Ww1 Causes
The Great War, also known as World War One was between July 28th, 1914 and November 11th,
1918. This was considered one of the worst wars ever fought, it lasted 4 years, 3 months and 2 weeks.
World War One consisted of Trench warfare. Trench warfare was warfare which the armies attack,
counterattack, and defend from a system of trenches dug into the ground. To spark this horrific war
was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand who was an Archduke of Austria este., Austro
Hungary, Royal Price of Hungary and of Bohemia. The long term causes of World War One were
Militarism, Alliances, and Nationalism. Militarism is the glorification of military, the belief of a nation

Due to secret alliance created between nations, it is inevitable that a disagreement between two
nations will lead to the involvement of many nations, who already secretly agreed to help each other.
This is why alliances is a cause of World War One. Two major alliances before WW1 was the Triple
Alliance and the Triple Entente which consisted of Russia, France and Great Britain. The Triple
Entente was created to counter the Triple Alliance, which consisted of Germany, Austria Hungary and
Italy. In the beginning of the war, the Triple Alliance will be known as the Central Powers not
including Italy because Italy finds in their best interest to wait and see how the war unfold and go to
the winning side to allow them to grow as a nation. The Central Powers will sooner or later consist of
the Ottoman Empire, German Empire, Austro Hungary and the Kingdom of Bulgaria. The Triple
Entente will eventually be known as Allied Powers and grow remarkably, consisting of Kingdom of
Siberia, the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Italy, the British Empire, the French Third Republic, the
Kingdom of Belgium, the Empire of Japan, the Portuguese Republic, the Kingdom of Greece, the
Kingdom of Romania, the United States, and many others who lent financial aid and

Theoretical Paradigms Of Structural Family Systems Theory
The major theoretical paradigm that informs structural family therapy is based on systems theory. The
word system is rooted in Latin and Greek words that mean to place together so a system can be
thought of as an entity made out of other entities that are placed together (Rosenblatt, 1994, pg. 49). In
systems theory there are many elements, assumptions, definitions to address the different dynamics
within a system. According to Rosenblatt (1994) systems theory provides insight into how systems
(families) are formed and highlights the patterns that surface within the system. Systems theory places
emphasis on the entire system (entire family), rather than focusing on the different parts (individuals)
of the system (Rosenblatt, 1994). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Vetere (2001) structure is defined by any given point in time where families organize
themselves based on overt/covert rules that impact the behaviors and choices of the family. Systems
theory discusses the different levels in a system and how one level influences another and so this same
assumptions can be observed in structural model (Rosenblatt, 1994). In structural model the family is
looked at as being embedded within wider social systems which serve as transactional patterns
(Navarre, 1998). Each family member can be characterized in more than one subsystem for a
permanent or short period of time. The roles of each member will be defined based on the subsystem
they are in. Family members are categorized by different subsystems, which can consist of parental,
couple, parent child, grandparent, male/female, power, hobby and interest (Minuchin, 1974). Hence,
based on the relationship of a subsystem families can form coalitions, enmeshment and
disengagement. According to Minuchin (1974) problems that children face are frequently due to the
boundaries between them and the parental

The Internment Of Japanese Americans During Wwii
Jaquelyn Hernandez
2nd Hr.Social Studies/ 3rd Hr.English
Unnecessary December 7, 1941 Roosevelt said, A date that will live in infamy. Japan entered World
War II in 1940 alongside the Axis which included Germany and Italy. Hideki Tojo then came to power
a year later. The Government saw the Dutch East Indies rich in oil as well as other Asian territories.
However the only threat to stopping the Japanese from conquering them was the U.S. Navy. In order
for this to happen Japan bombed the Huge Naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The surprise attack
killed 2,400 Americans and damaged warships and planes. Congress quickly took action and declared
war on Japan. On December 11 Japan s allies declared war on the United States. Roosevelt signed
Executive order 9066 on February 19, 1942. Executive order 9066 forced all the Japanese on the West
Coast into internment camps without a trial, (American History 807 811). The internment of Japanese
Americans during WWII was not justified because it was done because of their race, it violated their
individual rights, and it did not help the war effort.
The U.S. issued Executive Order 9066 because of fear and anger towards the Japanese. American
citizens were put in prison camps for crimes they did not commit. The only reason Japanese
Americans were put into internment camps was because Japan attacked the United States, But when,
under conditions of modern warfare, our shores are threatened by hostile forces, the power to protect

Gwendolyn Brook And Kwame Dawess Analysis
The African American Struggle Through Contemporary Poetry Ai, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Kwame
Dawes are all contemporary African American poets. Their works often focused on different aspects
of the post civil rights movement in the African American community. Ai was known for writing
poetry on hard subjects. She was also known for writing poems that were graphic. Being multiracial,(
1/2 Japanese, 1/8 Choctaw, 1/4 Black, and 1/16 Irish), many of her poems were based on the
complexity of identity ( qtd. in Ai, a Steadfast Poetic Channel of Hard Lives, Dies at 62 ). On the other
hand, Kwame Dawes is a Nigerian born man of Jamaican descent. Gwendolyn Brooks was an African
American woman whose adult years were spent during the civil rights movement. Tornado Child is a
poem written by Kwame Dawes in 2002. It celebrates different aspects of black womanhood. In
contrast, Gwendolyn Brook s We Real Cool is written in the sixties and talks about the negative
aspects of stereotypes. The Kid by Ai is graphic and depicts violence. All of the poems demonstrate
different struggles that are faced by the African American community. This essay will specifically
examine the African American struggle through the lens of misogynoir, stereotypes, and the
destruction of black families. The first poem, Tornado Child by Kwame Dawes, explores the African
American struggle through misogynoir. Dictionary.com describes misogynoir as the specific hatred,

The Building Blocks of Alice Walker Alice Walker, an american writer, was born in Putnam, Georgia,
and was the youngest of her eight siblings. Her father, Willie Walker, was wonderful at math, but a
terrible farmer and made around $4,000 dollars in today s money by sharecropping and dairy farming.
Her mother, Millie Grant, worked as a maid 11 hours a day to help send Alice to college. Growing up
listening to her grandfather s stories of his past, Walker began building her empire for writing. When
Walker was 8 years old, one of her brothers accidently shot her in the right eye with a BB gun. The

loves women s culture, music, dance, the spirit, and herself. Her definition would transform black
women s literary criticism and had a major impact on feminism in general. (Gillespie 11) Walker also
was greatly influenced by Zora Neale Hurston, an African American woman writer during the Roaring

