How to get from HERE to THERE…
THE BIG IDEA: A library should cultivate a "culture of innovation ... and establish a process for proposing innovation." - Deb Schmidle, ACRL webinar, April 2008.
INNOVATION It’s the THINKING not the THING Examples: Code Game Learning 2.0 Wireless keyboards Staffwiki Turn off computers during break
2 Things: 1. Cultivate a culture of ideas 2. Have a process for proposing ideas
What if all your Library Dreams Could Come True?
Where would you take your idea? We didn’t know, either.
Things would have to CHANGE.
Culture, Step 1: The Dean announces a new initiative We will foster innovation and creativity We will help ideas become reality We will train everyone how to do that. We will accept that innovation is necessary
Culture, Step 2: continuous training
Culture, Step 3: Create a Process More on this later….
Culture: Step 4: Praise to the inno-Beta-ers
Process: In a perfect world: 1. Ideas are encouraged and welcomed. 2. Submitting ideas is simple. 3. Evaluation is quick and effective. 4. Feedback is timely, constructive, and informative. 5. Implementation is rapid and smooth. 6. Ideas are reviewed for additional potential. 7. People are recognized, and success is celebrated. 8. Idea system performance is measured, reviewed, and improved.
Process : Where do ideas go to get heard? We propose: a REALLY simple form on the wiki
Process: The Form: BIG IDEA PROPOSAL Big Idea: ____________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ Proposed by : ________________________________________________ Who/what will be impacted? List positive and negative changes, what problem solved? What department (s) work would be influenced? Overall outcome? What investment/costs are involved? ___________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ I have requested _____________________________ as my immediate supervisor to review this proposal.    Date submitted to committee __________________________________________________________________________________________ Action ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Archived ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Process : Who hears the ideas? We propose: the LC or a subset of the LC
Process: Then what happens? The Idea Group helps the proposer collaborate The proposer keeps the idea alive or finds herself a “champion” It’s political; just say so
Process :Communication Track ideas that come in Track timeliness of responses Track what’s happened so far Track implementations Track “compost” We think this could all be on the wiki
Process: Persistance Change is slow. Years not months. Culture shift
Process: Assess We will always be looking for ways to do it better.
QUESTIONS
Can’t I just go to my boss and get the thing done? Sure! (now record it on the wiki!) What if it’s bigger than your department? What if someone says “No”? What if you don’t know how yet?
Why can’t things just stay the same? Google Iphone Recession Amazon Wikipedia Web 2.0
Who would hold the process accountable? I will
Where would we get the money? From things we don’t need to do. From people who get excited about what we are doing. From a university that sees how ESSENTIAL we are. Some ideas don’t cost a cent
How would Big Things happen? Trial Failure / Success Over And over
The new world is perpetual Beta.
Be the Change You Want to See Our group’s big idea Was to imagine a way to make more big ideas happen. For that, we propose a Big Idea Group (=L.C.). Today, we are asking you to BE the Big Idea Group And consider our big idea With the kind of consideration you would use on other big ideas . How can we collaborate? This is hard, isn’t it?
