Pakistan has an installed power generation capacity of 24,375 megawatts, but electricity demand is 23,505 megawatts. In 2013-14, the country generated 105,996 gigawatt hours of electricity. The major power generators are government-owned dams like Tarbela and Mangla, and independent power producers such as KAPCO and HUBCO. Electricity is transmitted by the National Transmission & Despatch Company and distributed by nine distribution companies to various areas of the country. However, system losses during transmission and distribution were 18,136 gigawatt hours in 2013-14.