Deprivation Of Lethal Discourse
Deprivation of accepted resources is perhaps one of the lethal lapses mankind has ever prepared in its
voyage of progress and civilization. All the natural resources are contaminated with lethal lapses.
Among them the land and water resources are worst affected and under continuous stress with both
biotic and abiotic, due to anthropogenic interventions. If we talk about the soul of infinite life i.e.,
SOIL then it seems to appear the primary recipient by design or accident of a myriad of waste
products and chemicals used in modern society. Soil contamination can be defined as the, addition of
any substance to soil that may exert adverse effects on its functioning and capacity to yield a crop.
Contamination of heavy metal is of special worry

Mise En Scene In Psycho
From the quote, we are able to see that all , if not most , of Hitchcock s films seek to play with the
viewer s emotions, often by leaving crumbs of suspense before the action, making the viewers go
through a myriad of emotions. Hence, for Psycho, I will be discussing three scenes where Hitchcock
has deliberately and precisely controlled via the film medium, to engage us. Argobhast and Norman s
conversation scene. In this scene, we see Argobhast s journey towards finding out the true reason of
Marion s disappearance and hence, Hitchcock plays us via Norman and Argobhast s first interaction.
Initially, the scene opens up on a light note, with Norman seen reading and eating candy and as the
non diegetic ominous sound slowly disappearing, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Upon entering the parlor, Hitchcock has set the stage for the viewer to use Marion as a vehicle to
determine how Norman is like. The POV shot of Marion studying the room first brings out attention to
a stuffed Owl and a stuffed crow, the first indicator to the viewer that something is not right, making
us feel suspicious already. Marion then takes the seat closer to the tiffany lamp while Norman takes
the seat at the opposite side of the room which is noticeably darker. Mise en scence in this scene does
the most to capture the true personalities of the characters. For Marion, Hitchcock has deliberately
surrounded her with objects such as the lamp which is actually the only source of light for the whole
room, a pitcher of milk and several other scenic objects. Furthermore, the milk may perhaps
symbolize innocence that despite the crime committed, there is a redeeming quality within Marion that
will save her. As Marion sits closest to the lamp, her face remains brightly lit up and similarly casting
the same effect towards the objects around her. The viewer upon seeing Marion, unconsciously feels at
ease within her presence, perhaps even forgetting that Marion is no

Theme Of Justice in The Big Sleep and The Black Cat Essay
The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler and The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe both approach the theme
of justice and present it in dissimilar ways. The Big Sleep presents justice as something which you can
achieve through beliefs and morals, without the use of money and crime. The Black Cat presents
justice as something which is absolute and something which you cannot escape psychologically, a
force which is inevitable.
In The Big Sleep, a conversation between Philip Marlowe and Vivien Sternwood is proceeding, in
which Marlowe is offered $15,000 to be silenced over the disappearance of Rusty Regan, and within
the conversation the reader is given an insight into the motivations and morals of Marlowe, and his
own personal view of the topic in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whether it is perceived as irony or outright sarcasm, Marlowe reveals he does his job for the money ,
which is only $25 per day, but then later refuses to accept the offer of $15,000 despite the fact that he
knows he could own a home and a new car and four suits of clothes...even take a vacation . The
refusal shows Marlowe s anti heroic status, as he appreciates the advantages of corruption but believes
the well being of his client and ... to protect what little pride a broken and sick old man has left in his
blood is more important. Edgar Allen Poe s tales usually contain graphic imagery and themes of fear
and horror, all shown in The Black Cat. In this extract, as it written in a narrative form it shows the
true psychological struggle between the narrator and their demons as it explores the criminal mind
from a first person point of view, noticing both character and motivation.
The aspects of justice shown in The Black Cat are Criminal Justice and the ideology of Religious
Justice. Unlike The Big Sleep, the Criminal Justice System of the 19th century was much more
ruthless in that even the narrator is aware his actions will get recognised and punished, an action
which appears inevitably. Revealed later on, the narrator explains that he has been consigned to the
hangman, an act of Criminal Justice upon the narrator.
The infinite mercy of the Most Merciful and Most Terrible God , a common notion in the 1800 s was
that justice would be served

Analyzing Erikson s Psychosocial Theories
Erik Erikson s Psychosocial Theory places everyone into stages, from the days where they still need
diapers and bottles, to the days where they can barely remember who they are. We all go through the
stages in life where we learn to walk, communicate, and trust. How easy we are influenced and how
we feel internally is what helps us understand how we are placed within these stages.
With me being 18 years old, I am placed into the Identity vs. Role Confusion stage. According to
David (2014), An adolescent must struggle to discover and find his or her own identity, while
negotiating and struggling with social interactions and fitting in , and developing a sense of morality
and right from wrong. (para. 7). I believe there is a close fit between these ... Show more content on

Children s Eating Habits Are Not Consistent With...
Gardening can range from fruit orchards to residential yards to fields with rows of crops. It involves a
very active participation in the growing of plants and includes labor intensive activities. Gardening
can be considered a relaxing activity for many individuals. Many classrooms and parents have taken
to teaching their children the skills of gardening at a young age. Involving children in the process of
growing their own food improves their fitness, causes them to eat healthier, makes them feel pride in
growing something, gives them a sense of self reliance and instills in them skills and values that
become important for the rest of their lives.

The program lets children grow their own food which creates interest in eating what they grow and
instills in them the values that children can learn from growing food and cooking it From Water s
experience, when a child has been involved in the whole process of growing they take pride in it when
it is ripe and are more likely to eat the crops they produced. In an interview Water stated, When kids
grow food and cook it and serve it, they want to eat it. All of the very important ideas about
sustainability and nutrition come in by osmosis. They re engaged with all of their senses. Once they ve

know when the raspberries are ripe, they know how to plant seeds. (Broache, p. 50). Water witnessed
firsthand the benefits of gardening through observing the children who participated in her program.

The Synthesis Of Apomorphine Was Historically Accomplished...
Introduction: Apomorphine has been used as far back as 2000 BC. In 2000 BC the Mayan s noticed
that the bulb and root of water lilies gave a narcotic feeling, as well as acted as an aphrodisiac and
partial hallucinogen.1 Apomorphine belongs to a class of molecules called aporphines which are
present in water lilies, more specifically in Nymphaea caerulea and Nymphaea ampla.1 While mild
effects were shown in parts of water lilies, scientists wanted to know what exactly caused these
effects. The compounds were isolated and tested to determine that apomorphine was the most active
ingredient. The concentration of apomorphine was so low in the plants that isolation was impractical
so a synthesis was designed to investigate the properties of apomorphine further; leading to
apomorphine being used for Parkinson s disease, erectile dysfunction, and most recently Alzheimer
disease.
Synthesis2: The synthesis of apomorphine was historically accomplished by an acid catalyzed
rearrangement of morphine. This method typically had low and varying yields: anywhere from 0.6%
to 46% yield. In 2008, a new synthesis was patented that shown yields as high as 55% to 70% yield.
This new synthesis, scheme 1, uses phosphoric acid as the catalyst and phosphorus pentoxide as a
water scavenger water is the by product of the reaction and the phosphorus pentoxide irreversibly
binds to the water. The solution would then be heated to 90 100℃ in an inert atmosphere for two
hours.

