
relatively favourable loss experience are contributing to losses of those with poorer experience.
Captives constituted a big threat for the conventional insurance because they have a lot going for
them. The traditional insurance market did not welcome captive movement because it saw the
movement as a threat to its share of the insurance market. They were made to accept captives when
they realised that many businesses were flourishing as a result of captive activities and they benefited
directly and indirect from those

Film Analysis Of The Movie The Bride Of Frankenstein
Making a good movie is easy but making a great movie is hard. As I watched a short clip from the
movie The Bride of Frankenstein I watched how the acting, plot, lighting, camera work, and script all
made this film come to life. This movie was made in 1935 yet it is still so compelling to watch
because it is successful with the important components of a movie. The first thing I noticed about the
short clip was the lighting. As a photographer lighting is the most important thing about pictures and
films. I realized that the whole movie was very dark for the most part. As I watched the short clip I
saw harsh shadows on the background or on their faces which gave a mysterious feeling. As a viewer
it came off creepy, and kept thinking was something about to pop out? The lighting was great when
Pretorius says to Dr. Frankenstein You are responsible for all the murders, there is a dark shadow on
Dr. Frankenstein. As for Pretorius it seems like he has a halo of light around him. I have a feeling that
the lightening in this conversation was intentional. Dr. Frankenstein is looked down, dark, and evil
because he murdered people. While in this same conversation it seems like Pretorius is the good guy
in this situation even though they both do not seem very good. All in all, the lighting was very
intentional. If they put soft/ airy lighting in this film, I do not think the message would come across
and it would not be as interesting than it was. Acting and script go hand on hand

The Watts Riots
Provided the unofficial definition, majority of the United States could easily guess the word: The
slums outside of Los Angeles. This area is very poor and revolves around gang violence, sex and drug
dealing. That s correct, you guessed it right! It s the infamous Compton. The city that everyone has
heard in the news or in a song at one point or another. This definition was taken from Urban
Dictionary, a site that allows anyone to define specific words and terms. It is easy to see that Compton
is often related with drugs, crime and gangs, but the general public fails to realize the truth behind the
suburb. The smaller Los Angeles district is filled with hard working people that have been
disenfranchised and defined as numbers and statistics. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tiny Compton, in response, made a large mistake by raising their property and school taxes and they
did a fantastic job at this and exceeded almost all other L.A towns during the time. Yikes. Fortunately,
this did not stop people from relocating there during World War II. Schools became so crowded,
understaffed and obtained an inadequate amount of resources making it evident that the system was
failing. When the schools funding became nearly forty percent from local tax payer s dollars in the
mid sixties and early seventies, many fled the scene and moved to an area with lower taxes, but the
blacks remained. At this point, Compton was termed as the Black Beverly Hills , but this all began to
go downhill after the riots in 1965. Drug and juvenile arrests reached an all time high during the 1960
s and in 1969, the city had the highest crime rate in the state of California. In Taking Compton
National , written by Ryan Reft, he states, Shootings occurred at Compton and Dominguez High
Schools in 1972, the same year the suburb ranked second in reported homicides in Los Angeles
County beating out Long Beach, a city five times the size of Compton (Reft). Furthermore, a battle
between the district administrators and teachers over low pay, school violence and lack of resources

Tutu
In Margaret Fuhrer s article entitled The Life of a Tutu, she said, If tutus could talk, they would tell
some pretty amazing stories (Fuhrer). In today s dance world, the popularity of a ballet tutu is bigger
than ever and the industry continues to be an ever growing one. The intricate work put into each one
has mesmerized audiences and has helped to compliment the story of a ballet and a dancer s
movement for many years. As said by Victoria Looseleaf, A tutu frames a dancer s movements, its
construction supporting the physicality of ballet. Wearing a tutu generally marks a mature stage in a
classical dancer s career, since nothing exposes the precision of classical technique as does the brief,
jutting skirt with the snug fitting bodice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Victoria Looseleaf said of classical tutus, Known later as classical tutus and made famous by ballets
like Swan Lake, these freer garments climbed farther north, becoming even shorter when ballet
entered the 20th century, the added tarlatan layers creating a flared from the body effect (Looseleaf).
