This document discusses speckle reduction techniques for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. It analyzes stacks of single-look CryoSat echoes over ocean surfaces. Compensating for the along-track antenna pattern when averaging looks provides better speckle reduction, bringing the equivalent number of looks (ENL) closer to the expected value. This technique increases the ENL at retracking points by an average of 30%, improving the quality of multilooked waveforms and potentially reducing sea level anomaly variance.