Descriptive Essay About My Mother
My mommy, one of the most important people in my life, the most selfless individual I know probably
will ever know. From the moment I was born, she was the first person I fell in love with. She is indeed
gorgeous, but its her soft light brown eyes that show nothing but kindness the love you get from her
make you feel warm on the coldest day. My mom always worked hard to ensure that me and my sister
had the best upbringing that we could get, at times she was strict and often talked to me in a stern tone
whenever me or my sister made a mistake. Of course no child likes punishment, but as I got older and
looked back on it I realized that she was correcting me out of love not to scrutinize me. Me and my
sister always took pride in our mother s appearance , I especially took pride in her eyes. I remember
when she would come to my school for report card pick up , I wanted to make sure everyone knew
some way some how, that this beautiful creature was my mother. I ve seen very beautiful people
throughout my lifetime, but very few, match the impeccable beauty that is my mother. The main
reason I was always fond of my mother, is because of the way she used to take more than great care of
us, especially when one of us were sick. She is a very knowledgeable woman who knew and made
different at home remedies to care for us when we fell ill. There was never a moment when we were
sick that we felt uncomfortable while we were sick in her care, even the shortest back rubs would put

How Do Hurricanes Affect Southern Coastlines
Over the course of humanity, there have been several notable types of disasters ranging from severe
floods, earthquakes, tornados, fires, ice storms, bombings, tropical storms, and hurricanes. Many
individuals have experienced some form of these disasters throughout their life, either natural or
manmade. Surveys suggest that 13 30% of individuals will be exposed to one or more natural disasters
in their lifetime (Jacob, 2015, p. 512). Along the eastern and southern United States coastlines, the
more common disaster associated with these areas are hurricanes. Each year, on average, 10 tropical
storms, of which six become hurricanes, develop over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of
Mexico from June to November. Many of these remain over the ocean; however, about five hurricanes
strike the United States coastline every three years (Hurricanes, nd, para 4). Based on this average,
roughly two hurricanes per year make landfall. Depending on the severity, that is two large areas with

Philonous And Hylas Play Summary
The dialogue begins with Philonous and Hylas, the protagonists, running into each other. Philonous is
surprised to see Hylas awake so early, but Hylas seems mad. Hylas explains that he has been
contemplating over crazy beliefs that some philosophers have; those who believe nothing at all, and
those who believe everything. Hylas is scared that the philosophers will put thoughts in people s
heads, eventually turning them against their own religion and beliefs. Philonous agrees with Hylas and
explains how doesn t follow what he learned in school, rather he embraces common sense opinions.

reality) that some of their friends do. Philonous explains that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Philonous now begins to explain how materialism can lead to skepticism. Philonous must now explain
that there is no reason to believe in mind independent reality. Philonous introduces the argument from
pleasure and pain as well as the argument of perceptual relativity. First, he makes Hylas admit that we
can only sense sensible things, and that sensible things are nothing but groups of sensible qualities.
Hylas hesitates, but Philonous reassures him. Philonous gives a cherry as an example; a small, red,
sweet cluster, which in actuality could be something other than this. Philonous now introduces the
idea of pain and pleasure. Philonous explains that pain is mind dependant, meaning that pain cannot
exist if nobody is feeling it. The same goes with pleasure. Philonous then explains that this does not
only apply to pain and pleasure, but to any sensible quality. First, Philonous tries to relate heat with
pain. He says that inanimate objects cannot feel pain or pleasure; Matter is inanimate; Matter cannot
feel pain nor pleasure; heat is a form of pain; therefore matter is incapable of feeling heat; This means
heat is mind

Who Is The Greek Beast Cerberus The Protector Of Capitalism
We live in a world controlled by an invisible yet very present force that shapes the way we live our
daily lives. With industry as its host and technology as the blood being pumped into its heart, it is a
force powerful enough to bend politics to fit its needs. Capitalism; a method of industry where
production and distribution are privately or corporately owned, its operation grows through profits,
exploitation of labor, and extinguishing competition. During the Industrial Revolution technology was
on the global stage. Factories and machines are built in existing cities producing and distributing mass
goods on a global scale. Over time this fast production of goods would replace the old agricultural
economy to a modern urban economy. Today the revolution is praised for creating a global trade
market while surging us into a world of technology. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is evident today in New York City, where gentrification is forcing homeowners and local
businesses out of their spaces for incoming international buyers and corporations. Powerfully
connected cities such as New York attract major industries because of their trade ports, financial

and increased rent to get the most bang for their buck. While invisible actors of major corporations
continue to exploit labor and extinguish competition religiously for profit, technology embodies
Cerberus; the protector of capitalism. The greek beast Cerberus is known for protecting the realm of
Hades from intruders. In the similar sense technology is constantly being advanced and innovated to
make production more efficient and cheap, protecting capitalist wealth from the middle/lower class.

The Fall of Rome and Nazi Germany
Societies flourish and fall, all of them do. They fight and suffer and even kill to keep their society
alive. As a result, societies like ancient Rome and Nazi Germany, eventually fall and crumble. Over
time some of these societies recover, but are never the same again. Societies fail due to political
corruption, loss of resources and war. These obstacles are hard to overcome, but not impossible. These
obstacles weaken and tear at societies, until they finally break, turning them into a piece of history.
Political Corruption and the fall of government are one of the main reasons why societies fail.
Lina and Doon have found many things in the City of Ember. One of them leading through the