Classical tutus generally will use 25 meters of tulle, but it is not unusual to find tutus out in the ballet
world that have tulle as long as 110 meters. This length is longer than a football field! The top layers
are generally 13 to 15 inches long from the hip to the edge of the skirt. However, some dancers such
as the Russian like plates that reach as far as 18 inches. One dancer says, I was once told by a designer
that the Russian ballerinas don t like to be able to see their feet (Hamilton). Beneath these top layers
are 15 inch layers that surround the hoop. The hoop was a new innovation in that time period that gave
the tutu a sense of lifting, especially when in action on the dance floor. Finally, some tutus will have
little ruffles that go down to the panty to create a continuous look of frill from the top to the bottom of
the tutu. This gives a nice, lengthy

The Color Of Water Essay
The Color of Water is a book about a black man s tribute to his white mother. In this book we journey
through James McBride s life while he figures out who he is. As we go through the book we learn
more about james and his family past. Ruth james mother was a jew her father was abusive did not
care for the children the way a father should. Ruth s mother was disabled but loved the kids and took
care of them as best as she could. As James gets older he wants to know more about where he came
from. He did not know much of his past as a result of his mother not wanting her children knowing
about the rough past she came from. As well as wanting to learn about the secretive past his mother

There being such a past puts people like james into confusion when trying to figure out who they are
and where they belong. James had a black father and white mother and asked many times whether he
was white or black. Although, james mother saw the color of his skin as no reason to love him less
James wanted an answer to the question; but this was an answer his mother would not give him.
Because James went to a Jewish school that was mostly white it was hard for him to fit in and it wasn
t until he was older that he found his passion for music. James was not the only one to struggle with
where he belonged his mother also did not know where she fit. The color of our skin should be no

Relationship Between United States And Cuba
Trade Between U.S. and Cuba
Zoe McDowell
Randolph Community College
Since 1961, the United States and Cuba have had no relations with one another, and have used
Switzerland as a mediator for the two countries to communicate (Suddath, 2009). This is beginning to
change; the U.S and Cuba did business and trade together long ago, but when the U.S. found that
Cuba allowed the Soviet Union to build missile bases in Cuba, along with other things leading up to
this down fall, all business between the U.S and Cuba came to a halt. On April 13, 2009, President
Barak Obama announced that the United States would lift all restrictions and begin to trade and do
business with Cuba, again (Suddath, 2009). Cuba s current ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The technology is Cuba ass limited because the government only allows certain officials to have
access to Internet and certain technological equipment. They would only allow some state workers,
artists, and some academics to have Internet access (Silva, 2015). When Obama announced that
relations with Cuba would be possible again, the Cuban citizens were hopeful that their access to
better and more advances technology would be possible, as well (Silva, 2015). In Cuba, online access
will cost about five dollars an hour, which is more than what most Cuban citizens make in one week
(Silva, 2015). In more recent years, Cubans have started to use more advanced technology and
equipment such as, smart phones, laptops, Blackberry handsets, and some Android devices. The
advancements in Cuba are far behind the United States because many of the technological advances
that we have in the United States are very simple to retrieve; in Cuba, they are harder. Trade and doing
business with Cuba could cause legal issues due to the issues that they may have with certain
products, due to their culture and government rulings. Since the government in Cuba is Communist,
most of the decisions are made by the government. Culture plays a big role in the products that people
use in other countries, and this could cause future issues with doing business in Cuba for the U.S. In
conclusion, the United States is far more advanced with technology and many other

  • 2. The Girl I Know At School There s this girl I know at school, Lindsey, we weren t exactly friends, although, we did socialize quite a bit in class. She doesn t really have many friends other than myself and about two other people, which I found weird and sad because she s really cool, high spirited, pretty and really, just an amazing person in general. Today, though, was the day I got to see a different side of her, the side that she had never shown anyone. Today at lunch she didn t eat with her friends unlike usual and she ate very little. When I passed by her with my friends to get to where we usually sit after we eat, she said hi and walked away right after without giving me a chance to respond, I was starting to get worried about her. Okay, so, is there stuff happening at home that a teacher or supervisor should probably know? I won t tell anyone so you don t have to worry about that, you can trust me. No, there isn t, that s why I can t solve, or even cope with these