Integrate expert views on taxonomy into
public database resources
Improve resources for high throughput
sequence annotation
• Catalyze experts in protist taxonomy to engage in
curation and validation of a ribosomal DNA marker
gene database for eukaryotic lineages across the
tree of life.
• Synthesize the efforts of individual curators to
produce a phylogenetically curated ribosomal DNA
marker gene database for eukaryotes.
• Use the improved reference database to
characterize the environmental distribution of
eukaryotic microbes from large-scale HTES
datasets.

  • 3. • Catalyze experts in protist taxonomy to engage in curation and validation of a ribosomal DNA marker gene database for eukaryotic lineages across the tree of life. • Synthesize the efforts of individual curators to produce a phylogenetically curated ribosomal DNA marker gene database for eukaryotes. • Use the improved reference database to characterize the environmental distribution of eukaryotic microbes from large-scale HTES datasets. Editor's Notes

  1. A refined curation pipeline, associated computational tools, and curation instructions. These will all be refined during the workshop through feedback from taxonomic curators and improved by participants with computational expertise. This curation package will enable members of the community that do not attend the workshop to curate their eukaryotic lineage of interest. These resources will be made publicly available on the EukRef.org website. Reference databases for individual lineages produced by each curator. These datasets will be made publicly available one year after the workshop to enable curators to first publish on individual clades if desired. We expect papers to arise from individual curation efforts, highlighting novel diversity and/or ecological distribution of protistan taxa across environments. Each database will consist of: A clean set of curated eukaryotic 18S rDNA reference sequences; A list of mis-annotated/chimeric sequences that were removed; A phylogenetic tree; A file with curated taxonomic information for each sequence; Environmental contextual data (desired but not required). The workshop organizers will also produce a synthesis paper highlighting the efficiency of the proposed community-based bottom-up curation process to uncover novel protistan diversity, inform it with accurate taxonomy, and study its ecological patterning on wide spatial and temporal scales. In addition, the reconstruction of a harmonized and exhaustive phylogeny of eukaryotes will be a boost for the field of evolutionary protistology.