Aggression And Its Effects On Schools
Aggression in Schools
Aggression remains a behavior between people from the same species that is aimed at causing harm or
pain and is considered an initiator of violence. According to sources, there is an increase of violent
acts in schools with the troubled students needing a habilitative service as compared to punishments
(Dailey, Frey, Walker, 2015). It is essential to consider the fact that aggressive behaviors do not
develop over a short period, thus its eradication as well would not be undertaken in a short time.
It is critical to note that teachers remain wholly responsible for the developing and modeling of
aggressive behaviors among students that occurs either positively or negatively (Dailey, et.al).
Aggressive students are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These functions are mainly influenced by power and control, self gratification, the pursuit of attention
and escape. The primary purpose of aggressive behavior is to inflict, injure or gain something from an
aggressor, a factor that apparently determines the need to find solutions into this vice.
Farrell, Henry, Mays, Schoeny (2011) give the variable between instrumental and hostile aggression.
In his literature, he alleges that the instrumental aggressions are the actions that are aimed at enforcing
an extraneous reward rather than the suffering of an individual. An instance of this can be determined
by a student who steals football boots from another student s bag. On the other hand, hostile
aggression infers to the actions that are committed to producing injurious outcomes through an
approach aimed at gaining resources, power and status within a school environment.
Aggressive behaviors range from verbal, nonverbal or physical acts that are aimed at causing a direct
or indirect injury to a student with the aggressor seeking to gain from such conduct. A student s body

Shared Humanity In The Scarlet Ibis, By James Hurst
Shared Humanity Essay What does it mean to be human? To many people being human can mean
different things, but it can be broken down into six main traits of shared humanity; relationships, loss,
survival, choice, morality, and emotions. These specific traits are what make each individual human.
All six traits play an important role in all humans live like shaping them into who they are and how
they react to certain scenarios. These traits are used in film and literature to enhance the story and
make it more interesting. This essay will be covering how the six main traits of shared humanity are
shown in the novel How I live now by Meg Rosoff, short story the Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, and
the film Waterboy.

The real truth is that the war didn t have much to do with it except that it provided a perfect limbo in
which two people who were too young and too related could start kissing without anything or anyone
making us stop.(Rosoff 64) Daisy knew the entire time that she was doing something that to most
people would be wrong and weird, but she made a choice that made her happy. The choice may
confuse the audience, but it is a very important choice that definitely impacts the remainder of the
story. Daisy uses her love to keep herself and Piper alive in hopes she will get to see and be with
Edmond again. This leads into the other shared humanity trait shown in the novel;survival. Once
Daisy and Piper were separated from Edmond, Isaac, and Osbert, Daisy had to do whatever she could
to help Piper and herself survive and get back to their family. Eventually they were forced to live in a
barn for a week after they discovered that the enemy was going house to house killing innocent
civilians. (Not finished)
Two other shared humanity characteristics, relationship and loss are shown in the short story, the
Scarlet Ibis. The Scarlet Ibis covers the the life of a young boy named

Public Safety Term Papers
To prevent serious consequences from man made and natural disasters and to provide timely medical
response and damage recovery, the Department of Homeland Security coordinates the work of trained
professionals from emergency services departments and agencies across the country. The emergency
services sector encompasses public and private companies that can help in crises prevention, disaster
preparedness and medical treatment. However, only government managed emergency services
departments are responsible for protecting citizens in critical public safety situations, such as when
providing fire prevention or police protection services. Public safety is not something one should think
of only when an incident or a catastrophe occurs. This is why state emergency department agencies
develop emergency management plans and procedures that will help communities organize on the
ground anti crisis action and adequate medical response. A well prepared disaster management office

Heart Of Darkness Kurtz Essay
Joseph Conrad in his book, Heart of Darkness, retells what he experienced in the Congo from the
point of view of his main character, Marlow. Conrad uses many characters to express Freudian
Psychoanalysis, and through each of these characters, Conrad depicts something about European
culture. One of the most prevalent characters that represents this is Kurtz. Kurtz is the most
imperialistic character in the entire book. Conrad, by using Id, Ego, and Superego, shows how
complete lack of society can cause people to devolve as shown by the character of Kurtz and the
difficulties of Conrad s life are also shown through characters and by Marlow who is a representation
of Conrad. Sigmund Freud theorized that the unconscious mind has a great influence on ... Show more

On the pamphlet Marlow discovers a post scriptum that has Exterminate all the brutes scratched onto
the bottom of it (Conrad 45). This foreshadows a change in Kurtz since he was the person who wrote
the pamphlet. Since this does happen to Kurtz, it shows in a similar fashion to William Golding that
humans will innately devolve back to savages. In fact, Conrad takes this a step farther by showing that
Kurtz had completely lost all of his morals. There was nothing either above or below him this shows
that Kurtz had completely gotten rid of all of his morals (Conrad 60). Unlike Golding who still had
characters that had morals or wanted to keep an image of themselves up. Following Marlow s arrival
at Kurtz s camp and taking him to the boat, Kurtz crawls away from the ship to try and return to the
natives. This has importance for Kurtz in both a physical and societal way the former being the fact
that it shows Kurtz is basically an animal since he is crawling. The more important way is the societal
way because it shows the juxtaposition between Kurtz s views on the pamphlet and what is currently
happening. In the pamphlet, Kurtz says that we approach them with the might as of a deity which

National Debt and Budget Deficit Essay
Much like a person or a corporation, the United States government uses money for its operations;
meaning that it has both income and expenses. The income of the United States is derived from
various taxes and fees and the expenses are what the U.S. government pays out for national defense,
highways, social welfare programs, and various other programs.
In an election year, the average citizen is apt to hear a great deal of talk about income, taxes, spending,
and more importantly budget deficits and the national debt. Given all of the talk, one may come to
think that budget deficits and the national debt are one in the same. While the two do go hand in hand,
it is important to understand that they are two separate things. ... Show more content on

Of course, when we, as individuals, borrow money and we pay interest on it, which increases our debt.
The U.S. is no different. In fiscal year 2007, the U.S. paid out $430 billion in interest. This exorbitant
interest expense continues to increase the U.S. annual deficit, which in turn, continues to increase the
national debt that now stands at over $9.5 trillion (Hall, 2008).
As anyone who has experienced financial trouble, especially with credit cards, it is the interest on the
debt that creates the biggest problem. For the U.S., the only way to reduce the interest is to reduce the
debt. The only to reduce the debt is to begin paying it off, and the only way to pay off the debt is to
sustain significant surpluses.
The only way to sustain a surplus is to spend less than one receives. On an individual plane, this is
certainly feasible. However, on a national plane, in order to maintain a surplus is to reduce
government spending and increase taxes. No other solutions are possible. References