emotional meltdowns... because there isn t anything wrong in my life, that I know of at least. Okay, look, I think I know what s wrong. You might actually have depression, I ve had those feelings before, so I know what they feel like, and I know this sounds a lot like a bullshit cliché but trust me, it does get better. Well, thanks for trying but I don t think it will. I m sorry, but I ve dealing with this for too long and it s just getting to be too much to handle. Really? How long? Why didn t you tell me I could have been there to help you, to support you, to help you not feel so alone anymore. I m sorry, I couldn t... I just couldn t. I couldn t have risked you thinking bad or lower about me. She said as she started to cry lightly again. Okay, please stop... I would never do that and you know it. I told her as I put my hand on her shoulder wiping away some of her tears. Well, thanks but I still think trying to help me is pointless and a lost cause because I just can t handle it anymore. I m really sorry to say it, but I ve considered suicide before, but I just couldn t do it because I know that people ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Colin Singleton Character Analysis Author s purpose John Green s main purpose in writing this novel was to say it s okay to not know who you are. Colin Singleton was seventeen and panicking because he doesn t know who he is. He just got dumped his nineteenth Katherine and has fallen into a depression, Colin Singleton is nothing but a brain without a Katherine by his side. Colin finds out that just because he s a former child prodigy, that doesn t mean he s going to be a genius in his adult years to come. He has trouble accepting that because he wants to be remembered as someone important. Major Characters To begin, at the start of the novel Colin Singleton has dated nineteen girls named Katherine, because girls named Katherine were his type . He has also been dumped by all of these Katherine s, except number three. Then, at the end of the novel he s dating a girl named Lindsey , not Katherine. Which is probably his eureka moment that he s been looking for ever since he was a little boy. That s probably the biggest character change in this book. Major Theme The overall theme of the book is finding yourself and who you are. There are several small themes that are seen throughout the book, one of those is love and another is being remembered. Colin makes it a priority to have a Katherine because without one, he doesn t know how to function correctly. Without a Katherine he doesn t even know who he is. He starts having trouble finding himself after he gets dumped by Katherine number nineteen. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Rural Economy Of Fiji Sugarcane industry, today dominates the rural economy of Fiji and employs a large number of rural population. The first sugar, introduced by the European colonists, was produced in Fiji in 1862 around the flatland areas near Suva (now the capital city of the country) due to the availability of fertile alluvial soils (FSC 2014). However, after the first few years the center of production shifted to the rural western and northern parts of Fiji s two biggest islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu (also known as the cane belt area ), due to the fact that sugarcane needs dryer areas for better quality of sugar to be produced (Ward 1965; Mayer 1961). Whilst the majority of the growers are Fiji Indians, the land belongs to the indigenous Fijians ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sugar contributed 8 percent of the Gross Domestic Production (Fiji Island Bureau of Statistics 2015). In short, sugar industry is still vital for Fiji s economy and the significance of the industry is still substantial to Fiji s rural economy (Paresh and Biman 2003). For the purpose of this essay, the rural livelihoods of Fiji Indian sugarcane farmers will be discussed in relation to the sustainable livelihood framework. Chambers and Conway (1992, p. 6) defines sustainable livelihood as: A livelihood comprises the capabilities, assets (including both material and social resources) and activities required for a means of living. A livelihood is sustainable when it can cope with and recover from stresses and shocks, maintain or enhance its capabilities and assets, while not undermining the natural resource base. On the other hand, Scoones (2015, p. 11) argues rural livelihood is more than agriculture and farming, it includes off farm activities such as rural employment and migration as means of links to the urban areas. This essay, thus, will first explore the livelihood assets of rural farmers, that is, the human, physical, natural, financial and social capitals. Secondly, it will discuss the vulnerability contexts affecting the farmers, such as, the shocks, trends and seasonality. Thirdly, this essay will look at the livelihood diversification strategies for farmers and, finally it will conclude with recommendations for improving the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The technology developed which allowed the networks NBC, CBS and ABC, to broadcast TV in real time. The moment was realized during the 1952 presidential election. Broadcasters were able to show the Democratic and Republican conventions live. This was important because rural America was able to see in real time Dwight Eisenhower and Adlai Stevenson running against each other. From 1949 to 1969 the amount of televisions grew from one million to about 45 