Packaging serves to contain, protect, identify, describe, display, and promote products to make them marketable and keep them clean. It has to keep products fresh, intact, and edible while making them easy for consumers to transport home. The first packaging engineering degree program was established in 1952 at Michigan State University. Common packaging materials include plastic, glass, metal, paper, and combinations like cartons. Each material has advantages and disadvantages for different types of products and contexts of distribution, storage, sale, and use.