Analysis Of Geert Hofstede s Cultural Theory
Culture influences our expectations of what is appropriate or inappropriate and also learned and
reflects the values of a society. It frames our experiences and provides us with patterns of behavior,
thinking, feeling, and interacting. In summary, culture affects every prospect of daily life how we
think and feel, how we learn and teach, or what we consider to be beautiful or cross grained. However,
most people are unaware of their own culture until they experience another. In fact, we don t regularly
suppose about our culture until somebody violates a culturally supported expectation or we find
ourselves in a situation where we have the feeling that we violated somebody else s cultural
expectations, but are inconsonant how. II. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He characterized hierarchical society is a thought framework that is generally imparted between
authoritative parts. By separating out IBM s overwhelming corporate society from his information on
IBM s national auxiliaries, Hofstede had the capacity measurably recognized social contrasts between
nations. 1. Power/Distance (PD) This refers to the degree of inequality that exists and is accepted
among people with and without power. A high PD score indicates that society accepts an unequal
distribution of power, and that people understand their place in the system. Low PD means that power
is shared and well dispersed. It also means that society members view themselves as equals. 2.
Individualism (IDV) This alludes to the quality of the binds individuals need to others inside the
group. A high IDV score shows detached associations. In nations with a high IDV score there is an
absence of interpersonal association and small imparting of obligations past family and maybe a
couple of close companions. A general public with a low IDV score would have solid gathering union
and there would be a lot of dependability and appreciation for parts of the gathering. The gathering
itself is additionally bigger and individuals assume more liability for one another s well being. 3.
Masculinity (MAS) This alludes to the amount of a general public sticks with and values, customary
male and female parts. High MAS scores are found in nations where men are required to be

Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History Summary
Bad Girls
Well behaved women seldom make history. I have seen that phrase and its slightly more common
counterpart, Well behaved women rarely make history many times. It is especially popular in the
Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), a medieval history research and reenactment group in which
I participate, and is often accompanied by images of female fighters in armor wielding swords. Most
recently I saw it emblazoned upon my girlfriend s chest on a medieval themed t shirt that she bought
at a recent SCA event. I have never thought much about the slogan except for the fact that it generally
represents women who make themselves known in unforgettable ways and are remembered mostly for
disrupting the status quo.
Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, an author and professor of history at Harvard University, introduced the
phrase in a 1976 journal article about the characterization of women in Puritan funeral sermons.
Ulrich more recently wrote a book, based on the phrase, that explores how women in the past have
challenged the ways history was written. In her essay Well Behaved Women Seldom Make History,
Ulrich discusses the history of the phrase, how it was coined, and how it has taken on a life of its own.
The phrase is now commonly seen on everything from t shirts to coffee mugs, and has been featured
in magazine articles and even advertising campaigns. She reflects on how her accidental fame has
given her new insights into her historical studies.

The Importance Of Reflection In Nursing
As higher standards expected are from the public and higher patient safety demands are expected from
health boards, therefore, there is a need for a way of measuring standards of practice which can be
achieved through active thinking in a clinical environment brought about by critical reflection (Rolfe,
Jasper Freshwater 2011). Reflection has become such a key component in the role of a nurse that the
Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) have seen it fit to include it in their professional code of
conduct the Code: Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses and Midwives,
hereafter referred to as the Code (Nursing Midwifery Council [NMC], 2015). With reflection being a
vital skill for nurses to continue their professional development (Parrish Crookes, 2013), an analysis
of what it means to reflect within nursing is needed by all who intend to enter the profession to ensure
its effective use is applied. This essay will look at what reflection in nursing looks like, why we use
reflection as a tool, what are the outcomes of reflecting, how we reflect effectively and what skills are
needed. Then, using an experience within practice, a reflective model will be used to analyse a critical
incident relating to consent. In accordance with the confidentiality measure within The code (NMC,
2015) and to abide by the Data Protection Act 1998, no information will be provided which could
allude to the identity of anyone within the critical incident, thus pseudonyms will be used where
appropriate. According to Howston Jones (2013) reflection is not something that is out of the ordinary
for everyone to do in their everyday lives. Reflection is the act of looking back on a situation, event or
incident critically and making sense of it to learn from it and alter our actions to gain better outcomes
should the same incident arise again (Capelhow, Crouch, Fisher Walsh, 2013). As new experiences
happen to everyone, everyday; it would be right to consider reflection as an ongoing process within
everyone s life, a process that is repeated, honed and a skill to be developed (McKenna, 1998).
Reflection is a tool that is used within many disciplines including teaching and within the legal
profession

Essay on crusades
Crusading, much like Imperialism in the 20th century, was all about expansion. During the middle
ages however, it was more about the expansion of religion rather then power, or at least that s the way
it was preached. Crusading by definition is; a holy war authorized by the pope, who proclaimed it in
the name of god of Christ. It was believed to be Christ s own enterprise, legitimized by his personal
mandate (1). This essay examines the background of the crusades to offer a better understanding as to
why they occurred. It also examines the effects that the crusades had on the world. It is easy to look at
the crusades as a violent meaningless act, but one must understand the type of setting this movement

Knights would go in the hope of acquiring power and control over this new land. The chance at
commercial success in new places was a huge determining factor for the western merchants of the day.
Adventure, money, land, and religion were all big reasons for participating in the Crusades of the
Middle Ages (4).
The first Crusade began on November 27th 1095, as a response to the attack on the Byzantine Empire
by the Muslims. Pope Urban II inspired many clergy and laypeople to join the crusading force. There
was much excitement for the new adventure that awaited the people of Europe. They united at the
Byzantine capital of Constantinople and launched a counter attack against the Seljuk conquerors of
Anatolia. They then fought and overtook many city states belonging to the Byzantine Empire with
final destination Jerusalem, in their sights (5). The Majority of people who joined the crusades were
from France, with others coming from Lorraine, Burgundy, Flanders, and Italy. Many common people
were interested in crusading as well as noble individuals. The reason for this was the chance of finding
and claiming any land once they had overtaken parts of the Middle East (6). The crusaders enjoyed
considerable success during their first couple of years. In only their first month of crusading they
conquered Anatolia in the year 1097. During the same year they won a decisive victory over the Turks,
during which

Remember the Titans is a 2000 non fiction set in the early 1970 s. This well known film would feel

The Use Of Non Human Tests Subjects For Experimentation...
Definition
Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, is the use of non human test subjects for
experimentation and research studies (2). This definition is very broad because it is used in numerous
fields such as drug testing, brain functionality, effects of food additives, pesticides, DNA modification,
xenotransplantation, cosmetic testing, cancer research, AIDs research and many more. Overall, animal
testing is a professional conflict, but it can also be considered as a personal conflict whether or not you
believe it is right to test on any animal for the sake of science. Types of animals (Consciousness)