million. The amount of TV stations grew from a mere 69 to almost 570. • 7. Design Standards And Design Languages And Their Impact On... Introduction Design is subjective. There is no question or counter argument to dispute that claim, people naturally like good design. While it may seem drastic to assume that design is something that requires immense skill, it s important to know that design encompasses everything that the average person will do in their life. When it comes to software, design can make or break the success of a product. Defining what design is and citing examples from important software designers is the first step to expound why design is so important to modern society. Next, highlighting design standards and design languages and their impact on the world of design is just as important as describing the process designers use to amalgamate digital physics and interaction, in order to engender users with a sense of alluring delight. After that, defining the basic ideas and processes behind designing, from concept to working golden release, are also required to introduce users to the importance of design. In order to help explain various design experiences and concepts, such as using design everyday or as a tool, it can be important to look at a few design languages (in depth guidelines on software physics, motion, and design). Search Story In my opinion, design is one of the most important parts of human interaction within both our physical and digital worlds. But it becomes a place that reassure parents that their children are safe, not by just word of mouth, but by allowing parents to come and get a hands on experience with the school. • 9. Authoritarianism Left and Right: Two Sides of the Same Coin Throughout history, different forms of government have been used to control and lead the masses. One of the most powerful of these forms is Authoritarianism which often aims to consolidate rule for one individual. This is shown through the leaders Francisco Franco and Mao Zedong, who represent both sides of the political compass, and they both gained authority using extremely similar methods. By using these two leaders it is possible to see how whether left or right wing, Authoritarian leaders rise and control power in similar ways. Authoritarianism is not bound to a single ideology or group, thus is can be used by both left and right wing politicians. An example of the later is Francisco Franco ... Mao had be an avid revolutionist, beginning at young age at around 16 (Schram, S. R. 1967), which would be crucial later in his life. A pivotal point before the Chinese Civil War was the setting up of a revolutionary base in 1931 by Mao. This base was forced out of Kiangsi in 1934 and Mao s followers left with him, thus beginning the Long March which ended in 1935. After the Long March, Mao had enough military power to overcome the Kuomintang, or Chinese Nationalists Party, and gain control of China during the Chinese Civil War (C N Trueman, 2015). During this civil war China received support from Soviet Russia in the form of arms and military guidance. As Yang Kuisong, a Chinese historian from 1945, stated Soviet leader Joseph Stalin commanded Marshal Rodion Malinovskyto give Mao Zedong most Imperial Japanese Army weapons that were captured. Luminol Synthesis Lab Report In the experiment, Luminol Synthesis and Chemiluminescence, the purpose is to create luminol using the base mediated reduction of 5 nitro 2,3, dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione and to investigate the chemiluminescence reaction that luminol is known for. 5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione was reduced using sodium hydrosulfite in a solution of sodium hydroxide under reflux conditions. Acetic acid was used to precipitate the solid luminol product, later the product was collected through vacuum filtration. Acetic acid was used to protonate the solution after the 5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione was reduced from NO2 to NH2. If the equivalents of the two reagents were reversed, NaOH would produce less product since less of the 5 nitro 2,3 dihydrophthalazine 1,4 dione would be deprotonated. 3. Cold water was used to rinse the luminol because it is only soluble in organic solvents, allowing for a better yield of the luminol product. If hot water were to be used the amount of product would be decreased, because hot water has a higher tendency to dissolve products, yielding less luminol solid. 4. Luminol is dissolvable in organic solvents such as, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane but it is insoluble in water. If an organic solvent were used instead, the luminol would dissolve which would result in the decrease of the yielded product. 