This document discusses why it is important to focus on very young adolescents between late childhood and full adolescence. During this period, enormous physical, psychological, and social changes occur. It is also a time of monumental life changes like school leaving and marriage. Very young adolescents experience important public health issues like early pregnancy, early sexual activity, and interpersonal violence. The attitudes and values formed during this period have major implications for their future lives. However, many programs aimed at adolescents deliberately exclude or do not effectively reach very young adolescents.