This is done so researchers know the exact genes or traits that the animal being tested is exhibiting so
they can control the number of possible variables that can affect their their results. In the past, dealers
were licensed by the USDA to sell animals from random sources including animal shelters, free to a
good home ads, stolen pets and some were taken completely from the wild. This is a much less
common practice because it includes variety in your animals which could skew the researcher s results
and it is frowned upon. (Source?)
However, the question remains whether it is ethical to perform research on animals that exhibit some
form of consciousness. Consciousness is a very vague term and has been defined as many terms such
as sentience, awareness of itself within its surroundings, subjectivity, having a sense of selfhood, and
the executive control system of the mind and many more vague definitions(3). It has been known
through thousands of experiments that animals from a wide range of species can exhibit emotions such
as happiness, jealousy, grief, and stress(4).
The first animal to ever ask an existential question was a Grey African Parrot by the name of Alex.
The question he asked the trainer was What color am I? and learned the meaning of grey after being
told. Alex was studied by a behavioral psychologist from the late 70 s to the early 2000 s. He was

Essay On Easter Island
Polynesian Expansion Easter Island, previously named Rapa Nui, is mostly famous for its 10 metre
tall Moai statues dotting the Island. Easter Island is located on the eastern point of the Polynesian
Triangle. Easter Island has four extinct volcanoes, but its largest is Rano Kau, located on the
southwestern headland. Rapa Nui was first settled by Hotu Matu a in 400 CE. He came from the
Marquesas in two large canoes with his wife and extended family. The Polynesians navigated Rapa
Nui, using only the stars and stick charts. They used double hulled canoes as a source of
transportation, to get to Rapa Nui. Some people believe that a tribe of Polynesian island hoppers

They used canoes as a source of transportation. Their first canoes were not sturdy enough for open
waters and would capsize if a large wave came. Over time they built their canoes stronger and used a
double hull method to give the vessel more stability. These canoes were called outriggers and could
withstand deep waters (Textbook, 2013). This is what Hotu Matu a used to get to Rapa Nui with his
wife and extended family. Hotu Matu a started the population off at Rapa Nui and spread the word
about it. Soon there were many people on Rapa Nui, as many as 2000 to 3000 inhabitants. There are
over 800 Moai statues on Rapa Nui, one for almost every family (Smithsonian National Museum of
Natural History, 2017). The Maoi statues were carved around 1200 C.E to 1500 C.E and weighed
close to 12700 kilograms, they were 10 metres tall and were believed to protect their creators. Once
the word got around that these Moai statues protected their owners, every person on the island wanted
one. This used all the resources and soon they couldn t even hunt, because there was no wood to make
weapons. Some people believe that the Moai statues were placed by gods, and they walked into place,
however the only evidence that points towards this theory, is that these statues were far too heavy to
be moved by man. There are scientific investigations taking place right now, trying to prove that