5. The difference between chemiluminescence and fluorescence is the origin of energy used for the light emission. The energy source for fluorescence arises from the excited electron falling back to its ground state, emitting light. This energy is emitted as light when it is absorbed at a higher frequency and then released at a lower frequency visible to humans. The second idea was that people shouldn t be defined by their sex at birth, you should be defined by your personality and how you express it. One main reason that Stephens should teach this unit next year is because I feel like people, specifically boys, should be more open about their feelings, so it won t build up and eventually burst open like a bubble. One of the sources we examined was The Mask You Live In (Jennifer Newson). This ties into my opinion because Harvey Milk was criticized for being gay, but that didn t stop him from achieving his goal. People might be intimidated to do things of criticism. Ulcerative Colitis Lab Report Inflamed tissues from Ulcerative Colitis (UC) patients show increased oxidative and nitrosative damage, leading to accumulation of mutations and dysplastic progression27,28. Infiltrating leukocytes from these patients have increased ROS production in basal conditions and in response to different ligands29. Since TLR4 mediates ROS production in leukocytes22, it is easy to speculate that immune cells drive pro tumorigenic effects of TLR4. However, bone marrow transfer experiments in our lab demonstrate that non immune TLR4 participates in development of neoplasia8. Furthermore, we have shown that epithelial TLR4 activation predisposes to colitis and CAC6. To understand the role of epithelial TLR4 in neoplasia, our research has focused on the ... King barely escaped the March 28 event unharmed, and swore to return to Memphis and conduct this demonstration properly with no violence. The date for the new march was set at April 4, 1968. This time, King would not survive his fateful trip to Memphis. Additionally, local newspapers criticized King when he announced he was coming back to Memphis for a second round. Among other comments, the local press criticized him for staying at a white owned Holiday Inn, instead of the Motel Lorraine, which was black owned. Hoping to avoid further antagonistic press in wake of the disastrous March 28 demonstration, King s camp switched his accommodations to a room at the Motel Lorraine, where he died on April 4. From a security standpoint, changing King s lodging to this particular motel was a bad mistake. The Motel Lorraine was located in a fairly seedy part of town. Living in 16th and 17th century Ireland must not have been easy considering the history. During this time there was a famine and England was watching and waiting for the downfall of this country. Swift was a satirical writer who was very good at his craft. In A Modest Proposal, Swift introduces a lunatic idea that his country should eat the children. He is, of course, joking, but he makes a huge statement in saying this. It shows that the government would rather ignore or blame the problem on someone else rather than fixing the problem itself. This reading relates to an audience in that Swift is trying to let the people of his time see what a horrible government the people of Ireland live in. This argument mattered to the people of Ireland and it should matter today because it shows how a government can say it takes care of its people when it truly does not. A Modest Proposal, is a very valuable piece because it proves that it just takes one voice to open the eyes of others, and I believe that Swift did an excellent job using the rhetorical triangle because his satirical masterpiece made people think about how they were being treated by the government. They could be as simple as what you should wear that day or as important as what degree you should pursue. It is the more important choices in our lives however, that will define who we are and effect our future. C.S Lewis stated in his book, Mere Christianity, that Every time you make a choice you are turning the central part of you, the part that chooses, into something different than it was before. And taking your life as a whole, with all your innumerable choices, all your life long you are slowly turning this central thing into a heavenly creature or a hellish creature. There are two books, Pilgrims Progress and Paradise Lost, that are perfect examples of this quote. Pilgrims Progress, by John Bunyan, is about the difficulties that a Christian faces throughout his journey towards the Celestial City. Paradise Lost, by John Milton, is, on the other hand, a story about Satan s fall from heaven and His deception of Adam and Eve. These two great works of literature give clear examples of how choices effect the outcome of one s life. In John Bunyan s Pilgrims Progress there are several characters whose choices greatly implement their situation. The main character, whose name is Christian, has striking illustrations of this. Its origins date back to the early 1920 s from a man by the name of Professor Elton Mayo, who began to start the research that would later bring the Human Relations Theory into play (Perry,Gail). In the year 2002, Cowell created yet another show called American Idol. This show would air in the United States, and have the same rules as Pop Idol. The show would hold auditions for people who believed they had a talent in singing. There were 3 judges, Cowell being one. Then, the people who were at home watching, would send in their vote, and that would decide who won the show. The only difference was that, the overall winner would get 1,000,000 dollars toward a record deal, instead of only having one option, like pop idol. Also, the finalist who did not win, would also get a record deal, but this was only for the runner up. American has been around for 14 years, and still going strong. Currently, English language is spreading globally and it has received a world recognition. According to Schneider (2007), English is the world s lingua franca as it is being used internationally and exclusively as the language of politics, trade and the internet. In some countries such as Nigeria and Singapore, English has become a local language in which it is used in their daily communication (Schneider, 2007). • 41. Hollywood Comparison Of Pride And Prejudice Jane Austen s famous novel Pride and Prejudice has had many film adaptations over the years. Two of the most popular are the 1995 miniseries, and the 2005 Hollywood film. Both of these films have many similarities, as well as many differences, and they both have strong points when representing the novel and the Regency Period. However, the 1995 miniseries takes the cake when it comes to accuracy. The miniseries is much longer than the movie, and as such, it gives more time for the characters to grow and develop. The movie feels much more rushed; the pacing is too fast. The movie also gives a more modern feel about love and romance. It is far more dramatic, and overly emotional, such as the initial proposal between Darcy and Elizabeth. It took place out in the open, on a rainy day, rather than privately in a home. The movie Elizabeth is more sensational and exciting, shouting her emotions, rather than explaining them in a calm and collected manner like 1995 Elizabeth. ... These include: Lack of market co operation. Lack of adequate statistics. Government control. Insurance nationalism. Tied up capital. Reinsurance cost. While companies form captives with the initial motive of underwriting its parent s risks, they are likely to need the cooperation of the market. Sometime market co operation is very difficult to get, especially in a very difficult insurance market environment where the possibility of creating a parent company is either not available or it is possible only at exorbitant cost. The growth of captives has been gradual in the early stage until the 1960s, and 1970s, when a substantial expansion took place. The growth may be seen as a clear evidence of the demand by corporations and institutions for a greater level of cost efficiency and response to new problems of risk management. The coming of captives brought significant changes in the business environment of risk management and even greater changes are envisaged to occur in the future. The changes captives brought along have affected many including commercial insurers and reinsurers, government bodies, the operation of insurance agents and brokers in the distribution systems for insurance. The effects are felt in the competitive pressure experienced by the traditional insurance market brought about by captive presence, which has brought about important underwriting changes among the commercial insurers. The current method of rate making by commercial insurers is altered significantly because of the growing importance of captive, since current rating classes now tend to be broad, permitting the average insurer to operate in a fairly level and stable rate structure across industries. Thus, firms with relatively favourable loss experience are contributing to losses of those with poorer experience. Captives constituted a big threat for the conventional insurance because they have a lot going for them. The traditional insurance market did not welcome captive movement because it saw the movement as a threat to its share of the insurance market. They were made to accept captives when they realised that many businesses were flourishing as a result of captive activities and they benefited directly and indirect from those ... • 44. Film Analysis Of The Movie The Bride Of Frankenstein Making a good movie is easy but making a great movie is hard. As I watched a short clip from the movie The Bride of Frankenstein I watched how the acting, plot, lighting, camera work, and script all made this film come to life. This movie was made in 1935 yet it is still so compelling to watch because it is successful with the important components of a movie. The first thing I noticed about the short clip was the lighting. As a photographer lighting is the most important thing about pictures and films. I realized that the whole movie was very dark for the most part. As I watched the short clip I saw harsh shadows on the background or on their faces which gave a mysterious feeling. As a viewer it came off creepy, and kept thinking was something about to pop out? The lighting was great when Pretorius says to Dr. Frankenstein You are responsible for all the murders, there is a dark shadow on Dr. Frankenstein. As for Pretorius it seems like he has a halo of light around him. I have a feeling that the lightening in this conversation was intentional. Dr. Frankenstein is looked down, dark, and evil because he murdered people. While in this same conversation it seems like Pretorius is the good guy in this situation even though they both do not seem very good. All in all, the lighting was very intentional. If they put soft/ airy lighting in this film, I do not think the message would come across and it would not be as interesting than it was. Acting and script go hand on hand ... Schools became so crowded, understaffed and obtained an inadequate amount of resources making it evident that the system was failing. When the schools funding became nearly forty percent from local tax payer s dollars in the mid sixties and early seventies, many fled the scene and moved to an area with lower taxes, but the blacks remained. One dancer says, I was once told by a designer that the Russian ballerinas don t like to be able to see their feet (Hamilton). Beneath these top layers are 15 inch layers that surround the hoop. The hoop was a new innovation in that time period that gave the tutu a sense of lifting, especially when in action on the dance floor.