  • 2. Ww1 Causes The Great War, also known as World War One was between July 28th, 1914 and November 11th, 1918. This was considered one of the worst wars ever fought, it lasted 4 years, 3 months and 2 weeks. World War One consisted of Trench warfare. Trench warfare was warfare which the armies attack, counterattack, and defend from a system of trenches dug into the ground. To spark this horrific war was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand who was an Archduke of Austria este., Austro Hungary, Royal Price of Hungary and of Bohemia. The long term causes of World War One were Militarism, Alliances, and Nationalism. Militarism is the glorification of military, the belief of a nation and its people to build and maintain a strong military, to be prepared ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to secret alliance created between nations, it is inevitable that a disagreement between two nations will lead to the involvement of many nations, who already secretly agreed to help each other. This is why alliances is a cause of World War One. Two major alliances before WW1 was the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente which consisted of Russia, France and Great Britain. The Triple Entente was created to counter the Triple Alliance, which consisted of Germany, Austria Hungary and Italy. In the beginning of the war, the Triple Alliance will be known as the Central Powers not including Italy because Italy finds in their best interest to wait and see how the war unfold and go to the winning side to allow them to grow as a nation. The Central Powers will sooner or later consist of the Ottoman Empire, German Empire, Austro Hungary and the Kingdom of Bulgaria. The Triple Entente will eventually be known as Allied Powers and grow remarkably, consisting of Kingdom of Siberia, the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Italy, the British Empire, the French Third Republic, the Kingdom of Belgium, the Empire of Japan, the Portuguese Republic, the Kingdom of Greece, the Kingdom of Romania, the United States, and many others who lent financial aid and ... • 3. Theoretical Paradigms Of Structural Family Systems Theory The major theoretical paradigm that informs structural family therapy is based on systems theory. The word system is rooted in Latin and Greek words that mean to place together so a system can be thought of as an entity made out of other entities that are placed together (Rosenblatt, 1994, pg. 49). In systems theory there are many elements, assumptions, definitions to address the different dynamics within a system. According to Rosenblatt (1994) systems theory provides insight into how systems (families) are formed and highlights the patterns that surface within the system. Systems theory places emphasis on the entire system (entire family), rather than focusing on the different parts (individuals) of the system (Rosenblatt, 1994). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Vetere (2001) structure is defined by any given point in time where families organize themselves based on overt/covert rules that impact the behaviors and choices of the family. Systems theory discusses the different levels in a system and how one level influences another and so this same assumptions can be observed in structural model (Rosenblatt, 1994). In structural model the family is looked at as being embedded within wider social systems which serve as transactional patterns (Navarre, 1998). Each family member can be characterized in more than one subsystem for a permanent or short period of time. The roles of each member will be defined based on the subsystem they are in. Family members are categorized by different subsystems, which can consist of parental, couple, parent child, grandparent, male/female, power, hobby and interest (Minuchin, 1974). Hence, based on the relationship of a subsystem families can form coalitions, enmeshment and disengagement. According to Minuchin (1974) problems that children face are frequently due to the boundaries between them and the parental ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Internment Of Japanese Americans During Wwii Jaquelyn Hernandez 2nd Hr.Social Studies/ 3rd Hr.English Unnecessary December 7, 1941 Roosevelt said, A date that will live in infamy. Japan entered World War II in 1940 alongside the Axis which included Germany and Italy. Hideki Tojo then came to power a year later. The Government saw the Dutch East Indies rich in oil as well as other Asian territories. However the only threat to stopping the Japanese from conquering them was the U.S. Navy. In order for this to happen Japan bombed the Huge Naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The surprise attack killed 2,400 Americans and damaged warships and planes. Congress quickly took action and declared war on Japan. On December 11 Japan s allies declared war on the United States. Roosevelt signed Executive order 9066 on February 19, 1942. Executive order 9066 forced all the Japanese on the West Coast into internment camps without a trial, (American History 807 811). The internment of Japanese Americans during WWII was not justified because it was done because of their race, it violated their individual rights, and it did not help the war effort. The U.S. issued Executive Order 9066 because of fear and anger towards the Japanese. American citizens were put in prison camps for crimes they did not commit. The only reason Japanese Americans were put into internment camps was because Japan attacked the United States, But when, under conditions of modern warfare, our shores are threatened by hostile forces, the power to protect must ... • 5. Gwendolyn Brook And Kwame Dawess Analysis The African American Struggle Through Contemporary Poetry Ai, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Kwame Dawes are all contemporary African American poets. Their works often focused on different aspects of the post civil rights movement in the African American community. Ai was known for writing poetry on hard subjects. She was also known for writing poems that were graphic. Being multiracial,( 1/2 Japanese, 1/8 Choctaw, 1/4 Black, and 1/16 Irish), many of her poems were based on the complexity of identity ( qtd. in Ai, a Steadfast Poetic Channel of Hard Lives, Dies at 62 ). On the other hand, Kwame Dawes is a Nigerian born man of Jamaican descent. Gwendolyn Brooks was an African American woman whose adult years were spent during the civil rights movement. Tornado Child is a poem written by Kwame Dawes in 2002. It celebrates different aspects of black womanhood. In contrast, Gwendolyn Brook s We Real Cool is written in the sixties and talks about the negative aspects of stereotypes. The Kid by Ai is graphic and depicts violence. All of the poems demonstrate different struggles that are faced by the African American community. This essay will specifically examine the African American struggle through the lens of misogynoir, stereotypes, and the destruction of black families. The first poem, Tornado Child by Kwame Dawes, explores the African American struggle through misogynoir. All the natural resources are contaminated with lethal lapses. Among them the land and water resources are worst affected and under continuous stress with both biotic and abiotic, due to anthropogenic interventions. If we talk about the soul of infinite life i.e., SOIL then it seems to appear the primary recipient by design or accident of a myriad of waste products and chemicals used in modern society. • 8. Mise En Scene In Psycho From the quote, we are able to see that all , if not most , of Hitchcock s films seek to play with the viewer s emotions, often by leaving crumbs of suspense before the action, making the viewers go through a myriad of emotions. Hence, for Psycho, I will be discussing three scenes where Hitchcock has deliberately and precisely controlled via the film medium, to engage us. Argobhast and Norman s conversation scene. In this scene, we see Argobhast s journey towards finding out the true reason of Marion s disappearance and hence, Hitchcock plays us via Norman and Argobhast s first interaction. Initially, the scene opens up on a light note, with Norman seen reading and eating candy and as the non diegetic ominous sound slowly disappearing, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Upon entering the parlor, Hitchcock has set the stage for the viewer to use Marion as a vehicle to determine how Norman is like. The POV shot of Marion studying the room first brings out attention to a stuffed Owl and a stuffed crow, the first indicator to the viewer that something is not right, making us feel suspicious already. Marion then takes the seat closer to the tiffany lamp while Norman takes the seat at the opposite side of the room which is noticeably darker. Mise en scence in this scene does the most to capture the true personalities of the characters. For Marion, Hitchcock has deliberately surrounded her with objects such as the lamp which is actually the only source of light for the whole room, a pitcher of milk and several other scenic objects. Furthermore, the milk may perhaps symbolize innocence that despite the crime committed, there is a redeeming quality within Marion that will save her. As Marion sits closest to the lamp, her face remains brightly lit up and similarly casting the same effect towards the objects around her. The viewer upon seeing Marion, unconsciously feels at ease within her presence, perhaps even forgetting that Marion is no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Theme Of Justice in The Big Sleep and The Black Cat Essay The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler and The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe both approach the theme of justice and present it in dissimilar ways. The Big Sleep presents justice as something which you can achieve through beliefs and morals, without the use of money and crime. The Black Cat presents justice as something which is absolute and something which you cannot escape psychologically, a force which is inevitable. In The Big Sleep, a conversation between Philip Marlowe and Vivien Sternwood is proceeding, in which Marlowe is offered $15,000 to be silenced over the disappearance of Rusty Regan, and within the conversation the reader is given an insight into the motivations and morals of Marlowe, and his own personal view of the topic in ... Edgar Allen Poe s tales usually contain graphic imagery and themes of fear and horror, all shown in The Black Cat. In this extract, as it written in a narrative form it shows the true psychological struggle between the narrator and their demons as it explores the criminal mind from a first person point of view, noticing both character and motivation. The aspects of justice shown in The Black Cat are Criminal Justice and the ideology of Religious Justice. Unlike The Big Sleep, the Criminal Justice System of the 19th century was much more ruthless in that even the narrator is aware his actions will get recognised and punished, an action which appears inevitably. Analyzing Erikson s Psychosocial Theories Erik Erikson s Psychosocial Theory places everyone into stages, from the days where they still need diapers and bottles, to the days where they can barely remember who they are. We all go through the stages in life where we learn to walk, communicate, and trust. How easy we are influenced and how we feel internally is what helps us understand how we are placed within these stages. With me being 18 years old, I am placed into the Identity vs. Role Confusion stage. • 12. The Synthesis Of Apomorphine Was Historically Accomplished... Introduction: Apomorphine has been used as far back as 2000 BC. In 2000 BC the Mayan s noticed that the bulb and root of water lilies gave a narcotic feeling, as well as acted as an aphrodisiac and partial hallucinogen.1 Apomorphine belongs to a class of molecules called aporphines which are present in water lilies, more specifically in Nymphaea caerulea and Nymphaea ampla.1 While mild effects were shown in parts of water lilies, scientists wanted to know what exactly caused these effects. The compounds were isolated and tested to determine that apomorphine was the most active ingredient. The concentration of apomorphine was so low in the plants that isolation was impractical so a synthesis was designed to investigate the properties of apomorphine further; leading to apomorphine being used for Parkinson s disease, erectile dysfunction, and most recently Alzheimer disease. Synthesis2: The synthesis of apomorphine was historically accomplished by an acid catalyzed rearrangement of morphine. This method typically had low and varying yields: anywhere from 0.6% to 46% yield. In 2008, a new synthesis was patented that shown yields as high as 55% to 70% yield. This new synthesis, scheme 1, uses phosphoric acid as the catalyst and phosphorus pentoxide as a water scavenger water is the by product of the reaction and the phosphorus pentoxide irreversibly binds to the water. • 13. Descriptive Essay About My Mother My mommy, one of the most important people in my life, the most selfless individual I know probably will ever know. From the moment I was born, she was the first person I fell in love with. She is indeed gorgeous, but its her soft light brown eyes that show nothing but kindness the love you get from her make you feel warm on the coldest day. My mom always worked hard to ensure that me and my sister had the best upbringing that we could get, at times she was strict and often talked to me in a stern tone whenever me or my sister made a mistake. Of course no child likes punishment, but as I got older and looked back on it I realized that she was correcting me out of love not to scrutinize me. Me and my sister always took pride in our mother s appearance , I especially took pride in her eyes. I remember when she would come to my school for report card pick up , I wanted to make sure everyone knew some way some how, that this beautiful creature was my mother. I ve seen very beautiful people throughout my lifetime, but very few, match the impeccable beauty that is my mother. The main reason I was always fond of my mother, is because of the way she used to take more than great care of us, especially when one of us were sick. How Do Hurricanes Affect Southern Coastlines Over the course of humanity, there have been several notable types of disasters ranging from severe floods, earthquakes, tornados, fires, ice storms, bombings, tropical storms, and hurricanes. Many individuals have experienced some form of these disasters throughout their life, either natural or manmade. Surveys suggest that 13 30% of individuals will be exposed to one or more natural disasters in their lifetime (Jacob, 2015, p. 512). Along the eastern and southern United States coastlines, the more common disaster associated with these areas are hurricanes. Each year, on average, 10 tropical storms, of which six become hurricanes, develop over the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico from June to November. Many of these remain over the ocean; however, about five hurricanes strike the United States coastline every three years (Hurricanes, nd, para 4). Hylas is scared that the philosophers will put thoughts in people s heads, eventually turning them against their own religion and beliefs. First, he makes Hylas admit that we can only sense sensible things, and that sensible things are nothing but groups of sensible qualities. Hylas hesitates, but Philonous reassures him. Philonous gives a cherry as an example; a small, red, sweet cluster, which in actuality could be something other than this. Philonous now introduces the idea of pain and pleasure. Philonous explains that pain is mind dependant, meaning that pain cannot exist if nobody is feeling it. The same goes with pleasure. Philonous then explains that this does not only apply to pain and pleasure, but to any sensible quality. First, Philonous tries to relate heat with pain. He says that inanimate objects cannot feel pain or pleasure; Matter is inanimate; Matter cannot feel pain nor pleasure; heat is a form of pain; therefore matter is incapable of feeling heat; This means heat is mind ... • 18. Who Is The Greek Beast Cerberus The Protector Of Capitalism We live in a world controlled by an invisible yet very present force that shapes the way we live our daily lives. With industry as its host and technology as the blood being pumped into its heart, it is a force powerful enough to bend politics to fit its needs. Capitalism; a method of industry where production and distribution are privately or corporately owned, its operation grows through profits, exploitation of labor, and extinguishing competition. During the Industrial Revolution technology was on the global stage. Factories and machines are built in existing cities producing and distributing mass goods on a global scale. Over time this fast production of goods would replace the old agricultural economy to a modern urban economy. While invisible actors of major corporations continue to exploit labor and extinguish competition religiously for profit, technology embodies Cerberus; the protector of capitalism. The greek beast Cerberus is known for protecting the realm of Hades from intruders. As a result, societies like ancient Rome and Nazi Germany, eventually fall and crumble. Over time some of these societies recover, but are never the same again. Societies fail due to political corruption, loss of resources and war. These obstacles are hard to overcome, but not impossible. These obstacles weaken and tear at societies, until they finally break, turning them into a piece of history. Political Corruption and the fall of government are one of the main reasons why societies fail. Lina and Doon have found many things in the City of Ember. On the other hand, hostile aggression infers to the actions that are committed to producing injurious outcomes through an approach aimed at gaining resources, power and status within a school environment. This exorbitant interest expense continues to increase the U.S. annual deficit, which in turn, continues to increase the national debt that now stands at over $9.5 trillion (Hall, 2008). As anyone who has experienced financial trouble, especially with credit cards, it is the interest on the debt that creates the biggest problem. I have seen that phrase and its slightly more common counterpart, Well behaved women rarely make history many times. It is especially popular in the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), a medieval history research and reenactment group in which I participate, and is often accompanied by images of female fighters in armor wielding swords. Most recently I saw it emblazoned upon my girlfriend s chest on a medieval themed t shirt that she bought at a recent SCA event. I have never thought much about the slogan except for the fact that it generally represents women who make themselves known in unforgettable ways and are remembered mostly for disrupting the status quo. Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, an author and professor of history at Harvard University, introduced the phrase in a 1976 journal article about the characterization of women in Puritan funeral sermons. Ulrich more recently wrote a book, based on the phrase, that explores how women in the past have challenged the ways history was written. In her essay Well Behaved Women Seldom Make History, Ulrich discusses the history of the phrase, how it was coined, and how it has taken on a life of its own. The Importance Of Reflection In Nursing As higher standards expected are from the public and higher patient safety demands are expected from health boards, therefore, there is a need for a way of measuring standards of practice which can be achieved through active thinking in a clinical environment brought about by critical reflection (Rolfe, Jasper Freshwater 2011). Reflection has become such a key component in the role of a nurse that the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) have seen it fit to include it in their professional code of conduct the Code: Professional Standards of Practice and Behaviour for Nurses and Midwives, hereafter referred to as the Code (Nursing Midwifery Council [NMC], 2015). With reflection being a vital skill for nurses to continue their professional development (Parrish Crookes, 2013), an analysis of what it means to reflect within nursing is needed by all who intend to enter the profession to ensure its effective use is applied. This essay will look at what reflection in nursing looks like, why we use reflection as a tool, what are the outcomes of reflecting, how we reflect effectively and what skills are needed. Then, using an experience within practice, a reflective model will be used to analyse a critical incident relating to consent. In accordance with the confidentiality measure within The code (NMC, 2015) and to abide by the Data Protection Act 1998, no information will be provided which could allude to the identity of anyone within the critical incident, thus pseudonyms will be used where appropriate. According to Howston Jones (2013) reflection is not something that is out of the ordinary for everyone to do in their everyday lives. Reflection is the act of looking back on a situation, event or incident critically and making sense of it to learn from it and alter our actions to gain better outcomes should the same incident arise again (Capelhow, Crouch, Fisher Walsh, 2013). As new experiences happen to everyone, everyday; it would be right to consider reflection as an ongoing process within everyone s life, a process that is repeated, honed and a skill to be developed (McKenna, 1998).
